This video explores what you need to know when buying a chicken coop. Matt visits Melissa in Santa Rosa, California, who recently had an 8’ x 24’ Carolina Coop installed on her property. Melissa discusses why her previous coop didn’t work out after a year’s time for her 14 chickens.

Love how this company is all about educating chicken owners. Like he says in the end, “If you’re not gonna buy my coop I’m gonna teach you how to make your own.” I contacted this company last year to see how much it would cost for them to alter an older shed I already had on the property. They were totally upfront with the fact that it would probably cost more than just buying one of their coops which I appreciated their honesty, basically their labor costs would be higher on a custom job like that which is understandable. I ended up adapting my shed into a coop myself with the help of a family member who was savvy with building, buying some materials off of Carolina Coops. They were totally helpful and a great resource. My coop ended up awesome and chickens are really happy. I still buy hemp off of Carolina Coops because the quality is excellent and it works like a charm, after a year still zero smell. If I ever move to a new property, I would, no questions asked, buy a coop off this company. Just wonderful customer service, down to earth people and the quality of their stuff is top notch.

I do not even understand how to “compost” using horse/cow manure because of not knowing how to do that. Especially when she is talking about ten-year old manure. I have not even gotten to Florida yet.
I thought compost was for gardens. I need to learn to do that for a garden, first. But the compost I see on RUclips is way too wet for what you are doing. Do you know about classes for this? Can I join the 4-H as an adult, or follow someone around watching?

I just moved to a new house and will be getting a coop specifically so I can take in special needs and “retirement” hens. I don’t care if they don’t lay anymore. I just want to give them a good life and save them from a soup pot.

I like the idea. But birds get ate. Might as well have productive animals. Were all gonna die someday. It isn't good for the environment to use feed on unproductive animals.

I learned about the Grandpa's feeder about two years ago. I finally broke down and purchased one a year ago... #noregrets IT'S AMAZING! The inner grate prevents them from beaking the food out, no mess, no waste and no rodents! I purchased the larger. It feeds all 17 of my girls and I only have to fill it every 1-1.5 weeks. Talk about your lazy chicken keeper! That feeder along with my Carolina coop...those girls raise themselves and I just watch! lol!! Keep up the amazing work guys!

I love your coops! We just got our first chickens (I had some in 4-H when I was younger though). I wish we could afford your coops, they are amazing (and wish you were closer to Iowa)! I love the drop down egg hutch and deep litter method with easy cleaning! My dad and I are coming up with the plan for our coop, we have 9 chicks, about 3 weeks old. I love your ideas! A coop like this is my dream "forever-coop" for my ladies. They are out of my price range at the moment, nor, do I need a chicken coop right now as the one I have for my ladies work fine. But I fell in love with your coops and runs, and am obsessed with them, especially the Carolina coop.

We are new to having chickens on our farm and built a coop and run over the last few weeks and the chicks came last week. They will not use the run for several weeks yet since they are in the shop in their brooder area.
I wish we had found Carolina Coops before we built our coop and run. Great information and explanation of why you build them the way you do. We had fun with our build but when it comes time for added space we will purchase a Carolina Coop.

Hello from New Zealand I just wanted to say I love your chicken coop designs they are so practical and well thought out. We can't get anything like this in NZ. I would purchase one from you but the freight cost is likely to be a killer so I will have to try and find someone who can build one for me following your ideas. I might import one of your nest boxes though to assemble here, I think I could manage that myself. I love the rope wrapped roosting poles too what a brilliant idea. I too have a handicapped chicken and one if those would be ideal for her. If you sold the plans fir your coops I'm sure people would buy them around the world.

One thing you could add one the egg hutches is a chain for when you open them up. Then you can put down whatever you are collecting whatever you are gathering the eggs in while you are collecting the eggs (like on Lumnah Acres).

Out in west Texas we use hog panels and cattle panels on top sides plus chicken wire to keep animals out and hog panels on bottom
Wild hogs will push it around but not over yet
Top is 1/2 rebar and one inch chicken wire with cattle panels for support

Thanks for the walkthrough of this beautiful and well designed coop! Such a great point about the nesting box lid. I just built by own coop and all the videos online show people making the top lid open. But I just realized when building that it was pretty high up (its also elevated coop) to reach in there even for me and my wife (and we are both pretty tall), and since we have kids, we want them to be able to get eggs sometimes without needing something to stand on. So I made the lid on the side as in this video. Then I saw one video where someone (Becky from Beckys Homestead) made the point of chickens getting stressed out if you open the top lid, which makes sense, and that made me even more convinced I was right about my design choice. Glad to hear that professionals such as yourself are reinforcing what I thought would be a good design!

Beautiful. I however only have 1 chicken. I acquired it when I went to my local gas station and it decided to hide on my rear axle between my wheel and gas tank. The 3 cops that where there and myself couldn't find a suitable way to get the poor terrified thing out. She would escape to under the gas tank which apparently has a lil nook that is chicken sized. They offered to call a tow truck but, my spouse said no you aren't going to ruin this Lexus SC430 doing that :(
So....I drove home (5 blocks) doing 3 to 5 mph. I've never gone so slow in my life. Then we took the wheel off and got her out. Poor thing was a mess emotionally but, suffered no injury :0. She had been stranded for a week at that gas station they said. She is super happy now being my miniature horse Star's bestie. She shocked us both when she started laying eggs right when the world went into lock down. I hear this is not the usual way of getting into backyard chickens LOL. Now I kinda want one that lays blue eggs. Strange how quickly one can get obsessed with egg collection.

She ended up going broody so we bought her 4 chicks & put them under her. It took her all of 30 seconds to accept them. Now they are around 5 months old. Chicken math is exponential. Lol
We love our Grandpa's feeder. Only one concern: My daughter is in a 4H program and acquired a Silkie & a Polish chicks. Our hens are very healthy girls with some weight. I am slightly concerned their weight may not be heavy enough to open it since they are much smaller.
that is a valid concern. On their website they address small chickens and bantams. They state that on their standard feeders, a bantam can open it, but on the large feeder, so lighter birds may not weigh enough to open them, but it can be adjusted with the use of a small weight on the tread plate.
For hot regions like southern Arizona, what about putting in a cross fan for no/low breeze days? Would you suggest small fans inserted in window pane or larger quiet in the gabels?

So if you let your chicken free range do you need a run? I'm in the process of starting a backyard flock for our homestead but this is probably the one thing I'm not sure of. Also I just love how proud you are of your work. I was consideri g purchasing a shed from Lowes/Home depot but the amount that would be spent on that I think I may just reallocate to purchasing from you. Im in CA so I know it'll be an investment but it definitely seems worth the cost.

We recommend bring in some soil/compost mix for inside the run if you can. You really want to create as much of a natural setting for chickens as possible. They want to find bugs and forage in the dirt.

What do I need to do for you to prepare a loose cinder block base to raise the wood base off the ground a few inches? Can I just set and level 4x6 on top of the bare cinder blocks or do I need to fill them etc?
Wow! That is such a cool coop! Very attractive! I'd love to make something like that to add on to my current coop. I have 23 chickens now and about to a straight run of get 30 more. This coop seems like it easily houses 14. What is it's capacity?
Hi Matthew, with 3 roost bars at 8 foot each gives you 24 feet total. So 24 birds is our recommendation at maximum, but some people will say 8-10 inches per bird on the roost bar so you could get more in there, but 53 would be too much.

Will guinea hens help to protect when I do let my hens out to free range? I only have a 1/4 acre of land for them to range, so I was planning to let the out daily. We do live near a river and park, so we have seen snakes.
It will reduce feed cost if you can move your chickens around using a quality tractor coop and run. It can be effectively done.

Protective edging on metal nesting box roof to prevent possible cuts to hands and face.
You bet it will, could badly injury if NOT kill your chickens. Contact your local 4-H
Notice the ly, a couple of coops ago ,the old guy with the bread told the other people that paid way to make that chickens didn't like the lift lid on egg bins
How do you prep the ground base for coop and run site?
I got my predator wire installed per your videos! Big relief too! I’m lost on the run floor tho. I have 4 hens in a raised 4x4 coop with a 10’ft run plus under coop and solid metal roof. I keep getting a muddy floor tho higher than surrounding dirt level. We’ve had a lot of rain. I was wondering if sand would improve it?? It’s staying too wet !
We don't recommend sand in the run, just try putting in leaf mulch, woodchips (usually free from tree services). If you have a solid roof run that isn't leaking, it should keep your run dry. You can also add pine shavings to help absorb some water after a lot of rain. Good luck

I only have 4 girls and 2 new chicks about to be introduced. My run doesn’t leak but rain blows in. We are planning on extending the new run by the end of summer bc it’s only 4’ wide. I think the rain splatter adds to it.

This was an informative video, and it's a beautiful coop, but the price of that coop is probably beyond the means of a lot of people to afford - especially someone just dabbling their toe into the world of raising chickens. I'm sure you get what you pay for though. It's a spectacular coop!

I love this and wish I had seen it before I got mine. One thing I would add is carabiner clips on th nest box and outside coop door as raccoons will figure out how to pull those pins out.
We always suggest carabiner clips on all the latches around the coop for that reason. Thanks for the comment Robin.
Question, I have a lot if cop friends that will be wanting my eggs. And the hemp lotions and things with hemp in it show up in testing. Your thoughts?
We can go into a long speech about how hemp is different than pot, or that industrial hemp bedding is not processed or is the same thing as the oils that is used in CBD oils, etc, but the main point is that chickens aren't eating the hemp bedding. Just like they don't each pine shavings, so the eggs are perfectly fine. Thanks for your comments
Those steps at the top could work a lot better if there was a small landing that was connected just below the bottom of their opening.
How much would a coop of that size coast to buy ?
What are your thoughts on egg drop nest boxes so the eggs automatically drop away from the chickens into a separate compartment? And can you build those into the coops?
Hi Shannon. We haven't found a real reason to do so with our nest boxes. The way we build them and the rest of our coops is to make it easier for people to put them together. Plus our egg hutches have dividers in there for broody hens or big birds. We find if you need the eggs to roll away because they are getting dirty or eaten then that is a symptom of a bigger problem. Such as too many hens in a small place. Can we do it for a custom job? Sure we can. But we find we never really need to . Thanks for watching.

Beautiful chickens... I’ve got Americana’s and barred rocks.... my barred rocks are my bully’s to my americanas, but they are also my sweet babies. They pull feathers all them time. Now even the feather plucker is getting and naked bottom. Lord help me, cause I can’t seem to get it to stop!!!!
Eat the Barred Rocks. I had them once. Never again. Jersey Giants, French Copper Marans and Brahmas get along with Ameraucanas. Those are the breeds I have.
My Barreds used to pick on my Ameraucanas and Buff Orpingtons. My rooster was an Ameraucana and did intervene sometimes. But Mr. Whiskers usually was not always quick to stop the bullying. He did kill snakes though.

I can't stand Carolina Coop design, but I love their runs.
The worst thing is that the perches are all above the nests, so they poop all outside of the nest boxes, so the chickens walk in the poop to get into the nests... Making the eggs poopy! So many other things that make their design suck lol, but their runs are so awesome!
Hi Cheryl. Our roost bars are not above our nest boxes. If you look at the design, our egg hutches bump out and the interior entrance to the nest boxes are flush with the exterior wall.
If you are talking about our deep litter beds, to explain the concept of the deep litter method and the benefits of our hemp bedding would take a while, and we have lots of videos about it.
We perfected our designs over a decade of building coops and raising chickens. We understand that by just looking at our coops, you don't like the design. However, chickens can get poop on their feet in so many places and bring it into the nest boxes. More importantly, our customers have never complained about our design. Thanks for watching.
