As he is mentioned as one of the greater, so to say main gods, I mean Gaia and Uranos generation. Also "Born of Zeus as a serpent". It was said, Alexander the Great was fathered by Zeus in the form of a serpent. Coincidence? Yes. It is. But a good little tidbit.
This song is so beautiful...it might all be a prank but the actual song itself is just heart-wrenchingly gorgeous. Particularly "Pirsoner to his king", it makes me weep - Darren Korb's voice really does sound like a voice that moved the gods, even Hades. Magical.
I love how this game played on other versions of Zagreus from mythology. One disturbing, where Zues fathered persephone under a guise of a snake and later fathered Zagreus with her, once again in the form of a snake. Another where Zagreus/Dionysius is murdered by titans(on orders from Hera) and the surviving heart is planted into Semele or Zues's leg to be regrown into Dionysius. And ofcourse the fact of Zagreus and Dionysius probably really being the same person, it is possible that Zagreus was simply an earlier more stoic version of Dionysius.
I know I'm late, but there's a piece of dialogue where Zeus says that he gets along so well with Zagreus that he might just start calling him his own son instead of the son of Hades, which I thought was another great nod to this little factoid.
I just realized something. Orpheus is singing about the real depiction of Zagreus. Zagreus says it won’t spread far and wide, as Orpheus plays to a small audience...he hopes. This implies that the real reference to Zagreus we know today is entirely false, created by Zagreus and Dionysus to mess with Orpheus, but it spread and became what Zagreus is known for in real life. But that begs the question: If a fake version of Zagreus was the inspiration for the game’s main character, how do we know what Zagreus was in the first place?
well , that is just the company making fun of the actual origin of Zagreus in myths. But if we go deeper , the answer is very simple: the Mycanean Olympian Pantheon! Even Ancient Greece had an Ancient Greece....it was called Mycanean Greece. Some of the gods of Greek Mythology comes from there , with Zagreus been one of them. Pan and Hermes , for example: were the same god in Mycanean Greece , which had "Pan" and "Hermes" as epitaths , which Hellenist Greece divided into two gods. While Aphrodite was close in her myths to the goddess Ishtar from Babylonia. Mycanean Greece also revered chtonic gods far more than sky gods , making more reverence and rituals for Poseidon and Hades , rather than Zeus. Their idea of Zagreus is that he would be the Heir of Olympus.
We don't. Like every mythology and religions, there are alot, alot of versions of the same stories and the same characters and not all versions survived to the modern day. Zagreus is especially hard to research, because his origins not really known to us. This is frustrating because it's seems that he is a very important god, at least for the olympians. In one versions he will be the future king of the gods, in other versions he is the heir to the throne of the underworld.

Not sure about ancient greece, but it is possible since the ancient sumers had their eunuch male singers. It's one of my favourite things to come home in the game and hear Orpheus singing this. First time I just stood there listening to the whole song before doing anything else. The whole game is so ridiculously polished and thought of, and then among all the already great stuff there's pearls like this song. It must have been scary prospect to write a character who is a super amazing musician to a voice-acted game, so it's a good thing you had a super amazing musician on the payroll!
I love the fact that Dionysus laughs his ass off at the fact that Orpheus took their prank seriously and wrote a whole SONG on it, while Zagreus is like, no no you don't understand, you're not the one who has to listen to him singing it in the House! It's fantastic
What I love about this song is that as serious and somber as it sounds to people who haven't played the game, it's basically just a song filled with the stories Zagreus told Orpheus. It's not meant to be taken seriously. And yet, a genuinely beautiful soprano.
I love how Supergiant managed in include all the contradictory elements in Zagreus's actual lore in Greek Mythology as basically an in-joke among him and Dionysus.

God, I love this song so much. After these beautiful high notes, the deeper ending with the repeated "endlessly toiling, doomed to remain" hits differently
honestly I think it's such a cool, and also funny idea that the original, real life historical myth of zagreus was just a prank. I dunno I just think it's neat how they actually decided to explain that in the game, even if it is mostly played for a laugh.
At the current time of not finishing Orpheus' arc I like to imagine that the first time Zagreus told him none of it was true he had already wrote most of the lyrics and finished out of spite to get a double prank on Zagreus by acting like he didn't believe it
"Endlessly toiling, doomed to remain..." Just now completed Heat 32 and the convo with Skelly broke my heart...after so many hours poured into the game, I came to the realization that "Endlessly toiling, doom to remain..." was a foreshadowing and not just a poetic license.
Even though the context of the lyics push this song to meme territory, I equate this song with victory. I first heard this song when I returned from my first successful escape attempt. Hearing Orpheus sing about me after I finally kicked Hades ass felt so satisfying, I felt like a conquering hero. Then I stopped to pay attention to the lyrics...

After failing to kill himself many times he accepted his fate as the world's musician and vowed to sing for his love for eternity, but was horribly murdered after a bunch of Dinonysus's followers got extremely drunk and became angry at him for singing about love while not being with anyone.
So hey violently tore him from limb to limb, and after sobering up, they realized they killed the best musician the world had every known, so they threw his remains into the river along with his lyre, where his severed head continued to sing until it was found by Apollo
@@themushroominside6540 I thought he got ripped apart because he was singing in such a depressing way after he failed to rescure Eurydice that it literally made crops die, women miscarry and stuff like that?
The Orphic Hymn is such a liar 🤥, fake and falsehood.
No seriously man, I was kidding
Although it was a prank in this game, without context, the lyrics of this are pretty haunting...
I like the implementation of the other Zagreus story (where he was, basically, proto-Dionysus).
Yep
@@-Zagreus- Also I like the third line: "'First of his name". A nice nod for the proto-Hades version, where Zagreus was the warden and Hades was the place of the underworld.
The Orphic Hymn is such a liar 🤥, fake and falsehood.
This song is so beautiful...it might all be a prank but the actual song itself is just heart-wrenchingly gorgeous. Particularly "Pirsoner to his king", it makes me weep - Darren Korb's voice really does sound like a voice that moved the gods, even Hades. Magical.
yeah its got so much soul poured into it, bravo supergiant
I love how this game played on other versions of Zagreus from mythology. One disturbing, where Zues fathered persephone under a guise of a snake and later fathered Zagreus with her, once again in the form of a snake.
Another where Zagreus/Dionysius is murdered by titans(on orders from Hera) and the surviving heart is planted into Semele or Zues's leg to be regrown into Dionysius.
And ofcourse the fact of Zagreus and Dionysius probably really being the same person, it is possible that Zagreus was simply an earlier more stoic version of Dionysius.
Don't forget! In ancient Greece, a leg injury was the polite way to refer to a ball injury, so that opens for an interesting possibility...
The Orphic Hymn is such a liar 🤥, fake and falsehood.
I know I'm late, but there's a piece of dialogue where Zeus says that he gets along so well with Zagreus that he might just start calling him his own son instead of the son of Hades, which I thought was another great nod to this little factoid.
The fact that Hades wanted this song to spread so that in future he will have nothing linked to zagreus is the most fucked up shit.
Yeah, the worst thing he said to Zagreus for sure. It hits harder when you get it after you complete the game aswell.
@@phantasosxgames8488 I love history nerds. Thank you for you wisdom!
@@phantasosxgames8488 do you know where they found zagreus in the linear b records I'm just curious I've been looking at them recently because I'm researching Dionysus but there's only like 3 tablets with his name on so I haven't seen much about other gods during that sdjfh, I think I saw reference to one where Persephone had a son but I don't think his name was zagreus (but her name was still Kore so IDK maybe it's like that I'm really tired)

I love this song. Poetically and melodically, its so stunningly, achingly beautiful; but the sheer amount of suffocating second-hand embarrassment I felt while listening to it in game for the first time is almost a ballad worthy feat of its own. That's how you know you've written something excellent. The joke leading up and culminating in this was pulled off masterfully. I just love it.
Yeah its basically a joke in the context of the game but this actually makes for some *really* good acoustic progressive when all is said and done.
i love how the devs decided to incorporate orphism into the game by adapting it as just an elaborate prank from dionysus & zagreus that results in one of the most beautiful pieces of music i’ve ever heard

The first time I heard this song, I laughed so hard for atleast 10 minutes and realized, "Damn, the mad lads really recorded a whole unique song just for a joke, that's so awesome writting"

And I love it

This part legit gave me chills when i first heard it, ITS SO GOOD
Darren Korb hit those notes like they owed him money
I'm actually interested to hear from any historian if this high-pitched singing was considered 'fashionable' or 'normal' in Ancient Greece. Because I wouldn't be suprised if it was indeed.
Not sure about ancient greece, but it is possible since the ancient sumers had their eunuch male singers. And I don't know when the castrati or the castration of prepubescent male singers for the highest pitch was banned, but there is an archived record of a castrato. And that, my friend is even higher than Darren Korb's falsetto here. So it is probable. But as are you, I am curious too. Cheers!

Orpheus: Sing of Zagreus oh muse
Zag: Or don’t
This is literally the actual Orphic religious doctrine in song form, like, outside of the context of the game this is literally how it goes down in real life mythological account almost beat for beat... this is so funny oh my gods, it's literally correct according to the Orphism religious doctrine... The funny thing is that Zagreus, in greek myth, is seen as the Orphic Dionysus, Orpheus Dionysus? See what they did there? This game is genius.

I was actually curious if Zagerus was a real character in Greek myth so I actually searched him up. Needless to say I was quite confused when reading about his link to the God of Wine. It was incredibly genius to put this connection into the game, even if they make it a joke.
@@phantasosxgames8488 yeah there's a lot of funny references to dark stuffs the gods did in the actual mythology.
my second hand embarressment hearing this for the first time was only seconded to how in awe I was because of how beautiful it was. that voice UGH
And this is precisely why you never roll bluff against a bard.
I love how this implies in the world of Hades, the whole of the Orphic Mysteries are just a prank played by Zagreus and Dionysus on Orpheus.
I think Orpheus is perfectly conscious that Zagreus stories are fake. He doesn'y care, it amuses him and gives him inspiration for lyrics
Beautiful…Painful…the god died young…the god never died…the god named Zagreus…the god of feast and wine…
The Orphic Hymn is such a liar 🤥, fake and falsehood.
I just realized that the reason Orpheus trusts everything Zagreus says is because his doubt was what separated him from Eurydice 😭
i cant believe hades just lets him play this song
The best twunk Zagreus
I love the fact that Dionysus laughs his ass off at the fact that Orpheus took their prank seriously and wrote a whole SONG on it, while Zagreus is like, no no you don't understand, you're not the one who has to listen to him singing it in the House! It's fantastic
Goosebumps on this song. Korb never disappoints, and this whole soundtrack is just brilliant.
Imagine telling people more than 2000 years ago that people today would still be writing what are essentially Orphic hymns

At the current time of not finishing Orpheus' arc I like to imagine that the first time Zagreus told him none of it was true he had already wrote most of the lyrics and finished out of spite to get a double prank on Zagreus by acting like he didn't believe it
"Endlessly toiling, doomed to remain..."
Just now completed Heat 32 and the convo with Skelly broke my heart...after so many hours poured into the game, I came to the realization that "Endlessly toiling, doom to remain..." was a foreshadowing and not just a poetic license.
The "prisoner to his king part" makes me think Orpheus would be an amazing metal singer
Hearing passages of the Iliad being sung like this is would be too beautiful♡

Pool of Styx poured me out and i heard this wonderful song. Im so excited for H2. No worry about that you mess it up; its just gettin better.
I was so lucky, and the first time this got played to me was the time I returned for the first time back from the surface. So essentially came back to Orpheus singing praise that I suceeded.
See, after Zagreus asks Orpheus to stop the first time, I assumed that Orpheus was just doing it to troll him back.

One of my fav moments I had through the game, and a testament to the wonderful gameplay driven story, I had fought hades for like the 6th or 7th time and failed like many’s first couple attempts and was pretty salty until I awoken back at home and heard this song being played. It was such a beautiful moment for me. I recently went back to the game like many after the sequel’s announcement, and beat hades on like my 2nd total attempt and actually felt pretty empty. Cause part of what makes the game so great is that your love for the characters and drive to reach the top is a LOT more involved when you’re on your like 26th attempt.
When I first heard this song in the game I had to stop whatever I was doing and literally just sat there listening in awe
I think…this might be my favorite song in the game. It was like his first song he sang when I got him to do so, and it really made me stop moving and just listen
Hahahaha this is like a meme in the game and make a directly reference of the other history of who is Zagreus... Very cool mate
On one hand, I loved to hear this after coming back cuz I love Orpheus' music.
On the other hand I was embarrased, my lies were inmortalized.
my theory is that Chronos believed this song and captured Dionysius instead of Zagreus thinking they were the same person
The way this game takes you by surprise with this! I emerged from Styx, went to check on everyone and WAIT... What is that you're singing?? I had to put my controller down and listen to it.
