  • Highlight of this show is @16:30, George Wood singing his original composition, "The Ballad of Groucho Marx". I don't think I've ever seen anyone else tell Groucho to shut up, in song or otherwise.
NOTE: The last few minutes are cut off, which apparently consisted of a display of female swimwear since no one won the quiz. Sorry, folks.
COUPLE #1: Priscilla Larson, who doesn't like drive-ins / George Finfrock, retired mail carrier
COUPLE #2: Toby Lowenstein, dentist's wife / George Wood, TV cameraman and folksinger

When Groucho says Finfrock sounds like a name out of T.S. Eliot, he is referring to Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." When he says "a female is deadlier than a male" he is referring to the line "The female of the species must be deadlier than the male" from Kipling's poem "The Female of the Species."
The "conversation" between Eliot and Kipling is a reference to Kipling's influence on Eliot's poetry and, as a literary critic, Eliot's respect for and defense of Kipling's work. In his 1959 address to the Kipling Society entitled"The Unfading Genius of Rudyard Kipling," Eliot talked about Kipling's influence on his poetry and, in particular, "Prufrock":
"Traces of Kipling appear in my own mature verse where no diligent scholarly sleuth has yet observed them, but which I am myself prepared to disclose. I once wrote a poem called "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock": I am convinced that it would never have been called "Love Song" but for a title of Kipling's that stuck obstinately in my head: " The Love Song of Har Dyal."
Groucho was clearly very sharp and had a great intellect. Although Eliot, Kipling, and their poetry were well known, Groucho's references indicate he was more than casually familiar and he had a deeper understanding of their work and relationship. And all from "riffing" on "Finfrock."

    T. S. Eliot was a huge fan of burlesque and vaudeville while an undergraduate at Harvard. Eliot spent a lot of time at shows at the Old Howard and Keith's theater in Boston. In his later years, Eliot kept a signed photo of Groucho on his mantel in his office at the publisher Faber&Faber in London.

I'm amazed I knew most of the answers the first couple had to answer. I missed the one about where East and West were linked by rail. I knew the others and I sucked at history in school. I had a bad memory for specific details. I did better with general ideas and concepts. However, some of this I've read about again in recent years or read enough to make lucky guesses.

" I missed the one about where East and West were linked by rail." I knew it was either Utah or Colorado. That guy had a pretty good guess -- close but no cigar. The two about France were easy: most school kids are taught that France was our best friend during the Revolution, (so it stands to reason they would recognize us first) and that Franklin was our minister to France at that time.

But Groucho supposedly didn't like the Beatles, at least after seeing Hard Day's Night. He thought they were all so alike you couldn't tell them apart. Maybe he changed his mind later though. 10:00 Greetings from Asbury Park!

Acknowledging that you didn't edit out the ending with Toby Lowenstein in the bathing suit, I wonder who would have felt that it wasn't important.
This piqued my curiosity. So I looked for anyone named Toby Lowenstein in Google Images. Here's some pictures taken in 2013. I believe that the Toby on this show would be in her late 80's by then, but she was obviously a very attractive woman in 1960 and if she retained that quality? Any opinions or knowledge as to whether this is the same woman? (I can't imagine it being that common a name.) The pictures are associated with a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Delray Beach, FL.
