Best Mojito Recipe - Cuban Mojito

- We went in search of the best mojito in the world and we found it. You are not going to find a mojito like this at a bar. It takes too long to make. However, we found a place that takes the time to make it right, and we will share the recipe with you in this video.
I met up with my long-time travel friend Freddie and we went to Havana Cuba and hit all the popular spots like La Bodeguita Del Medio where Ernest Hemingway was rumored to have discovered the Mojito. We were disappointed. Many places in Havana made a good mojito but it wasn’t until we discovered a little place at the end of a peninsula in the bay in Cienfuegos, that we discovered the secret to making a great mojito. If you don't think this is the best mojito recipe in the world, please let us know your mojito recipe in the comments below.
We hope this video helps you make an amazing mojito and if you visit Cuba, make sure to stop by Punta Gorda, Cienfuegos and tell them Jim and Freddie sent you.
I don't know why but that is so fascinating. Thank you for the cool Video! Going to try this for sure.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm sure you will like the mojito.

Probably cause he hella swizzled the mint.
just did. It is pretty WUNDERBAR! greetings from germany :D
I live in Miami Iam a mojito drinker most of the bars here uses simple syrup which is equal amount of sugar and water I personally like the syrup because it dissolves better and they use fresh limes instead of half water/lime juice and they top it off with a splash of Club soda, this receipts is used in all cruises lines and the famous Gloria Estefan’s restaurants. Thanks for the video

- so, how much the rum?
- dont care, fill the glass
Hahaha
Im literally dying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Zhivago: It looked like about a 2 oz pour to me. The 1 oz comment in the vid is way off - no righteous rum drink would ever use such a small amount of alcohol. Especially in a sweet drink like a mojito.
Todo trago es por 1 oz de alchol

*WROTE IT DOWN FOR FUTURE REFERENCE:*
1. Completely fill your glass up with mint.
2. Add two (bar)spoon scoops of (cane) sugar
3. Stir for two minutes gently to release the oils from the mint.
4. Add +/- 90 ml (3 ounce) of a mixture made from 50% lime juice & 50% water.
5. Stir once more (gently) until the sugar is dissolved
6. Fill glass up with ice-cubes
7. Add white rum +/- 60 - 90 ml (2 - 3 ounces)
8. Stir to mix, garnish & serve with a smile.
i made it with 1,5 spoon of demerara brown sugar, its not enough 2, its sourly , so 2 or 2 maybe 2 1/4 xD, i use plantation 3 stars rum and lemon instead of lime, cant find lime here, but i have homegrown mojito mint xD
*brown sugar for mojito and half of lemon
Thank you very much, this is an excellent rundown.
@@gulinborstiI’ve found Demerara doesn’t dissolve well without heat, could explain being sour
would that be 45 ml lime juice and 45 ml water for the mixture ?
I’m a bartender in one of the best hotel in Florida Keys. I don’t agree with the way that he makes mojitos but I have to say that I tasted his mojitos like 4years ago and It was amazing. He works in Cienfuegos, Cuba. I remember him. Nice to see him in RUclips!
I'm glad you had a chance to try his mojito. I think the biggest problem, professionally, with the way he makes it is the time it takes. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

The lemon/water mix how did you make it?
@@olivergonzales2975 With lemon and water?
@@BlankestKnight i use instead lemon water mix,..the lime cordial of rose's or desmond.
Great recipe,.i got a homebar for myself and it is realy important to stir the sugar and mint,..minimum 1,5 minutes.
I see a lot of complaints about our friendly narrator talking over the bartender, but literally everything said was relevant to what the bar tender was doing. Either he was providing further clarification about what he was doing, or making comparisons to how he had seen other people conventionally do it in the past. I think he did a great job.
Samson Barratt, Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
This comment restores my faith in humanity 😂❤
Exactly what I was thinking !!!!!!
I did two limes, 2 tsp plain white sugar, 5 sprigs of mint (not leaves, the whole sprig,) ice, 3oz rum.
Follow along with dude!!!! And considered a stirring spoon, I had issues with even a small standard teaspoon.
Dump in mint, sugar (just like the video)
1/4 cup lime juice and 1/4 cup water mix
Crushed ice
stir some more (I also did a shake variation, after mixing the sugar and mint, tasted very similar)
This was damn good. I'll have to try with soda water next, but this is very good!!!
1/4 cup lime juice and 1/4 cup water mix
***5/19/22 update, soda water sucked, just stick to this, and keep it simple. If making a pitched I mix mint and sugar by hand, much easier and let it rest an hour before mixing in liquids.***
I’ve tried both simply syrup and sugar. This is in my opinion the better method. More rustic and how I imagine the original drink was made. After trying several methods, I 100% agree that it’s best not muddle the mint. Takes a bit longer to get the menthol to release with sugar, but like most good things, time is worth the effort.
Don’t completely pulverize the mint, but give enough soft muddle to release the mint’s aroma
In the past, I have made mint syrup for my mojito's, looking forward to trying this recipe!
That bartender's a machine! The way he stirs that sugar, you can tell he did that for a good 17 years! Cool experience
For him it took two minutes. I am fairly new bartender and it would probably take me 10 minutes to stir
@@melvinbackbreaker6808 use a drilling machine with a spoon would suffice 🤣👍

looks yummy. I love the time this guy puts into this drink. Everyone at the bar watched him the entire time, because so much care was put into it. Sure, you can use simple syrup, muddle some limes and mint together to cut the time down, but the quality does go down when you are focused on getting drink tickets out of the way. The people that are out there vacationing aren't in any hurry. They are there to enjoy paradise and I would imagine love the fact that this guy takes his time to make them their very special mojito.
So perfectly said.
I recently discovered mojitos in living in Mexico. I love them. I would gladly wait twice as long as he took to make the drink if it was half as good as he made it sound. Good things go to those who wait.
It's as good
Screw all the other videos about muddling. This guy knows how to make em.
Imagine the whole resort wanting a mojito, you might get your drink in 5 hours lol
@K P the asshole above doesn't understand that he's making it this slow to teach how to make the drink, this is not how fast he does it on his own.
Carlos is a lush
VonSpiegel. No, the bartender says he stirs mint and sugar for 2 minutes and then stirs the drink for 1 more minute to dissolve the sugar. Add the other steps and that's at least a 3 minute and 20 second cocktail... That's way to long for one drink. That's like 150 mojitos for an 8 hour shift with no breaks to talk to customers, ring in orders, take money and give change, wash glasses, or doing anything but stirring and pouring.

That's why bartenders hate when ppl order these types of drinks.

Now I finally know what to do with all that mint growing in my "veggie garden" !!!
I had those mint growing last year. I used them to make a lot of mojitos. I didn't buy mint all summer.
Its the only reason I grow mint.
I have seen the mint "mashed" (muddled) but this method of using granular sugar looks good. I figure the granular sugar acts as an abrasive on the mint. This bartender has great technique. I like the way he uses tweezers to handle things going into the drink.
Made these last summer following this guy and my mojitos were incredible! Now that the world is on fire and I’m locked in the house I came back here to get a taste of summer at home! This bartender is great!
Esto es en Cienfuegos Cuba 🇨🇺 mi ciudad cienfuegos 😍😍😍😍 cuanta nostalgia
I made it at home except that I added some lime wedges and muddled them into the sugar and mint and added about 1/4 cup club soda over lime wedges. Turned out delicious! Thanks for this recipe!
Sounds great!
So you didn't make this at all?

This looks heavenly! I had the best Mojitos at Havana 1957 in Miami a couple years back (they use sugar cane sticks as straws), and I've been hooked ever since. I'm gonna make my first one with this method when summer starts, the first one with real sugar, and try the others with granulated stevia for less calories.

Always satisfying to see a master at work. Nice drink.
Thank you! Cheers!
"In the US when we try to make mojitos we use a sirup".
Rest of the world: why? 🤣
Syrup dissolves faster into water. US is about speed over quality.
@@CheeseBae It's the same thing. It's called simple syrup. Chemically and taste wise, there is no difference if you stir it as much as him. The only difference is if you mix less and you get sugar crunch. I'm not American BTW.
Justin: What hole have you stuck your head up? The US is in a renaissance of craft made from scratch drinks started over 15 years ago on the east and then west coast thanks to bars like Death & Company, Smuggler’s Cove etc... Now every medium to large city across the continent has 100’s of great bars.
blackbirdbeatle: Not completely true. He uses granulated sugar because it acts as an abrasive agent against the leaves to gently express the spearmint/wintergreen oils. Just adding simple syrup does not have this physical ability. (You are right in drinks that don’t use granulated sugar as an abrasive it is the same as simple sugar once fully dissolved).
The whole point here is to add sugar to the mint first, the sugar by osmosis will extract the essence of the mint, the water and lime will dissolve the concoction, the alcohol will enhance the flavor.
Really like this ways
Eddie Sailo, Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
I made this recipe and GAHDAMN it was delicious!! Here's the recipe I used.
12 mint leaves
2 sugar cubes
Half a lime fully squeezed
Add these ingredients into a highball glass and then stir until the sugar cubes are thoroughly dissolved in the lime juice. By this time you should be getting a really nice scent of that mint coming off the glass.
Next fill the highball glass with 3/4 of crushed ice, then stir rapidly again with your bar spoon until the glass is super cold in your hands. Then add in the rum leaving an inch of space to the top and mix again the rum and contents with your bar spoon (5 swirls) and then top off with more crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lime.

tomattomli, Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your experience.
I'm no expert but some mojito specific commentary: Muddling the mint releases a bitter flavor. Mint is delicate and doesn't need more than a slap to release the fragrance. The spoon thing he did was overkill much less muddling. I do muddle my lime to release oils from the skin as well as the juice from the fruit. I also add my rum (Spanish white) before adding my ice or club soda. I'm sure it's delicious though!
