Scott have you ever used any Blendzall gold label fuel additive? Most people have never heard of it but I buy it by the gallon and love it.
505 crf fuel treatment is not available that I can find ....
Before OBD, there was SHD, Scotty’s Head Diagnostics. Best diagnostic system ever.
🤣
minds you, that SHD is compatible with modern day tech.

Well you just seen this one, 30 plus years old.

Several attempts by professional mechanics, all of them unable to fix this problem; Scotty fixes it with fuel cleaner and
a 'quarter-turn' adjustment, with what looks like, a key. Staggering level of knowledge, displayed, here!!
Allen head screw 3 mm to be exact
Old school Scotty fixing an old school car... You really know your stuff!
Great video 👍

Love seeing the older cars and learning about mechanical fuel injection, thank you scotty 😊
Great video as usual- learned something new, glad Scotty is around to show stuff like this about cars even if I never end up working on this type of injection system it's interesting stuff
Got to love old CIS fuel system. Mechanical fuel injectors are a monster! Ethanol gas is hell on these engines! Been there done that. Scotty... Your adjustment with the 3mm Allen does work in some cases. However, If the cold start injector is bad it can cause an awful lot of problems on first starts and even after the engine is warm. Leaking mechanical fuel injectors too. They can make it so rich the engine won't even start. So much that you can pull the dip stick and smell the gas in the oil. Loved watching the video.
Funny you mention old iron. My shop called me over an old 60's vintage 455 Olds engine they couldn't get to run. The distributor vacuum advance blew it's bellows so the timing wouldn't advance. They didn't even know what a mechanical vacuum advance even was and thought it skipped time. Swapped out the part and it fixed it right up, a cheap fix. Someone who owned an old 442 was very happy. LOL
You can't believe what that fuel cleaner did, I can't believe I STILL can't order the CRF cleaners, even after 5 months of waiting.

Common tools for a typical old car tuneup consisted of screwdrivers to adjust the carborator, sparkplug gap tool, feeler gauge, points file, timing light, dwell metter and the sparkplug socket, extention and ratchet.
As always Scotty, great job on repairing old school and letting us know sometimes it's simple knowledge, not fancy screens. I do a little youtubing and it's harder than you might think to pull off video production. 🙂🤠
I've got one of these ('93 Merc, 170K miles) as well and it is indeed a tank. I just wish I enjoyed working on it because it costs an arm and both legs to get it fixed when something does go bad.
scotty- this video makes me happy yet sad. i own a 1987 190d 2.5turbo and i just keep it in the garage. it purrs like a kitten and i very very torquey. As you said, the number of people who can still work on them is dwindling. I too am getting too old to be crawling under it now. Getting old kinda sucks.
Wow, what a difference. I bet the owner was happy and pleased to hand over a few bucks for your wisdom.
I own a 1995 A124 (Mercedes E320 convertible) only 2nd owner. The 124 series was one of the best Mercedes ever made. My only issue was the ignition wiring harness that shorted due the stupid idea of doing biodegradable harnesses. It is fixed with a new upgraded wiring harness that I plugged in myself. Since, my A124 run perfectly! Amazing machine!!
I love old Mercedes like that. They were made to last decades, not weeks like the new ones.
thats so true

I went to the site with intentions of buying a couple bottles to try but you have to get the set of oil and gas treatment..okay, I thought I'd get two sets. Then I saw it's 129.00 plus shipping. Guess I'll stick with what I can get at the parts store. I know everything is overpriced but dang...
I agree, l can almost buy new fuel injectors for that price.
Yeap they got reallllyyyy expensive. Not worth it at that price.

Amazing Scotty just amazing! Thanks for your videos....
I remember in the olden days when we had carburators with automatic chokes. You could loosen a few screws and adjust it. Tighten it up and there you go.
Love your wisdom. I'm excited to learn from you.
I ran dozers for a power company. We got a used D9N in 93’. No power, hardly climb the ramp up to top of coalpile. Changed all the fluids n filters, still nothing. I removed the fuel filter and filled it with ATF and ran it. Poured a qt. through air intake with engine at hi idle. Did the fuel filter refill 2 more times. Ran like a new tractor. ATF does a great job of cleaning up the problem.
Carl
Usually those adjustment screws have a manufacturer setting, and after that they can be adjusted a little one way or another. I like the Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner it seems to work great.

That was super smooth
There's a lot to be said for old school mechanics like you Scotty! They are worth their weight in GOLD! My Dad has been an auto mechanic his whole life. He's a little older than you Scotty. But I tell ya, that man can diagnose and fix almost ANY mechanical problem and make the necessary repairs for the cost of the parts. He's old school. He diagnoses by his senses, smell, sight, sound, etc. Many of the new mechanics (not all, but a LOT) would be LOST without their diagnostic scan tool. Now, to be fair, most modern cars absolutely have to be diagnosed with a diagnostic scan tool due to the vast amount of electronics and computers on board. But many problems can still be diagnosed the old school way. Most new mechanics would say "Oh, I don't know how to do that" or "They never taught me how to do that in mechanics school!". Thanks for being an honest tester. Happy Holidays sir!
Back in the day when our cars had carburetors on a really cold day sometimes we would just spray some starter fluid in there and it would fire up. Occasionally we had to do it twice. To clean them you just needed an old toothbrush and some Gumout. Do that three or four times a year and you really didn't have many problems with it starting or running rough.
I just kept wondering what the neighbors think every time he is out in the yard ranting. Love it!
Thank you.
Scotty your amazing and know your stuff thanks because I got one of these old things and trying to see what additives to use
On older cars, I use to make fuel adjustments by hooking a vacuum gauge up and adjust to highest vacuum at an idle, then again about 2500 rpm, then balance the difference,
Thanks Scotty!
I got to get some ATS fuel injection cleaner.
I had a 1988 300E 4dr. Sedan. When I gave it away I had over 300,000 miles on it. It was an excellent running car. The a/c didn’t work, I bought a newer car to make it through the St. Louis summers.
You rock, Scotty!
Those K-Jetroniks have a dedicated injector for cold start. It probably does not work properly as well. Enriching the mixture while the engine is cold is also a responsibility of additional system which needs a check-up.
It is also unusual the entire system went lean. They normally go rich and you regulate them back to lean side. Anyway, long life to that w124 and it’s owner. :)
I wish car companies were making wagons. I had three, a Chevy and two Fords. They were/are more practical for most people than SUVs. Plus they are less likely to roll over. I could haul my boat stuff, actually a 14-foot hunting skiff, around in my old '59 Chevy. It stuck out two feet passed the tailgate.
If you cannot find 505 CRF, try Chevron's Techron. I always found it to smooth out my rough idle problems.
Man this guys great. Interesting and informational videos at the same time. I’m a RUclipsr too, and believe me, that’s hard to pull off.

Helloooo Scotty thank you for your information and knowledge! Wishing you a great day!
Good show or podcast? Whatever, right?
Anyway, ya nailed it with the metering box. Likely a Bosch system as many from Damlier Benz spanned out those years. The t handle is a magic wrench. I had to constantly use mine for an airbox tune in the Sierra's one year on my Saab 900t. That thing went fast (150+) on I5. I think the statute of limitations have run out?
Have a good one.
That 505 CRF is an awesome product... I could feel the improvement as I drove moments after pouring it in the tank of my 2002 V8 Tundra earlier this year.
I’ve been trying to find the product for months. No luck. Website is always out of stock from day one. I messaged them and nothing. I live in Connecticut, help 😢. It’s getting cold and I want to try it on my car.

There is a few companies that will ultrasonic clean your injectors(off the engine) They flow test and match the set impedance. And assemble with new seals, 0-Rings. Maybe good if you have a set of expensive custom injectors.

I love the old mercedes with the m103 engines (I have 3 one has been my daily for 10 years.) I have rebuilt a couple of the bosh jetrinc distributors didn't think it was that bad.
I'm more of a Berrymans B-12 guy. The fuel distributor usually only needs to rebuilt when it leaks (will idle Rich and if adjusted to the leak it will run lean above idle ). I always adjust working CIS to highest vacuum at idle with the OVP relay pulled. If you have to touch the EHA or Flow Meter potentiometer things get more complicated.
That is a beautiful old wagon.
Old Mercedes are infamous for plugged up outlet screens in the fuel tank. It's a replaceable part but you have to drain the tank.
Looked at the msds of the fuel treatment its "trade secret" I hope it has PEA and other detergents. Scotty, can you clarify about 505 crf
How do you use the 3mm wrench on a 2001 Toyota Corolla? I used the 505 fuel treatment but I wonder if I also adjust the fuel injector if that would help my vehicle?
Thank you so glad you do videos it’s helped me a lot to keep my vehicle going!

What would be the proper way to "accurately" set that fuel injection system? What kind of devices would be used to meter the fuel and where would they be connected?
we had to rebuild fuel pump for FIat 132 1974 1600 just by changing couple parts and voila. things were so much easier to fix

The cis fuel injection was a good system. They don’t like vacuum leaks though.
Sure would be great to know where this was purchased from. Been looking online and the only place that pops up in a search is the dealer at $300 a case. The rest appear to be knock offs
I had a old pathfinder. Had similar problem. Turned out to be the temperature sensor. The car thought it was 40 below. Was fluding the fuel system. Changed the sensor and problem was solved.
One test I used before to figure out rich or lean is putting a piece of tape across the edge of the throttle body

Hey Scotty.... I am in NJ. My wife's Mazda 2003 MVP has been checked by four mechanics and no-one has been able to fix the check engine light. Every one of them tells a different story.... Catalytic problem, Electrical problem, etc. In the winter the car starts roughly but in summer it has no issues. (I assume has to do with humidity and motor cold temperature). How can I get you to take a look at it?
Great video Scotty, I‘m still driving my 1974 VW Superbug the I purchased in 1982. The problem is that I’m now too old and unwell to work on it myself and finding a mechanic here in Sydney Australia that knows what to do and understands how to tune twin carbs is rare. I’m down to the last workshop that I can trust. Vintage Vee Dub Supplies is almost the last man standing in town. Every other garage with young people are clueless when it comes to basic mechanical repairs on older cars. The don’t know how to repair, only how to replace parts with new. Panel beaters are the same, replacing panels rather than repairing. Thanks for he informative and intersecting videos - I really enjoy your common sense and practical skills and knowledge.
