    Matt and Kristen (and the gang) are live in Franklinton, NC at the home of our customer Jimmy. It's been over two years since Jimmy got his 6'x18' American Coop and he is finally cleaning it out.
    Matt and Kristen show how easy it is to clean out one of our coops, with the drop down clean out gate and the 12" deep litter beds that is lined with food safe high density polyethelene.
    After about 15 minutes, the coop is cleaned out, and we leave some of the litter in there to kick start the new hemp we put in. After two years and 9 chickens, there is no smell from the deep litter bed.
    Then the question of what to do with all that good chicken poop. If you are going to use it in the garden, do you wait or use it right away. Till or no till. We explain the benefits of the no till method of gardening for a more healthy ecosystem for your plants.
    And we answer your questions live.

    You can also use grass clippings into the run and especially if the clippings has clover in it is a bonus because chickens loves clover!

    Roost bars…I have 36’ of roost bars for about 24 chickens. When I collect eggs after dark I find all of them squeezed into the same corner. While I agree with the one foot rule, someone should tell the chickens. 😂

    Good show. You mentioned people with egg allergies. I was one of those people. I developed it at about 14 and lived with it for 3 decades. I loved eggs, particularly runny eggs, either fried or poached, but would often end up with crippling stomach pains.
    A few years back, ma incubator hatched a pet duck (out of a shop bought carton, as food) and she started laying. I risked trying a soft egg again from her and had no problems at all. What also happened after that was my chicken egg allergy had gone, so chicken eggs are back on the menu for me now. I've never tried quail eggs, but they sound interesting.
    I hope that might help someone else out. Maybe not someone born with the allergy, but who knows.

      Thank you for sharing that. We have heard that many people with chicken egg allergies can eat duck eggs. We're glad you are back to enjoying your runny eggs!

    Silkies are sweethearts. Mine lay little eggs every day. They come when called and are just the nicest birds. I also have a Mottled Cochin, a Green Queen, and a Steele Egger, all Bantams. Chicken poop is not exciting, but I use the deep litter method -- haven't cleaned it since mid-April 2022. Chickens are so easy. I made an automatic waterer and automatic feeders. My babies have been in the coop since they're 3 weeks old I put a brooder plate in there. The run needs to be at least 6' tall and the coop has to have plenty of ventilation. I read somewhere that you need 1 square foot of ventilation per bird at a minimum. The bantams need 2 SF minimum in the coop plus 1' of perch, regular sized chickens need 4SF in the coop plus 1' of perch. You should have a minimum of 10SF of run space per chicken, but the more there is, the better.

    Chickens sometimes jump off the roost, step in a fresh poop and get back up. We’ve had chickens since 2009 and the roost bars do get poop on them. That’s just fact

    That stuff is a amazing mulch for your beds. I don't think it will be to hot for the plants since when you take it out you are mixing it anyhow so the crust is mixed in the whole volume and therefore delute the nitrogen down.

    Would you guys throw any scratch in the deep litter to encourage the hens to scratch / mix the deep litter?

    We just finished our coop awaiting our chicks from McMurray Hatchery in April. How many bags of deep liter do we start with? And when is it safe at what age do we move the chicks to the hen house being that I live in Los Angeles, CA?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  2 года назад +1

      You want 4-6 inches of litter to start, so for a 4'x6' henhouse, we start with one 44lb bag of hemp. The rule of thumb for baby chicks is when they are fully feathered, usually at around 5 weeks. Or you can (weather permitting) use your henhouse as a brooder.

    I have a question about the predator apron; will it stop smaller predators such as Stoats &weasels? My mum says they'll probably still dig under it. Sadly they are protected in my country and they love to kill for sport, more troublesome than foxes are for sure.

    I might have missed it in this video and the others, but what is that plasticy white material used in the deep bedding?

      Hi Jonathan, we use food safe high density polyethene in our coops in the henhouse. that's what you're seeing there. It's like a cutting board but for your coop. Thanks for watching.

    Ugh! I'm with Kristen, just ready to rake the $h*t out of the house.
    Question 1: if you turn the bedding every now and then will that extend the life of the bedding further?
    Question 2: When will you be stocking back the bedding?

    • @CarolinaCoopsVideos
      @CarolinaCoopsVideos  Год назад +1

      To answer your first question, it depends. Figuring out how long your hemp will last depends on how many chickens you have for the size of the henhouse. Turning it is good because the stuff on the bottom is usually all composted and looks fresh. So it may help or it may just feel like it helps.
      As for your second question, we were expecting the shipment to come in on Feb. 17, but were informed that bad weather in the North was affecting the delivery. It will be here soon. You can also pre-order it. Thanks for watching.

    We have a 6’x12’ hen house (12x36 coop) with between 20-30 chickens over the last two years. Purchased 3 bales of hemp from CC and used 1 1/2 bales as a base and sprinkled a very thin layer on top every 2 months or so. In two years I’ve used about 2 1/4 bales total. Also, never turned anything. Seems like everything is great so far. No bad smells. Trying to decide if I should clean it out this year or let it go another year or two or three.
