I feel like people love to focus so much on Bret doing what he did leading to the screwjob, but they don't focus on why he did what he did. First of all, Shawn forced himself to beat the british bulldog in the U.K for the european championship because he wanted to beat Davey in his homeland. Bret walked up to Shawn a month before the program and said "Look, I know we have our issues. But, i want you to know that I won't carry any of that into the ring and I'll put you over for the title." Shawn responded with "I appreciate that Bret, But I want you to know, I'm not willing to do the same and you can go fuck yourself." Which lead to a backstage fight where Bret ripped some of Shawn's hair out. Bret then told Vince he would drop the belt to anyone else in Canada including Shamrock, Austin, or Undertaker. He even said he'd be willing to drop the belt the next night on Raw in New York to Shawn instead. Shawn was the one who was adamant about the match going as planned and him winning the belt at survivor series. Shawn confirmed this in a documentary with his side of the screwjob and how he was acting at the time.

@@Honk-p9g Bret was being petty, but Shawn was even more petty. Shawn was wanting to beat people in the hometowns infront of their families just to make his ego feel good. Vince also was very high on doing stuff like that too because he is notorious for making people lose in their hometowns or important cities to them. Also, Hogan literally did what Bret was asking to do dozens of times and Vince had no issues with that. Bret was still under contract till December and was planning on working a few more dates for the WWF after Survivor Series 97. There was literally nothing wrong with doing the planned finish of Shawn winning via DQ and then Shawn wins the belt the next night on Raw. Vince still had Bret and Bret wasn't planning on taking the title to WCW. But no, Vince trusted a Junkie instead of Bret. That same Junkie, who said he got injured and lost his smile, just so he wouldn't have to job to Bret at WrestleMania 13. Shawn confirmed that as well. Shawn was being so petty at that point that Bret had every right to be the way he was. Not justifying what he did, but he wasn't being an unreasonable asshole for no reason. Cornette was on creative during that time, yes. However, be stated that there was a lot of back and forth between Vince and Bret on the finish to SS of 97. Cornette stated that he mentioned it during a creative meeting with Vince knowing that Bret was teaching Shawn how to apply the sharpshooter in the dressing room. So Cornette knew about the spot, so he briefly mentioned it in that meeting. He did state though that there was no reaction to him saying it and it was like no one paid attention to it during that meeting. I don't know if Cornette actually took "credit" for the finish, because that night he asked Vince if he had a finish, that he didn't even want to know the finish, just that if he had one and Vince said yes. Cornette had always stated he never knew the finish until it happened and he beat everybody out of the arena as soon as it happened. He didn't stay around when Bret lost his shit. So, even though it was said in passing, it wasn't like Vince heard it and went "yeah, let's do that", it was literally like no one even paid attention (how I perceived it from Cornette's words, obviously I wasn't there) when he said to double cross him.

Yeah Cornette says a lot of things and a lot of it is bullshit. Half his stories are other peoples stories. If anybody thinks someone told Vince what to do there your crazy. Funny Cornette brings this story out 20 years later. They made fun of hm in WWE he wasn't much, that's why he wanted out. He would have got booted when his contract was up. He got lucky with OVW. And that he talks like he did a lot. Danny Davis ran the show, he and Rip Rogers ran the classes. Jim was the office boy. He didn't train anyone, didn't develop the instructions for training anybody. He didn't decide who did what. He formatted TV and he got sponsors. That's about it. His shows were only a success with WWE talent on it. Besides that they ran 200 seat capacity areas. Not much success at all.

He said he didn't even know the ending of the match when he walked in and talked to Vince, that day, and only asked him if he had one, because he didn't want his fingerprints on it. Russo has more directly taken credit for planning it and others have said that Hunter yelled out at some point, "If he doesn't want to do business, we need to make him do business".

Brets a little confused obviously. Bruce, while not having anything to do with the planning, has always been quick to the whole Bret screwed Bret theory and supports Vince with his decision, unsurprisingly.
Jim Cornette said he was asked by Vince what he would do if he was in the situation. He thought of the entire "submission" ruse because the crowd didnt have to see the victim make any indication that they were giviing up.
Jim also said unapologetically that he WOULD HAVE ENJOYED SCREWING SHAWN AND WOULD HAVE FIRED SHAWN WAY BEFORE THE MATCH HAPPENED. He has always loved Bret. Bret probably just heard about the Vice documentary or something and then assumed Cornette was bad mouthing him, which wasnt the case.

I hope the information get to Bret (somehow) that Cornette did not "take credit" - he even apologized on the air for suggesting Vince double-cross Bret. Cornette just pitched the idea "Its your belt, just double cross him." And that's it. Vince McMahaon came up with the how. And again, Jim also said he was on Bret's side - he just got tired of McMahon bitching and Shawn whining. I would l for Bret to go on Cornette's show to talk the details.

Cornette def took sole responsibility, and seemed proud of it like he was the ultimate wrestling historian, a pissing contest. What I really think happened is they were all in on it. Scott Hall has the best take on it so far - if it weren’t planned, Vince wouldn’t have the cameras continue to roll, cameras wouldn’t have close up shots of Bret spitting on Vince, he def wouldn’t allow WCW spelled out after one of his ppvs, and honestly, all parties came out better for it and if WCW had booked Bret correctly, he would’ve came out great from it, an ultimate Babyface up against the system, wwe can run with the Bret screwed Bret narrative, and Bret’s reasoning of he somehow knew the ref would be involved was a weird flimsy reason

Bruce Pritchard has never claimed to have known the screw job was going to happen. He was on creative at that point but thought the ending was going to be a run in DQ. He was in the Gorilla position waiting to give Owen and Davey their cue.
Cornette also didn’t know it was going to happen. However when they were spitballing ideas he did tell some old story of a guy getting screwed in similar fashion. Russo loved the idea but McMahon just listened. At the end of their meeting everyone thought DQ.
Russo is the only one of that group who tries to take credit for coming up with the screw job, but everyone there disputes that. The only people who knew before hand were McMahon, Jerry Briscoe, HBK and Hunter. Russo, JR, Pritchard, Cornette, Patterson, and even Slaughter who was ringside with Vince were intentionally kept in the dark in order for them to not get any heat from the boys.

But from Bret’s perspective, Cornette would have had absolutely nothing to do with the entire incident. Cornette only really dealt with Vince creatively on this issue, and at no time during the entire incident did he have a single sole interaction with Bret. So it sort of makes sense that Bret would say this, and I think it’s more of an honest mistake on his part.

Ffs...... I would've moved heaven and Earth to keep Bret in the promotion until March and booked him against Austin at Mania. Can you imagine Austin's elevation to the big big big time in Bret's hands? Their third big PPV match with Bret oozing confidence in promos because he's already 2 and 0 and jumping Austin repeatedly between the Rumble and Mania, then on the night they fight a loser leaves town match. Two such talents would cave the fucking roof in and shake the world, and Austin would've had a hell of a better start to his big time runs than the one he got off of Shawn pisspants Michaels.
Bret would've done Austin proud and gone to WCW like a boss, with his last appearance a massive main event. It would've done the WWF more good than what really happened. It would SURELY have done Austin a shit-ton more good, and Bret would've been better served, too.

I'm going to respectfully disagree here.
Now, I do take into account that Bret was poorly used in WCW and then got his career shortened by the mistimed Goldberg kick. But let's be honest, that kick could have happened at anytime, against anyone.
So about Austin, no, Austin would have been huge regardless. Yeah, Bret was a big star, but Austin was in there mixing it up with Mike Tyson. As famous as Bret had been... He ain't nearly the name Tyson was and still is.
Then you get to the fact that the Screwjob was basically the start of the Mr. McMahon character, which is still the highest drawing heel in the history WWE.
Lastly, how much money have been drawn just by talking about the Screwjob? Entire podcast hosts were elevated to instant millionaire status by talking about it. To this day, almost 30 years later, it is one of the most asked interview questions. If you could have an interview with just about any wrestling star of that area, one of the first questions are going to be "what did you know about the Screwjob?"
The Screwjob has probably made more money than any single event in wrestling history, die to its sheer longevity, it gave birth to the greatest heel of all time and that spawned arguably the greatest babyface of all time.
So no, I don't think any other timeline works out as well as this one.

@@jeremyzak654 he'd talked about it years before on the podcast and admitted it was his idea, it wasn't taking credit, it was being honest. There is a difference.

I haven’t listened to Prichard’s podcast for a couple years now, but has he changed his stance about the screw job? For the longest time he’s claimed to know nothing about it and was upset that he was completely left in the dark

Kevin Nash is someone whose interviews have kinda grown over the years. Its like he was just a superstar, and this happened and that happened, and each time he talks about a subject, its turned into something like "I told Vince do something and he did it" and "I told Eric how we needed to do things" and "I just said this is how its gonna be done"... wrestlers with podcasts are still in character and still exaggerating their role in things. (Of course they take credit for success, but deny killing WCW). Kevin Nash is one of the people that killed WCW and he's just an arrogant over-rated piece of garbage that stood outside the ring when Hogan turned on Savage, and then refused to lose for 2 years paying himself more than the company was worth. Of course he won't admit to that but it was Nash and the two NWOs self-indulgent over-paid refuse to lose and keep all the midcarders down mindset that let WCW go to waste.

If Bret knows so much about who was in on it and who wasn’t. Then why did he even get put in the sharpshooter?

    • @AFanOfYouTube-eh2cn

Because he didn’t know it would end there since the original plan was he would reverse the move on hbk and dx and the hart foundation would cause a double dq. You can watch the finish. He grabbed hbk by the leg and went to reverse it and the bell rang

Bruce didn't even know the Screw job was happening and I've never heard Bruce take credit for it. It's sad that Brett is still this Bitter because he's on my Mt. Rushmore of wrestlers. It also seems he's just as two-faced as the next man. You'll see him hugging and reminiscing with someone that in 2hrs from then, he's going to bury. Just Sad all around

Bret’s got his wires crossed. Prichard say he wasn’t involved. Cornette said he had only discussed a double-cross, not that he told Vince to do it, the only one who claims credit is ole Vinny Ru over there. Maybe Bret should learn to listen before he gets all on his bitter tangents.

What? Bruce, Cornette, and Russo aren't the only people who worked for the company. This is such a silly comment. Some people are so obsessed with "gotcha moments" that they delude themselves into saying some dumb stuff. It's not like Bret ever claimed this either; he's just put the blame solely on Vince. (I think even on Triple H, since Shawn and I think Vince have said he was the one who came up with the idea.)

For my money, Bret is the best to ever do it, but it's not real, it's fake and the guy that owns the company tells you you're dropping the belt to someone, you're dropping the belt. Bret didn't complain when Vince put the belt on him, so he shouldn't have been such a diva when it came to dropping it. Flair didn't have a hissy fit when he was asked to drop it to Bret. The Hit Man is my favorite wrestler of all time, but he completely out of order when it came to dropping the belt.
