Can I pick just one favorite? No, no I cannot. Here's a few:
Favorite non fiction: Know My Name by Chanel Miller. This book changed me fundamentally as a human being. As a survivor of SA who works with child survivors of SA, this meant more to me than I can even put into words. This book gave me renewed vision for my work and for my personal healing. Chanel calls out the cruelties of the legal system while still emphasizing the importance of individual kindnesses from professionals and friends and family. Truly, this book made me a better person and helped me let go of so much pain that I couldn't put into words but Chanel could.
Favorite middle grade: The Last Mapmaker by Christina Henry. Such an enchanting read, really gave me the same feelings from when I first fell in love with reading (and who doesn't want that). I was almost mad at myself for reading this all in one sitting because it was just so charming and adventurous and full of heart.
Favorite thriller: The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. A mystery thriller where a parent-child relationship is front and center and remains the priority for the entire book. I love to see it. If any book in this genre would earn a "chef's kiss" from me, it's this little nugget. I can't emphasize enough that if you are tired of thrillers no character development or emotional depth, this one is for you.
Favorite historical fiction: I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys. Such an interesting slice of history to inspect through this story. I've never really heard of any other fiction books focusing on the Red Scare from the side of those under Soviet occupation. This book is heartbreaking and eye opening. Stories build empathy and this story gave me new considerations looking back through history at "the bad guys" (according to my US public school education), which is a journey I'm constantly on.
Favorite lit fic: Beartown by Fredrik Backman. This little motherf***er. My heart is just torn to shreds by every book. This was again very impactful for me as a SA survivor/advocate in evaluating how communities react to disclosures of SA. The best way I can describe this book is "absolutely human". Raw, infuriating, uplifting, soul shattering and life changing.

Omg, Half a Soul was my #1 of the year. I loved it so so much. I expected to like it but I didn't expect for it to be so emotional and relatable. Dora and Elias make my heart swell, I LOVE THEM! SO ICONIC! 💚
My #2 was The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec 💙
I feel like you would really like the Wraith King series by Grace Draven. Book 1 is called Radiance and I would say it's a fairly low stakes story but the series progresses into a deeper and darker plot, which I think is good for someone who doesn't read a lot of adult fantasy. The plot is really interesting and the characters are so, so amazing. Book 1 was my fave then book 3 ended up beating it out a little bit for me and was def in my top 10 🖤
