  • This summer, during a stop on the Fiona Apple tour, Blake took YT to his home away from home, Mollusk Surf Shop, to showcase the inexact science of writing and playing songs. Enjoy "Curable Disease" and pray that Blake never figures it out completely.

    I can't believe how underrated Blake Mills is. He is one of the best guitar players I've ever heard. Every single thing he does with a guitar is just so precise, elegant and touching... And I won't begin talking about his voice!

    Anyone else wish the album version was a bit more like this one? Don't get me wrong, love the album version too, but the tone of that guitar here is something you can just lose yourself in

    He mentions something profound in here that should ring true with musicians or people who produce and create music--that he's been creating things that don't necessarily turn into songs right away. I've found recently that simply sitting down and creating something--anything--a beat, a riff, a motif... anything musical--on a regular basis keeps the creative juices flowing.
    It would be better to just sit down like this guy does and create, create, create and have a backlog of little pieces of music that could be fleshed out at some later time than to just sit and wait for entire epic songs to just fall from your fingers.

      :-) Yep, i find stuff kinda arranges it's self, and even works it's self out, when i'm not looking, so long as i keep juggling it every day. And over years n years of doing this, every now and then, a
      big one does fall out of the sky, and finished wee masterpieces plop right into my lap. i always feel such a fraud saying i've written them, when i'm more like a pen flourished by some mystery hand.
      Best :-)

    Zach. Try tuning your high E up to F and your B down to B flat. That's the tuning he uses on 'Don't Tell All Our Friends About Me'. It may be the same tuning though I haven't tried it.

    If that is 5-way wiring, like most strat bodies, he probably pulled out the middle and wired to it so he could activate the bridge and neck pickups at the same time.

    Can anyone figure out what tunning he's in? I've heard him say before that his cootercaster is usually in open C#, but I can't figure it out and really want to try to play this song.

    • @Steve564ify

      It's Open E. Just pick up an in-tune guitar and pluck the low or high E during the song.

    Does anyone have/know a lesson about this particular style of playing? Most open chord lessons are mainly blues and rock orientated.
    Haha i feel it would be easier to find a good lesson rather then figuring it all out on my own.

    Does anyone know how he does what looks like some sort of moving harmonic at 3:49? It doesn't look to be just sliding, it seems his hands are hovering. I'm not super knowledgeable on harmonics but its not like any harmonic I've seen anyone else do

    • @coldwarmike
      @coldwarmike 8 лет назад

      ADuckProductions he may be giving his fret hand slightly raised to give it that percussive sound. he's also in open tuning, playing on a slide pickup and uses his volume control to dictate dynamics better than anyone I've ever seen. short answer try fretting closer to the actual wiring and not pressing down all the way. but I could be wrong about his technique because blake is a unique creature when it comes to tone

    • @ADuckProductions
      @ADuckProductions 8 лет назад

      Thanks! What open tuning do you suppose he is in?

    • @coldwarmike
      @coldwarmike 8 лет назад

      ADuckProductions seems like E. he uses c# in alot of other songs

    • @ADuckProductions
      @ADuckProductions 8 лет назад

      Mike Dupree Yeah thats what just thought

    • @Whitewallsessions
      @Whitewallsessions 7 лет назад +2

      Mike Dupree From what I can see he's just using the slide with a volume swell for that lick. His right hand hovers over the strings like that because he's stretching for the volume control with his pinky.

    can someone please tell me what pickups he's using

    • @mikesradguitars
      @mikesradguitars 10 лет назад +4

      The bridge pickup is a 40's lap steel pickup from an Oahu, that pickup is two coils out of phase with each other, Blake's is wired in phase. The neck pickup is a goldfoil off a Guyatone.
