The highlight of the gay Teletubby controversy for me is that BBC had to make an official statement I’m which they said that Tinky WInky is not gay but in fact “[he] is simply a sweet, technological baby with a magic bag.” Which is such a wonderful sentence. As an aside my new favorite coy way to ask if someone is gay is to say “is he...you know... a sweet techno baby with a magic bag?”

Gotta admit I was a little blindsided upon seeing the topic of this one. Never occurred to me how the Teletubbies costumes would actually undergo evolution. And also looking back on how relentless the teases and mockery of the show was, I do wonder just how much of it was legitimate or just riffing. Honestly the last time I saw Teletubbies in any capacity was in Doctor Who during a lousy season-ending story arc when the Master was watching the show and marvelling at creatures with TVs in their stomachs.
Funny enough, he *DID* die of heart failure. But that was in 2007, a full year before even California legalized gay marriage. On another funny note about the Falwell family, his son (named after him, hence the Sr. in the dad’s name), took over for his dad in the family religious and university business. That was until relatively recently when it became public that the son was a swinger who liked to watch his wife play with others’ Tinky Winkies. He’s since resigned. 😂
Teletubbies was my childhood. Regarding the controversies, the Lion and Bear was a huge one I remember. Usually those ‘magical events’ would be shown in multiple episodes, and that included the Lion and Bear. So episode 11 was only the first episode it was shown in. It actually showed up in multiple episodes (granted it was the exact scene each time). I’ve always wanted to know how the idea for it came to be, and how the creators initially reacted to it’s controversy. And even despite the controversy, I remember the Lion and Bear being on loads of merchandise (jigsaws, books, magazines etc.). I’ve always found the whole Tinky Winky handbag controversy hilarious as well. One correction with the costumes is that the articulation was actually done by the performers. In the hands, there were controls that were like bike brakes. One hand controlled the mouth and the other hand controlled the eyes. Great video Dan 👍🏻
The bizarre thing was that it wasn't banned in the UK, and by the time the merch was made the ban was already in place. The US banned the sketch after the first airing and they redid some episodes to remove the Lion and Bear. The ban was slow in the UK which is why they kept putting it in episodes. The first episode to have the Edited Sketch wasn't until late 2000, and that version only appeared in two episodes.

Surprisingly I never saw the edited version as a child. I sometimes wonder had I seen that version, would I have liked it, or just hated it as much as I hated the scary version.
Yea the original sketch was used in 14 episodes, I think. Again, only two that used the edited version and only near the very end of the show's run. That would explain why you never saw the edited version.
Honestly I’m AMAZED the fact that made character owning a HANGBAG which anyone can do in real life caused ‘controversy’ 😂 like seriously, it’s a magic handbag, grow up 🤣

@@TheEnderMineMC I know about the pizza cam from watching yt videos about the old animatronics but actually never saw it in person at the location. Might as well throw some stuff in here: 3:45 Dave Thompson has said that he was 8 foot in costume, while when Simon Shelton was in costume he was as tall as John Simmit/Dipsy. 4:17 Actually no, the heads were controlled with grips in the hands. Dave Thompson told us that they did break on occasion and made the eyes shoot straight up. 4:42 Again, not sure. That image is part of a sketch used in one episode. Unless I'm missing something, don't think this is right. They did, however, add the pattern on the feet to make sure they didn't slip off the hills. 10:43 Yea this was terrifying. I would know; I saw it when I was less than a month old. Still, very well researched and goes into way more detail than I would think a Disney-focused channel would muster.
I remember watching them when I was younger! Man, those were good times. The costumes are pretty creepy in some aspects, tbh, but I'm not too bothered by that. I also remember watching an old video where a Darth Maul Teletubby arrives via a starfighter and kills them all really violently! XD
OH MY GOODNESS! I was obsessed with Teletubbies as a wee toddler, according to my mom. (I remember having the toys.) I think my mom also said I was terrified of the vacuum character. 😂 You as the baby sun, the cursed image and the controversies had me cackling! Great video as always, Dan!
When I was little I used to love this show. I loved the setting most of all and wanted to live in a house like that. But more so i loved it when I watched it with my grandma, because she loved pointing out when they would show shots of pretty flowers, or rabbits in the background.
Apparently I would cry when a Christmas special we had on video ended so my mum and dad were forced to watch over and over again also I was absolutely terrified of Noo Noo
And for those of us who were young adults when Teletubbies came out, it will always hold a special place in our memories as that show that was so psychedelic that we would literally watch it while high on drugs.
DAN, did you know in Mexico we had a ripoff called "tele chobis"? Those things were horrible, they had just a few episodes on national TV... Look at them and tell me what do you think
5:41 I'm 22 and I still feel uncomfortable whenever I see the vacuum. It scared the hell out of me when I was little. I had a fear of vacuums because of it. despite that i still liked and watched the show tinky winky was my favourite.
The original Teletubbies series was literally the happiest, most comforting thing I ever saw due to how endearing the characters are. Tinky Winky stood out to me the most. Now, I'm not gay myself and only heard about the controversy behind this character many years after I saw all the DVDs and VHS tapes we could rent or buy. But even if he wasn't potentially gay, Tinky Winky would still have possessed the protective vibe that I must have felt when I saw him on TV so many years ago. Even though I would have wanted to see the original set for the show myself, I can understand why the creators wouldn't want too much attention to be drawn to the hole. But I will never completely forget the bond that the main characters had for one another; that really shaped my perspective on their crazy shenanigans. Seeing them interact with each other in their silly gibberish, whether it be while understanding how things appearing from "far away" work or giving each other big hugs, really gave me the impression that they were harmless beings in spite of their immense height and weight. Anyway, sorry for the rant. This was a great vid on the show, and hearing the theme again was a silly yet kind of nostalgic experience. I definitely don't need to see the reboot after all the precious childhood days spent watching the Teletubbies dance, light up their screens, eat toast and custard, and have a blast proclaiming yet again that they "love each other very much".
the lion and the bear episode always freaked me out as a kid... now whenever i mention it to a friend & they tell me they haven't seen it, i look it up to show them cause their reactions are always hilarious 🤣 amazing vid as always!!!
As someone who used to scream in terror every time the lion and the bear was shown, even just the short clips of it in this video still make me (a fully grown adult) inexplicably nervous to this day 😂
The Lion and The Bear episode scared me so much as a kid. I remember literally running out the room in tears cause they freaked me out so bad. Honestly they still do! I think it was their creepy voices, and the fact their eyes could spin around lol.
I remember being in middle school in 2000 and Teletubbies being HUGE. Girls would have little mascot keychains of them on their backpacks, often times more than one, there would be groups who had assigned each person a teletubby. . .it was wild. I also remember the Tinky Winky controversy, and that was also a HUGE thing at my middle school.
Holy snot I was watching Teletubbies as a baby-toddler (I was born in Jan 1997) and I had absolutely NO IDEA that it actually got big among older kids, too.
My brother was just the right age for Teletubbies when it came out so I absorbed a lot from him. I was not prepared for the idea of them reproducing though. Great episode.
I clicked immediately when I saw you were covering a huge part of my childhood, The Teletubbies! Po was my freaking spirit animal! Once again your laughter has brought laughter into my life and I appreciate you even more for it. Would you consider doing a White Rabbit Costume evolution? I've always thought it was interesting how the parks went from having The White Rabbit as a mere plastic bunny mask to the White Rabbit we know today.
The absolute chaotic acceptance from Disney Dan is not what I was expecting but good lord am I even more happier to be a fan!! If Tinky Winky helped mold me into the queer person I am today then I'm okay with that!!!
Dan, you should look into doing videos about parades from international parks! Japan has some of the most stunning parades (there’s a particular Peter Pan float that’s jaw dropping) and also some of the wackiest (their Easter parade is wild). This video was pure chaos and my partner and I were in hysterics the whole time. The cursed image will live rent free in my head forever.
In the newest episodes on netflix, the Sun is now a baby of color, which isn't a problem at all, but the fact is that they rushed the CGI so much on it like, "oh yeah, this time we don't have time for you", it makes it the weirdest version so far
To be honest I never knew that Teletubbies existed outside of the UK! I was 7 when the first series aired, so ‘too old’ for the target audience but I loved it! I remember you could get tubby toast and tubby custard at the supermarket! I have since seen the characters at Alton Towers and Butlins holiday camp (with my own children) and their shows are always adorable 🥰 very fun and informative video!
I don't get how they're getting mad at Tinky winky. What about Gracie Grace from Animal crossing? They got mad at her because she had a deeper male voice. You should do a video on that! Edit: Tinky Winky's handbag is essential. He can't just shove everything he needs in his nonexistent pockets!
You made basically a whole essay on the history of teletubbies.......literally teletubbies I respect that XD, I wouldn't have been able to do that without losing the sanity I have left
That is a great video Dan, now as you've covered Barney and Teletubbies could you cover the costume evolution of the Bananas In Pajamas or the costume characters in The Wiggles please?
Honestly that is random af. A purple toddler thing with a handbag is random but associating it with it being g*y is just strange. Also this was literally made for toddlers
If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure Jesus would treat the Falwells, or Pat Robertson, or Joel Osteen, the same as those guys in the Temple at Jerusalem.
It's great to see you evolute 4 characters from my home turf in the UK and you're so not wrong about the lion and bear segment. Although I wasn't too intimidated by the bear but the lion was pure nightmare fuel especially the close ups. I believe the segment was banned in the US. Good work Dan.
The notable memory I had with the show was there was a massive shortage on merchandise and toys as the BBC underestimated how popular the show became and my mother managed to get me two of the toys despite a lot of stores having a one per customer policy.
Oh yeah, there totally was. The ONE year my mother EVER went out shopping at a mall on Black Friday was so she could get me a Laa Laa doll with a belly that did multi-colored light shows and activities from KB Toys.
Not gonna lie, I absolutely adored The Teletubbies growing up, I always pictured them as my own family😂😂 I pretended my dad was Tinky Winky, my mom was LaLa, my older brother was Dipsy, and I was Po, again, I WAS A KID!😂 My goodness Dan, you are too funny with your laugh and that intro had me cackling😂😂 They were so cute and fun to watch as a kid, and I'm glad that lion & bear episode was re-filmed, because that was really weird to watch in this video😅
Dan replacing the baby’s face in the sun in the intro was HILARIOUS 🤣

Anyway, sorry for the rant. This was a great vid on the show, and hearing the theme again was a silly yet kind of nostalgic experience. I definitely don't need to see the reboot after all the precious childhood days spent watching the Teletubbies dance, light up their screens, eat toast and custard, and have a blast proclaiming yet again that they "love each other very much".
3:12 the fact that Dan said there’s LITERALLY a dipstick on this bros head makes it even funnier 😂
Dan just describing and telling the History of it is more entertaining then anything else
Is it bad my grown ass got excited seeing this notification? Maybe but dang did I like the teletubbies as a kid 🤣
Also please not Dan as the sun LMAO
Nah, I don't think it's bad. I was also a childhood fan.
the lion and the bear episode always freaked me out as a kid... now whenever i mention it to a friend & they tell me they haven't seen it, i look it up to show them cause their reactions are always hilarious 🤣 amazing vid as always!!!
@@spencerpetunia8268 I'm not sure if it was a common thing or if I was just surrounded by reeeaaaallly weird folks lol.
Looking back I have to appreciate just how much went into making the original series
I didn't think they could make these guys even more unsettling looking, but they accomplished it. Oh dear.
That most recent Twinky Winky is a thing of nightmares
twinky winky 💀💀💀
why was this more entertaining than i expected?
I used to watch Teletubbies when i was a Toddler. Thanks for the video. brings back memories.
You are REALLY good at what you do. Thanks for the laugh and walk down memory lane
I remember always falling asleep to teletubbies as a child. The calm way they spoke was my childhood asmr.
A new DisneyDan video AND a new Offhand Disney video in the same day?! today is a good day
In the newest episodes on netflix, the Sun is now a baby of color, which isn't a problem at all, but the fact is that they rushed the CGI so much on it like, "oh yeah, this time we don't have time for you", it makes it the weirdest version so far
That pretty much like about the series were the bunnies, simply hopping, sitting doing bunny things.
Your laugh makes my day every time and today I needed it. This episode is perfect
Same here
0:06 BEST INTRO EVER YAHOO
dan laughing at his own dad jokes will never get old
To be honest I never knew that Teletubbies existed outside of the UK!
Tubby Toast and Tubby Custard? I would've LOVED those as a toddler/preschooler! :D
@@spencerpetunia8268 they were really tasty! I used to love the little pink pots of custard! 😀
@@spencerpetunia8268Yep

Dans personality reminds me of like a dad joke😂❤I love his personality and his Puns always makes me laugh 😆❤😂🤣❤
Obviously puns will make someone laugh
I don't get how they're getting mad at Tinky winky. What about Gracie Grace from Animal crossing? They got mad at her because she had a deeper male voice. You should do a video on that! Edit: Tinky Winky's handbag is essential. He can't just shove everything he needs in his nonexistent pockets!
great timing on my part, taking a sip of water when he said "dis-pee" .. snorting out water as well as choking on it at the same time kinda hurts :P
Yes Dan, I am aware of how Teletubbies shaped my personality
I was a toddler in the early 2000's so alot of shows shaped my personality lol
You made basically a whole essay on the history of teletubbies.......literally teletubbies
I respect that XD, I wouldn't have been able to do that without losing the sanity I have left
The robo-vacuum-R2D2 thing is named Noo-Noo. This is coming from a nearly-20 year old who has spent a little too much time thinking about Teletubbies
i wasnt expecting to laugh about something about teletubbies but i was dying laughing
That is a great video Dan, now as you've covered Barney and Teletubbies could you cover the costume evolution of the Bananas In Pajamas or the costume characters in The Wiggles please?
i lost it at
"MY GOD, YOU COULNT KEEP DIPSY AWAY FROM A HAT"
I'm scared, but excited.the time has come
LaLa was MY teletubby in the late 90s 😂 my grandma even made me a LaLa costume for Halloween in 1999
This was both hilarious and educational.
😂 Thanks to Dan, my day feels complete!
As a Christian myself, we don’t all make up weird controversies.
Yup same
Honestly that is random af. A purple toddler thing with a handbag is random but associating it with it being g*y is just strange. Also this was literally made for toddlers
Yea only the ones with skeletons in the closet do that
If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure Jesus would treat the Falwells, or Pat Robertson, or Joel Osteen, the same as those guys in the Temple at Jerusalem.
4 year old me LOVED the bear & lion episode, was my favourite one and i had small blow-up things of them i used to play with
Dipsy would love playing Team Fortress 2 for the hats.
I'm less than a minute in and I'm laughing hysterically. 🤣 I actually watched this show as a very young child.
today i learned that teletubbies canonically reproduced....
thanks dan!
It's great to see you evolute 4 characters from my home turf in the UK and you're so not wrong about the lion and bear segment. Although I wasn't too intimidated by the bear but the lion was pure nightmare fuel especially the close ups. I believe the segment was banned in the US. Good work Dan.
That fucking close up!!!!
@@Erika-pc6vx Tell me about it!! I couldn't sleep for 2 weeks. No wonder it was never shown in the US
The notable memory I had with the show was there was a massive shortage on merchandise and toys as the BBC underestimated how popular the show became and my mother managed to get me two of the toys despite a lot of stores having a one per customer policy.
Tiddly tubies are the most cursed thing I've seen in a while
I feel offended because I'm a hard-core Tubby fan
@@2021-PresentTubbySupporter8Same
The Teletubbies when they went to Americas Got Talent was absolutely amazing! I hope u have seen it Dan!
It still gets me that the little kid who played the sun has a kid now.
I used to have plushys of each of these guys. The fact you informed me they now have children has really made me question humanity.
Imagine if Mad Max took a wrong turn and entered the Tubbytronic Superdome
I always thought the Tiddlytubbies where the younger siblings of the Teletubbies
They are
I used to watch telly tubbys when I was young. Now I realise how weird they were 🤣
This really made my list of favorite Disney Dan videos!
tinky winky is 10 feet tall as a child, just imagine how tall a full scale adult teletubbie would bee
This was AWESOME. I'm 70 by the way!
Duggle Dee and Umby Pumby are the best baby names
All 8 of them (MiMi, Daa-Daa, Ping, Baa, RuRu, Duggle Dee, Nin, & Umby Pumby) are "Tiddlyriffic" names
that Lion could be an SCP with its razor sharp fangs
i would love to see a evoloution of spongebobs costumes (mostly for stage since i love spongebob the musical)
Me too
