  • The elite Marine unit of Navajo soldiers whose cryptic code remained unbroken during World War Two was honored at the annual Veterans' Day parade in New York City. The Code Talkers are using their trip as a bid to raise funds for a museum to honor their contribution to defeating the Japanese. Few of the original 400 Navajo Code Talkers are still alive. They say unless a museum is built quickly, their experiences will die with them. Nathan King reports:

Great men who helped in a big way to win the war. They should have been recognized a long time ago. They never talked about this when I was in school. I never heard about these great men until I watched the movie Navajo Code Talkers. Nothing like waiting till they are old to give them the credit they deserve.

@cameronaz00 I could not agree with you more. The code talkers should have been honored IMMEDIATELY after the code became non-classified; probably even before then. These brave men couldn't even go home after WWII and Korea and tell their families--or speak of the code at all, for that matter--the brilliant and wonderful thing they had done for our country because the code was still classified. Thank you so much!!

I was fortunate to grow up in Arizona from right after WWII to adulthood. Back then, native culture was a part of our culture and no one thought much about it. There was the Phoenix Indian School (to my understanding, now defunct), where member all tribes could come to learn modern world trades and skills. Those that lived in the Valley while attending, sent their children to regular public schools and there were always native kids in our classes; just part of the population. Political correctness has not yet taken hold, so we simply treated everyone the same. I do not remember how I learned, but I heard of these men and what they did, while still a child. I think I liked it better when we could all be one, rather than divided by ethnicity.
