“What’s the best hook knife for spoon carving?” Here’s one of them!

- In this video, I disclose what knife maker I’ve been working with over the past several weeks (Jason Lonon) to create what I believe to be the best hook knife available for spoon carving as of the time of this filming. I’ll discuss it’s attributes, show the results of using it, and explain a bit about the relationship between our tools and the objects they make.

from my noob experience and one thing I've noticed when people are carving with curved knives is that every stroke is slow methodical and precise. Nothing is rushed. At first I thought that this was to show what they were doing better to the viewer. That was till last night when I was trying out my new flex cut kn51 and got a little sloppy trying to rush a boat/shallow bowl in black walnut (dry as a bone and hard as river rocks too) and in my haste i slipped so bad that i missed my thick leather glove and dug in to my wrist and took a decent scoop of skin. At which point I dropped the knife work piece and frantically looked for my first aid kit which someone has borrowed, then I hopped on my scooter and picked up the supplies i needed to patch myself up at the first store i came to. Lesson learned though knowing me not to well heeded till I end up in emergency with a finger or two in a zip lock on ice. The kn51 is great but am very much liking the knife in this video by far

Nice knife.
Hoped to hear some good points on at least why this particular knife is best/better than the others. Design features should be covered better like why is the handle rectangular and not completely oval, how is it better over for example mentioned moras, how is fully convex blade outside better than hollow grind followed by full flat grind on BeaverCraft hooks etc. I'd love to watch such video and that's what I had hoped for in this one.
Some of the things you’re asking of me would be better explained by someone who makes hook knives, not just someone who uses them. I do however plan to do an extensive video in the future showing my top picks for hooks and what I like about them. I’ll try to be as in depth as possible.

Are those knives his long handle or short handle spoon knives. Thanks for a great video. It really helps a rookie (AKA me) just getting into spoon carving buy the right tools the first time around.
I have both and they both have their strengths, but if I had to choose one, it would be the long handled version.

This is the hook that Jason sells alongside a Sloyd in his Spoon Carving Knife Set, yes.

Brad Leslie he’s very very good at what he does. Let me just say this- it takes a lot to get me to switch from hooks I’ve used for years. Jason made it an easy decision.
Does long handle vs short handle make a difference?
This is a great question. From my experience, a long handle is more effective since you can leverage it better. This tends to save wear and tear on your dominant wrist. Jason is now making king handled versions of this knife as well as the version you see here. I have one on the way as we speak

It’s a very good hook for sure and I still use it but my style of carving seems to work best with a hook I got from Matt White as well as one from Josh Whitehead
@@HuronSpoonCo Thanks dude. hey I would love you to review the Robin Wood Depp Open Curve, He only did a limited run of these but I have heard comments saying it is the best hook shape he has ever made.
@@HuronSpoonCo Also.. Is there something to be said about the hollow middle grind of the blade that only several are doing, Westermann and Lonon are a couple that instantly come to mind. It seems that this is the most progressive technology in spoon knife geometry, I am surprised more have not copied it so far (some have). Do you think having to only sharpen the 'rails' is a significant improvement and provides ease of sharpening compared to the traditional grind away the entire face of the knife? I suppose such a feature may come second or even 3rd to you to the way it cuts and feels in the hand?
I’ve never even heard of it actually. Would be hard to review it if I can’t get ahold of one though
I’ve seen no difference in actual cutting performance, but it’s definitely nice when sharpening. Seems to level the sharpening dowel better as well as taking less time due to less surface area to sharpen
