The Breen moment at 2:43 is just so simple and yet so effective. The way he says “Gordon Freeman” has so many layers, it’s an exclamation of surprise to see him again, a confirmation of who he is seeing but also the inflection in his voice of fear, both of what he knows Gordon is capable of but what this means is coming. Breen faced an invasion of an entire race that subjugated earth in seven hours and didn’t really care…BUT he fears Gordon Freeman as just one man
One of my favorite game intros of all time. It gets my heart pounding and blood pumping as soon as Gordon is rising up in the teleporter and you hear that loud scratching cord that immediately makes you feel anxious. And when the advisor and Dr Breen both look at Gordon at the same time, it immediately informs you that the shit is about to hit the freaking fan. Phenomenal.
2:08 In Half Life Alyx, we see that North America is completely crossed off on a globe. North America was essentially ground zero of the resonance cascade, which means it probably suffered the most out of anywhere on the planet. I like to think this little shot of this unknown wasteland area, with various remnants of civilization, is a part of what's left of North America.
let's also add onto that with what happened to black mesa, but only if you count blue shift and opposing forces as canon, in opposing forces you disarm a nuke at one point, you then go through a door that locks behind you which has a window to where the nuke was, and gman is arming it, and you can't go back and stop him, later in the ending cutscene with gman, black mesa explodes, most likely due to the nuke from gman, the tripmines all over the place, and that huge rocket missile thing gordon has to get around with tripmines attached, the amount of radiation that would cause would be insane, and it would have a huge blast radius, but that's not all, as both it being ground zero for the resonance cascade, as well as the fact that it's the ground zero for the seven hour war, in which the combine first invade and take over the world in just 7 hours, and considering the fact that we've seen how the combine deals with rebel hideouts (see ravenholm for an example), the fact that america, a place known for people with free speech, getting into stupid arguments, resisting a lot of things, fighting, owning guns, well let's just say they would probably view america as rebels or at least as a threat, and since they had just gotten to earth and didn't know the resonance cascade or that xen invaded, they wouldn't have headcrab pods, and if they had just taken over earth as a planet, why not use the previous governments explosive armaments to avoid wasting their own? either that, or maybe something that we will eventually see
no route kanal, no water hazard, likely no ravenholm or anything after that. gordon stays at black mesa east as a scientist, not getting much done you gotta admit, if it wasnt for lamarr, gordon wouldnt do all the shit that made the combine crumble.
Securitron B Well he does not come along with Gordon, but it is quite possible Lamarr (the pet) teleports around City 17 just like Gordon and then teleports back to doctor Kleiner. Because when Gordon gets back from Nova Prospekt Lamarr can be seen safe and sound.
@@fleadsy2572 it's not, black Mesa was in New Mexico. America was mostly wiped out after the seven hour war and most civilians moved to eastern Europe. This is where city 17 is set, somewhere in eastern Europe
I just occurred to me the reason Barney is snarky about Freeman's degree and about having to pull the switch is probably that he's been flipping teleporter switches since The Black Mesa Incident, and he finally gets the chance to call someone else the lab monkey
The fact the entire apocalypse level scenario of Half Life 2 and its Episodes all happens merely because of this small error with Lamarr, it gives me goosebumps. Everything that happens in City 17 suddenly is all just because of a simple 2 second interaction that wasn't even supposed to happen in the first place. The entire city erupts into absolute chaos like in Follow Freeman and Anti Citizen One all because of this small little scene.
