And since you said that Ghost Love Score is Nightwish’s signature song and, furthermore, that Nightwish is symphonic metal and their composer is referred to as the Metal Mozart, I decided this is something I HAVE to listen to. I'm not sure the "metal mozart" trope is the best way to go into this particular piece. And I don't think it should be taken too literally as Mozart either. People are simply very appreciative of Tuomas composing in the whole body of work and that was simply a moniker that someone came up with that stuck in the fan base.
Assigning one composer as a moniker to another does a disservice to both.
Calling Tuomas the metal Mozart is like calling Jon Lord the hard rock Gershwin. Sure, there's some Gershwin in there, but there's also some Bach and Prokofiev and any number of other influences which combine to make the genius that is Jon Lord. And the same is true for Tuomas Holopainen.

The nickname is clearly referring to the musical style rather than connection directly to Mozart himself nor the music what was composed at that time.
Nowadays we have genres and sub genres on every other musical style.
This duud called Tuomas is 'just' good to create something for him self, to us the spectators, off the sounds, melodies, voices, words he keeps hearing between the ears.
And the outcome is and always has been this "consept" The Nightwish.
Floor has said many times "I'm not an opera singer". She had 6 years of schooling at Tilburg in music theater, the last year was the opera conservatory. She has applied everything she learned to metal(over what is now an almost 26 year career). The opera descriptor is part of the metal music compulsion to label everything in sub genre's. In addition, Ghost love score was originally written for the bands first singer, Tarja Turunen, who was a trained(many years in conservatory) to be an opera singer, and in fact was singing opera professionally when she helped create Nightwish. She now says that she has been behind the mic for too many years to do stage work(she has stayed with metal since leaving Nightwish in 2006). I think as you continue this interesting journey you will continue to find really interesting bits and pieces of classical music everywhere, and often jumbled styles. Try not to be too judgemental, heavy metal is a conveyence of energy, live stage shows are designed to get you on your feet and moving, and if that's not happening...well, you probably won't succeed as a band. Also these giant music festivals are a place for bands to pull out all the stops effects wise. I've seen Nightwish in a much smaller venue and that is a completely different experience. One more thing, as is often said, if you don't like one NW song, try another, they're all quite unique from each other, and that is exceptional, in popular music terms.

@@kentl7228 I agree with you. BUT. Other reaction videos show reactions, mostly positive and surprises. She spends most of her time comparing heavy metal to classical music and explaining why she doesn’t like it. These should be named ”comparison videos” instead of ”reaction videos”. I get that metal music isn’t for everybody but maybe you shouldn’t listen to music you’re not gonna like.
@@michael.albinus I think you have misunderstood. I believe that Tarja's comment about stage work refers to returning to actual opera where microphones are not used. In other words projecting the voice.
@@kentl7228 yeah, she's only pointing out that what she read in the comments is incorrect, and she's right.
I'm someone who has a background in both classical music (trumpet, various other brass) and rock (guitar, drums, bass). It's interesting to hear you mention waiting for a buildup that never materialized. To my ears, that buildup did come, and it was epic. Trying to place myself in you shoes, going into these listening events with certain expectations can be distracting. People - myself included - often inaccurately describe music. Their descriptions and use of terms might confuse someone with a strong musical background and no exposure to rock. "Opera sound" probably means something vastly different to people with conflicting backgrounds in music. I think that the Broadway/Disney style voice is the closest thing many people experience to real opera. Part of that is probably the fact that these vocalists, unlike other popular singers, often have solid classical foundations (or at least backgrounds full of formal music training). I've witnessed some people acclimate to rock over time who never had any sort of formal music training. Interestingly enough, their listening experience was similar to yours in that the music didn't really move them in the way it would move someone who is well acquainted with this style. I think that will change for you over time. I'd bet on it, actually. The world of rock is vast and full of variety. There are many styles out there where the vocals are secondary to everything else and new listeners often don't understand how they can appreciate music without clean vocals and lyrics that they can clearly understand. There's also some rock out there where the music is secondary to the words being sung or spoken. An example of this might be politically-driven punk rock. That music is (instrumentally) often chaotic and visceral, with the lyric content providing intellectual stimulation and the other sounds evoking raw emotion (almost like a call to action, with the instrumentals grabbing your attention and the words determining what you actually end up doing). I do appreciate you honesty and thoughtfulness while reacting to these songs. It encourages me to reexamine the differences between classical music and modern styles. I still can't put a lot of that into words, but listening to your descriptions of how you are experiencing this music helps me take a step forward in the direction of being able to do so. Apologies for the long comment and thanks for sharing your journey with us.

I'm just barely aware of Nightwish but I know Zeppelin, the Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2 and many other rock and more styles well and any time I've heard Nightwish before in passing it just made me think of slightly louder popsical (as in a mix of pop and classical) mood music.
It doesn't do very much, doesn't really go anywhere and it's a higher octane version of ambient elevator music successfully it appears aimed at filling stadiums.

Music is intensely personal - it either reaches you or it doesnt. Your reaction simply proves that we have an infinite variety in taste- none are right, none are wrong. You say this doesnt reach you emotionally- but it certainly reached the 82,000 fans in the audience for this performance. I am 70 years old - regularly listen to Bach, Mozart, Dvorak - and love most genres of rock - but wont listen to one second of opera - never liked it, it doesnt "reach" me. I became a Nightwish fan a couple years ago, the first time I heard them play.
Im with you...I'm 60, a classic rock person with a very eclectic range of music that I like. I've been to Yanni concerts, yet my favorite band is Led Zeppelin. I found Nightwish & was hooked.

Yeah, I train people to read people for living (one if the reasons I love reaction channels. You see their expression and then they tell you what they are thinking). She was showing the perplexion of someone constantly trying to square a circle and not quite succeeding. I agree with everyone else that she took the "metal Mozart" and "opera" a little too literally and she could not shake that. By her own admission, she's not familiar with a lot of pop/rock music (of various) and the hyperbole that's present there.
Case in point: she said Floor sounded commercial. If she thinks Floor is "commercial" sounding, she has been wonderfully sheltered from some of true horrors of modern pop music...

@@simonelanger6563 From a certain perspective, sure. But it's also very diffent than so much other stuff that is also "commercial". That's why the term "operatic" gets attached to her so often. People who only have experience with pop music dont have any ither terms to describe. That was the point of my comment, highlighting how perspective influences language.

A rock concert, especially Nightwish, is an all-encompassing sensory experience. The light show for the eyes, the smell of pot and body odor for the nose, the sound of the music and audience of course for the ears, the feel of your body moving to the music, hands clapping, the taste of your alcoholic beverage of choice.
The people who said that Nightwish is operatic have never actually been to an opera.
You sound so jaded. I say Nightwish's genre is as close to Operatic music Metal has, without actually having an Opera, and I've not only watched an Opera, but it was a regular style of music in my home growing up. And I follow a channel run by an Opera singer and we got to see her perform. It was awesome.
I good demonstration of what bias can do. Is painfully obvious that her friend's opinion put her in a determined position initially.
Floor is a Soprano. Luckily for us she prefers to do Metal. I am 60 yrs old and have listened to everything out there. I discovered Nightwish 4 yrs ago and can honestly say Nightwish is my favorite band of all time!
Epica is amazing too, but to me there is just something magical about the Nightwish energy!
These classical musicians sometimes remind me on people who escape from some cult and experience something from the free world for the first time 🤔

Exactly! Look at the people who make these comments about Mozart and opera singing when they don't even know anythging about classical music nor do they spend a lot of time listening to Mozart or opera in general. Thank you for popping the Nightwish bubble.
I've spent most of my life as a classical pianist, doing a lot of accompanying (even got a compliment from Galway once! lol), and the occasional solo work. However, a big part of my heart has been and will stay in rock/metal. It's fascinating to see the response from someone who's (I gather) spent their whole life in the full-on concert music arena. From a rock guy's position, I love Nightwish, for their entire body of work is far more interesting to the "serious music" side of me than most metal bands. (That's a general statement for a lot of symphonic metal groups, actually!) But, in a similar place to where you may find yourself, the terms would indeed be quite confusing. Floor is accomplished, and probably one of the best voices in her field, but she's not really a classical vocalist. (To which she freely admits; she's had some extremely good training.) Their original vocalist, Tarja, was clearly more steeped in the traditional operatic tradition. Floor's strength is probably that she can handle multiple styles within a piece, can go for hours with seemingly no faltering, and she can cover both the Tarja operatic style, and Annete's more pop style (Annette was their second vocalist) with equal aplomb and in a way that she always makes her own. Thank you for the review! I enjoyed it and knew what you were saying! Hope you'll continue to expand your listening horizons!
Hell, Floor doesn't even like opera...lol. I don't know where this 'She is an opera singer' bs comes from. She has some classical training and she can do an operatic style of singing but everybody who has ever listened to a real opera singer knows Floor's style has nothing to do with that.

Ah yes when people say he's the metal mozart it doesn't mean hes playing or using actual mozart parts. it probably has to to with hes versatility .

Operatic... She can do opera, classical and what not. But watching Ghost Love Score and expecting Mozart or opera? Never meant to be that. That just gives you the wrong impression and takes away from the performance. It's meant to be a score for a movie.
You are right, and I wish people would stop calling it "Metal Opera" to people that do in fact take that seriously.

Must be frustrating to only understand and grasp one and only that one music-category, like classical.
I myself both play multiple instruments as well as compose/write music/songs.
I can enjoy everything from Pavarotti's live-versions, to Soilwork and with 50 cent, Yngwie Malmsteen or Eminem in between.
My point is that one can miss a whole universe of great music if you only keep to a very narrow path.
The problem is people made some overexaggarated comments about Nightwish which are misleading to newcomers, especially if they know a thing or two about music. The first thing is stating that Floor sings in an "operatic style". She does not. She uses bits and pieces of classical technique but that's all. Nothing operatic about it. Only someone without any experience with opera can really make such statement. The same thing being nicknaming Tuomas "the metal Mozart". He is a composer, yes. His music does appeal to masses. Yes. And there the similarities end. Tuomas is "just" a music composer who inclines to writing metal music for the most part. He's really creative and artistic and his music is often very pleasant to listen to, but his influence (and importance) is nowhere near to what Mozert did to music.
That said, I love Nightwish for what they are - a band crossovering the worlds of classical, folk and metal realms which makes their tunes really open to the wide audience. A band whose music helped me a lot in certain stage of my life, for which I'm forever gratefull.

It was interesting to me that that picked up on the major influence of movie scores and fairytales on this band's songwriting, and the ocean theme (you said "underwater", close enough) even as you expressed a little confusion at it not being what you'd been lead to expect.
As a rock fan I'd suggest you take it with a pinch of salt when one of us describes something as "classical" or "opera". We usually don't really know what we're talking about with classic and opera! That said, the original Nightwish singer did come from an opera background and so the earlier material did sound more like "an opera singer with a metal band". Floor Jansen is a tremendous and highly trained singer but as you rightly observed, this is a contemporary style vocal performance for the most part.
I do so agree it's not opera style. It's classical, muscial, theatrical (Fantastic !). As it's a score it is surely fittable for a movie. Metalmozart is not to be considered mozart, but as mozart was in his time . A composer who did things in another way than the 'standard' or 'it must be like this' in his time. Ow and he is a fan of Disney. I do not agree on your conclusion of not epical , drowned under remarks. Luckely opninions differ, otherwise we all go for the exact same thing and we alll would be listening to the same music (which would be rather boring, wouldn't it? ) .

This performance really was just a mix of Disney and Gladiator. Which kinda sum's up everything else by them I've heard. I had thought gladiator before myself but I'm running with her Disney comparison now too! 😂
Well. I would say, as so many of us did when you announced that you were going to do this piece, that is was NOT the song to steer you towards by Nightwish. No…there’s no “Mozart” in this. People gave Tuomas that nickname because he does write and arrange orchestral pieces, and some of his creations have distinct “movements”…like more classical pieces of music do. Best examples, Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth.
Regarding Floor: No, she’s not opera. But operatic musicals yes…such as Phantom of the Opera. I think to many young people, that’s the closest thing to “opera” that they’ve heard and mistake it for the real deal. Floor does have an outstanding ability to sing in many different genres, in many languages, and is most definitely a gifted performer. Her versatility is what strikes me.
I think the 'Phantom' comparison is close to the mark: not only is her vocal style 'Broadway' (as opposed to Opera) the staging is very 'high-budget Broadway.' Phantom intentionally went in a rock-show direction, both in its bombastic music and in its staging and special effects. Also Phantom moved away from the distinct songs heard in earlier musicals to a more movie-score-style where many songs are quite similar to each other and can be difficult to differentiate.
I appreciate your honesty, I realize everyone has different tastes, & opinions. I enjoy channels like your’s, where the reactor brings a unique perspective to the music.
When someone says "This composer is the Mozart of this style" they don't mean he wrote music similar to Mozart, they mean he is as great to this style as Mozart is considered in the realm of classical music
No, when they say that it's just pointless hyperbole, made by people who don't know any better. Pure cringe.
We all know she's a classical fan, but comparing this to Mozart in order to get her attention is childish. The guy who wrote this isn't even close, he'd tell you the same.
I think that the "metal Mozart" moniker refers more to the "classical" music elements incorporated into the music, i.e. the orchestral accompaniment, than an actual complete compositional comparison. Perhaps even a "what if Mozart wrote metal music?" way to describe the general feeling of the music.

By the way: most of metal heads don't go to concerts to "enjoy the music", we can do that at home just fine. We go to concerts to have a "spiritual" experience. The music is one (major) aspect of it, but not all, at all.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This song was performed in Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

You really poked a hornet's nest with this one and to me that's actually really refreshing.
Most people tend to seek out reactions in order to share their feelings of a particular song with someone else. Thus, the tendency with reactions has become to be overly excited and superficially uncritical, because that makes the viewer feel good. The reality is that Nightwish is indeed a very commercial band but that's also one of the reasons why so many people love them. This is even one of their more progressive songs in terms of song structure, which is why the style changes quite a few times. It also has a few time signature and key changes, while still remaining melodic with a broad appeal. However, in the grand scheme of things it's a really simple song. A lot of the comments I've read have been really emotionally driven and that's understandable. However, they likely watched this video and expected you to be blown away, but if you're coming from a classical background and are actually going to share your honest opinion, chances are that you won't be blown away, just like you didn't. The reason for this is simply that Nightwish is for the most part really simple in terms of harmonic structure. They have a few longer songs, with some interesting movements but otherwise they do sound way more like a disney or movie soundtrack than anything classical. Personally though, I really like movie and disney soundtracks, so to me that's not a bad thing at all.
I think we need to turn away from the idea that reactions cannot be negative or critical. It probably won't happen, because reactions became popular for the exact opposite reason.
Yes, I feel a lot of the reactions and the online community around Nightwish is prone to quite the flight of hyperbole as their standard level of hype in the discussions in that community. I thought there was a lot of thoughtful analysis in this video if you can get past your knee-jerk reaction that a huge band beloved by millions might sound "commercial" or whatever. The comparisons to Mozart that were made are just kind of an unfortunate case of a show biz "uh...dude with classical elements therefore mozart and doesn't Metal Mozart sound catchy" not being really understood ahead of time. I think a classical musician will have a very different take on the "symphonic X" genres than most fans. I like Nightwish a lot, but I think many of the statements people are taking umbrage with are practically just facts and not insults haha
It depends, Elizabeth Zharoff really enjoyed from the first time she listened and I don't think she is faking it or that she doesn't really understand erudite music. I Understand the frustration of fans but also I see some hints of that upper-class-royalty-like-we-are-special that SOME people in the erudite community seems to possess. It's out of touch with the rest of the world and only alienate people if not done right. I'm not a trained musician but Arvo Part doesn't seem to be that complex but is really great. The feel after seem this video is of someone who was able to be isolated her whole life from anything but what the "classical" community accepts. I don't think this is a good thing or make you a great person. It alienates easily someone. I thought of other genres like jazz, maybe Snark Puppy or Tygran Hamasyan but I'm not sure if this channel will work at all. Maybe if she changed it to teach what are the accepted patterns in classical music, what is taken as beautiful and what it isn't, how the community works, how the community see itself in relation with other genres, or challange people to compose pieces given some theme it could work better. But at the same time she is being herself and it should be supported, but if she hasn't to deal with non erudites before it could be something stressful.
@@leliel12th43 Elizabeth Zharoff also has been a vocal coach for pop, musical theatre and opera singers for years, and only came to Nightwish after reacting to many other rock and heavy metal groups, so her ears were way more used to this type of music. The comparision of metal with opera only has a point of coincidence in that, like jazz or flamenco, if you listen to it for the first time without some background on it, you aren't probably gonna "get it".
@@leliel12th43 I think there's a bit of both. I like Nightwish, but you cannot deny that overhyping something before introducing it to people has a tendency of leaving them underwhelmed. Add to that a bit of not being used to the style, and conservatism, and it is a weird combination. To quote what she said by the end of the video "It felt like it was trying to build up to some grand part of the story (...) I expected something, and it didn't happen. She has a powerful voice, but it wasn't giving the Epicness of it (...) I came in with expectations because of the comments(...) and maybe I shouldn't have".
As said by Rafa Requeni just above, Elizabeth has had years to become familiar with various genres, and she is still only starting her journey. Would the "Queen Elizabeth Competition" Elizabeth be as open and as prepared the one of today? I doubt it. As the lady in the vido said, she's going to study the music a bit and come back with a part two. That's the farthest thing from elitism I'd say. She's willing to look at it rather than dismissing it.

I'm from Finland and appreciate the talent of Nightwish/Tuomas, but of course for most reactors it's just easy pickings getting likes and followers&money from their fans pretending to be amazed, just like movie reactors with something like the Hobbit series etc. horrible movies where you know that a positive reaction = money -> so of course overreact positively and take the money rather than the hate from fans for critique

This was funny to watch. You sounded like someone who grew up with Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and listened to Schönberg for the very first time.
Some observations: Metal Mozart was invented by people who don’t know that much about classical music as you - but love alliterations. Maybe Metal Mussorgsky would have fit better. Same with Floor‘s operatic voice. This was called so by people who don’t know the difference between an opera and some Schumann song.
And what you should have known is that this song was written much later than the other ones you‘ve heard. I think your latest one was Metallica and this song came out 16 years later. Rock music was about 40-50 years old at this time so quite a difference.
Looking forward to the part two of the video. I‘ll see if you have learned a bit more about the band.
Frankly, Floor has never claimed to be an opera singer and I don't know of anyone who says she sings in an opera style. Yes she can sing operatic ... even studied briefly ... but no she never claimed that as her style or skill set. But she sure as hell can sing damn near anything. Yeah. Maybe it would be good to point out that the Metal Mozart is more of a wordplay in that it just rhymes well. And of course it's meant to somewhat point out that Tuomas makes quite complex arrangements that use classical elements and real symphonic instruments (played by a philharmonic orchestra).
And Floor had pretty much upped her operatic abilities too, Shoemaker's end has been described as quite good operatic technique.

I get the feeling the "Metal Mozart" line more just refers to Toumas's unmatched skill as a composer than anything. Mozart is generally considered the greatest classical composer of all time, while Toumas Holopanin is often stated to be the greatest metal composer of all time. But they're very different in terms of styling - if anything, the closest classical composer to Holopanin would be either John Williams or Thomas Bergersen, both of which have a very intense, grandiose and bombastic style. I'd personally say that Holopanin leans more towards Bergersen in that regard.
She was trained in opera, however she's singing for 82,000+ people. No non-mic opera singer can do that.
No full orchestra can do it either. A tiny concert hall, sure, an outside venue filled with tens of thousands of people, not a chance.
@Tim A actually it was 13 of 15. They start the show with fire and pretty much run hard for the whole set. The narrow view point of this review and her failure to understand the context of calling Tuoma the metal Mozart (actually thinking that somehow it would have the same feel and all of Mozart's classical works) was surprising. Your comment that minds need to be opened is spot on, when a reviewer insists on literal meaning instead of understanding that being the "metal Mozart" simply means that Tuomas is head of most all other metal composers ... well we end up with reviews that are stilted.

I love your candor and the fresh perspective. It's cool to see how someone outside my experience may react. I thought all your points and reactions were fair.
It feels as though you came into this from the beginning with a closed mind and went in analyzing rather than listening. I'm not a metal fan but this was one song that blew me away. I didn't go into it thinking it was opera or Mozart or any other preconceived notions though, so that helps with enjoyment when you're not looking for something that isn't there.
I agree. Very unsatisfied. My friend said the song was 'meh', thus the reaction was 'meh'. The reaction was more focused on the Mozart and opera comments and I feel almost everything else was missed or brushed over because, you know, my friend (who is obviously the go to guy for music) said 'meh'.

What she says at the beginning about not being pulled into it because of these long, kind of monotonous melodic lines underneath the vocal line definitely makes sense, especially if you go into it after hearing mainstream metal dweebs talking about how the composer is the "metal Mozart," which is a big oof and kind of cringe moment from the fanbase. There is no sense of direction; it's just this constant plodding, slow thing happening that doesn't want to really go anywhere structurally that will engage the listener emotionally, almost as if the person who wrote it doesn't really understand composition and is shooting above their level by trying to do something outside of pop music's typical verse/chorus formula, but doesn't have any ideas for how to make that work. This is not a problem for all metal -- quite the opposite for plenty of less commercial acts -- but the big name, mainstream bands like this one are going to have this problem, because of the intended target audience and the need to aim for the lowest common denominator. Speaking of Mozart, you can compare this song to any of his flute concertos, for example, and immediately tell the difference in terms of one sort of plodding along, while the other has plenty to engage the listener and keep them interested on multiple levels.
Don't want to be rude, but I've never heard someone be so negative about Nightwish and Floor. Probably because wrong expectations, but already negative in the first 30 seconds of the song. So many vocalist teachers are amazed by her. She even won as the best singer of The Netherlands. And these concerts are not like opera/classic to just be silent and enjoy the music. They are more about enjoying the music, the overal environment, ambiance and being interactive with them.
She has a completely different background. If you, or me, go to a opera concert could be the worst piece ever, or the best, you wouldn't know because you don't know enough about that to have an idea. She has lived and played the classical music for so long she probably has no idea what this kind of music is so she is just talking about what she expected and felt without anything else to compare and have a judgement about "good or bad".

Wow... Just wow... This is so far out of your comfort zone, yet you gave it an honest try. The leather is pritty much mandatory, same as a costume is in an opera. Furthermore, even if it does not sound operatic to you, and truthfully it isn`t, to a metalhead this is getting as close to opera as they will ever get. Still, i did like the refreshing point of view. I say : well done.
Agree and disagree, Believer incorporated an Opera singer in the 90 on 2 albums. Fleshgod Apocalypse tours with an opera singer.

It's "operatic" as in being a work of music (actual meaning of the word opera is work) rather than just a formulaic song. But it's absolutely not opera style.
I'm really struggling to see this as an honest try. I admit, this is the first video I've seen from this channel so I'm not familiar with her usual style of analysis, but she seems to have gotten into this performance with a lot of prejudices. I feel like I'm watching someone who's only ever listened to doom metal react to Chopin with the mindset of "alright I've never listened to this before but I know it probably sucks and I'm going to tell you why".

I think the "honest point of view" is that she doesn't hold back when she thinks something is mediocre or lacking. Sooo sooo many you tube reviewers always give the most praise as possible because they are afraid of hurting people's feelings, in her case, she doesn't.
But it's a tad bit off putting that you know deep inside she's struggling because she seems to only appreciate soft music composition and anything with an energetic rock or metal vibe, is not her thing. But she's trying.
That being said, I really enjoy her reviews, they are honest and she does give credit where it's due. But I do wonder what prompted her to want to do this, maybe some part of her is thrilled by rock/metal and she just hasn't admitted it yet.
Maybe she needs to hear the more difficult to play and fascinating stuff, like that of Yngwie Malmsteen or some of Tool's more complex songs.

I enjoy Nightwish to a degree, but I don’t see them as the pinnacle. A lot of the popular songs they’ve recorded are no better or worse than the sort of composition you’d hear in some high budget film. It’s pleasant to listen to, but it certainly isn’t comparable to the great works of say someone like Salieri. Anyone who steps out of their bubble will hold prejudices. It’s to be expected.
Ghost Love Score first came out when Tarja Turunen was their singer. She's the opera singer ppl were talking about, you just listened to live version with different singer so I am not surprised your expectation weren't met.

@@af4396 Tarja is the Operatic style singer. Floor is that happy medium between Rock and Classical. Operatic isn’t a synonym for “better”. It’s a particular way of singing.
When you tell a classical musician that a singer has Opera background, that sets a VERY specific expectation of sound and technique. Real deal Opera singers are the Olympians of vocalists in terms of technique and training. Floor just isn’t that type of singer.

Interested to see more reactions to symphonic rock/metal. Quite some vocal and musical range variety to be found out there. :)
Classical and modern are very different styles. One of the most impressive concerts I attended was in Hungary: a full, non amplified, orchestra in the park where Beethoven used to live. The other was a concert of Epica with full orchestra and choir. Both mesmerising but in different manners.

A good an honest first reaction. One thing to keep in mind when selecting songs, if you were to always pick the most popular band/song in chat, the RUclips algorithm is going to lock you into a certain audience and narrow your experience. You are currently drawing a large metal audience. So if you were to pick strictly based on polls you will get a limited view of rock music, for which metal is but a part. I would recommend balancing your choices between the most requested, and following the guidance of someone with a broader view of rock. Perhaps your friend fills that roll. Eventually you will develop your own sense of rock music and have a better idea on what you want to focus on, in conjunction with community requests.

It's up to her but there's nothing wrong - IMO - with sticking to some tried and tested rock, like the Rolling Stones, the Who, David Bowie, etc. All from a similar era to Queen, Beatles, and the other bands she first listened to.

I watch a lot of reaction channels and completely agree with this. Reactors unsurprisingly follow what the majority recommends, but this leads down a very narrow (and repetitive) path, and it is sadly true that the mob is not the most discerning of creatures in any sense, least of all musically.

I love Nightwish as much as anyone else, but listening to this alternative view just goes to prove how different ears will hear different sounds, and generate different responses.
I'm just barely aware of Nightwish but I know Zeppelin, the Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2 and many other rock and more styles well and any time I've heard Nightwish before in passing it just made me think of slightly louder popsical (as in a mix of pop and classical) mood music.
It doesn't do very much, doesn't really go anywhere and it's a higher octane version of ambient elevator music successfully it appears aimed at filling stadiums.

Basically, a Hans Zimmer worship with some guitar chugga-chugga over the orchestra. I have to say though, I laughed quite hard at the criticism of the singer in the beginning, because she's actually the best part of this performance... by about a lightyear. If some people find this load of cheese emotionally impactful, it's entirely due to her.

I am a bit disappointed that people knew where your comfort zone is, that you are well versed in such a sound, and still gave you high and inaccurate expectations. I am a very big Nightwish fan and Ghost Love Score is definitely one of my favourites. But at the same time, it's nothing like the expectations people instilled in you. I'm very glad you did give it an honest try despite what you expected, and it does sound like there were parts you enjoyed, even if you came out of it not liking it. Nightwish does have a very large catalog, and if you do choose, you can check out other songs. I believe you might be a bit more open to songs written and performed by their first singer, Tarja. I don't want you to go into it thinking you'll get that Mozart sound you expected, though. I think you nailed it with the Disney feel, and I think you might enjoy it more expecting that. And it's also worth checking out Ghost Love Score performed by Tarja, who the song was written for, with the knowledge you have now about the sound. I'm not sure it'll change your mind, but it's definitely a slightly different experience, and one I feel is worth having.
And if you end up not enjoying any Nightwish song, thank you for giving it a go! The rock/metal scene is vast, and Nightwish is only one band in this diverse scene!

Very very good comment - she gave it a very fair go and it's not her taste (yet) but if she has different expectations she might like it more. Like I love Meat Loaf and I might recommend him to a rock fan by calling him "rock Pavarotti" meaning he's got a more operatic voice, but I wouldn't say that to somebody who's more familiar with Pavarotti than with rock music, that would give them completely the wrong expectations.
I think it would only create more frustration in everyone. She seems to live in a whole different world where only erudite music exist. It won't be a case like of Elizabeth Zharoff, I really can't see she come to like anything that people will suggest. Maybe try t teach about the classical community, what is good, what is bad, what patterns are taken as great, etc. would be better. She would stay in her world were she knows that she likes and would be trying to convey what she sees in it to others.
Its incredible how much more power Tarja has behind her voice. The assessment of Floor being commercial sounding is absolutely correct and makes this song really not work (imo of course)

You seem to have a case of tunnel hearing. You expected something different and when you did not get it, you shut out one of the best live musical performances, ever. Mozart, really?
While i do agree with your statement, i can also see where the lady is comming from. She has lived all her life in classical music, where Mozart is pretty much the unreachable (though in my opinion, J.S. Bach is fitted for this more). Before this reaction, her exposure to anyhing aside from classical/romantic pieces is less than the amount of the fingers you have on one hand.
And then there are people telling her that this band is comparable to Mozart and the vocalist has operatic background. While on the one hand those claims are not wrong (Mozart and Tuomas both changed and shaped their genre of music to what it is today and are both, as a composer, the very standard to which everyone else has to compare. And Floor DOES have training as an opera singer - but she is not an operatic singer. Her love and the majority of her training lies in musical performances, which many of us would refer to as 'classical'. And so on.), they completely flamed expectations that were not and never will be met. I guess she expected something like a Mozart opera with some heavier riffs, at most. What she got was a Nightwish experience, with music composed from a die hard Disney and Zimmermann fan (and that she got completely right, Tuomas' music is very much like movie music on a bombastic level), where every band member contributes to that experience as needed. That's why there was no guitar solo in thy typical way, that basically exists for guitarists to show off, that's why there is no operatic long high note ending by Floor. Because it's not about the vocals, not about the guitar, it's about the music, and at a live performance about the show.
Very interesting reaction! Perhaps also an example of how high expectations can ruin objectivity. What i found particularly interesting was how a classical music specialist that she clearly is did not mention or notice the classical instrument bits at all. Nevertheless this channel should be an interesting ride for Nightwish.

It’s nice to hear different opinions, but I don’t think the reactors taste is ever going to align to this genre. Probably best to stop here. Like if you don’t think the end of GLS is epic, cannot feel the energy buildup, and are not particularly impressed by Floors vocals… there’s no reason to go further. Not everyone has the same tastes this is not a criticism just a observation.

Grew up in Finland and nineties was long time a go.
Their first singer, Tarja is the opera singer. Most of the band's greatest hits were composed for her voice and style.
I definitely recommend to listen their original singer Tarja Turunen. She is background by operetta singer, I think Virgin Rock would like her style more then Flor Janssen
Sure, Tarja is a trained opera singer. But not even her was singing opera in Nightwish.
Floor has an operatic background too though. But yes, a lot of the songs including this one were made specifically with Tarja's voice in mind.

My apologies, dear lady but this was a bit like hearing a mathematician describe a painting - highly skilled and knowledgeable in their field of expertise and applying those tools to a different field without first determining the ways in which the involved parameters are not concordant. I am more than half way through but what I am hearing is very much reminiscent of my own first forays into jazz - as a Blues player I just didn't 'get it' :chuckles:.
The "metal mozart" is just a tip to the "writer" being actually a composer and not si.ply a writer. He does include string brass and choral parts. Mozart just happens to aliterate with metal and stands as a name that non classical listeners will recognize.

OK Virgin Rock, I'm an old guy (61) and I watched your reaction to GLS. I have to say you delivered exactly what I expected when I first saw you sitting in front of that beautiful harp. My initial thought was: "No way this lady is going to be interested in Nightwish. She's giving me the full librarian with a harp look!" But there's certainly nothing wrong with that. That's why the world of music provides limitless variety. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. I like many different types of music (including some classical pieces) and don't care for others. What I don't really understand is why you would make a reaction video to a live performance of GLS? If I knew you personally and knew you had a "wild side" I might suggest Nightwish to you. Short of that, I would shut-up and go work on my short game. In the end....yeah, different strokes....

Some people can appreciate muscial genres they are not familiar with, even if they don't like them, for their pure quality. I seems you are not one of them.
Metal music… It is a very diverse genre.
You may enjoy the progressive sub genres, like neo-classical, symphonic, and operatic. They are closer to the type of music you are accustomed to.
Nightwish falls under this genre.
(You mention the different atmosphere of a metal concert, stick to the end for an interesting story from an orchestra’s point of view, but first a little about some good bands to look into)
A few favorites of mine are the bands, Dream Theater, Symphony X and Nightwish.
Dream Theater, the members are arguably the most talented musicians in rock/metal. Especially as a whole/group. They all met at Berkeley. Their songs can be fairly complex, with several that are over 20 minutes long. Their song Dance of Eternity, has 108 time signature changes in the span of a 6 minute song.
Symphony X, the lead guitarist is classically trained and likes to write songs that mixes in orchestral elements. Their song The Odyssey is based on the epic poem and is divided into several movements, and is about 25 minutes long.
And there are many others.
Even Metallica has songs that are a bit more complex musically than And Justice for All… They have many emotionally charged songs. The song One is an example, it is a very heavily emotional and sad/tragic song. It deals with the human cost of war, and the official music video is extremely emotionally impactful. Not the best choice to watch for music analysis, as there are spoken word sections not present in the album version of the song. They are from a movie, based on a book, that inspired the song. I still get emotional watching that video. It was revolutionary when it was first released, music videos just were not made like that back then.
Metallica once did a concert where they mixed their music with an orchestral accompaniment. I believe it was the San Francisco Orchestra.
The conductor of the orchestra was the one who suggested the mashup, and wrote the orchestra portions if memory serves. I do recall a story he told about how the members of the orchestra felt about it all.
He said that the musicians were all nervous and unsure. The loud and rowdy nature of the crowd was a big change from what they were used to.
But it didn’t take long for the energy of the audience to become infectious in them. They grew excited, some jumping from their seats while playing particularly energetic sections. The prim and proper form they were used to was gone, and they got really into the music. And apparently everyone involved felt the experience was one of the best they have had in their career.
Greetings from New Zealand :) Thankyou for taking the time to watch this piece. A few thoughts.. the word commercial is the farthest thing on Tuomas; mind when he composes music. He is actually quite against it in terms of the length of the pieces acceptable for radio. Tuomas' mastery lies in the whole composition and arrangement of his music. Every piece he writes is complex and multi-layered, and his poetic lines carry an uncommon depth of meaning which can be interpreted in whichever way a person wishes.
Just as classical music has changes in direction within a piece, Tuomas's music also has this. Their musicianship is extremely polished and on point. They are extremely talented individuals, there is no auto-tune, or re-takes here; this is Live.
Floor doesn't have an operatic background, just one year of operatic training as part of her music studies. She has never claimed to be an opera singer, so whoever told you that she was from an operatic background has misinformed you. She does, and can do operatic pieces, but she is a metal girl at heart, this is her passion, and she uses an amazing array of vocal styles to tell the stories that Tuomas writes. She is highly accomplished and works very hard to perfect her voice techniques. How she touches her audience is through expression, just as opera singers do, and she does it superbly well.
There is no music quite like theirs. They play for the music, not their egos, which is why Emppu's guitar solo didn't turn into a shred-fest, and all about him.
I realise this is your first experience with Nightwish, and yes, it would probably have been better to have come into this with no expectations :) I enjoyed your honest experience however, and hope you will move forward with a continued open mind towards Nightwish, and Floor.
Certainly, rock music is at the other end of the music spectrum in terms of sound, style, audience, and many other things, but great craftsmanship can be appreciated even if not a personal listening choice :) My personal tastes are wide ranging, but I have great appreciation for both classical music (which I listened to growing up), and for the other end of the spectrum (rock) :) Classical music requires active listening to fully take in the experience of it, rock music (in this case symphonic metal) embodies an energetic sound that creates a different response. Hope that makes sense :)
I love how you had described it like a film score, because from sources I've seen one of the songwriter's main inspirations *is* movie scores and the music of Hans Zimmer. Several members of the band are also confirmed to be Disney fans - Songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen once did an entire tribute album to Scrooge McDuck and that is not a joke - and his earlier song Fantasmic is loaded with Disney references.
Plus Elvenpath, a song on I think the band's first album, which referenced many fantasy films such as Willow and sampled the animated Lord Of The Rings films by Ralph Bashki. There's a reason the band was formerly known to be involved in Heavy Mithril.
Also, if you have a keyboard, you can control the video with the JKL keys - J rewinds, K pauses and L fast-forwards, but you can also pause with the space bar.
Well, well, this lady is hard to impress! It's very weird to see someone largely unmoved by this performance (which still gets to me near the end, despite having watched it at least 50 times now).
I've never been moved by this piece, always found Nightwish to be overrated, for some people the theatrics are not enough, her singing is not really special and the music does not do anything really interesting either.
But I dont this is bad either, is nice music, dont take this as an attack, I'm not one to dis on anyone tastes, and I like that people enjoy this, is just not for everyone

Dear Amy, I appreciate your openness and sincerity. I think, in many ways you're in the same situation as a person who grew up in - let's say - rural Thailand, and the only kind of food he ever had was traditional Thai food. And suddenly he is exposed to a whole variety of dishes from - let's say Sweden. He doesn't know what to look for, what to appreciate, everything is wildly unfamiliar. He wants to enjoy it, but he doesn't find the sweet-sour-salty-spicy balance that he's used to, he doesn't taste fish sauce in anything, no coconut milk, no lemongrass.... and sometimes the flavors are downright traumatizing (pickled herring!!! ), but most of it is not bad, he just cannot honestly say anything about it. He assumes that these Swedes have their reasons for liking this food, but for the time being he cannot really agree with them He keeps tasting the dishes though in the hope that after some time his taste buds will get the coordinates of these new flavors.
I hope you will do the same: keep tasting things. Some songs you will like, others not so much, and there will be some that will be jarring, ugly and downright repulsive to you. That is OK. Just assume the logical thing: that this kind of music has it's own esthetics, rhetoric, it's own specific language, it's sound palettes, possibilities and restrictions in matters of arrangement, it has it's own epistemology. In other words, just like with classical music, here too there is a complex scientific part, and some of us study it. And those are sometimes wildly different from their classical counterpart, just as wildly in fact as the audience's behavior is different. In fact, the same is true for every single musical universe: I don't think for example that you would have an easier access into traditional Indian music, because that is yet another distinct musical language with it's own specific set of coordinates. So just keep on trying, and don't let some of the rougher soundscapes scare you away. And if you have any questions, we're here to help.

You understood Nightwish perfectly. Their main songwriter Tuomas has stated in interviews that his passion is for Movie soundtracks; He is a big Disney and Hans Zimmer fan, and that he does not listen to Classical Music. He would have approved of your analysis of his song.

I had commented on Amy's reveal video that the comparison to mozart could lead to a let down. Made a joke (and gave kudos) to the loyal fans, and opined that it wasnt for me. A few of us had a very adult conversation about it and we all agreed its going to be interesting how Amy will react. But one guy got triggered, maybe bc i said it wasnt to my tastes. He said u.s. americans are bitter and we think the world revolves around us. Shots fired out of nowhere 😂. Most people can handle/respect other's opinions, but there are a few that can't and ruins everything. I hope these guys dont come after Amy. She's too early in her journey to meet up with these types.

I was the one you made this comment, and it basically was a reaction to a lot of the comments on that video, you just had the bad luck that I commented to you. To be fair the bitterness I mentioned may just be an echo of the bitterness I felt when I discovered that the heroes of my childhood are just normal, sometimes disgusting, people. I was a bit afraid of this reaction, not because of Amy, but because of the comments I expected. And while there are many positive and constructive comments, there are also some of that sort I expected. I Have not seen the second part yet, but if that's the type of community Amy wants to build then that's not my type of community.

The most ridiculous thing that could be said is an appeal to sold albums, you know very well what music is in the top of the charts and ratings, and Nightwish has never been there, although I also adore this group, and an attempt to belittle in style and what you have achieved, respect someone else's sincere opinion.

Music is very personal and seeing the reactions of the audience, this music does connect with them. I am a fan of punk, rock/blues, classical and many other styles. This sounds, to me, like heavy-metal, power- cord music. I had never heard of this band and it was also my first listen. I found it amusing that as you mentioned it sounded like a movie soundtrack. I was thinking the same thing.

Fair. This is a reaction after all. I think your expectations were thrown off by the terms “opera” and “Mozart.” Bear in mind that this genre of music is Heavy Metal, and is in a sub genre called “symphonic metal” due the inclusion of a backing orchestra. The orchestra of choice for Nightwish is the London Symphony Orchestra. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes 98% of the band’s songs, along with the orchestral parts--thus the sobriquet: Metal Mozart. Note: Nightwish does not refer to their music by anything other than Symphonic Metal, Floor does refer to herself as an opera singer (although I’ve heard her sing beautiful arias), and Tuomas does not compare himself to Mozart. These are all fan attributions. If you were to listen to a variety of Metal bands, you would be able hear very quickly the distinctions that make Nightwish somewhat unique in this genre. By the way, Nightwish was playing to an audience of 85,000 at an open air festival. Not even the most accomplished opera singer in the history of singers could have been heard in that back row without amplification. I thought that was the only unfair observation you made about Floor’s singing early in the performance. The implication that “if she were a true opera singer she wouldn’t need amplification” was quite clear. In fairness, I don’t think you were aware of the size of the audience, or nature of the venue.

I knew Nightwish fans would get your expectations way too high. And I'm a huge Nightwish fan (particularly old Nightwish), but I know Tuomas isn't today's Mozart by any stretch of the imagination.
I have the same feeling. I love nightwish, but comparing Tuomas with Mozart is totally wrong. I even think Tuomas could say that he would never put him next to Mozart lol and Floor's voice is nowhere being near operatic voice, that's why she is not trying to replace Tarja's voice, which was the closest from all Nightwish's singers of being one. However, Floor is an amazing vocalist, well-trained with a huge range which makes her super versatile. But I've been waiting for at least one honest reaction video and finally I found it here on this channel.

I loved the sincerity of your reaction and the honesty of your opinions. It gives it an air of authenticity that is very enjoyable as someone who has been interested with metal and rock music for over a decade. Seeing someone with such a different background exploring this space of music makes me feel like someone is visiting my country for the first time with no clue about its customs, traditions and nuances and experiencing it all for the first time.
I can't wait to see where this journey takes you. I'd personally love to see reactions and analysis for Lorna Shore:s songs one day, but perhaps it will be so foreign that it will simply be repulsive noise at the moment. Certainly you brought in some views that were fresh to me.
She would be the first to say that it's not operatic. Also associating the composition with Mozart is absurd. The composition is contemporary, and borrowing a few features from classical. Something most metal does, if perhaps to a lesser extent than Nightwish. Floor started on the path to become an opera singer, and chose not to. It seems as though the descriptions you received were more than a little misleading. I don't compare her to opera singers, because that's not what she does. It would be like comparing an improvisational Jazz guitarist to Hilary Hahn. Apples and oranges. I've been listening to contemporary vocalists for four decades, and Floor's voice is nothing less than exquisite.
Floor was only interested in metal, she joined After Forever at 17, and
after High school attented the Rock Academy, and only after that did a year
of opera/musical training, and that part-time only.(just to develop her voice)
She has said in interviews she doesn't particularly like singing in opera style.

I think the lights and the whole experience makes a show like this more of a Gesamtkunstwerk than just sitting in a chair could provide. It's a full body experience. Definitely overwhelming, but if it was only about audio, you'd miss out on so much

I love your reactions. Don’t be discouraged. There is a rich banquet of exciting, challenging, and emotionally engaging rock and metal out there. You just need to know where to look.
One point to understand is that a rock concert is a visceral, and ideally a trancendental experience. The music is extremely loud and he light show makes it more intense.
I'm intrigued about this reaction, when every other reaction videos out there on the internet love and praises this song. The composing, the connectedness, Floors performance. In her 'starting this channel' video the top commnt does warn her that the comments sections can be unforgiving and she shouldn't take it to heart. That was good advice! This one could be a rough ride, although most of what I see below is fairly respectful, albeit bemused.
I deeply adore beautiful, complex music - the art of music, and let me emphasize, ART! In art, there are no rigid rules, yes there are some algorithms that lead to harmony in a philosophical sense. Art, in my humble opinion, is a boundless, uncategorized force of expression. It can be miraculously beautiful in its simplicity, or profound in just a single sentence.
Many, including highly educated musicians, often tread the narrow path of technicality. Yet, art is not merely a mathematical equation - though it does hold mathematical elements that define beauty and aesthetics. With all due respect for the host of the channel as a professional musician, I sense a certain dogmatic approach in this reaction, even a bit of elitism. While I adore classical music, I also appreciate the simple tunes that spark emotion, making us human - beings of intellect and spirit.
Sometimes, in our quest for technical greatness, we miss the sparks of true magic. To me, Nightwish embodies this spark with their complex ART. Their artistry blends simplicity with complexity, deep lyrics, expression, theatrics, epicness, and most importantly, a harmonious amalgamation that lights the emotional spark, taking us on a magical journey reflective of life itself. Art isn't just about technical complexity; it's about harmonious complexity.
It saddens me a bit to see reactions that veer towards dogmatic views, which any true artist should avoid. And I also notice a somewhat childish, envious fanboy mentality among some Tarja fans. Let's stop the comparisons! Nightwish with Tarja had its own beauty, and Floor brings her own splendor. This isn't a sports game; it's art. We should be grateful that Tuomas expresses his complex and deep emotions through the art of Nightwish. Both Tarja and Floor are fantastic lead singers, but in Nightwish, they sound magical, and that credit goes to the composer!

It would be for fair to classify Floor as a musical theatre voice, combined with contemporary voice. Her range, breath control and stamina are very good! I am NOT offended by your observations!

I Agree with what you are saying, but with the addition that Floor's range of vocal abilities goes quite a bit FURTHER than what an average musical theatre + contemporary voice can do. Floor can all the things that these kinds of singers can do, but I can also show you recordings where Floor goes from extremely deep and forcefull growling in one step to the extreme opposity: a glorious lyrical headvoice sound. And that is not even the beginning of it.

Yes. True classical elements in this song! I have a story about this too. I am 53 and a music nut my entire life. I grew up on 70s FM radio. One year at holiday time I took my bath, settled in for the Grinch (the old time one and it only came on once a year and you either caught it or you didn't.) Watched it. Went to bed! Woke up several hours later in a pile of covers terrified. The song nights in white satin had been playing while I'm sleeping and I started dreaming about the Grinch. The narration in the song melted into the narration on the cartoon and I thought the Grinch was in my house. The orchestra...the Grinch. The poetry...the Grinch. THE GONG!!!!! And I bolted out of bed like I'd been shot.
Ever since then the Moody Blues and the Grinch are inextricably linked together to me. Try it! It's quite a rush. But helps if you have the paranoid bedtime sensibilities of an 8yr old.

I think you'll be fascinated by the music of Yes. A good place to start would be the title track to the album "Close To The Edge."
May I humbly suggest you give "The Hu" a chance, for example with "Wolf Totem" or "Djengis Khan"? That is an unusual combination of musical elements and cultures, plus overtone and undertone singing.
I'd be interested to see that too, as an introduction to music I've never heard.
I'd probably recommend some songs by Hanggai instead, a little less metal and a little more rock and blues. Same fusion, a little more accessible.
That is new to me, thank you. I looked it up, and it is interesting. The "Wolf Totem" video is really fun and enjoyable. A good suggestion. Also, I like the erhu, so the combinations they bring are intriguing. ["Hu" in Mandarin is the two-stringed bowed instrument, which, like violins, are divided up into sizes and registers; the erhu (second hu) is the best known, but the gaohu ("high" or "tall" hu) is quite familiar to us in the West, too.]

This is fascinating. Two very different worlds colliding. The only suggestion I have - don't go into any Nightwish performance with any expectation at all as they do not conform to any convention of any genre and just about every song is unique.

Some outlier songs might not conform.
Across their career there is a lot of movement within those genres.

For what it's worth :
I have been listening to metal and rock since I was 13 yrs old, and raised on a lot of country & western and some oldies just prior to that.
As I got a little older and my musical tastes were expanding and maturing, I opened up to the "progressive" elements being injected into metal, which includes a lot of acoustic and classical influences - particularly with bands like Savatage which led to their "spin-off" sister band, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and of course stuff like Nightwish. The Savatage and TSO stuff really got me looking into more classical stuff, like Beethoven and Mozart and the like.
That all said...
It took more than a few listens of this song for me to warm up to it and have it "grab me". That intro (which many have likened to some epic movie theme a la Pirates Of The Caribbean or viking battle - so, your Disney comparisons were not far off!), it was especially unusual for me.
This reaction/review of not just "symphonic metal" but this song and live performance in particular, I found very INTERESTING and even a bit REFRESHING.
I have watched nearly every reaction video for this song and I have heard them from everyone ranging from young kids to seniors, from rap & mainstream fans to die hard metalheads (like myself), and even music novices to professionally/classically trained musicians and teachers. This is the FIRST reaction/review I have heard where it was NOT just all praise. It was an HONEST and OBJECTIVE string of opinions, which I found very interesting. Some I agreed with, others made me go "Oh wow, I didn't notice/think of that before, but I see/hear it now" (namely the classifications of "commercial sound", "CCM", and especially the "sea shanty"), and even if I did not agree with something, I also did not necessarily disagree with it - probably one of those things I have always considered "open to individual interpretation or taste".
I just found the opinions to be a nice change from the increasingly "cookie cutter" collections of total awe that I have been hearing.

I think it shows that you've never really been outside your classical realm. Experiencing a rock concert live couldn't be more different from a classical concert. You may experience your classical music more pure and individually, but a live rock concert is more a total, visual & together experience in my view. And here you are watching a singer that basically only had 1 year of opera training. If you want an opera approach from Floor, try reacting to her singing "O Mio Babbino Caro". It should be more suited to your 'sitting still' music style.

It's music. It's got maths in the background. She understands it, really understands it to the core. The gimmicks and the commercial elements of it. You on the other hand can learn something from her and add to your knowledge of music and do yourself a favor. If you are lurking around hoping that she's going to convert to a metalhead by looking At these circuses that you are presenting to her, you are in for a serious disappointment my dear. She's a pro music creator.
That's the entire point of the channel. If you're not interested in someone's first foray into the world of rock then what are you doing here? No one owes you anything for your musical preferences. I understand many people just click on reaction channels for their favorite band and have no musical interests beyond that band. What exactly does more Nightwish listening bring to the table for someone who is well versed in classical but lacking in rock?
Suggest something that's more distant from classical, instead of trying to find more classical adjacent songs. That's like suggesting someone try sushi by frying it. They're no longer trying out what sushi is at its core.

It doesn't matter if it got math in the background or if you can make a piece of music that is "perfect", music is art, not a program made by an AI. She may know a lot about music but still doesn't understand why people act like that on a live show, why the light, why the emotions. Even pro music creators and musicians recognize Floor as an amazing singer, so you're telling us that this girl is on an even higher level just because she doesn't understand or like the band? give me a break... doesn't matter how much she understand about the music, if that music doesn't have any emotion or soul is just garbage, it miss totally the point of the art.
I actually had the same thoughts when I attended my first classical/opera events, everyone was there to simply listen.enjoy. Or experience something new or familiar.
At rock concerts or pop concerts, the music is so familiar to most of the people there and ready to engage with the artist and vice versa, that a concert becomes more of an energy exchange between artist and fan, rather than a “sit and listen” event. In this case: the more rambunctious the show, the more the ticket price was worth it😂

Not a word about the London Philharmonic orchestra playing when the band leaves stage for a while? Somehow it feels like you had made up your mind before listening that you would not like the song. Of course all people have different taste and I fully respect your opinion, but somehow I felt it was doomed before it even started. I might be wrong and if so I appologize. I mean, maybe if people hadn't put out insane statements like "Tuomas is the Mozart of metal" expectations would be managed, I love nightwish but can we stop pretending it's anything other than pop metal that has a more fairytale-esque vibe? Musically, it's not super interesting or groundbreaking, it just sounds good but you can't expect a professional classical musician to listen to nightwish and be like "wow, this changes everything"
Standard chord progressions, common time signatures, standard instruments, pop singer. The band is very good, but yall overhyped a "good for a metal band" performance to a woman who spent her whole life around people who spend their life dedicated to music theory and are disappointed when she's like "yeah, that's pretty cool" lmao
Hearing this reaction is like having a joke explained, before you hear the joke itself. The joke might be really good, but the joy has been totally removed.
Is the joke that Floor Jansen is an Opera singer, this composition is comparable to Mozart and in fact not a commercial song?.
I can totally understand your surprise and disappointment if you were told that Floor Jansen is an opera singer. She isn’t. She may have classical training but she doesn’t use a classical voice.
Tarja Turunen, the first singer of Nightwish was a trained soprano, and was using her soprano in first Nightwish songs.
If you want to have a closest classic experience with Nightwish I would recommend to listen some songs from their second album, Oceanborn.
Maybe Swanheart would be the closest song to an opera experience you can hear from Nightwish. the album version is available on Nightwish’s RUclips channel.
But yet, It’s only opera influence. Nightwish is a metal band and metal music, by definition is based on electrical amplification and distortion, so you can’t have the same experience than the one you have with classic.
For the expectations, I think “Poet and the Pendulum” or “The Greatest Show on Earth” would have been more in line. Honestly, I think you would’ve gotten more of a kick from listening to “Romanticide” (heavier song) as well. “Ghost Love Score” in comparison is a lot more subdued and easier to get into for the the masses.
To understand why the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen is dubbed the metal Mozart, one probably should look at the sheet music. it's not to say his compositions mimick or sound like Mozart's. It is to say he is a masterful composer. The composition in this video is barely heard. The entire orchestral arrangements he composed and then arranged with help from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and played as a back track and digital samples here is very subdued in this live version. The interlude in the middle is about the only part you can hear with any clarity. While classical fans might not be impressed by the rock concert delivery here, the classical music masters of today have all praised Holopainen's compositions as genius.
That's why I always imagine NW show with complete orchestra behind playing live 🙂 this music is so good written and it deserved to be delivered as a full package.

With your background and limited experience with metal music, i think you've been misinformed (with all the best intentions) on what to expect.
Two things that people say all the time, will trigger a different expectation for you, than it would for most others who are more versed in rock and metal music.
The first quote, "The metal Mozart" will give you the idea he has Mozart stylings while that honorary title has nothing to do with Mozart himself, but rather is about how Tuomas composes music in detail, everything you heard came from his mind, he's a modern day composer who, like Mozart, started composing at a pretty early age. (not as young as Mozart tho)
The second quote that misleads is "She has Operatic qualities" because while it is true she can do Opera, she doesnt use a lot of those skills in this song, or at all really, only a handful of songs you will notice she indeed has that background as well, i personally prefer to call her "Classically trained" like she herself (Floor) seems to prefer as well.
So yes, you came in with expectations that were not brought by the band and song because you made the logical association to your world of music knowledge due to the well meant but incorrect quotes given to you prior.
Nightwish also has not much to do with Opera or Operetta, it being Symphonic metal and having elements of those classifications, the music is actually more closely related to musical theater.
And the songs are story telling rather than subjected lyrics (exceptions taken, they have a few subject songs as well), and yes, some songs are sea shanties, others are downright heavy metal, and again other songs sound like movie scores, fairy tales, love songs, dark songs about inner demons... they have all that and more, so putting them in a single box is pretty much impossible.
I hope you'll dig a bit deeper into Nightwish, with a fresh look and no direct expectations, that way you wont get distracted by your expectations and can hear the songs as their own works of music and see/hear what they actually bring to the table as a musicians collective.
Symphonic metal tends to be bombastic, but it can also be very small and tiny, the symphonic part is simply that classical instruments are used as the undertone, for highlights and for continuity during intervals and breaks, it's used in quite a clever way as it sets the mood for the songs Tuomas creates.
Thnx for the reaction to this song, and with the expectations you had due to your own background, i can see why it confused you because indeed, nothing matched the expectations you had due to the "correct but wrong information" you were given prior. (fun fact, metal and classical.. are closer related than you might think ;) but you will find out i'm sure, after all, you do know Wagner and Orff, and both of those are.. pretty metal, just saying hehehe)
