In today's vid we're reviewing the book "Painting Light & Shadow in Watercolor" by William B. Lawrence.
This is probably one of the BEST and MOST PRACTICAL books I've ever read on watercolor painting.
The author is a genius when it comes to not only painting, but also visual skills in general, as well as building an artistic career (if you read between the lines...).
I highly recommend it to beginners, intermediates and advanced painters alike.

Thank you, you just helped point me in the right direction. I recently purchased some books and recognised some of those images (only having flipped through my new books at this point in time) So after seeing how expensive this book is to purchase now! I can let you know there is an affordable option that has a chunk of this book in it:
Keys to painting Light & Shadow
    Edited by Rachel Rubin Wolf
She is a great editor I have another book that she's put together which also looks great. And contains more Skip Lawrence
Keys to painting Colour & Tonal Value.

There are total of Ten Chapters and so far i have done Five. I love it from the very beginning til what I am going through currently. It is a very good book for beginner artist with basic knowledge. It does help me see clearly on Why How and When to seek in painting.
Just as the author said: " avoid thinking yourself as watercolorist. Your objective is not to become the best technician of the medium but to be the best painter you can be."
Thank you for reviewing this book just before getting me convince to purchase it.
    LOVE IT!! Highly Recommend

wow! what a great review for a wonderful book .. Skip was my first teacher way, way back .. every Wednesday for several years at the Laurel boy's school .. I remember when he brought in those paintings of Josh and Carly, and their black dog, and the Maine fishermen (that one was gorgeous .. another classmate and I both offered. to buy it, but he just laugh and said her was still working on it) .. if I'm not mistaken, it's the one that got him into the AWS ..

Liron, I was wondering if you could comment on what Skip talks about on page 78 - One Stroke. He basically says that because watercolour has been perceived as a minor medium, watercolour artists were taught that "watercolour painting should be like your golf game, the fewer strokes the better" and thousands of watercolour victims became part of that conspiracy. He goes on to say "I know of no good painter who uses the single stroke approach. Painting in watercolour is not a golf game".
I was under the impression that the fewer strokes the better. What is your take on what he is saying here? Anyone else here have any idea?

    • @LironYan
      @LironYan  5 лет назад +1

Great question, and that's definitely ONLY one of the thought provoking ideas I found in this book.
      Here's my OPINION (:
Getting things done in fewer strokes is ideal, because it DOES look better.
However - and this is what I think Skip means by this - if you need more than one or two strokes, don't feel crippled and forced to do things in fewer strokes.
Actually do what's necessary at that moment, perhaps you need to do wet-in-wet to get it to look good (change the temperature, vibrancy, value etc).
Perhaps you need to use multiple strokes.
      Whatever it takes (:
      I hope that makes sense!
(He could also mean something else that contradicts my opinion - which is also fine 😉)

I just wanted to thank you for sharing this book. I am reading it slowly, using the lessons to help me learn how to “see” light and shadow in a new way. Unfortunately the book is out of print, but patience and perseverance prevailed. I was able to find a used copy on eBay for $25 + shipping. My advice to all is to keep looking. Try local used book stores. The fact that the jacket is missing and there is highlighting doesn’t change its value to me. It’s the best book I’ve found for its specific subject matter. Well worth the search. Thanks again.

Liron I am reading this at the moment after I heard Andy Evansen talk about it (after being signposted to a couple of Andy Evansen tutorials by another of your RUclips videos!) and it is a game changer for me. That's amazing - so happy to hear! 😁 Andy knows what he's talking about!
      I'd recommend 2 in particular:
      1. Drawing Scenery by Jack Hamm
      (I reviewed it here: ruclips.net/video/6ynKE-zgBR4/видео.html)
It's so useful for composition, probably one of the best art books I ever owned.
      2. Joseph Sbukvich's Mastering Mood & Atmosphere in Watercolor.
This is so information and demo-heavy, from a true master.
      I can't recommend it enough!
      I hope this helps ^_^

@@LironYan thanks so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with these recommendations. The Jack Hamm book also seems like exactly what I was looking for. Gary Tucker recommended a book on composition on his channel but it turned out to be out of print here in the UK!

Absolutely loved this review. I recently finished reading Color Choices by Stephen Quiller, and I just really loved the way he introduces some technique and theory but the majority of the book is more about making color choices with impressions and feelings you get from the subject...have you heard of this book at all?

You seem like such a nice guy. Little evidence of your sadistic streak until this vlog :-) You get us all excited about this book and I can understand why you're excited by it, and then we run out to buy it only to find that unless we're willing to pay $100 or more for a used copy, it's not available. That's just mean . Thanks anyway, for giving us a glimpse at what looks to be a great book.

I got lucky, my wife bought it for me this Christmas 😀🎄. I've only read the first section and it's a breath of fresh air.
It might not suit everyone, especially if you like to paint more detail such as often found in a lot of urban sketching type art.
I'm still a relative newbie, so I like trying different ways of painting. There is a plethora of information and demos here on RUclips, so I have found myself to get a bit lost in it all at time; such is the depth and breadth of this rabbit hole!
I have a few beginner books, which I sometimes use to learn and practise different techniques, as I have never been to an art class since I was 14 years old at school.
One of the interesting things I read in this book was his comment about how "colouring within the lines" has somehow made it difficult for painters to break out of that "restriction". Recently, I painted a picture of a restaurant on a street corner in Madrid where I live. I enjoyed doing it and my aim was to improve my perspective, which wasn't too bad. However, it did leave me with a feeling of just "colouring in a drawing" instead of painting something more artistically creative. I did enjoy painting it, but perhaps I would benefit from not doing so much detail in the under-drawing, rather focus more on the shadow and light, big shapes etc. To do this requires chosing the right type of scene and composition, so I'll dig into some of my thousands of photos and see what I can find. Alternatively, I'll have to get out there and do a painting in plein air.
A good honest review Liron, you managed to go through it and pick many interesting points and show the example paintings and value studies.
