    We haven't had trains in our local area since 2000. The rails were removed, and we now have 300 kms of atv trails. We love it, and we ride often.

      Been there done that. We love to hear the sound of a train off in the distance but could never live any where near the tracks. People say that you get used to it but I'm not sure how.

      Lived 1 to 3 miles form SP and UP tracks most my life. Love the chimes at night of the Amtracks and it's easy to tell if they are running late. Barstow rail-yard had a rhythmic thing going on. Great to see it in action.

    REALLY COOL VIDEO!!! I have a couple questions, though:
    -Why do the railcars coast by themselves?
    -Does the UP have trackage rights on the line?

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  6 лет назад +7

      Hi Milton- I assume that you are referring to the cars coming down from the hump. That is the way that they classify the rail cars in Barstow and in other hump yards. The cars are pushed up to the crest of the hump and then uncoupled. As they roll down hill, there are retarders that control their speed and their path into the appropriate track is lined up. That way they coast down to a stop on the track that represents the train that they will be leaving on. As far as UP, yes the UP has for at least 100 years had trackage rights on the Santa Fe and now BNSF to go from Yermo/Daggett down to West Riverside, CA via Cajon Pass.

    • @imapaine-diaz4451
      @imapaine-diaz4451 4 года назад +1

      The "HUMP" is a small elevation or hill. An incoming train is pushed up this hill and at the top the cars are decoupled. each car has a unique identifier which is read by a scanner. the identifier says where the car needs to go, how heavy it is, and which train is being made up in the yard and which track that includes that car. the rest of the yard is "downhill" from the hump, so gravity takes the car and sends it down the track. there are "retarders" built into the tracks which squeeze the wheels of the cars and control the speed of each car so they don't go too fast. the scanners at each switch operate the switches according to the computer system, to direct that car through each switch in turn and onto the correct track for that consist. When all cars in the train (called a "consist") are lined up and coupled together, the power units are assigned according to the needs of the consist and the train is ready to be dispatched, and off they go on the next leg of their journey.

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  7 лет назад +6

      Hi Eddie- this yard is non-stop 24/7. It is the primary entry point for BNSF freight traffic into the LA Basin. Consequently, most if not all freight cars are classified at Barstow and then move to the LA Basin as BAR trains. Any actual freight train (i.e. not intermodal or auto rack) that you see on anyone's videos from Cajon Pass is a BAR train moving from the classification yard in Barstow to different destinations in SoCal including San Diego (BARDGO), Los Angeles (BARLAC), and Fontana (BARKAI). These trains have to be put together and the reverse trains taken apart at BAR. Barstow also handles many trains from NorCal as well as Washington State including the BARRIC (Barstow to Richmond), BARBAK (Barstow to Bakersfield), and the BARPAS (Barstow to Pasco, WA). Consequently, the yard is always hopping. Thanks for watching!
