*thousands of C5 Corvettes owners are skipping dinner tonight and running into their garages right now ,to take off their front bumpers to get that factory built sheet* hahaha...
Another feature of the instrument panel: if you hold the Option button and press the Fuel button 4 times, you enter the diagnostics where the computer lists out every code stored on the computer. You then get the option of clearing each code individually after it’s done cycling. It reads “Manual Diagnostics”, press Options until you find the code you are looking for and hold Reset to clear it.
Thought I would mention the ability to pull codes from the DIC panel..... I'm no expert, but I don't know of any other vehicle that allows you to do this on the DIC? 1. Turn the ignition to the On position, but don’t start the engine. 2. Press the “Reset” button on the Driver Information Center (DIC) to turn off any warning messages. 3. Press and hold the “Options” button. 4. While holding the “Options” button, press the “Fuel” button four times within a 10-second period.
Yes... The C5 is the only vette you can pull up your codes... GM didn't make this mistake on the C6, C7, or C8s... Now your can tell you mechanic what's wrong with your car... Keeping them honest... Lol...
Why do I love C5 Vettes, it's the pop-up headlights! Last years before they went with a fixed headlight but the nostalgia the pop-ups give are great. Sad state when we do not get a newer car with this interesting design feature.
Hi Lyle.... I called and spoke to you a little while ago. ( Me from Australia again, With the Right-Hand Drive 97 C5, )........ Another thing I realized on my c5 is, If you are doing something inside the car, and need to keep the doors open for a length of time, you don't have to disconnect your battery to turn the interrior lights off.. All you have to do is click the door latch on the side of the door when you have it open, with a screw driver to simulate the door is closed, while you have it open, and this turns off all you interrior lights, as if the door is closed, so you can work on it all day without having to worry about your battery going flat....... Thanks again Sam.
Lyle, You do a very great job of being fun and very informative, I look forward to seeing these videos every week. Thank you and I thank C and S Corvettes for allowing you to keep making these videos.
You can access all vehicle codes by pressing and holding "options", press "fuel" 4 times then press any button for "diagnostics". This will display all T-codes from every ECM. After being displayed, press "Reset" and it will clear all T-codes. To exit press "odo". Thank you for this excellent video!
Dropping an appreciation comment for you guys. First time c5 owner (and wished I found your channel earlier) and you taught alot and calmed me down with a lot of the random gremlins I got after purchasing my beautiful 2001. Hope yall see this … thank you!
Well I bought a 1999 Corvette in Nov 2021. Had trouble with the serpentine belt staying on. Got one with deeper groves, it stayed on. This was a symptom of a bigger problem. 600 miles to Florida condo, and real problem found. The harmonic balance had started to separate, and serpentine portion move towards timing cover. Part changed out by local shop, and all is good. This is a not so common problem with C5 & C6 vettes, and owners must be aware. Mine was just caught in time before more serious damage was caused. I was lucky.
On the C5's and C6's, where the harmonic balancer goes on the crankshaft, first, it's a taper shaft crank, and it does not have a woodruff key to keep it in place. It has a HUGE torque load on to keep it tight, but some do still come loose and sling a belt. GM's answer was to use a new bolt and the face of the bolt face has embedded tiny diamond shards (for lack of a better word), so that when torqued to 280 ft/lbs (somewhere in that range) the diamond chips 'dig in' to the mating surface of the bolt face and the harmoic balancer. Problem solved with cheap GM engineering. Who'd a thunk it
@@csvette .... well, when you are 600 miles from home, and the break loose harmonic balancer is beginning to rub on the timing cover, local shops are not aware of GM's mess, nor the fix they came up with. And since this problem exists in C5 & C6, they sure took their time of coming up with their near secret solution. I'm surprised anyone knows. Cheers.
Thank you Lyle. I am a proud C5 owner (2004) model. I just found your video feed and I am glad I did. Your videos are not only informative, but enjoyable to watch. Thanks again for the videos.
On an early C5, if the option code sticker isn't in the glovebox, look underneath the driver's side hatch cover in the floor of the trunk. Also, reproduction build sheets and window stickers with your car's info are available from the National Corvette Museum.
Lyle, it’s Roger over in Fort Lauderdale. We spoke yesterday about the 2014 Corvette with the dashboard coming apart. You directed me to wait that there would be plenty of other cars that didn’t need expensive repairs. Thank you very much. I appreciate your advice. I’ll keep your number one in my book. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate your channel. Been watching alot. Just picked up 2002 convertible 6speed yesterday. Looks like it might need a few minor things but love it.
This is one of your best videos yet. I enjoy how you’ve gotten so good at making videos that you just roll along as if nothing is wrong. Good work Lyle.
Very helpful thank you. Have a C7,C6 but my C5 has always been a favorite body style. You have great info videos keep up the good work for all us little people.
To add to the fuel door release, there is also a rear hatch release in both rear storage compartments there is a tiny cable with a ball on the end on each side of the car. You can pull each 1 to release the hatch in case you lose power or if it becomes inoperable. When in competition mode if you want to read say oil or water temp you can hit the reset button on the DIC an read all info you can normally see and it stays in Comp. mode. If you have locking lug nuts there is an indentation under the left rear and center storage covers where the meet up for the key for factory locking lugs.
Thanks again. Always great information. I had a ‘93 C-4 years ago and just bought a ‘98 C-5 convertible. Noticeable difference. I really love my C-5 and enjoy learning more about it watching your videos. 👍
I recently acquired a 2000 C5 so far have put about a thousand miles on it and now it's in storage for winter I absolutely love the car it is beautiful handles great and even stock the performance is wonderful look forward to more of your videos thanks Joe
When putting down the C5 convertible top, after undoing the front latches, when you press the rear deck lid release button, the windows automatically go down if they are in the up position..
Thanks a bunch man. Bought my first C5 yesterday and i think i'm in love. I went from a Wrangler to this so i'm trying to learn how freakin low it is!😁😁 Big shoutout from Sweden!
Thank you for the answer. It's really, really, really fun to drive. Like a gocart but lightning fast. Winter is fast approaching here but if i'm lucky i can enjoy it a couple of weeks more. I'm gonna use the wintermonths to fix it, it's a '98 so of course there's some issues, and equip it for all the roadtrips and adventures next spring and summer. All the best!
I appreciate you taking the time to inform those either interested in Corvettes and/or those who are current owners. I currently have V3, but having an itch for C5 Z06, or C6 GRANDSPORT.

I'm looking to move to the Gulf Coast from Philadelphia, Naples area soon as I get there I will be bringing my C5 to you for all my work, great content my man
Hey Lyle thanks from So Oregon , and appreciate this weeks c5 goodies especially the build sheet location a tad hard to get to but very cool to know 😎 your the best guy out there every week so keep up all you do for us, take care and see ya next week
Hey Kyle I finally subscribed. my first introduction to you was a statement that I here far too much of . & It was " so your looking to buy a C-5! " Stay away from the early years 97-2000 & absolutely walk away from the a-4 (4l60E) Lyle I seem to not learn past mistakes! By the time I saw your video I had already bought ( with Very little research) my 56,000 "99" with an A-4. I have already changed the harmonic balancer & power flushed the A-4 & added amsoil because these rear mounted A-4s get far too HOT? My only saving grace is I have the "so called performance axel" I Just have to learn to live with my automatic however it would be easier if there wasn't a 6 speed in every video & Every C-5 Expert saying stay away from them! (It's not like the old days when you could swap them) lastly have you seen the video where if your locked out of your C-5 so you just shake the rear body side to side ( vigerisley) & for some reason the rear hatch opens up! (Coupe) for sure thanks Lyle sorry if this was too long! Chris
If you put your ignition switch in the second position then push the accelerator three times it resets the oil change indicator. Push it four times it reset your ABS and traction control systems. Mine turned on when I went through a huge puddle of water and got something wet.
Hey Brother you the man. Just one confirmation that all 04 Vettes have the C6 fuel system in GM did away with the ffs code on the 2004 RPO sticker. Grace and peace
You are correct. The 2004 was the first year that the "insert from top of tank" fuel pumps, and they carried that design through 2006, after which they changed it yet again. Lyle
Thanks again for the good information, on my driver's side the tightening of seat belt does not work, after pulling it all the way out, as it retracts back i do not hear a ratchet sound, it does work on the passenger side, I can find no video on fixing this, can you send me in the right direction, going to auto cross at the end of April, thank you!!!!!
Hey Lyle, one point: the photocell in the DIC button panel also keeps the interior lights from coming on if ambient light is sufficient. C4 did a similar thing with its photocell.
What is the best harmonic balancer you can recommend me for my C-5 2003. 122,000 miles and is wobble, i just got it my first dream corvette, and a have no plans for tracking it or street racing, just cruising with it.
Just know that only the lap portion of the belt is the only part that locks you in. I use mine all the time cause you never know when you might have to slam the brakes cause of someone else’s carelessness. It will keep you planted in the seat.
FWIW, I found out while working on a friend's C5, a 1999 to be specific, that I had to remove the battery to access the passenger side Udder to inspect and clean it. After the battery was reinstalled, I saw that the car was not reading the TPMS system. It had to paired up to the car. The owner did that when I was not around and I'm not sure how he did it. Can you Lyle, or any viewer, tell me how that's done? Thanks in advance.
Another unknown to most C5 owners is that there is a cabin pressure release valve which is located under the carpet just behind the driver side rear tire on the sidewall. This valve allows air to flow out of the cabin when closing the trunk on FRC and verts, and the hatch on the coupes. Without this valve closing the hatch or trunk with the windows up and roof on/up would be a challenge.
IT would! It would also pop your ears everytime you close the door. I wish they had inserted another valve on the other side of the car--the single valve is barely adequate. Lyle
@@csvette Agreed on the second valve. I've been fortunate to own 3 c5s and one for 20+ years since new. Neither of them had issues with the hatch or trunk closing with a firm press on the lid. However, I've heard from others having issues where they needed to open their doors or windows, or remove the roof to get their trunk or hatch to close.
A few weeks ago on my C5 Convertible if found a release button that opens the lid for the roof, for the past 2 years I've been pulling the cord behind the drivers seat.. crazy what you find on accident in these cars sometimes................
Competition mode turns traction control way down but leaves active handling on to prevent you getting too out of shape. For drag racing, you may want to shut everything off and rely on your skill to keep it pointed in the correct direction as active handling uses individual brake application and yaw sensors to determine if you are getting into trouble...that slows you down a fraction. Competition mode is designed more for race track (road course) driving. Lyle
You have made me pick a wise choice after getting into corvette. I liked the c3 but you let me know lots of vacuum problems. C4s they dont make the parts anymore and hard to diagnose. C5 seems like the perfect one especially 2001-2002. C6 is too expensive and too much electronics for me. Plus i had a 1997 miata as a first car so you know i gotta get the daddy now.
Damn There was a few of these I didn't know, and I legit grew up with my C5, Like I can remember being in a car seat in that car! Though that build sheet is probably mush by now.
What about a video on the names or part numbers for smaller items like the little plastic place screws for the roof housing . The little rebits if that make any since. I'm new to corvette
I have a c5 2001 corvette When you turn the key, all the gages cycle. But when I drive it, the speedometer doesn't work, and the mileage. What should I do to fix it? Thanks dave

Came here to post this. Super helpful feature!!

Thanks Lyle I have an 0 3/ 50th anniversary Z06 and your video is very informative.
Mine is an 03 Z06 so well, love ut!
As well, love it
@@darrylsjodin3962 Puts a smile on my face Every time I start it.

Thanks buddy new c 5 owner had a few c 4 tho thanks
A few weeks ago on my C5 Convertible if found a release button that opens the lid for the roof, for the past 2 years I've been pulling the cord behind the drivers seat.. crazy what you find on accident in these cars sometimes................
Once again, a super cool informative podcast. I learn more about my 01 C5 everyime. Thank y'all
Does setting into competitive mode still utilizing tracktion control? My car is setup for drag racing
I'm not understanding what you mean...please re-type and re-send this comment, as I want to help but the spelling on key words is ambiguous. Lyle
I have a c5 2001 corvette When you turn the key, all the gages cycle. But when I drive it, the speedometer doesn't work, and the mileage. What should I do to fix it? Thanks dave
Very surprised you didn’t mention reading and clearing codes in the DIC.
Transmission cables are common (?) I just purchased new sun visor, flasher isn't fun to change, I need shift indicator
we make the shift indicator repair kit. CS915 on my website. Lyle :)
I have the cable for the fuel door release. Where do I get the "tab"?
Thank you for telling me where the light sensor is
TY
