  • Today, I've got a video on a really excellent little knife, by a relatively unknown maker who's doing amazing work, the Rainy Day Knives Swayback Jack.

    I’ve been getting into slip joints recently (got a Peña Raptor and a Birdvis barlow), and I was looking at Rainy Day with some interest. Unfortunately he won’t sell to potential international customers, even if they have a US address. A disappointment, but I guess it saves me money. The gaps are also a deal breaker for me personally - I get really neurotic over fitment in custom knives.

    Just like you said, he is now officially UN-unknown. Haha. Beautiful, very unique, cool little knife. The “swayback jack” is hands down my absolute favorite traditional pattern. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s just the simple flowing lines. It just really catches my eye every time I see one. Then add in, if not my favorite, definitely one of my favorite blade shapes that is an excellent utilitarian and practical EDC shape, and you have what is to me, an ideal knife. Thanks for the heads up and I’m sure Rainy Day Knives thanks you too. Haha. Merry Christmas!

    Picked up a slipjoint wharnie of Jim's earlier this year after hearing good things. Mine has a barely visible gap between one of the covers & liners but it is a great build.

    Interesting. My current slipjoints are the Spyderco Roadie, Three Rivers Nomad, and a few Swiss Army Knives and a 1967 Cub Scout Knife.
    I prefer the first two because they don't have nail nicks.

    Hey, everybody! I’m over here minding my own business. Laying here in bed and trying to recover from what ails me.
    And holy freakin crap, I find this Nick Shabazz guy! I am over here thinking what is this guy saying over here. Flicking all these blades around and showing me all these devices.
    Yeah, my knife knowledge can’t fill a thimble and suddenly I’m on this inter web thingy passing out my freakin credit card number like there is no tomorrow. Before I know it I start talking different, moving my hands around and wondering what type of steel is in any given man device? I might even have to purchase facy smancy box to put all my new sharp flippy things in
    So what’s a freakin guy to do!? I guess I will just lock up my freakin credit card and keep watching.
    I will call it the “ Shabazz
    Effect!”

    Haven't said in other videos, because of the prices they charge, custom knives should be held to a higher standard?
    Everything should be near perfect and the only thing that is is the blade(imo)

    Just a few days ago received my TwoSun TS111, very much like a swayback, but thankfully with a linerlock and a flippertab. Also it's quite a bit larger than your average swayback. And on a rainy day you could buy 10 or more of 'em for the price of just one of these modern custom slipjoints🤔

    I feel you let those gaps slide way too easily. Gaps on slip joints made with traditional materials quickly become rust spots if you actually carry & use your knife.

    Very cool knife, but are there any companies making affordable production traditional slipjoints?
    All I see on RUclips and random googling are customs, Case or Gec. All pretty much impossible to get in my part or Europe. I know Rough Rider and there are a few here, but I don't want multiple blades, confederate flag handle or poor steel, at least 440C not A.
    Not the most traditional but Manly looks good. But a few years ago I wasn't interested in slipjoints and recently they disappeared from local shops.
    I tried asking store guys, but they only have no name gas station garbage or say no one buys them so they only stock moderns.
    I started to like slipjoints recently after I got Benchmade Proper, I didn't imagine it would be that hard to find anything else.

      I live in Ohio and have visited GEC and Case knifes. These are affordable knives because they are production /Semi custom knives. I’m surprised you can’t get these brands. Where do you live.

    • @Sicarius888
      @Sicarius888 4 года назад

      @@ratride1 I'm from central Europe.
      GEC don't exist here at all, not one store even lists them. Case there are a few listed on sites, but always out of stock and no planned delivery. Only ones I found were from auction site archive. Single piece once a couple of months sold by individuals who claimed they bought them during visit to USA. Asked and sold for more money than average ZT here, so not very affordable.

      Any knife restrictions in your country for imports from the USA? I’ve seen some beautiful slipjoint knifes made in France. Are they available to you?

    • @Sicarius888
      @Sicarius888 4 года назад

      @@ratride1 There are no restrictions, but if possible I prefer to avoid international shipping because of shipping cost, time and courier delivery instead of local postal pickup machines. A bit more problems if from outside EU because of customs and tax paperwork. But I think I have to if there are none available locally.
      I guess I expected it will be the same as with moderns. Go to local store and pick up something higher end budget. Some kind of traditional version of Real Steel or Civivi.
      I hope I don't expect too much. Just smaller to medium size, single blade, not completely garbage steel, bone handle and above average spring strength.

    I'm sorry, but like so many other custom makers, you're paying top dollar for strange (not necessarily functional) materials, poor build quality, and some jack ass's Maker's Mark. You could throw that in a $40 knife display at a swap meet and it would blend right in. To each his own, but I really don't understand the custom knife market.

    I just learned about Rainy Day Knives, and sadly, you're the only person who has any videos on any knives from him. was just looking at the Custom linerlock model 9 with the CPM-3V blade, lavaflow fat carbon scales, and zirconium pivot. I was really hoping someone had a video on tge model 9, but nope. Makes me a little leery, spending almost $1100 for a knife made by a company that has only one partial review for a slip joint on all of youtube even if it's an American company.
