The put a Veyron Sport round a few years after that, and that did a 1:16.8 topping the board. Doubtless the Chiron would be faster than that but whether it could beat the Pagani Huayra blistering time who knows
McLaren 765lt would be screaming to be at that track if this is how the show was still going on...
Anybody else noticed the damage on the Veyron on the right side? :) My guess is that would cost about the same as a nice hot hatchback!

It's buying it from the manufacturer that is going to cost thousands. Unless you own your own metal and paint workshop and the knowledge to fix a million pound piece of engineering. It's going to be incredibly expensive.

This proves the Bugatti is not a track car. Its built to go fast in a straight line and have a huge top speed. It's too heavy to go around turns.
It's also made as a car you could use as a daily driver.

Jami Kivelä it is faster but the ferrari enzo has rwd, significantly less horsepower, no turbos, 4 less cylinders. So I think the ferrari enzo is more impressive since it's only slightly slower than the bugatti Veyron which doesn't have to deal with handicaps that the ferrari enzo has to deal with.
and just think that Bugatti isn't even street legal. vw lied and changed Bugatti to get it up to top speed on its first top speed test. I guarantee it was tuned to be illegally fast and still cant touch a car with 1/3 of the engine... and average bugattin lost like 3m every car sold

I was obsessed with the Bugatti veyron when I was a kid. When it didn't top the power board I cried for hours. I've just come back to watch it now and both of those cars are engineering marvels
The Super Sport topped the list didn't it? Still, 1.4 g of lateral acceleration is extremely impressive from the Veyron.
Veyron was always a showboat, some nimble little beauty was always going to be better, that's what this airfield track primarily tests after all, agility - not speed, not power, agility

The owner went to fill it up with petrol and crashed into the concrete plinth around the petrol pump.
The veyron was never meant to be a track car, its the ultimate grand tourer. It shows that speed and comfort can go hand in hand.

Zonda would probably still beat the veron around Imola, as you still have fast corners like Tamburello and the Rivazza's where the zonda can carry way more speed

For people who didn't follow the show at the time, this was a big moment. TG hadn't been allowed use the Veyron for several years, and there was always constant speculation that as the fastest car in the world, it was almost certainly going to go top. They had done a few features with it in previous series, but had never been allowed to use it on a push lap. And there had been big build up to this all week long prior to the show airing.

***** turbos can give a rather large boost in power, and just having more power doesn't make it better
***** power isn't the only thing though the Zonda v12 sounds so much better. maybe that only matters because Im 15 but whatever...
Kevin Farnand Lets be fair guys Turbos are only really useful in the straights where you can really open up on the throttle. When Cornering the Turbo does not help as much in fact it can work against you in a corner depending on the car and the skill of the driver.
In fact sometimes on a course that has ton's of corners a toning down the HP works better.
Kevin Farnand and the zonda is better looking and will have much better handling

Ive watched this segment so many times since it first aired, the way that zonda sounds my god. And Hammond hamming it up lol
I still prefer the McLaren F1. No forced induction and incredibly agile instead of built for raw speed. And I'm speaking as an American here. Then again, I'm also a fan of cars like the Toyota MR2 and Mazda RX-7 which (unlike the McLaren) I've driven and enjoyed the experience. On the other end of the spectrum, I took an '81 Buick Regal (I know. Shut up) with a 350 Olds Rocket engine out for a hot lap on Michigan Speedway (basically in my back yard) and pussed out when I hit 125 with pedal to spare because I didn't want to wreck, but that car was also fun to drive since I could feel the power and potential in the car while it did everything I asked of it.
This comment is rambling a bit since I've been in the booze, so I apologize. But I very much prefer a fun car to drive over the fanciest cars and I get a kick out of pushing a car to its limits (within reason) and like well-rounded cars over brute force horsepower. I give bonus points for naturally-aspirated powerplants for the throttle response and overall feel (my daily driver has a turbocharged engine and I'm still working out the feel for when the turbo kicks in and it's a learning experience).

I always thought that the Veyron is a bit too heavy to top the times. It's still impressively fast around a track as well as in straight line.
It's the first time I hear James said "Some say..." instead of Jeremy.
Id still rather have a Bugatti which you can actually have as a daily driver..those other cars are more or less street legal lap cars.
Im betting the Bugatti is safer, more comfortable, and feels as nice going 65mph than the others...but then again thats not what the stig lap is about.

Worth pointing out that that this is only one of a few occasions where 2 featured cars in one episode had some sort of problem, no matter how big, going round the track. The Veyron with the right side slightly dented and the Zonda F Roadster with the engine smoke, then a few seasons later the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40 with mechanical issues. They both got a DNF and a DNS.
The Veyron lap was very neat and tidy, well done by the stig to manage all that power and weight

Dear top gear. As an "average Joe" I do notice that old stig seemed to drive a lot better than new stig. Old stig doesn't hold drifts on the exits of the corner . but what I noticed is the fact that the new stig hold drifts about 50-80 ft when exiting corners which in essences slows down your lap time ... So as an enthusiasts I can't say the new lap times are not 100% accurate.... Hence we all know Ben collings is old stig.. Can you at least help new stig drive better

thayyib mahmood look very closely at when the drift happens. it ok to get drifty into the apex but as soon as you come out you want the car as str8 as possible. just look at when Ben Collins drives, its a big difference from when this new stig drives.
there was a brief period i do believe that lewis hamilton was the stig. because of the wider lines the car took over ben collins old line. just my 2 cents (i know clarkston is gasping after reading this) lol :0

Seriously, what is your argument? Tracks have bends, roads have turns. The only circumstance that I can think of where 'going in a straight line as fast as you can', is applicable; is in a Drag race.
Nice drift around the final corner. The Zonda looks about twice as exciting to drive as the Veyron.

For people saying the technology is holding back the Veyron, you are very mistaken. The Lotus Exige V6, Nissan GTR, Corvette Stingray, Porsche 911 Turbo, Lexus LFA, New Honda NSX, Porsche 918, Ferrari LaFerrai, McClaren MP4-12C & P1 are all cars fitted with tremendous amounts of technology. They wouldnt put it in the car if it were detrimental to the cars performance. The reason the Veyron is slower is because of its AWD and massive, quad turbod, 16 cylinder engine. Those 2 alone probably add...

I remember when we thought the veyron was the be all, end all of hypercars, it used to be the ultimate car and the car you went to if you wanted speed, it was the trailblazer, the benchmark since then there have been faster cars and better but nothing has matched how monumental of an achievement it was since

I love the Zonda and the F version (much cleaner front/rear fascias) is as good as it gets. Naturally aspirated, huge V12, manual gearbox. I love it. It's definitely got the right ingredients to be rewarding to drive, while the Veyron is rewarding to show off...not that the Zonda is particularly boring to look at.

The Veyron was actually faster around the track than I expected. It's pretty heavy, and AWD + massive horsepower can only do so much - listen to those tires screech around every turn! _But_ what impressed me was how stable it was. That AWD earning its place in the car.
I never noticed how much the Veyron under steered until now. still would buy a Veyron over the pagani if I could afford it though.

The Nurburgring has much more straights than Top Gears track. Same reason why the Zonda was faster than the Veyron. Good for straights, not as good around corners.

I would absolutely love to see a Hennessy Venom GT or an SSC Ultimate Aero TT on this track. Both with 1200+hp and around 2700 pounds. low, and wide. I'd be very curious as to what the "Stig" could do with these two cars around this track!?!?...

Thę Køenigşegg I looked it up and other than Top Gear's track, there are no showings of any track runs. I'll give credit to the engine being straight out of a Ford GT and the body being made of carbon fiber, but that's it. It's onky made to go straight.

I loved the Veyron when I was a kid. I was bitterly disappointed that it didn't get to the top of the leader board. I always wanted it to do better. I actually stormed off out of sight at the time and pouted for hours.

Sandeep Singh The Zonda R doesn't count, it's not a road legal car. Anyway, the Zonda R doesn't hold the lap record either - that goes to a BAE Sea Harrier that did the lap in 31.2 seconds.

Not a surprise though. In an industry this exclusive yet competitive, can't be easy to stay a float, especially as a young company. And because the gumpert is quite frankly ugly, it makes it even more difficult.

Everybody here shitting on the Veyron doesn't realize for once that such a heavy car still managed to be on the top 5.
The GTR's time shows what a masterpiece of engineering it actually is because it's "only" got 560hp and it weighs 1.8 tons, but it handles so much better than most other cars and that's what is surprising to me. I wonder how they did that. I really respect that car, but my personal favorite is the Lexus LFA

Look at how slow the last corner in the Veyron is compared to the Koeninsegg CCX with the Top Gear wing. The Stig did it perfectly in the CCX.

The stig used to be Michael Schumacher but now it's changed due to skiing.
The Shad Schumacher was the Stig only on that show where the FXX came out on the track. The real Stig here is/was Ben Collins, look it up
It's not like the driver had no choice. He signed the contract and I'm sure it's part of the fun being anonymous. Usually once they replace The Stig with a new driver the old guy's name comes to light anyway.

pagani responded to this, saying that they were on zonda r tires, but they were cut with tread, so they were street legal. They continue to say that they offer 3 different sets of tires, with varying compounds. theres an article on it if you go on jalopnik, give it a search.
