- My Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro headphones have gotten quite grimy over the last couple years so I decided to revitalize the once-soft velour ear pads by giving them a proper cleaning.

I cried trying to put back on my ear pads.
+richyyy Use a tiny flat-head screwdriver like you would tire levers on bicycle rims. Super easy except around the band.
+richyyy i use my guitar pick, it's pretty easy

richyyy Heat them slightly with a hair dryer. Use a guitar pick to ease the ear pad flange over the edge of the lip.
Ouh god honey, you okay?
7 years later and i still find this useful
9 years later and its still useful
20 years later and it's still useful
Fun tip: most headphones have a little notch on the plastic part of the earpiece...that's so you can thread the elastic band on the earpiece through it and essentially screw it on. Don't try to stretch it back into place...use that notch!
I didn't notice the notch until 3 headphone pad changes later lol... game changing
Hopefully not too much of a douche-moment * fingers-crossed * - Somewhat long - You've been warned.
If that part is made of plastic you're buying too cheap stuff. The sound quality can be perfectly adequate and while admittedly I'm a bit harder on my hardware than I'd like - A sturdier yet lightweight metal construction is preferable. At least if you're mainly using them sitting down at the computer. For commuting and moving about and such it's a different story I reckon, but that's not what I'll be talking about. Nor is the scenario in the video unless I was wildly not paying attention (strong possibility ^^)
--- Douchebaggery Commences ---
If not for breakage due to falling off places then definitely because you will have nowhere near the same risk of material fatigue where one day they just snap - seemingly yet obviously not out of nowhere. Typically at a joint where they can pivot backward and forwards relative to the headband. Similarly, the internal build quality is usually miles better. Meaning you won't crack a soldered connection as easily and that famous If-they're-perfectly-set-on-my-head there's sound and/or mic coming through cleanly syndrome that cheaper ones tend to develop usually right around the warranty expiring is less likely (Curious - I know).
All of the above said - I get that not everyone has the money to spend on stuff like this - fair enough. Ask yourself though - Is it smarter to buy a new, cheap pair yearly, bi-annually or even more frequently for xx dollars or your regional equivalent or perhaps you pay 25-50% more for something that lasts you at least 3 years. Often longer.
A stand of some description especially if you're using wireless ones as I do is 100% worth it as well :)
Those you absolutely don't even have to buy, if you're handy you can probably make one yourself easy as pie. Sturdy base with some weight to it to stabilize it on your desk, yet not too wide, slightly flexible or rigid "stem" (my second language English fails me somewhat here) and a bit sticking out over it all on top. A bit rounded off or perhaps covered with a non-slidey material so it stays snugly on there without wobbling about unnecessarily. A storebought equivalent can have USB-passthrough and RGB and probably some other superfluous bells-and-whistles, but that's just what we in Sweden might call "lull lull". Nifty yet unnecessary for the primary function of it all.
Whelp that's my rambling post of the day, I hope. No promises though. If you read it all - Thank you and... I'm sorry? Eh - Not really. Imma just sip my morning tea now and not bother you further.
// Some Swedish guy
@@Zabiru- bro we're talking about ear cups not headphone construction. I have th900 mk2s I don't think I need to worry about construction quality.

Thanks for the tip! Tried it yesterday with my HD600 pads and foam behind the pads and the dust and clog is 98% gone! Good job!
Thank you for making this video. It's amazing that over 300K ++ people have dirty ear pads, and you've helped them clean them. Selling my DT-770 Pro's, so needed to clean them. Highly Appreciated!
how is it amazing ear pads are just like clothes they will get dirty
Old video still holds true today. I used a tiny drop of Dawn Platinum soap instead since I only keep Tide Pods on hands (for pod-parties) but this worked perfectly. I almost ordered new earpads from Beyerdynamic for my DT770 Pro set and it would have been $35. This cost me about 10 minutes of time and they feel as soft and fresh as ever. Thanks for the tip! I am so glad I didn't throw these out.
2:16, you can use a hair dryer to heat the plastic lip so it's easier to put back on. (According to Beyerdynamic manual)
+Scarecrow141 this!
Thanks!
Chad.
Suggestion for your future video: "How to: How to make a video about taking suggestions on future 'How To' type videos"!
true. i didn't take anyone's suggestion on the last How-To video on what to do THIS How-To video on so I really need that How-To: How-To video.
Awesomesauce Network Wow, what was that about? ha,ha,ha,ha.....

been meaning to bring back my DT770 Pros back to life and this video was perfect! Thanks Kyle!!

Great video! Washed my DT 770 pads the same way. A note of warning to the viewers: don't be too rough while cleaning; the stitches that connect the inner ring started to come off in one of my pads. Guess I'll be sewing those together, but the pads look clean.
Great video Kyle, love your "how to" series! :)
My headphones are like new. Thank you so much. This was helpful, entertaining, and to-the-point.
1:02 i have those bowls in fact i'm eating ice cream out of them right now!!

lol, this guy actually makes helpful videos with a funny twist
Thank you, the summer heat makes me want to clean them since I sweating so much xD
It works! I tried this with the pads for my DT 770 Pro and not only do they smell pleasant, they're also quite soft again.
Drying them out with a cool (or room temp) fan speeds up the process. When the velour pads are wet, they tend to stay wet for a long time. I don't know how they would handle a hair dryer, or heat sources, so try those at your own risk.
I did this like 6 monts ago. They're not just feeling way better after cleaning, they also smell pretty amazing afterwards. The good feel and smell lastet for Months, until the days got hotter lol. Just cleaned them again and hung them out for drying. Now i am really hyped for clean, amazing smelling ear pads. :D
Great video Kyle!
Machine washing is pretty safe too..never had any issues with that.
Thank you! After realizing that I don't have a lint roller and how important it is, I ordered one. My headphones will be clean in no time!
Just gave my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro's earpads a wash like in this video and now they smell so fresh and feel super soft again, thank you for the video :)
Been searching for advice on this everywhere. Thank you so much!
Am i the only one thinking that this looks like a recent good video but is 9 years old
Nah, I was thinking the same exact thing
WOW. Thank you for making this video. Exactly what I need to do to my K701 pads.
Thanks Kyle. This video gave me the push I needed to finally clean my hair gel encrusted velour earpads. They look brand new now :P
2:17 i sure was assertive when i was putting the ear pads back on. now they say welcome sir and good bye sir every time i put them on or take them off
Oh my god, this was so much easier than I thought it would be, thanks a bunch!
Thanks man, I know it's an old video, but this really was quick and simple solution to my dirty headphones :)
hey now my headphones dosen't smell like i have not showerd in 1 week. Thanks !
Thank you for this tip! I actually had no idea those came off. I just cleaned off years worth of horrible, nasty funk from my Sennheiser Game ONE headset earpads. They aren't perfect, but they're A LOT better than they were just half an hour ago as of this writing. Thank you again, I feel like this has saved my headset.
Its about time i start cleaning these things.
thank you very much!
9 years later I still find this helpful ❤
why did i find it so funny when kyle just randomly cut himself off at the end ahhahaha
wow 6 years after this video and it saved me from thinking of buying new pads for my DT 990 Pro. Thanks Kyle!
I just bought a pair of used Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee headphones from Facebook Marketplace. The previous owner kept it in excellent condition, but he did note that he's had these for a little over 2 years, and that there was a little wear on the pads. I think I might wash them tonight before I go to bed. Thanks for the tip!
This should work a treat on my crispy DT-770 pros. Thanks :)
NOW I KNOW. AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE!
G.I. Joe....dude, how old are you?
@TheChosenOne probably as old as you are or a little younger/older. Go Joe!
I just googled "how to clean velour headpad" and bam! Your old video from 2014 (been a sub since the beginning). My cat fell asleep on my cans and now they need some cleaning. Sure you can understand the struggle.
Awesome thanks for this, had these hadphones for 5-8 years probably and never cleaned (Sennheisier HD 555), my ears are itching just thinking about never cleaned 'em and had them for so long and also thanks for the cable management video
Really great video as always funny and great edited
That's a nice tech tip, I think someone should make a channel for all the tech tips out there
Can confirm on my DT990 Pro's that washing and drying cleaned them, had a little problem with (plastic/leather) that succoured to the headphone frame shrunk, a little finger work over the head pads restored them.
Also the foam is no longer compressed
Ive been using my turtle beach headphones for a year now, and all the sweat made them smell terrible. Since I’ve cleaned them, my gaming has smelt much more better. Thanks!
Thanks Bitwit!! Made my Beyer MMX300's feel like new :)
i love your sense of humor dude! ahahha
Been using the same headphones for about a year now and recently they make my inner ear itch for some reason. Hopefully cleaning the pads like this will help, thank you.
Nice! Awesome Video as ever Kyle. You had me laughing throughout the whole video. :)
Thanks broski! I needed this BAD.
Saved me $25 right here, Thanks for the clutch dude!
how do i do this while still wearing them
This man is a hero
thanks for this!
1:20 is what you want, he waffles for ages at the start
the only problem with this washing method is that it will soften the foam pads. Brand new pads have a certain firmness and retain their shape. Hand washed pads will be soft and lose shape easily.
Atriedis you again...damn your avatar! Lol.
Damn you . Scared the shit out of me again . I demand an apology :D
Switch to the RUclips dark theme and enjoy all these pics not working at all.
Dude, excellent video! Direct and to the point! I did the same on my T1 pads and they work great! PS: I tried buying Brainwatz pads and they destroyed the sound of the headphones...
brainwavs? thats really odd, my brainwavs are so comfortable and fit far easier than my actual cloud alpha pads, and without the strange, uncomfortable padding on the inside
@@TheGr0nchhe said sound. Not comfort
Thanks for the video! My headphones smell nice now lol
I think I will love the next video :)
The smart thing to do is to clean them the same way you clean your cloth and cold water if we talk about synthetic materials.
Most important is to wash them several times, even let them just take a clean water bath since some products can cause allergic reactions to your skin.
Kyle, thank you very much for your video. I got the MMX 300 from Beyerdynamic and the ear pads don't really feel the same anymore, so I was thinking about whether to buy new ear pads or there's a way to get the current ones feel like new. So I tried your method, and as expected, they look and feel like brand new.
Subscribed. :)
For those that keep asking yes you can use this with the astro a50s I have the first gen ones and I followed this step by step and my ear pads came out clean and smelling fresh. So there you go. enjoy
1:49 I remember oh so well 😂
nice to see how to clean, i got the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Headset by myself ;)
Useful and fun, thanks. Subbed.
It was so easy putting them back thanks to the to design
Thats help!
What kind of outro was that lol
I love that outro.
Your method worked well and saved me $34, thank you.
Man love your sense of humour :) pimp Kyle got me laughing hahaha thanks for the nice videos you do.... Just a quest what is the name of the tune that is playing on a background???
This also works for Astro a40s but you need to use dish soap the laundry detergent messes with the paint
I didn't even know I could remove mine, but I could and now they're so fresh again! Not a DT880 sadly.
A quick question here, is it also okay to dry them on a heater or will that ruin the texture/foam inside? Better to just air dry?
The reason I ask is I live in a colder country so air drying can take too long often and lead to worse smells than you started with so whenever I clean stuff I always have to either tumble dry it or dry it on/next to the heater or it will never dry and start to develop bad odour.
what do you do if the cusions on your headphones cant be removed? (like in my tb z300)
yeet the entire thing into water obviously
@@pomere_6521 gottem
got the same problem
guess we gotta live with it or just buy new ones :P
Is there any suggestion for cleaning the ones that dont remove? Like Astro a10
Thank you so much! And dubstep intro is awesome!!!! )
I found out that not doing this was the primary reason for my sudden outbreak of acne (duhh) .. thanks for the short guide.
Was a bit unsure how to do it lolol
just now i used this method to clean my Logitech g335. this video has been a great help to me
I bought a second hand pair of 990s, and the cushions were flat like they had been used years :/ so I done this and they seem as good as new thanks so much for this video !
Wait so do they unflatten after washing? How did you unflatten them?
Would this work for the akg k701's? They have this plastic piece that they are attached to but that shouldnt matter right?
Does this work for any headphones?
+Awesomesauce Network I have some Sony MDR ZX100's, will this cleaning process work on their pads too even though they're made out of a different material?
Will this work for the skullcandy slyr headset? I'm scared to try this method since my second pair of ear pass were destroyed when I put them in the washing machine, I'm scared that if I try this method that it'll tear the fabric and the memory foam will fall out.
Mine are drying now. It was soooooooooo dirty, I bought a replacemet but it sucked. Praying that its good!!!!!
thank`s it helped me a lot :D
thanks for the tips
Doubt: I have Redgear Cosmo 7.1 USB Wired Gaming Headphones (and speakers too!). Should I keep them(headphones) attach to pc all the time or plugged them only when I need them?
how would you go about doing this with AKG pads which aren't as easy to handle, and have that thin fabric in the middle which breaks off easily.
At the end of the video, those earpads are cleaned up? Unless I'm missing something they look the lint trap in our dryer. Is that normal? Because my earpads on my headphones are black with lots of white fuzz them. When I bought them, they were black fuzzy earpads. Now I just want to scrub them up and yank on them and yank on them until I have all the white fuzz/fibers removed. What am I missing?
How often do you guys clean yours? I'm going to do mines tonight and might start doing it once a month instead of like once a year lol
What about the inner portion of the earphones? I meant the cloth part where the sounds come out (mine is intact with the earphone unremovable). The worst part is that Im using the corsair vengeance 1500 which has the color cyan on the inner part and I think its the color is getting Darker. Any tips?
Can I do this with my ATH m50x's? They have the white Brainwavz ear pads.
i have an interface of Roland UA-55 and the sound of my new dt 770 pro (80 ohm) is really low volume, is it normal?
Just did this to my DT-990s, and one of the earpads unglued itself around the edges. GGs
Can hair in headphones cause high and low frequencies loss? I just got DT 770 250 ohm and when i play around with the sub on midi its like i pan from left to right when i play notes from low to high. So more highs on right and more lows on left. Im confused, help someone?
If ur going to do this with ur headphones ear pads i have 1 tip try using soft laundry detergent it helps so much to bring them to there original state
thanks, nice goku profile pic btw :D
woolite?
THANK YOU SO MUCH❤❤
mine are dry but when i squeeze them they still squeeze out some of the detergent they arent exactly like the 1s in the video, they use leather instead of furr
i have the hypex cloud flight the earpads are made of leather and fabric how do i clean them properly?
What about velour pads like the ones on the Fidelio X2's, They have plastic backing rings
