    How do you glaze the undersite of the plate? Just the rim or do you leave it completly raw? And wouldn't this pose problems if you wash it frequently?

    • @PotterytothePeople
      @PotterytothePeople  2 года назад +8

      Great question! I leave the underside raw. If any glaze gets on the bottom, I will wipe it off so the plate doesn't stick to the kiln shelf during firing. This is not a problem as long as the clay is fully vitrified (waterproof).

    Will the same method be applied if the plate has to be made in terracotta? What tips would you give while making a plate in terracotta clay?

    • @cjbird7121
      @cjbird7121 Год назад

      Terracotta just means fired clay. There are many different types of clay. The thing to keep in mind is the strength of the clay, grog does this and can vary in how much the clay contains. Non grog clay is gorgeous to work with but also harder to work with and is more fragile. The methods of working the clay are relatively the same. (water based not oil clay). The less grog clay has, the more refined your piece can be (fine details) the more grog the less refined the detail.

    Beautiful plate! It's frustrating to watch a "how to make at home" video, only to find out (at the very END) that the home in question requires a kiln. A "what you will need" section at the beginning of the video could help people discern if it's appropriate for them 👍

      Is it possible to make a food safe non-porous plate without a kiln of some kind?

    • @marthahunter7096
      @marthahunter7096 2 года назад +4

      I haven't seen any ceramics tutorials online (even the "at home" projects) that don't require a kiln. Bisque firing and then glazing/firing again (with a food safe glaze) in a kiln is the best way to make your pieces food safe! I know this channel has a video on how to rent space in a kiln if you don't have one at home. That way, you can make things at home then bring them to a studio or whatever space you're renting to be fired.

    • @Schnueggl
      @Schnueggl 7 месяцев назад

      It’s not possible to make plates without a kiln, but there are lots of different options to get your piece fired. I give mine to a local craft store, but schools or local pottery studios also offer to fire your pieces because it also helps them get their kiln filled.

    • @MickJenkins1887
      @MickJenkins1887 6 месяцев назад

      There are many potteries that offer the service to out it in their kiln. They usually charge kilogram prices and it’s not that much in general. You should google that option for your area!
