      @@n0madtv beyond the facts that Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and amateur poet) wrote the star spangled banner after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry ( part of the Battle of Baltimore in 1814) this story is 100% false. Actual facts as reported by the commanding officers of both sides follow: 1) Francis Scott Key went privately to a truce ship to secure the release of ONE friend, He represented no one else and was NOT sent by the government. 2) Francis Scott Key was not aboard the Royal Navy ships and never interacted with Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, thus the "ultimatum" is total fantasy. 3) Fort McHenry was most definitely a military installation with a garrison of 1000 men (plus a few wives of some of the officers and senior NCO's). 4) There were only 19 Royal Navy ships present- 5 bomb ketches, 1 Congreve rocket ship (that actually shelled the fort) escorted by 7 Frigates and 3 schooners, plus 3 smaller transports NOT "hundreds of ships". 5)there were only 28 casualties in Fort McHenry 24 wounded and 4 killed. 6) the flagpole at Ft McHenry was solid wood, over 150 feet tall weighing well over a ton. There is no way possible to manually hold it up. 7) The bombardment of Fort McHenry was in preparation for a ground assault - the British commander saw the flag flying and withdrew because he knew the shelling had not been effective and didn't want to risk a frontal ground assault on a such a strong defensive position. (In other words had many of the men died holding up the flag the British would have walked in and then we would have lost. All it takes is a little knowledge of military tactics and strategy, a little geometry and physics, and a little research on the battle to know this story is garbage. The fact that the defense of Fort McHenry quite probably did save the nation SHOULD be inspirational enough without making up a false narrative!

    • @erichammond9308
      @erichammond9308 3 года назад +2

      See my other post in this thread for full details - casualties in Fort McHenry 24 wounded and 4 killed. I'm pretty sure that the British would have been able to take Fort McHenry had any significant percentage of the garrison of 1000 men been killed by the shelling and we'd have lost. The defense of Fort McHenry is quite possibly a pivotal moment that very likely saved our then young nation, and that should be inspirational enough without making up garbage that's easily proven false

      Because of this video that was made so many of the youth now know and the world how important freedom should be regarded… regardless of it being a fabricated tale, it instilled in us a sense of honoring and protecting freedom at all costs. Bless the man who put that minidoc together. The joy I feel and honor and respect I reflect on our past and present patriots. It was never about the flag itself but what it meant. It meant our freedom. And now more than ever are we at another war for that very thing within our country. We must remember what freedom truly is and how life means nothing without it. Let’s keep our home brave and free… and the world. God bless. ♥️

      So first off, don’t mean this as any disrespect to you, kinda just curious about your thoughts, I tend to find my patriotism when specifically thinking about the people and internal values of my nation, even if I don’t see many of those values actually being projected from our countries actions, nor being shown by our people.
      It’s kinda made me lose my love for my nation seeing it grow ever closer (or maybe I’m just noticing now that I’m an adult) into a despotic corrupt figure.
      But yeah just wondering what you’d think as a person who fought for the idea of a free nation

That flag has ever been a symbol of freedom and independence from tyranny; that all have the God given right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There are those in this country who are taught to hate that flag and what it represents, just like the British did all those years ago; that anything outside of what their party's narrative permits is deemed offensive. Slavery filled the earth through serfdom and trade, but the flag being lowered, meant the Americans on land, were surrendering and were returning back to slavery under a British monarchy. But they had a taste of freedom and were never going to be slaves to any monarch, ever again.
    Though, the Star Spangled Banner is uniquely the American anthem, its truths are universal, meaning that it is humanity's anthem and why those who are drawn to the truth of freedom at all cost, bravely lay down their lives for it, so that others could immigrate here and above all other nations, finally have freedom. And think of how freedom traveled around the world, because America was free and helping others to be free. Americans have many times, in many battles, held other nation's flags high, so their lands too can be free, by the continued sacrifices of their brave. 🇺🇸

      And even that's not completely accurate. Francis Scott Key went privately (with permission from president Madison) to secure the release of one friend (a prominent DC doctor and mutual acquaintance of the two). The rest of this is complete fabrication. Fort McHenry was definitely a military installation with masonry walls 13 ft thick, roofs of similar build, plus earthen parapets, a garrison of 1,000 soldiers and mounting 20 heavy guns to seaward (18, 24 and 32 pounder cannon). There were only 19 Royal Navy ships, not "hundreds" and the majority of the shelling was by only 6 - 5 bomb ketches and 1 Congreve rocket ship. The escorting ships (7 frigates, 3 schooners plus 3 smaller transports) only briefly closed range to fire, but withdrew after being hit by highly accurate (for 1814 of course) return fire from the fort. What gets me is that assertion that men alone held up a flagpole 9 stories high weighing over a ton. What a load of garbage.

    This event happened during the war of 1812, NOT the revolutionary war, the place is actually called Fort McHenry and it is still located on an island in the Baltimore Maryland harbor, today, it is a museum, and that flag is still there on display, DURING the war of 1812 the British still considered the United States of America to be their colonies and called them the colonies till after the war was concluded, This is why so many Americans like myself and many others place such value on our great flag, we understand the very high price that was paid for us to have that flag, I and many others are quite willing to fight, bleed, kill and die for that flag, and will do it without a second thought or a single regret.

    This video about the anthem has a bunch of historical inaccuracies, unfortunately, I'm not sure why it keeps circulating but it does. Just to point out a few: 1) the anthem wasn't written during the Revolutionary War, it was actually written in 1814 during the War of 1812 (still fighting the British tho, so that's correct), 2) During the War of 1812, the United States was a country with 15 states rather than being colonies, 3) As far as we know there were no groups of American prisoners being held in the cargo hold of boats, Francis Scott Key was there on a personal mission to free his friend rather than on an official one from the US government, and there are more inaccuracies beyond those 3.

    This has been reviewed all over the internet. It contains many inaccuracies and fallacies. There were no colonies at this point in U.S. History. The U.S. Constitution was in effect, the country of the United States had been born, this was NOT the Revolutionary War it was the War of 1812 (sometimes called the Second War of Independence). Francis Scott Key was sent with another individual to negotiate for the release of an American Doctor. Britain was fighting the Napoleonic Wars at this time and had been thus pre-occupied as the they forcibly pressed American Seamen into British service to maintain a blockade on France and French possessions. Key did successfully present proof that the American prisoner, the Doctor in question, had tended both British and American wounded and secured his release. There is no proof that Key visited any other prisoners or was aware of their plight. The normal flag flew during the night throughout the bombardment and was replaced at morning revelry by a handmade oversize flag made in Baltimore (currently on display in Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C.). Four men died at the fort and possibly 28 additional wounded. No humans died holding up the flagpole. This gentlemen did no research or fact checking and is a fundamentalist minister with a political agenda and sloppy on history. The inspiring survival of the flag and fort after such a massive bombardment did inspire Key to write a poem later set to music and it did officially become the U.S. anthem in 1931, an act of Congress signed into law by then U.S. President Herbert Hoover. See Star Spangled banner, Fort McHenry, Battle of Baltimore-War of 1812.

      It's an example of romanticizing an event to inspire people, but the big takeaway here is that Key was greatly moved by what happened, which inspired him to write those lyrics. Of course, the lyrics don't mention the flag being help up by soldiers. That "fact" came later in retellings.

      Thank you! So glad you wrote a correction. I would only add one thing. It's my understanding that it was a small 'storm flag' that was flown the night of the battle due to the weather. In the morning, they raised the normal, much larger garrison flag - not an "oversize flag." It is that flag, the garrison flag that is on display. The storm flag has been lost to history. Cheers!

    When you said the colonists in the fort could have just put the flag up when it was knocked down made me chuckle but it’s not because I am laughing at you at all!! America has many traditional rules about how we treat our colors. One of them that most people adhere to is that the flag should never touch the ground. I grew up in a military family so I know that particular standard all too well. I just realized that I never really thought about why we have these guidelines until just now. I’m gonna have to look it up but my thoughts are we can’t let it touch the ground because of this story. It couldn’t touch during this battle and our colonists didn’t let it during an event like that so the least we can do now is hold it up as well which isn’t hard to do when you aren’t getting bombs thrown on you (while knowing you’re going to die for it) .
