Great insight Joe :) Quick question, do you use manual focus with your motorsports videos?
Thanks! 90% of the time I use manual focus :)
@@joenicklo Any tips for someone who relies to much on AF?
@erikgouletphoto it’s going to sound cliche but practice. Practice practice practice. Luckily, motorsports is a lot of repetition, so you have the opportunity to practice/rehearse shots over and over - especially at longer races.
I’d also suggest not shooting wide open until you’re 100% comfortable with pulling your own focus. Stick with f4 or 5.6 - that will give you some more flexibility than opening up all the way.
I have to say, I’m really happy to read someone willing to learn to pull focus manually. Too many people rely on autofocus.
Pinning your comment.
@@joenicklo Thanks for the advice. I will put the f4-5.6 tip to work for my practice. I'm purchasing a BM6K FF and the manual focus only was always holding me back. Cheers my friend and keep posting your vids, they help out a lot!
@@erikgouletphoto Appreciate you watching (and hopefully subscribing) ;)
Hey Joe, I'd love a video on how you make connections for motorsports jobs :) your shots are awesome.
Noted! Thanks for the idea!
First! Great tips my dude!
Thanks for watching sir!!
These are some tips I really needed Joe, thanks!
Happy to help!
Thansk for an excellent video, best channel when it comes to filming cars!
Glad you enjoy it!
Great points!
TY sir!
some tips for microphones for drifting
I like the Rode Video Mic Pro+ because it has the option for a Safety Track. This protects your sound from clipping if the car is louder than you expected.
Another trick, if your mic doesn’t have safety track option, I lower the right channel’s gain in camera about 10db less than the left channel.
Until cameras get 32-bit float internal recording, that’s my best tip for you :)
Do you have any tips on what framerates to use etc? I want to be able to speedramp but have realistic motion blur on both the non slowed down part and the slowed down part. What settings do you use for things like this? Thanks

Hey Joe, I'm not even sure if you'll get a chance to reply this, but any advice would be great. So I've been asked to shoot some video from upcoming races for a motorsport team. I've always used my phone so now I'm looking at getting a camera (maybe a tripod). Are you able to recommend any gear for a beginner that won't break the bank? Also great video btw, really insightful
Hey there. What's your budget range? I can make some suggestions based on that. Appreciate you watching.
@@joenicklo thank you so much for getting back to me, it says a lot that you take the time to reply to people. This is going to make me sound a bit slow, but I’m not sure. Realistically I don’t want to go too high given I’m a complete beginner. (Do you have a price point where you would start?) If we were to focus on the body and lenses can you pick anything up for around 2k? I can go higher but it’s just a huge investment for a beginner) I had a look online and just got completely lost. Thank you in advance!
@@fortythree_media Damn I could've sworn I made a very detailed reply to this with which camera(s) I suggest. Shoot me a DM on Instagram or Discord. @joe.nicklo
Hello, great video but I still have a question. I film with a Sony A7iv and want to film motocross. I film in 4k at 30fps. What is the best shutter speed for this sport to be able to capture fast movements clearly?
Try to follow the 180 degree shutter rule. Watch this: ruclips.net/video/UNkRnNAgqNE/видео.htmlsi=GlMiEBfFzHAA3q_k
@@joenicklo ty for the fast help, i try this out. helped me a lot.
@@hacky8139 You're welcome. I hope the other video explains it well.
Do you use a monopod to stabilize?
Sometimes, but more often than not I use a tripod.
