Precision forge work. That tong looks like a winner...Dave
Great video, as usual. Super idea, possibly use a 3-4” section of pipe as a coupling to round bar for the reins.
Very interesting concept for tongs. Sorry to hear you think your channel is floundering. Whenever you put out a new video, I always stop what I'm doing and watch it. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate your support.
With soo much tool changing i would definitely catch those parts with my hands....at least twice.
Yes, I need to be sure what I'm grabbing for. I've been burned more than a few times. Thanks.
You could add flux to the tennons and inside the pipe and add some copper or brass wire inside the tube and braze the two pieces together inside the forge.
Good tip. I will experiment with forge welding pipe to solid bar in my next video. Thanks.
I feel like your channel is more relatable than the majority of other blacksmithing channels. You don't have power hammers or presses, like many of us in the real world, yet you do top tier work, imo.
I appreciate your comment. I guess I'm more the everyman, ham and egger blacksmith!
I think this is great. I'm a beginner smith and I find making tongs tough enough without spending time drawing out the reins. Fine if you have a power hammer but I'm just an amateur working in his shed. I know the purists will complain but why not work work smart when you can ? Great job, would you love to see more like this or maybe a series on skills?
I'm always thinking how to make things less of a chore when hand hammering while maintaining quality. Not easy but possible with some ingenuity. I will do a follow up on this. Thanks.
Yep so am I and is great to see some smithing done simple. I'm looking for a has forge and wondering if there is any recommendation on what type and size
sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Boone Jalen Instablaster ;)
@Warren Jimmy I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I like this idea. The pipe handles will transmit the heat less. A quick trip to welding heat or a dimple after fitting will make them secure. I have used dimples to secure metal tools to wood handles with great success
I will expand and improve upon this in upcoming videos. Thanks for your support.
Always inspirational. Loved the tool juggling while you were punching the holes. And I absolutely admire how your style shows through even on your prototypes. Loved it.
I appreciate your support.
Great idea sir, can't remember where found your channel but sure glad did, like the idea of the pipe handles, esp if your running low on steel and maybe rivet them to solid pieces? Any way thank for the hours of entertainment and ideas!!!
Based on the comments like yours, I'll try this in some different ways. Thanks.
You could use a small punch and "rivet" the handles on. Just a thought.
Nicely done. I'm amazed with how pristine you keep your anvil and tools. The humidity is so high in my area everything steel (my anvil, hammer & tongs) has a light coat of rust on them, always. Your tongs look great. Thanks for posting.
I frequently spray and wipe my tooling with WD-40. Humidity is off the charts here. Thanks.
I like this. I'm trying some different tong making methods myself. Yesterday it was blanks cut from heavy mower blades. Not easy but interesting to try. Thanks for the video!
How about some telescopic ones ;)
Now that would really be something. Very interesting... Thanks.
Nice work, young man!
You're an artist! And I'm just an old man who recently bought my first anvil & forge. An old apprentice...
👏👏👏 Fro Brazil 🇧🇷
you always have unique ideas for your projects. I wonder about dropping some brass the down the pipes to " braze" them on
Tom Farrow I was going suggest the same
Thanks a very interesting idea. Something for my to explore... Thanks.
I love your work and watching your videos. You are a great "explainer" and always clear. Thanks for all of the work you put into them!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
По-моему, у этого деда самая ровная наковальня на ютюбе )
Add a mechanical fastener or just weld them . And in my experience tubing transfers heat so fast that you’re just asking for trouble . I’m just concerned about reaching in the forge and weakening the joint by the heat transfer every time.
In my next video, I will try to forge weld this sort of connection. And I think you're right - as is this joint will maybe weaken through repeated heating and cooling and also from vibration from hammer blows. It has potential but needs improving. Thanks.
Interesting Idea but not so sure on how well they will hold up overtime compared to a solid reign would love an update video on them in a few months to see how they have worked and if you recommend or not and or if they work but modifications had to be made with use
As is, I don't think they will hold up as well as solid rein tongs. But I will try a forge weld in my next video. And I'll certainly give an update on how this tong works, etc. Thanks.
Cool Tongs ! I like that you are always trying something new.
Hi Glen, Masterful as always. You said in an earlier video that you like to change your tongs from time to time. Are those changes just for mechanical improvements? Do you sell the bending block apparatus? Thanks again, Jerry
Hi Jerry, I sometimes just change for the sake of change. But mainly for what i think will be improvements. I do sell the bending jig (platen & pins). Talk to you. Thanks.
I watch many of blacksmithing clips from several blacksmiths, but your work is absolutely in a different league and in a much higher class. You also come up with interesting new designs and ideas and your end products are close to perfection as if coming out of a manufacturing line. Your shop is always very clean and your setup of tools is close to a model-shop. I sincerely thank you on behalf of many like me and just hope that you continue producing these clips.
You're being way too kind. There are other, much talented blacksmiths on RUclips but I do try my best to think outside the box and am not afraid to experiment in my videos. Comments like yours are a big reason why I keep at it. Thanks very much.
Очень понравилась организация рабочего пространства.
Но идея рукоятей из труб не самая лучшая, разве только жёстко приварить. Любой люфт в хвате сбивает контроль.
Yaaa..... first in on view...
Interesting take on this....
And sitting while working with superhot metal is a little bit unnerving, especially when the runway is really short to move out when something is going awry...
Yes, sitting while forging is definitely more risky. Thanks.
I really like this idea Glen. I think this could work for other applications as well
This has potential. I will try to do this again but forge weld the joint and see.. Thanks.
You always make great things including Tongs - hang in there on RUclips - it's always hard for me to tell what's going on with my videos/channel despite all the analytics provided by RUclips - it may have nothing to do with your content quality or quantity (which has always been top notch) . Hopefully things turn around......cause you deserve it..
RUclips is hard to predict. I'm not sweating it too much and in fact, this video has helped a lot. Go figure... Thanks and good luck in your own work.
Glen i really like your videos. I appreciate the time you spend making videos for us to view. I would drop some 3/16 rivets in the tangs through pipe.
I like the fact that you come up with various styles of tongs and as usual, so clean.
Good looking tongs. Suggestion, if you go on more bike trips, have a destination in mind i.e. engraver, scrap metal dealer, etc.
Yes, I plan to do such video trips. Thanks.
I really like your work that you do sir and your videos are great!!!!
Stellar or not I'm always in for a video, esp. experimental blacksmith projects. So what made you come up with this concept? Maybe consider threads with a lock nut and screw different tong heads on one set of handles?
Just trying something different for the sake of trying something different. But it also has to do with hand hammering only and not wanting to draw the reins which would take forever for me. Thanks.
You are a great artist .
César Escobar from Silicon Valley CA.
Always interesting to see the directions your imagination takes you. Weight isn't an issue with the tongs I use, but if it was I would certainly think about trying this. Thanks!
Just something different... Thanks.
Clever idea, thx! And yeah, sealing those pipe ends would probably reduce any worries about undesirable 'venting'!
Nice idea. I like it.
Looks stout - will have to try in a V-bit tong configuration!
Thanks and good luck in your blacksmithing.
Glen, thanks for this lighter weight tong idea!
I have some short stock I could try this with, and getting some black pipe from the big box store will be easy.
What a great experiment. They are fantastic tongs that could be a starting point for many other styles. Glenn the box has been thought outside of and its awesome! Great video sir.
Does the hollow handle throw off the balance at all? like do they seem jaw heavy cause of the less weight on the reins?
I haven't used this tong enough to know but that's a good question and something I will figure out. Thanks.
may i suggest that you dimple the pipe into the metal of the tong jaws that would make a no slip gripe of pipe to jaw.
Thanks for the good suggestion.
Don't have shorts? Just cut up some trousers hahaha, ur a legend man
I got a good laugh from your comment. Thanks.
My thought when I saw the fit of the pipe on the tenon was that you could just leave it square with a bit of a chamfer and then use a couple of blows to the pipe when it is hot to square it and hot press fit it, then the join would likely be cleaner. I also like the idea of plugs in the open ends.
Good idea. I will give this another go, get a better fit, and try to forge weld the pieces. Thanks.
What a great idea, I'll be trying out your design Glen.
Cheers Derek.
I wonder if those will work loose over time.
I think they might. So I will try a forge weld next video. Thanks.
I love those giant blocks of steel you have
yeah,, cool 👍
Excellent idea!! Thank you for sharing your endeavors!!
Another great video Glen thanks

Love your anvil, can you give me some info on it
The small, block style anvils i use are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan. Made from 4145 and completely heat treated top to bottom. My main anvil weighs only 88 pounds. Thanks.
“Channel has been floundering for less than stellar reasons....” I don’t know why. I’m constantly watching Your content because of the simplicity. For learning and the fact that you work very clean and organized like me. Keep it up.
Q. Are you using a brass wire brush to get the brushed brass patina finish?
👍 your skills are par none
Quote of the day: “I dislike forge welding in my seated position.”
Boy, and how! I sure would too!
Cheers, Glen!
Happy Memorial Day, where ever you may find yourself!
Whipple
Sitting while forging is definitely more risky. Thanks and I wish you the best.
I think sealing the pipe ends is a good idea. The other end of the pipe probably won't get too hot but if they did I just imagine cooling the tongs down during use and water spurting up haha
I will do more experimenting and see. Thanks.
That is a great idea 💡 thank you 🙏🏼
You really need a hydraulic press a 20 ton at least
That would make this pipe idea moot for sure.
I have considered the idea of drilling & tapping short reins like that, and having a set reins (or two) that could be screwed on. I think it's really an idea looking for a problem that doesn't exist. It really doesn't make much sense, as there are very few situations where space or weight would make that much of a difference. It could be somewhat useful for a smith who didn't have much space, assuming they had several bit styles they only used once in a great while. But you would need a relatively large number of tong bits that you rarely use but need occasionally. Shipping costs are another potential reason, but you would still need to ship at least a pair or two of tong reins.
I agree that this may be superfluous for most applications and solid rein tongs would be better. But I'll continue to experiment and see... The idea of reducing weight for shipping has crossed my mind. Thanks.
For securing the pipe without any kind of welding or braze, you could use your guillotine tool with the pointed dies to pinch the pipe into the stock enough to keep it from dislodging itself. If you did it all the way around it could serve a bit of decorative purpose as well if you brassed the indented ring to make it pop.
Tongs look cool. Pipe ends is nice idea. If tenon are bigger than inner diameter of pipe and then hot press i think they will be more durable then👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I should have left the tenons larger. Next time... Thanks.
I like it. Great video. Thank you...
Hi Steve, Glad you like this one. Thanks.
Glen: Perhaps a couple spots of weld at the joints would be helpful. Jon
I will try to forge weld pipe to solid bar next. Thanks.
Because of the Covid crisis, a lot of people are struggling. Don't even think your blacksmithing or video content are the cause, lots of people just can't help now. Heck, I even sat and watched all of your touring vids on your scooter! I love all of your content, and your relaxed presentation. Dont despair, your loyal fans are still Interested. Stay safe.
they're stiffer and lighter but how do they handle vibration? I'd expect the stiffness to be a downside in that regard.
I need to really give these a good workout to be able to tell. I'll do a follow up. Thanks.
Perhaps a cannelure or groove and then a crimp on the tube would probably make a more secure attachment. But lazy as I know I am I would go straight to the electric welder...
I'm always trying to think of ways to avoid welding. I like the groove and interlocking crimp idea. But for my next video, I'll try forge welding this pipe / solid bar connection. Thanks.
Might I suggest longer Tenons, and a double rivet per reign with the rivers vertically when you’re holding them. And some nice round head rivets in the end of the reign would suit the set well. Or maybe also on the tenons you could skip the heat on the tubes and do a mild taper on their ends to guide the tube onto the tenon and drive them the rest of the way on. Definitely longer tenons too though. I think they’ll need a bunch of support, at least with the way I grip tongs.
Thanks for the good suggestions. I will try to forge weld pipe to solid bars next. But rivets or some sort of depressions or dimples might also better secure these parts. Thanks.
Nice job and an interesting idea. After looking at some of your tongs, I've been experimenting with converting used garden shears into light-weight tongs. They seem to be similar steel to springs and convert well. Thank you.
Very interesting idea, how about making the tenons have a long, slow taper wich would make a friction fit to the pipes and if they get lose you just need to tap them on the end to make them tight again, would even make the reins detachable, tap on tap off :)
Very interesting idea. That might be something I need to explore. Thanks.
This is a genius idea, I don't know why it never occurred to me. Most bolt cutters are made essentially the same way, small drop forged jaws and tube handles. This just made me reconsider how I make all of my tongs going forward, esp since I just spent the last 2 forging sessions drawing out a set of reins. I'll probably either drill holes through the pipes to plug weld to the jaws, or right through and rivet them. I imagine brazing would work too, but I'd have to get rods for that. How have these ones held up?
If the pipes can be joined securely, this can save a tong of time if you need to draw out handles from solid stock. Good luck with your work. Thanks.
Podrias informarte y fabricar unas espuelas vaqueras españolas..me ayudarias mucho en mi.nuevo trabajo...spurs horses spain. Graciass elaboracion
That is an interesting take on tongs there. I've never seen anyone do that before. The only possible problem that I could personally see here is the tubing coming loose from the solid stock but they are neat tongs just the same. Well done!
I haven't used these tongs too much but they're so far holding up. Thanks.
I think your videos are quite stellar. Thanks for the education.
I love that anvil . Did you have that made special never seen one like that very nice . No horn though .
Drill and tap and you can make them or you can just the length of them
That would make these extra fancy and versatile. Thanks.
Next video you should try it
Mr. Glen I have said this before and I will say it again, I really like your way of thinking outside of the box with your ideas. This is a great tong idea. Keep up the good work.
I'm trying my best. Some of my ideas like this have potential. Some, not so much... Thanks.
Really appreciate the work you do and especially the alternatives ways of doing things ...really useful for beginners like myself.
Maybe include the Paypal donate button in each vid description and have the tip jar thing to(I think they have something like that....) for those like me that are broke ass metal artists with irregular income, especially these days since I'm basically shut down. I can't really afford to do a monthly, but if I get some extra cash would throw something your way happily through Paypal.
I appreciate your suggestions and support. Thanks.
Sorry to hear your channel is "foundering" for some reason. Don't no why, other then being smaller niche content for us metal heads. Filming and content is great. Maybe some more variety. Hopefully your man-about-town videos will improve viewership. I've been loving those. Maybe covfefe has got people sub'ing to lots more channels so therefore dividing out there viewing time more thinly. But I can see that being short term as people return to the tried and true quality content such as yours. Keep doing what your doing and don't panic too hard. :)
I'm not sweating it. I know there are bigger issues out there and will keep plugging away. Thanks.
nice great job
I admire your channel - you're one of the few people that is trying innovative techniques, not just demonstrating old techniques.
RE: tubular tong handles, great idea. I think that has legs. My suggestion is to make the tenon longer & oval, and include large dimples on two sides. Heat the tube, drive it over the tenon, and push the tube material into the large dimples creating a mechanical bond as well as the shrinking bond.
It seems to me that this could be made to work quite nicely with a dies for the smithy magician - a pair of large domes on the left,, and the smaller setting domes on the right.
Good suggestion - longer tenons with dimples is something I will try as it's in line with my style of keeping it simple. Thanks for your support.
Could you comoment on and maybe show how you adjust your forges flame. My steel comes out with heavy scale on it. If I turn down the oxygen it it becomes difficult for me to move the metal. Or is that normal. Help!
Thanks for your work show ,a really pleasure to watch your good planning and quality in your workshop l see a new conception for that-s job ,fantastic, all the best maiestro!!
I really enjoyed watching you make those. Well done!

Thanks Glen another great video. Always enjoy the blacksmith videos.
Any particular reason for this experiment, or just for fun and interest? If just for fun, might be neat to use that pipe and forge like you would a regular set. Faster to flatten out the jaw and joint sections and would be lighter weight with the tube handles. Might need a little higher carbon content pipe to give added stiffness, but that might require added cost/time tempering, but the regular pipe might be just fine. Sometime to maybe try, anyhow. :)
Mostly just fun but also thinking about options for reducing tong weight for shipping. Thanks.
I watch add for you. You are a amazing person Glen..I think God has made you by forging such a solid and hard man.
I appreciate your kind comment. Thanks for watching, for putting up with ads, and for taking the time to comment.
being that the handles are tubing, will that not cause the heat to travel to the handles faster?
I haven't used these enough to know. But I think the pipes might dissipate the heat quicker. We'll see... Thanks.
If sealing the pipe ends, you will need to put in a weep hole somewhere so the trapped air can't expand inside the space and loosen the joint.
Good point. Thanks.
Very interesting
Neat concept! Looks great for quick one-offs?
With some small improvements, I think this idea can really work. Thanks.
좋은 생각이다!
나도 한번 해봐야지
Really enjoy your videos , for someone just starting this it really helps . What kind of anvil is that ?
It was one he had custom made.
The small anvils i use are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan. So I guess you could call them GS Anvils. Thanks.
Love your videos. What is the name of that tool you use that mounts in your anvil and looks like 2 steel blocks where the top one goes up and down like a guillotine. Very unique. Would love some info. It can be seen at the 11:40 mark of the video. Is it something you custom made? Thanks!
That is one of my guillotine / fullering tools. I used to sell this version but no longer do so. I might revisit selling something similar in the future. Thanks for watching.
@@gstongs I’m onboard with buying one when you do. I’d also like some tongs. Beautiful work.
Your channel might be floundering, but you are great blacksmith.
Nice job as always 👍
Thank you for sharing, Man you are good thank you and have a nice and safe day.
I wish you the same. Thanks.
Glen keep up the good work. You and black bear forge and Alex Steele are my favorite channels. Keep up the videos they are very informative and entertaining. Can you do more work on the whiteboard and explain exactly what you're going to do with drawings?. I really like when you do that
I'm very honored to be one of your favorites. Those other guys are way more talented... I will do my best to incorporate more whiteboard sketches. Thanks.
