i've been playing guitar for close to 3 years and this may be the most clear and non-intimidating approach to theory that i've seen yet... thanks a lot man
Thanks Troy, I actually play slide upright with a finger slide but rather than the E or G tuning I use the GBDGBD tuning as I like southern rock, Im finding these patterns very useful.
I have heard this explained a number of times over the years and it just did not make sence until now.j Ok-- I'm all in. It is time to subscribe and start paying for these lessons. I have found my instructor.
I just watched your video on playing sleepwalk in open G, Would you have the tabs for that? What key where you playing F???. Thanks for ALL your help.I have finally settled on open G.
If your playing your Lap Steel In open "G", would the other members of the band, say the guitar player, have to be playing in the Key of "G" or "G-miner" also ?
Troy...I was checking out your website...man you have a lot of content. I am going to sign up for sure. Quick Question....I see Open G defined as DGDGBD....you define open G as GBDGBD. Which is it?
Thats kind of the weird thing about tunings, us that theres lots of ways to set up an "open G" or a "C6" or whatever tuning you can think of. C6 for example, is most commonly known as C E G A C E, but if you tuned a guitar to C G C A E C, that would still be a "C6" tuning, but its just not what people think of as a "C6" tuning. G B D G B D, D G D G B D, and G D G B D G are all open G. Confusing, I know. you'll figure out the nuances eventually. Have Fun!
So this is gonna sound kind of dumb but I finally bought myself a beginner rogue lap steel to learn on and I want to do the open G but I’ve noticed the string tension is really tight. Should I use C6 strings or guitar strings? Either way the string that are on there are not great.
Can anyone tell me what tuning David Lindley uses on Jackson Browne's Running on Empty and These days? I've been learning Running on Empty in Open E but am wondering if this is the most efficient tuning for this song. I'm using a 6 sting lap steel. Thanks to anyone who responds!
Hello mr. Brenningmeyer. Thank you for al your time and skills you put out in these very helpfull lessons on youtube. I have a question for you ad i hope you can find the time to provide me with an answer. I recently got my self an old Framus lapsteel. Im trying to find the right tuning and i stumbled upon an open g tuning. Now here is the hing. Your open g tuning is different from the open g tuning i know wich is D G D G B D. Are there diiferent types of open G? I dont understand. Since the Framus is an old lady, i do not want to put to much pressure on her. What can i do, what is the right tuning? PLease help me and my ol' lady! Kind regards from Culemborg, Holland. Laurens.
After two years, you've already likely found the answer, but just in case, there are indeed two types of open G tuning. The open G tuning you're using is called "low bass G tuning". What's being used here is called "high bass G tuning" and it is the standard tuning for a dobro. Either one is correct, though the one you're using would probably put a bit less stress on your Framus.
@@LessonsWithTroy Thanks Troy, I appreciate your advice.I have a Hofner 111 Standard from the 1960s but I have another later lapsteel that I can change the strings on and get practicing this piece, Open G strings it is.

Another wonderful lesson. I think the full major scale over the I chord sounded nice. You started to have a Tex-Mex flavor to it.

my brain is now scrambled
Love it. Would love to hear some compression & distortion on this lesson, to give it some bluesy swampy Justin Johnson type haunting sound.
Totally excellent. Rodge David
Very cool !
This is great stuff Troy!
I notice you use open d most of your lap steel lessons. There are a few open g. What would each tuning be used for?
What is the most common tuning for lap steel?
Thank you=you opened the door……☮️🎶🔛🌎
Brilliant!
Thank you
This is superb... Thank you very much
THANK YOU

......generally Ken. then they would all be in key!
What's the string gauge for this tuning? Thanks :)

GBDGBD is for Squareneck

You might want to buy a set of strings for the tuning you want
@@LessonsWithTroy mainly open G or open A.
What is that you have under your strings on both the lap steel and the pedal steel?

He's not playing alot of harmonies on it. You should be fine in Open D or E I'd say. A lot of high single note stuff.

Hi Troy, my Hofner lapsteel is in C6 tuning, so do I take it that I am able to re tune to the open GBD tuning without any danger of breaking a string.
You would need to change strings to Open G strings

how do you copy this
Great as always, Troy, thanks for sharing ;-) What software do you use for making the diagrams?
I make them from scratch using Adobe Illustrator

Cannot see what you are doing.
Speaking of the Allman's, I would kill for a lesson for "Pony Boy" (written by Dickey Betts) from you. He plays it in open E on the record.
Maybe you could use this lesson and try learning as much of it by ear as you can! It would be a great challenge.
Is that your way of telling me to f-off?
How rude!, I have been playing for 30 yrs and have just got my ear trained to work out songs (yes it takes time, some people are quicker).
But try it!

It is an Open G Triad Tuning (G B D G B D), Not Open G Tuning (D G D G B D) Open G Major (D G B G B D)
Yes sir
