Man it's extremely refreshing seeing an old Bago revived after watching Weston Champlin absolutely mutilate one for no reason! I've noticed a shocking amount of short old motorhomes had the 318 as well. My '73 Titan has one. It's honestly not the worst, but they definitely could've done better, considering even the smaller vans at least had the 360.
Lol, wow, you guys make me feel great about my 72 bought out in CA last year. Stupid doghouse cover kept blowing off on 101, but aside from an ignition coil that blew on the way over to Maine, it's been pretty damn great. Getting it restored in Maryland at the moment. Thanks for the video and the info!
The 318 in my Chrysler Fifth Avenue had me loping along at 60 with my foot to the floor while motorcoaches and dump trucks passed me at breaking speed. I can't imagine what Winnebago was thinking when they thought a 318 could haul a motorhome.
Let’s put this into perspective.. no matter what small block V8 Mopar that is, it’s waaay less ridiculous than 22RE Toyota powered 1 tons, Chinooks, and U-hauls of the ‘80s. Worse yet, they were all automatics.
I had a 84 Toyota pickup with the 22r and a 4-speed. And that truck was slooooow. I still see some of those '80s motorhome dually Toyota's with the 22re's running around Southern California
When the carb started clogging up you should rev it up high and then slam your hand over the top of the carb to use engine vacuum to suck some of the trash out of the carb, works 95% of the time unless the carb is totally full of varnish, if that's the case it needs a carb rebuild or throw a 4bbl intake on it and give it a bit more power, with that heavy motorhome you need all the power you can get.
@@FuelInjectionSucks its easy, look at the driverside of the block above the starter, in big numerals it will say “318” or “360”, unless someone swapped that intake on a 318 or the engine was swapped out thats 360 only parts.... but it doesnt matter since its junk anyways lol
I had to get parts for an "industrial 318". Off the shelf 318 or 360 parts didn't fit. I'll check the numbers when I'm around it again to solve the mystery.
PRO TIP, radiator leak like that, mix up some JB-Kwik, attach a vaccum cleaner to the rad cap if you can, drown the leak in jb-kwik, give it 5 minutes, shut off the vacuum. let it set for 20 and your good to go again. I'd go as far as to say this is a permenant temporary fix, ive done it enough with junk.
i have a friend that has the same one for years its mint and everyone loves it , and yaa 318 4bbl duels , he just rebuilt it finally with new rings n alum heads , its just that right size and He says all the power he'd ever need '
Well, this is interesting timing. My friends and I are an engine swap, putting a late model BMW 335-diesel and trans into an old Dodge pickup. I think an honest stock 265 horse/425 torque diesel would do pretty good in that Bread Box. It's a fairly cheap conversion too, you just buy the whole damn BMW from Co-Part.
That carb was crap when it was new. I’ve never gotten more than 12 mpg out of a 360 with that turd on top. More power and mileage with a small-ish 600 cfm or so 4 barrel every time.
As under powered as it is, any the effect of any dragging brakes are gonna be amplified! (Yeah, I know, you're thinking, "Tell me something I don't know!") Sorry for stating the obvious. Fun to watch anyway!
It takes a little while for the pixies to awaken from their slumber, they don't move too good until they're poked a few times. Alotta people don't know that electricity is pretty fast when it wants to be.
So far the only things it seems to need to get to your workshop are brakes and rotors, a muffler on at least one side, a new radiator and some tail light bulbs.
This sounds crazy but put a heaping tablespoon or two of plain old black pepper in that radiator before filling it back up with water. It stops leaks in old brass radiators really well. Not sure where that idea came from but my grandpa swore by it and he was right. I had an old truck when I was a teenager that sprung a leak. I couldn't afford a new radiator, so I tried Grandpa's suggestion. It would last for weeks or months and I'd have to dump a bit more in. I drove that thing like that for years. How I didn't clog up the heater is beyond me, but it never did.
Never add water to a hot engine that is not running. A million cracked engine blocks are in the junk yard to prove that. If running the water moves around and if not it settles in one place and one part hot and one cold then a crack. A can of Bars Leak will fix that size hole. The aluma seal works good for drips and does less clogging of other things.
I bet this was flat to the floor all the way home... Fun times! I know how sketch it is to drive home with bad brakes, both the squarebody trucks I've owned had bad brakes, only difference was the 1974 GMC Sierra went hard right, no matter if you where on the brakes, and worse if you where on the brakes, the '83 C20 went left if you hit the brakes, and slid left if you realy tried to use the brakes.
Could ya imagine it loaded up with all the camping gear and kids toys and bikes and shit? And then dealing with it.... SHUT UP YOU BRATTY KIDS CANT YOU SEE IM TRYING TO DRIVE 😂😂😂
@@MrTheHillfolk Oh I can, my family use to go camping every year for most of the summer, my Dad took my brother and I with a pop up camper towed either behind the '84 Cutlass or '86 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon he had with a custom bicycle rack on top of the pop up camper. I also remember being drown out by a CCR tape most of the time if my brother and I got too rowdy haha!
Does this have the Hydrovac brake system in it ? I have a 61 chevy C-50 with that brake setup . Hard to find parts for it . Split rims or tubeless tires ? Split rims A.K.A Widow makers ... Looking forward to your progress .
Did you remove the distributor and drive gear and pre-oil the engine for a couple of minutes before you tried to start the engine? I'll ask again... Did you remove the distributor and run the oil pump up with a drill to pre-oil it before you started it?
What ever u do with it i am pretty sure u wont regret it once it is done. I picked up a 1987 RV myself. No computers. Just the way i like it. I will build my own computer in it. If u need a new dash or panels just build them your self in polyester
I have a 76 Winnebago brave I think I have the exact same engine too I'm looking to see if anyone knows where the fuel filter is cuz I can't seem to find it
LOL...they didn't put 318's in motorhomes. The carb is a dead giveaway that it's a 360. I know...they all look the same. It's a great engine, hopefully you didn't fry it. Too bad about the "direct-drive" starter. I collect unrebuilt ones so that when the rest all get recycled or sent to China to be rebuilt, I can sell them and retire early. Good video though.

"You're gonna see fireworks during the day in 1 second" this is such a golden response
My son hears outrageous stuff all day when we work on stuff. So funny
I spit out my beer when you said "This things a real piece of shit" 😆
Same here. He sure doesn't mince words. 😂
I still laugh just thinking about it
Having had a Winnebasho of my own, with almost all the same problems, it's good to see someone else going through it, too. :)
“Rough road?! JFC” * *BAM* * -the most relatable Pennsylvania statement I’ve heard in a while
Missed you guys

I drive past this place where you got it and the fence is still taken apart, trash everywhere and the hole in the ground where this sat 🤣
Thats great
Please don't ever take the razor blade off the dash. It really adds a touch of nostalgia.
Quick poll question. How many people didn’t yell “oh my god” when he said he would be driving this thing 30 miles?
Poll #2:
How many people knew it smelled like urine before he mentioned it ?

I want it, including that glorious brown interior (professionally cleaned though!)

Ocean City will soon have a "no customized Winnebago" ordinance.
keep up the good work. all ways fun to watch you guys work. got to love how you guys get engines to run
You two guys...are the best..👍
Have to love the overly optimistic 100 mph speedometer. Lol
It'll do it once
Haven't seen one of those in AGES. I bet there's an old Doobie Brothers 8 track under one of the seats. 😂
That really is a nugget, well done for driving it that far
its a 360 2bbl. the 318 never used that "larger" 2bbl.
Check out the 1976 Winnebago brochure. The only available engines were a 318 and a 440, this is coming directly from Winnebago.

obv as a roadside repair just dump the coolant out the rad and fore-go the vacuum.

They use to make good subs at that gas station when it was Grumpys. i worked at Penn steal and would stop there every day .now its run down.
That’s a 360 based on the carburetor. 318s all had the small BBD. That looks like a Holley 2210/2245

318 was Dodges version of a "Mighty Mouse". The Chevy 327 was given that name for the High RPM power it Produced.
Nice job washing down the cylinders with that Brake clean...
Love this thing, glad your back...

My buddie has a 1977 Brave, and it's much larger than that one, and has a 440.
That's right you are the guys who put the Barra engine in the Granada, I see it in the background, how's it doing?
how many cans or brake clean to the mile?

@@wildman510 I’ve done both. Honestly the pepper seems to last longer and doesn’t stop up the heater core.

I fixed one of those original starters with engine de greaser and it works great
Hell yeah! Motorhome 4.... 318?? 2 barrel?? I'd rather have a magnum at this point, lol
That carb came on 360’s, hopefully that’s what it is rather than a 318!
There's usually a different coach battery from the engine battery
EXCELLENT VIDEO as always!!!
Matte black and white bumpers...i did that on my own RV ir prob will look good on this one too
