Note: This was our first time hearing an acapella style group! Although we released the Home Free reaction videos earlier, this reaction was done prior. It was a great introduction because it really allowed us to appreciate the Home Free - Man of Constant Sorrow track that much more.
We would like to acknowledge the recommendations from many of you that we have two high quality headphones while reacting. We hear you (pun intended)! We have worked on improving our reactions week-in & week-out. Our channel was essentially only 2.5 months old when this was recorded so please try to keep that in mind! We chose to begin our journey using our current setup for a variety of reasons (recording setup (hardware/software), latency issues, communication during videos, cost of upgrades in software/hardware, etc) but rest assured this has now changed and we will look to continue improving our (and your) experience by making adjustments and listening to the community!

Welcome to the World of PTX, the greatest a cappella group to set foot on a stage. You will soon be deluged with reaction suggestions from their fans (Pentaholics), and each one will be mind-blowing. You might want to check out "Bohemian Rhapsody", 'Run to You", "The Prayer" and "Sound of Silence" for starters. Your usual fine reaction, btw.

@adin very well stated. And I happen to not agree. I see each individual as being more talented and versatile in hf. However, I do agree they are preference and I can absolutely appreciate the talents of both. My entire point was that it is debatable so to state as an absolute one is clearly superior is simply inaccurate. I could easily break down my case but it wasn't my intent. You actually validated my point. "It's preference" so debatable. Thanks for playing and be well

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RUclips, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RUclips videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RUclips), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RUclips, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Actually the acapella craze was started by a group called "Straight No chaser". Ironically with a Christmas they're the group that did a very strange version of 12 Days of Christmas, that ends to the tune of Toto's Africa. @@ddraiss (I'm going to show my age here) Think back on how long A Capella music has been around!!! SnC difinitely has a high place, but remember all the Barber Shop groups. 1940's groups like the Mel-Tones The Four Freshmen in the 50's. Manhattan Transfer is another huge contributor. Jerry Lawson was big back in the day. They were even on the first or second season of The Sing Off. Singers Unlimited in the 60's. Glad in the 70's. Take 6 in the 90's or 2000's. Eclipse, now called Eclipse 6 was the group that did the music for the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Utah in the 80's. They're still together producing A Capella music. In fact, go all the way back to Gregorian Chants. A Capella music was THE ORIGINAL TYPE OF MUSIC. Instruments came a long time after the singing. Yes, several groups are key in bringing it back to an acceptable form of music for those of us living today, but there were a lot of groups besides Straight No Chaser who had a hand in that.

"Hallelujah" is a "Christmas" song ONLY in the sense that Pentatonix decided to put it on one of their Christmas albums.
As is generally true with Pentatonix official videos, the audio was recorded in the studio and the video recorded elsewhere. Technically they're lip-synching in the video, except that the reality is that they also sang while making the video, so all movements are authentic and the timing is perfect.
This was recorded in the Mojave Desert just outside of Barstow, California. I'm told that it was a hot August day, with temperatures of over 100° Fahrenheit, but because they wanted to put this on a Christmas album they had to wear winter clothing and pretend it was cold out - makes me sweat just thinking about it.

1st singer - Scott (Baritone) but covers bass when the person takes lead vocal). Scott, Kristen and Mitch knew each other in middle school and high school. 2nd singer - Avi (bass) has since left the group due to family issues. Avi was replaced by Matt (first video he is in is ‘Sound of Silence’). 3rd Kristen - (Soprano) only female; performed with Mitch and Scott in high school. 4th - Mitch (counter tenor) - people often are surprised at how high he can sing; he has a 6 octave range (A1 to B7). Last person - Kevin (beatboxer, tenor and cellist); Kevin and Avi were brought in to round out the group when they competed in the TV show “Sing Off” (which they won). Kevin was discovered online through his own RUclips channel where he beatbox and plays his cello at the same time. Kevin did not sing at first, but with training from Avi, grew more confident in his voice, and started singing tenor. The group has three Grammys - ‘Daft Punk’, ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies’, and ‘Jolene‘ (with Dolly Parton). Their album “Evergreen” was nominated for best album. Just last month they got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Kirsty(the girl...rhymes with thirsty) Scott(The blond), Mitch is the high male vocal and people often get "Mitch slapped" by his vocal abilities. Kevin is the beatboxer and also does harmonies and vocals on occasion) Avi was the original bass member, but left on good terms and was replaced by Matt as bass, but they are both amazingly good. I saw them live for the first time for their Christmas tour in December 2022......UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. I am 64 and a new "Pentaholic" for a while now.

Pentatonix should come with a warning label...addicting!!!! This was the first song I heard by them and it blew me away. THEN I heard Bohemian Rhapsody and well...that did me in...I am a full fledged Pentaholic!!! We call their covers "upgrades" and after a few more reactions you will understand why!! Their originals such as Sing, Love Again, Run To You, Be my Eyes, and Coffee In Bed...just to name a few...are just as amazing. Pentatonix comes with a huge, loyal fan base and will listen to any reaction we can find. Their label can be stingy when it comes to copyright so you may have to use a filter to prevent the video being blocked. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole!! Subscribed for more reactions!!

Welcome to the long winding road of Pentatonix, you are in for the journey of your life 😊 Pentatonix never ceases to amaze me, at just how incredibly talented they are, and take their voices to newer levels, we have never heard before.....there is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 *Not only their voices, but their delivery is also their gift!*

Oh, do we have recommendations! Anything at all that Pentatonix has sung. There ya go, our best efforts. LOL Every time they put out a new song we consider that our new fave, but then we listen to the older ones and revive *those* to our faves. You can't win, everything is good. I particularly love "My Heart With You" just because that song was specifically written for five part harmony and really showcases what au capella is meant to be. And surely you've heard Queen do Bohemian Rhapsody. If not, go listen to it, then listen to Penatonix do a hard rock guitar-heavy piece with no instruments. You'll love it.

Hey guys! Welcome to PTX!! Thanks for reacting to Hallelujah! It is one of my favorites by them.
Next you need to react to DAFT PUNK MEDLEY. You will be so blown away by their talent. They also won a Grammy for this one. It is so good. You forget there are no instruments and they make it so easy to do that.
Not complaining but just making an observation...maybe you should each get your own pair of earbuds. A lot of their music pans from ear to ear and if y'all are sharing you won't hear it. And you must wear headphones 🎧 or earbuds while listening to them. It makes the bass sound much fuller and richer.
Thanks again for your reaction! Awesome job!
    Sending you love from Texas!!!

If you want more songs then the first and foremost you ought to listen to is their rendition of "The Prayer", another very good one is their rendition of "Mary did you know" and they've also made a wonderful 90's medley and a Daft Punk-medley, among a lot of other songs of course.
If you want a tip on another very good artist I can recommend a man called Tommy Johansson, he's done a very impressive rendition of "You raise me up" - One octave higher than usual. He does a lot of covers, releases one every friday. He also has his own powermetal band called Majestica and is the lead guitarist of the Swedish powermetal band Sabaton. Well worth looking up.

There are many an argument whether Pentatonix, Home Free, or Voice Play are the BEST acapella group out there. I say "Yes" they are (note I didn't say which one 😁) Anything they do is great and as far as recommendations: Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone), Imagine. Great reaction and welcome to the "Mitch Slap" (your reaction when the little guy with the high voice that wowed you}.

I enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Thank you. I look forward to more of your Pentatonix reactions. They have hundreds of videos and songs - covers and original songs. Of course "Hallelujah" is not a Christmas song but it is on one of their Christmas albums. They tend to include non-Christmas songs on their Christmas albums because they love the songs. Most of us listen year-round anyway.

3x grammy winners (4x nominated) they have a star on Hollywood's walk of Fame, they have collaborated with the like of Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Derulo and many others. They have multiple regular albums and Christmas albums. They won the Sing-Off but was dropped by there label. They built themselves a massive following through RUclips, now they do world concerts, sing the National anthem at college football championship games, they had a cameo in Pitch perfect 2, they have been in tv shows, they have a televised Christmas special, Kirsten did Broadway (Kinky Boots). I know I missed a bunch of things. Essentially there isn't really anything they can't really do.
