I sat down at my computer Thursday night at 9 pm like I always do….all set for my fix of the Adventures of Jim Baird. I typed in his name but all that came up was his last episode.
My heart rate felt slightly elevated as I raced through the internet searching for Jimmy……where’s Jimmy, where’s Jimmy?
      I was profusely sweating now!!
What’s this shit about Labrador and Newfoundland………..I’m stuck in a freaking tent on the Bonnet Plume.
      Nothing….. there was nothing!
I cried myself to sleep that night. I had to settle for some guy called Ted Baird……..who the hell is he? (Sorry Ted I have watched some of your excellent adventures but I had to throw you under the proverbial canoe for dramatic effect here)
James Jim Baird….you were dead to me!
But then Friday….beautiful Friday came and that very evening so did Jim.
That night I watched Jims incredible videography. Those sweeping vistas across the wide valleys and waters of the Bonnet Plume were almost unbelievable. How could something be so awe inspiring. You captured the play of light and shadow spread across a remote and empty landscape. I’ve spent a lot of time out there in the backcountry of British Columbia and Alberta but this is something special.
      Keep the episodes coming Jim.
      Bloody amazing!!!

It just struck me how much like 'home' this place looks, but home without too many people. At home the river is within dams, the whole valley is filled with houses and there are roads, weekend-huts and cable-cars up the mountains all over the place. That means, if you want to wander around and experience nature like back 'home' you have to go to Yucon.

  • @CanadianSledDog

You're a pioneer, Jim! Thanks for blazing the trail. I'm sure you could have had a more stable life with a "real" job, but what's the reward in stability? I think the greatest danger in life is to learn how to fit the mould of society and fit it well, only to learn later in life that we don't like the role we've cast ourselves in. Can you imagine being an American dentist or someone like that who can afford $30,000 hunting vacations, only to go home, knowing it was over, and face the reality of a life lived almost entirely in the city?

Always a pleasure to see you go on these trips Jim. Last year, after a long day paddling, I burnt through a connection pipe on my lightweight gas stove. The kind of stupid mistake you only make when you’re tired… bye bye easy coffee in the morning… Luckily I also carried a lightweight stickstove. Still not as easy as a gasstove, but more efficient than building a complete fire. No need to carry additional fuel. Keep on making these cool trips, they’re a true inspiration man; yeaaaaaaaa!

Jim does your hand give you and trouble anymore? Did you do any kind of exercises/physical therapy for it?
Reason I ask is that I got bit by a dog a couple months back and it cost me 2 broken bones, 13 stitches, and what I’d guess would be some nerve damage (my hand kinda feels like it’s asleep most of the time)..
