I've seen you girls for the first time on OSWAS last night. I really like your unconventional and honest opinion on this matter. Whisky, and especially Springbank, could be taken way too seriously this days, and that could lead to disappointments and anger for the potential fans. The thing with Springbank, is that while i found it a whisky with unique character, its position and rarity these days makes people not taste this whisky objectively. So often it has become a trophy bottle rather than an actual meaningful pursuit for the seasoned whisky drinker. Rachel if youre put off by the farm note of Springbank perhaps Hazelburn might be more your wheel house, the HZ10 is fabulous stuff.

Well done that you give an honest opinion about Springbank. All praise should be given to them for their no compromise true integrity ideology and they are without doubt the gold standard when it comes to what a distillery should be. However, their house style is not to everyone's taste, being a bit odd to say the least with quite a few which many would describe as "off-notes".
This is only my personal opinion but many today have turned things which they emotionally identify with, into pseudo religions or cults where their object of worship can do no wrong. Anyone who disagrees must be "put to death" or at the very least, "cancelled". Whether it's football teams, film stars, personalities and social influencers, or yes, even Whisky distilleries.

Glad to hear you wouldn't queue for it. I mean, seriously, queueing for whisky. How sad is that? I understand what people mean by 'funk' but it's a lazy term and it should be better defined. What other whisky region gets away with such a lazy descriptor (apart from Islay - guess what?). Speyside 'Green'; Island 'Coastal'? Funk, it's not good enough really but I kind of know what it is. Part distillate, part bourbon cask, part sherry cask and a bit of peat.
By the way, it's not obligatory to be a fanboy of Springbank. We all have our personal preferences and that was the case a few years ago. Some liked sherry whisky and some liked peat. Others liked Speyside and so on. These days it's become sacrilege to express doubt about Campbelltown and Springbank in particular. It's perfectly acceptable to like other whisky more than them. WT

So many things to comment on in this video...
'Florentine' being from Spain or France... and they say we Americans don't know geography. I was thinking Outer Mongolia, myself.
The SMWS naming reference. So fitting. 🤣
The tasting notes. Whiskey is the only food/beverage where the tasting notes can be the most disgusting thing imaginable but made OK by ending it with "but not in a bad way." Examples: it reminds me of bloated rhino carcass that's exploded in the sun...but not in a bad way. " "It reminds me of a pig farm's manure pit where you need to wear a gas mask...but not in a bad way." "It reminds me of my cat's throw up on a cold morning after I accidentally stepped in it with my bare feet...but not in a bad way."
Springbank has gotten so over-hyped and over-priced but at least it's honest whiskey. Can't say that much for its over-hyped big uncle, Macallan. Springbank 15 here in the US now costs a kidney and a first born son.
Camping out for a bottle? Or even camping out for anything? Ridiculous. I did that with friends when we were younger for Boston tickets and, though I like Boston, even back then I was like, "Why are we doing this? This is just dumb."
I got an advanced copy of Nine Inch Nail's first album Pretty Hate Machine and would listen to it non-stop. My brother's friends would all make fun of me saying it was freak-music and I was weird. Then, a year later, they all had NIN stickers on their car windows. I was like, :You hypocrites! I liked them before they were cool."
Speaking of liking something and someone before it's cool, I'm a rum aficionado and my hero is Richard Seale, the master distiller and master blender at the FourSquare distillery in Barbados. I'm sure in five years, when rum is 'the next big thing', everyone will be tossing his name around like they knew him the whole time. And here I am with a Richard Seale sticker on my car window way before he was cool, ya' hypocrites.

Also agree RE Macallan (over priced designer whisky in our opinion!)
OMG you saw it here first folks!!! Foursquare we already find is selling like hot cakes, you will be the ultimate rum hipster 🤣

@@TheGrailTastings Springbank is the blue-cheese of the whisky world. It could best be described as divisive, challenging and an acquired taste. Those that love it, LOVE it and wink at each other with that gentle nod of acknowledgement and those that hate it, LOATHE it. I fall into limbo in that I like it well enough but it's not really my palate. Billy Walker is my shaman and GlenAllachie is my elixir if that gives you any idea of where my palate lies so, while Springbank isn't bad, it's just not for me. I'm also a Glencadam kind of guy so I tend toward the sweet and fruity so Springbank's funk is off-putting (much like Wild Turkey's wet-dog funk). It's amazing how our senses are able to filter out data coming in whilst converting it into what we would call information.
Let us consider the fundamental difference between seeing, hearing and smelling: A person can see an incredible amount of material all at once, but may only hear and comprehend one sound (or a combination of sounds) at a time. The nose on the other hand, has the amazing ability to completely filter out what it considers common smells and bring you only those which are weird or exotic. Hence people who travel to different environments encounter new smells which the locals cannot pick up. Farmyard smells, plastic and burnt oil smells are three excellent examples.
In Shemos (Exodus) 20:15 the Torah informs us that "...And all the Jewish people *saw* the *sounds* and the flames, the sound of the Shofar and the mountain smoking; and the people saw and shuddered in fear and confusion and stood at a distance."
Here we see a description on how the Jewish people at Mount Sinai experienced all the human senses acting like eyesight. In other words, we "saw" sounds and smells without any filter.

Great idea! We have had people open them in front of us! Always good to know its going to be drunk and enjoyed!

I personally find sherried whisky boring and cloying unless there's oodles of peat or some obnoxiously loud spirit flailing around in there(Edradour is a good example of this). Neither of us have to apologise for not liking something after we've clearly given it a chance, it's just how it is. On the bright side, there's so little Springbank around you won't get offered a dram of it very often and have to explain why you don't like it. Imagine how often I've had to convince stubborn whisky people "no no, I have tried dozens and dozens of sherried whiskies, I really just don't like them".

Have you tried GlenAllachie 12? I find it to be the most complex sherried whiskey I've had in a while. There's no smoke or peat but the notes it does contain are hard to miss. I use it with non-whiskey drinkers to show them the various palates because even people who don't like whiskey are surprised to find their mouth is filled with cocoa three seconds after swallowing their sip. In a nice twist, I also find their very affordable 12 to be more complex than their 15 and other GlenAllachie expressions (though they're all delicious).

More than fair, we think there's a good chunk of the whisky community who are really out off by heavily sherried whiskies but also some who exclusively drink sherry matured drams. Always good to try something out of your usual we think, thanks for tuning in :) and agree with @bdwilcox definitely worth giving Glenallachie 12 a try!

Yes, I've tried Glenallachie 12, didn't get on with. I'm going to give them another go once they start tapping into the spirit that was made under Billy Walker in a couple years. I reckon it will be quite a stark contrast with the stock they inherited from the previous owners. Anyway, I say Rachel's allowed to not get on with Springbank without having to apologise for it!
