- On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at the rum staple, the Mojito. The Mojito is of course the famed national drink of Cuba and came to prominence there, typically made with Barcardi Rum. It's is a summer favorite, and it’s simple enough to make. These drinks are light, refreshing, delicious, and frankly dangerous because they will sneak up on you. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
It's rumored to have been on of Hemingway's favorite drinks, though he prefered the Mojito as served at La Bodeguita del Medio as opposed to La Floriditia, the bar more closely associated with him. On the wall at La Bodequita Hemingway left this bit of graffiti: "My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita". The Mojito is a summer favorite, and it's simple enough to make. These drinks are light, refreshing, and delicious, careful now.
Mojito Ingredients:
- 1oz or 30 ml Lime Juice
- .5oz or 15 ml Simple Syrup
- 5-7 Fresh Mint Leaves
- 2oz or 60 ml Rum
- Top with Seltzer
-Garnish with Fresh Mint Sprig

The whole, "Film Drunk, Edit Sober" I think applies here.
Damn right
"We'll fix it in the mix."
How To Drink good shit here!
Hemingway approves this message
He definitely had a few drinks before shooting this
You can always tell hahaha
It was the dancing wasn't it.
Probably because he does 10 episodes on the same day haha
the barcardi salesman part lol
Yeah, he's pretty toasted by this one, haha
How many cocktails down is he at this point of filming? I'm guessing many.
Honestly, if memory serves I've had MAYBE three drinks here.
How To Drink I like 3 drink Greg
Not enough... never enough
@@howtodrink
Oh? I have one of those 1/2 gallon beer mugs, too.
@@howtodrink Where do I buy mint?
Greg: as long as the drink you like is in the glass you made it right!
*goes to put sprite in a mojito*
Greg: wait
I stop watching for like two months and return to you in paradise
Interesting. I basically just cut a half a lime into six pieces and muddle them with sugar, then add the mint and gently muddle. Yours seems a much cleaner version, but I like having the lime in the glass, adds a bit more colour and a visual association for the flavour. Truly a classic cocktail, whichever way you do it.
Yeah that's sort of how I was making them and I haven't had them in a long time so I am really going to enjoy tonight
I made a few last week and did a combination of just one lime wedge and half an oz of lime juice
The showmanship! The dynamism! I CANT GET ENOUGH!
So much inspiration to make my own great drinks, thank you for making these videos. love you
I've been waiting for this one
Thank you! I THINK i should have gone with crushed ice to be honest, but that's ok.
@@howtodrink I always love making mine with crushed ice. They're so good on a hot summer day here in GA!
Top 10 Fallout Cocktails - Mojave Mojito
Made some Mojito's tonight using your vids recipe. Man..... was amazing! Even cooked myself up some simple syrup using one of your other videos for these. Honestly, the best mojito I've ever had or made. Love the channel. Thanks for the videos, can't wait to try out more. Cheers from South Africa
Cheers from Dallas ... I have always wanted to go to South Africa ... how far are we away are you from Cape Town ?
Your videos ALWAYS make me smile. In these times, that's a feat. Thank you.
So, these are way better than I expected. Thanks for constant good Ideas!
I Love the soundtrack to these videos, somethin about it just gets me goin
That glinting wink slayed me! Another great video Greg! Thanks!
Had these while on vacation in the Caribbean, honestly one of my absolute favorites it’s delicious
and refreshing and that's why I love it
I love how excited you are by it. Anyone who says they don't like a mojito is lying
I'm so glad to see you do a long awaited cocktail!
Really enjoy your tutorials, they are sincerely helpful, but I enjoy these videos just as much for your joyful and happy attitude. Keep going!!!
Lots of love Peter
You are absolutely a great rum salesman, you're why I love Smith and Cross, and Smith and Cross is the reason I've been skipping the cocktails to drink straight liquor.
Tells me to stop putting sprite in mojitos but also says "if the drink you like is in the glass" 🤔
Gottem
Try it his way and see if you like it better. Then make your decision.
Beautiful drink, beautiful man ;)
Keep up the good work !
An excellent, refreshing drink. I remember driving by the Bacardi distillery as a young kid in PR. I also remember being able to run to the corner store to pick up a pint of the stuff for my Dad. Different times, Good memories.
Man! Drunk Greg is hella fun! 😂😂
I wonder if we could rent him if ever would have having a wedding or a big bash
@@gardensofthegods definitely not now
oh hells yes, favorite sweet drink.....LOVE IT! THANKS!
Another excellent video, and definitely one that needed to be done. 👍
His margarita recipe was fantastic so I’m gonna make this today.
I'm so pumped, this is my wife's favorite cocktail! I know what I'm making this weekend.
So happy I stumbled across these older beach videos!
I love mojitos because they are easy to drink by all methods of making them and now I know more about them! Awesome vid
ALMOST AT A MILLION SUBS GREG! LONG TIME LISTENER FIRST TIME CALLER, KEEP IT UP! THANKS!
Love this show
Toured the distillery in 1991. Worth it. Great tour.
I need to have a drink with this man asap lmao simply amazing
I do enjoy how you you provide some of these very popular drinks in teir base form. I am pretty big on traditional and doing things the original way. Very often, when something becomes popular, it gets twisted and altered heavily. I am really enjoying your channel Gregg!
I've waited for this day forever. I can die happy now
These videos make me want to start drinking again. Watched way to many of them.
Oooh, I love a good mojito. Sole reason I kept any plant life in my apartment. That mint plant was the best-treated living thing in my building.
so lovely drink!
GREEEEEEEEEEEG!!! My saturday morning has been made!!
Literally my favorite drink.
I love it when How To Drink has a few drinks before a shoot.
In Havana they universally use fine Cuban sugar, not simple. Some would say that's an insignificant detail, but I think it actually makes a difference. They use Havana Club 3 Anos, which makes a superior rum highball compared to Bacardi, but of course you can't get it in the US. You are right about muddling... in fact, no Cuban bartenders muddle, they put the sugar in, they put the mint in, they TAP it once or twice with the muddler, then add the lime juice and a splash of sparkling water... stir to dissolve the sugar... then add the rum, ice, garnish, and stir stick. They are super SUPER smooth, never touching anything with their hands-- always tongs. It is a very fine drink, and when I was in Havana I had to make sure I had the authentic method so I had about 500 of them.
I like that you've been doing more tiki and tropical drinks. Do a volcano bowl!

Bob Jones Nice!
Morgan Childs
What kind of ice do they use? In Japan, crushed ice is used.
Havana 3 year isnt really good. I'm finally out of the US and have wanted havana club for years. Especial and 7 yr are money, but 3 yr sucks
a Mojito is definitely in my top three mixed drinks. It's simple to make, refreshing and absolutely delicious.
I used to made it with Bacardi Gold, is a little bit sweeter than the white, and give it a special taste. Try it
This episode was minty, minty, minty fresh.
I love mojitos!
Fresh lime is hard to come by here, but Cuban rum and cane sugar are readily available...and meyer lemons... so we improvise. Still good.
Cheers for the tutorial and an entertaining video as always. 💕
one for the How To Drink archives
Oh man I've been waiting for the HTD Mojito for a long time!
Just made this for my dad (i'm 16 so i can't really have one yet) and he loved it, first cocktail i've ever made. I used Captain Morgan Carribean white rum instead of Bacardi though - although to be fair, i'm in the UK so I could have gotten Cuban rum if it wasn't massively expensive haha
I really like the way your right hand moves between 0:33 and 0:38
I personally prefer shaking, straining into the glass and then topping off. It’s cleaner, I think there is a much stronger mint flavor and you don’t clog your straw with that initial mint.
Lovely!
Ok. I know I gave you a hard time about the Butterbeer, but I wanted to come and tell you that this Mojito was amazing. I think that Mojito's I have had in the past must have had pasteurized crappy lime juice, or mixers, in them. This was SOOOO REFRESHING! Completely delicious. One would think that it would be hard to screw up a Mojito. Clearly, it is. Your Mojito is superb! Thank you.
A friend of mine recently introduced me to this channel, and I have to say I am NOT disappointed
Good!
I love the videos he does "later in the day"
Love the show. It’d be great to see/get your take on a Penicillin!
I've always used about half a lime cut into cubes and plain sugar and muddled that with a couple fresh leaves of mint
this video was brought to you by Day Drinking! i absolutely love it
would love to see your updated take on this drink =]
100% with you on the no-tooth muddler. I want the cell walls broken, not the leaf shredded!
My straw doesn't have a strainer attached.
My muddler has teeth but the handle end is smooth... It gets washed every time it gets used, so I just put that sucker down wrong end topwise and let 'er eat.
Pro tip for those that are in the same boat and have never made one. So simple it's almost too stupid to think of at first.
I don't even think "toothed" meat mallets are proper.
If you want stuff in pieces they make knives.
@@howtodrink yo I think you better patent that idea before somebody else does but make sure you get the trademark otherwise you can be pirated which happened to a boyfriend of mine
You have to be a brave man to make a Mojito video here on RUclips
Ha!
No crushed ice? No Muddled lime? Way too much Seltza?
Yep community is so fucking toxic
@@Unterhosegotti Or filled with facts.
The only fact that matters is that a drink you like is a good drink. Doesn't matter how you make it.
Greg, you should do another outdoor at the water’s edge episode! Cheers dude! Love the channel
someone in this video is hammered
I made this with Malibu because it was all I had on hand. The coconut with lime and mint actually worked quite well
there is this neat trick that the Havana Bar in Lima (Perú) does that is having their mint in little bundles where the stem wraps up the thingy, so when they muddle it stays in shape and the leaves don´t go flying around the drink, and also they put crushed ice on top, all of this so that you don´t need to use a straw, which is pretty awesome
Cheers mate!
I remember seeing this years ago and this is the best way to make it. Other bartender make it wrong or whine about it telling us they don’t have mint lol
The Cuban Bacardi Distillery is still in operation in Santiago de Cuba. It produces rum under the brand Caney. People often think that the Cuban rum brand, Santiago de Cuba is from the Bacardi distillery, it is not. Santiago de Cuba is the old Matusalem distillery. Why these brands exist outside of Cuba, and their distilleries still produce rum under a different brand is a long story, best explored over a Mojito.
Thanks for making a Mojito the way it should be made
Amen to that!
hahahha Greg's feelin it by this one. Now gotta go make mojito
Love the shirt.
Wait so would the Cuba Libre be next?
Love this. Been watching for a couple years and somehow missed this episode. Wish there was some Hawaiian music instead of the the standard 1930's big band jazz. Love you and your show
Thanks for another awesome video! How much of a difference do you think the various mint types have on the drink? I know a lot of recipes mention a specific mint (mojito mint) for the cocktail and that others won't give it the correct flavor. Just curious if this is true or not as I'm not sure any mojito I've had used 'mojito' mint.
I'm in South Florida a good mojito is a must !
Something tells me this isn't the first video shoot of the day... Love it. Haha.
This response is simply for, “minty, minty, minty.” You are adorable
As for being a rum salesman, you are why I’m into Smith & Cross.
I would love to see your take in a Cuba Libre! It's my fav drink of all time especially if you do the sugar and line version of it...oh boy!
Liked the video when the starting ad was playing, Thuglife 😎
Just in time for the hurricane. Hurricane cocktails are best cocktails!
Jesus I hate making this drink 😂😂 Mojito "connoisseurs" are worse than the martini guys!
I use to have making Martini doing busy bar days, but the more i Work the more I like it.. dunno it's fun, but tedious af
connoisseur perhaps?
connaisseur (yes I'm french)
Sorry father for I have sinned and used the incorrect spelling. I'll correct for you two
Is there lime juice in this mojito? THEN WHY CANT I TASTE ANY!?! ....OH WAIT, NEVERMIND! IT WAS HIDDEN BEHIND THE MINT! -Thad Castle
Love your videos, I don't even drink cocktails lol
It's minty-minty-minty good. Channelling a little Larry David.
Try a couple dashes of that thick coconut milk that comes from a can in there..... blow your mind!
Looking good Greg
So, I made this with coconut rum because it was all I had....and....you should really try it.
Good that's what I bought the bacardi and I'm going to be making them for my neighbors in a couple minutes . YUM
I do enjoy a good mojito, been recently making mine with a coconut simple syrup for that extra island taste.
Nice touch!
After I tried coconut simple syrup, I couldn't go back to normal simple syrup for my mojitos.
How do you make it??
2oz of white rum, 1oz of coconut simple syrup, 1oz of fresh lemon juice, 8 leaves of mint. Give the mint a slap or two and put all ingredients in the shaker. Shake with ice for 10 seconds. Strain in a frozen collins glass with lots of ice. Top with tonic or seltzer and garnish with one or two mint leaves. Perfection.
Mozart Russomano:
I think he's asking how to make the coconut simple syrup.
Mojito's are the greatest of all time!
Love your channel! I like my mojito a bit closer to a a caipirinha. So I muddle mint and one lime cut into 8th’s with a tsp of Demerara sugar (I tear the lime). Add 1/2 oz of fresh mint syrup, 2 oz Plantation 3 Star and 1 oz of Plantation XO, top off with club soda (3 oz) and enjoy.
The go to drink of Sam Axe.
The Australian guy said soda water, and you finally revealed the answer. I did the research and wasn't sure if he was talking about seltzer. Anyways, I tried this and it kind of ruined the drink by making it watery. So I don't put this ingredient and substitute it with a lot of ice. When the ice melts, it turns into water and makes a great combination.
Ooh I was the Like that punched it from 4.9k Likes to 5k Likes, That felt good!
It's not often that a person can say they truly made a difference.
I rewinded your Bacardi dance about 4 times 😂!
my favorite summer cocktail even grow mint for it.
Question about a past video, the Paloma. I couldn’t find Luxardo Bitter Bianco. What do you recommend as a good substitute?
Mojitos are my favorite
I love Mojito’s
