The sounds of my childhood in the 80s. Either NYC's 98.7 KISS FM or 107.5 WBLS was bopping this or some random dude playing this on his Beat Box while us kids played in the park( swings, monkey bars, kickball, red light green light, etc...) without a care in the world. This song brings back so many memories. Can't stop playing it! 💕💕💕💕
I love this song since 1986..Wow!! didnt even know that she passed on... May the angels from the heavens above watch over her forever and ever.. RIP...
Who did the version of the manhattans 'shining star'? These were the best days of R&B in the clubs and only people of a certain age still appreciate it 😍
It was produced by Philadelphia-based Nick Martinelli, who was producing two other successful UK based acts Loose Ends and Five Star at the time. The biggest hit from the album was "Tell Me (How it Feels)" which, in the winter of 1985, reached No. 8 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also reached No. 14 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart and No. 54 on the UK Singles Chart.

I beg to differ. The was the groudbreaking, pinnacle period also. The 70's gave way to the 80's. Class of 83 High school. i know for a fact cause I was there!
1985. Takes me way back to a warm summer evening around 10pm with light rain. Warm enough that me and my friend took a walk down a quiet street in the rain smoking a joint together when we were like 20 years old which was when this track came out. One of those sleepy Quiet Storm tracks.
I was 20 then too what an era I saw many jazz funk groups in the 80s at Hammersmith odeon and the dominion theatre it’s a shame I didn’t see 52nd street blues and soul was my go to mag 😅
I remember listening to this joint back in 1986 when I was in the MARINES stationed over in Japan. I used to love going to the clubs just to hear this song. Then, I got this cassette and CD. I had me a car over in Japan. I remember driving around the Island listening to this groove. The joint is intoxicating and mesmerizing at the same time. I have this CD ON REPEAT IN MY JEEP. Can’t get enough of this song. Beautiful Melody. I wish it would last 4 ever.

No seriously I feel like older music the artist where some bad MFers u had to sing dance and play a instrument all at the same time and not miss a beat you have to be very talented to manage that.
I totally agree that the eighties were golden but there is a lot of modern/current music that is great but none of it is well known or popular. It's underground and won't be found on the radio or mainstream platforms like spotify. To my ears, nowadays you've got to dig for gold which I reckon is more fun! Of course, all of this depends on personal taste and mine certainly might not be yours, ha ha! 🙂
There will never again be a period of music that we experienced such as this. The genius, preparation, vocals, passion, etc. . . Today's music is rushed and comes no where near in its quality or imagination.
I remember seeing Diane hanging around with a bunch of college pals in a cafeteria at Abraham Moss College Manchester, back in 1982. She was a big curvy and gorgeous looking girl, I didnt know she was a singer until this record came out in 1983 but didnt surprise me, there was something oddly magnetic about her, even just in passing, much more than just good looks. I couldnt believe her breadth of musical experience from 52nd St Jazz-Funk to House, Goldies Drum nBass and Mobys ambient sound in the early 2000s. I caught sight of her 20 years on, just blending in with travellers at London Euston train station ticket office. A now famous entertainer waiting in line, no airs or graces just humble and totally grounded. I recognised those highly regarded qualities and I still didnt even know her to talk to! I was really shocked and saddened when I heard of her death in 2015, just 6 weeks after my sister, a 90s hard core junglist/DnB fan died in her early 40s from bronchial illness. A part of my being died along with those 2 precious souls that autumn. I will always remember Diane as one of the most under the radar, and underrated of all of Manchesters greatest ambassadors. Her spell binding contributions, and spectacular legacy in dance music lives on, RIP Diane Charlemagne 1964-2015.

Unfortunately it is to mention, that this elegant genre is brought in discredit by the generation which is behind the 'cyber bullying' campaign across the modern internet (ofcourse talking about the same generation which invented the 'meme') with the self-invented 'Vaporwave' and 'Future Funk'.. More like re-inventing the wheel without knowing the origin if you ask me..
No problem at all with Vaporwave and Future funk. It's apples to oranges. Through one genre I discovered fantastic things from the other, and vice versa. So yeah, all in all, I have to thank vaporwave for introducing me to lots of hidden gems in post-80s disco funk that would've remained unbeknownst to me otherwise. In short: stop hating, people. And just enjoy the music, and let others enjoy it too.
Old school "perfect vocal harmony" way before auto-tune existed...like so many use these days. Simple lock in hook drum beat, keyboard melody hooks, great in the pocket sax solo/counter part, solid simple lock in bass track. Great lyrics. Stellar mix and production for 1985. What more can a listener want from such a cool timeless classic from 52 Street.
Gave me goose bumps n chilles right now thinking about the 80's and first time hearing this in my brothers Monte! Song will alwways be a jam in my playlist!
This sound is unique, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis popularized using the 808 drum machine with the synth bass but Nick Martinelli made it happen too with that street funk style.
Martinelli produced loose ends too. Remember they sounded like SOS Band. Jimmy and Terry openly disliked them, which was and still out of character for them. This 52nd song was the club sound in the early 80's. Lot of UK artist made their marks. Jus Sayin'

It's with the greatest sorrow and regret that I have to announce that we lost Diane Charlemagne today. She fought long and hard in her quest to beat cancer but the music industry has now lost an innovative singer songwriting star. 52nd Street has now tragically lost 2 iconic lead vocalists including Beverley McDonald. I've been informed that feelings in the industry with Diane's musician and global music business colleagues; from all walks of life and musical genres is one of utter shock, sorrow and sadness. Tony Henry, Tony Bowry, John Dennison and other ex-52nd Street & Cool Down Zone members would like to thank all the kind posts and comments on all web sites regarding Diane as a wonderful singer, songwriter, performer, person and friend. She once said in an interview in the 80s that Billie Holliday was her greatest inspiration. That's going to be some jam session up there with those two... Thank you for the memories Diane Charlemagne........
+Estelle Cecil Thank you for informing us. I must say that her music blessed us with lots of happy memories. As teenagers growing up in Harare my friends and I had 52nd Street - Tell me on rewind! May she rest in peace.

Not to worry...everybody that heard this when it first "crossed the Atlantic" to arrive in NYC, knows about the UK's contribution to the 80s...completely independent of what TL & JJ were doing :-) Stephen Laurence Harvey (Steve Harvey, Total Contrast, etc.), Quick Organization (Colin Campsie, The Girl Can't Help It).
Listening to this now brings so many emotions. But more so now learning of the passing of Diane. Probably the best time of my adult life. Thank you 52nd street for bringing such joy.
I remember Dianne very well and her sister Paula. We grew up together on Gretney Walk. They were older than myself and my sister. We would sit together in the communal park area. Our mothers would often hang out in our homes. They were both graceful, really pretty, modest, kind and warm. Our neighbourhood was alive with talent. Marcel King of "Sweet sensation" "Sad sweet dreamer" lived next door to us. Our block literally rocked, people didn't watch TV much. We had a garage that was set up with amplifiers and musical equipment ready to rock. The talent of Dianne was next level. Loved her.

@MsRiff4U Hey, I use to do the same thing when, I was stationed in Colorado Springs at FT. Carson from Jan 1981 to Dec., 1982. The only R&B sound was from the Pikes Peak Community College radio station KEPC. Daily, they had an 3 hour R&B block called "The Soul Show" (I know; corny)that I would tape from. Better than nothing, huh; especially since I'm from and live in Detroit.
MsRiff4U The same for me. I use to listen to this on KEPC from Pikes Peak Community Collage. What were the call sign letters on the station you listened to?

Keep it on the real!
Didn't expect to see this comment lol. I was just here jamming to this song and u brought up one of the Bay greats. Put me to the Test is classic and yeah, Keep it on the Real
High sidinggg!
F*CK YEAH take me back to the post-disco, post-Chic "sophisti-funk" era: SOS Band, Loose Ends, Change, Kleer, 52nd Street, BB & Q Band, etc etc....
Tarantulisimo great choice , best music
And just enjoy the music, and let others enjoy it too.
all 80s music is synthpop, electro, new wave, house, post-disco and soft rock
what s good by kleeer
This and “Sugar Free” by Juicy was truly the laid back chill souls of the 80’s! Miss those times!
Ain’t that just THE slickest synthesiser burbling away in the background?! What a beautifully balanced track 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The bells also...

Nick Martinelli FTW.

This makes me long to somehow go back and revisit the 80's. I want to experience it again.
You
A classic for all times. There was nothing like hearing this song in the 80's. Such a great summer jam. CLASSIC!
Love these smooth beats
I remember when i was stationed in Germany in the 80s this song was my favorite so glad I have found it.
This amazing jam just cheered me up tonight!! My heart is in the 80s!! Missing it so much! xoxo
What a groove. Nick martinelli you genius.
Gave me goose bumps n chilles right now thinking about the 80's and first time hearing this in my brothers Monte! Song will alwways be a jam in my playlist!
This the lick right here if you ain't down with this you ain't down at all baby.
Yeah that's the 80s sound I was in my 30s then Wow where did all the years go but I'm thankful 🙏 to still be here 😊
Amen to that🙏 I'm still here to🙏🙏❤️
Yeah Man...66 years and still Funkin'....
A classic Martinelli mid tempo jam. This was the sound of the late 80s!!! The UK artists took over R&B !!! Love this song!
The sound of the mid 80s actually 😉
@@andreschmelter-bi1hqactually early 80's.
Mid 80s definitely. Late 80s was Teddy Riley and LaFace.
Big up all 80s soul crew. This is BIG!
This sound is unique, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis popularized using the 808 drum machine with the synth bass but Nick Martinelli made it happen too with that street funk style.
So true!
Martinelli produced loose ends too. Remember they sounded like SOS Band. Jimmy and Terry openly disliked them, which was and still out of character for them.
This 52nd song was the club sound in the early 80's. Lot of UK artist made their marks.
Jus Sayin'
I remember this joint from way back in the day. I haven't heard it in decades. This is a timeless gem.
This is one of the finest old school tunes. Long, melodic, good vocal and tasty. Thanks.
Everything a growing boy needs.
I remember when this joint broke. Jamming to it still, after all these years. Today's generation has no idea of how much great music we had.

Estelle Cecil im so sorry R.I.P.
alex belai I just read the other comments but after reading this while this record played made me nearly breakdown so so sorry. .rest in peace.. you will surely return..
😢 I didn't know that. I'm sorry for the loss of those wonderful singers.

Johnnie Banks very much so

Definitely agree J

One of the best club tunes of the 80's
Now here Diss. This is a Manchester UK tune and this is one of the best soul jams ever created
This is a NY JAM! Brooklyn Bridge at night riding into Manhattan! Most awesome city skyline known to man!
For sure!

Get da funk outta ere
@@bourgeoisbrats Agreed, but Nick Martinelli nicked the 808 sound from JJ&TL, but the song is original.
Listening to this now brings so many emotions. But more so now learning of the passing of Diane. Probably the best time of my adult life. Thank you 52nd street for bringing such joy.
More emotions than memories, tho, if that's possible. But I agree with you. . .sounds and feels like such a lifetime or two ago.
They need too make beats like this old school right here man
This is that chill back 80's type of quiet storm vibe.
THE 80Z WILL 4-EVER BE ..... THE BEST OF ALL TIMES....

Old School Classic
I remember Dianne very well and her sister Paula. We grew up together on Gretney Walk. They were older than myself and my sister. We would sit together in the communal park area. Our mothers would often hang out in our homes. They were both graceful, really pretty, modest, kind and warm. Our neighbourhood was alive with talent. Marcel King of "Sweet sensation" "Sad sweet dreamer" lived next door to us. Our block literally rocked, people didn't watch TV much. We had a garage that was set up with amplifiers and musical equipment ready to rock. The talent of Dianne was next level. Loved her.
That drum pattern along with the synth bass is crazyyy, theres no way in hell i dont start dancing randomly when this comes on
I would hear this jam on 98.7 Kiss FM in N.Y.C. back in the 80s . Always puts me in a good mood.

It’s not what you feel, it’s how you feel; it’s a question of perception. This feels sublime

That's that Friday Night tape-off-the-radio tape recorder 1980's R & B groove sound.
@@virgilwyatt4632 hi you can find this same tune free download on mp3 juices.
MsRiff4U The same for me. I use to listen to this on KEPC from Pikes Peak Community Collage. What were the call sign letters on the station you listened to?
100% correct! Lol
magic mike Will do; thanks Double M.
This is a jam. This came out in 1985, I just graduated from high school. I always thought, s.o.s. band did this cut.
You, me, and a LOT other people.
No to me this is not S.O.S. Band sound. I thought it was another big 80's band named Skyy.
Her tone was similar to Mary Davis'.
It’s a clone of S.O.S. and the group Change, all the way down to the same actual Roland drum machine.
I thought they where loose ends They damn show jamming I listen to it erry day
Love this song , never get tired of playing it.
There’s a local station here in Providence, Rhode Island that plays this on Sunday school. Great track from the 80s
I'm still jamming to this 2024!
