"Carbon stars with ancient satellites colonized by sentient fungi. Gas giants inhabited by vast meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where the dimensions intersect. Impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary. " - Dr. Wallace Breen
At 3:27-3:40 comes the single most important line in the entire game, in my opinion. Breen is basically saying that he knows that the G-man controls Gordon and that the G-man works for anybody that needs him. The G-man himself confirms it at the end of the game when he tells Gordon that he has recieved "some interesting offers for his services". It raises more questions than it answers in terms of how much Breen really knows and about the true nature of the G-man. It says so much with so few words that I'm scratching my head to what it all could mean.
Marc Laidlaw recently released a vignette called "Nihilanth" on his website that he wrote in 1998. It more or less suggests that the G-Man is a part of a super-intelligent race who's goal is to destroy their rivals by making them fight each other and by using pawns to do their dirty work. Humanity became the "G-Men's" rivals the moment they had success in portal technology. This is why the G-Man brought the Xen crystal to initiate the resonance cascade, he wanted to force a confrontation between humanity and Xen and after humanity unexpectedly won they somehow orchestrated the Combine invasion for round 2 (whilst helping humanity a bit since the Combine greatly outmatch Earth, he wants as much damage done to both rivals as possible). The fact that the Combine "capture" him in HL:Alyx proves to me that he is not with them and is from some third party.
And don't forget 5:35-5:45 The mention of Breen needing a "host body" while talking to an Advisor. I believe that the Advisor that killed Eli was Dr. Breen in a host body. Would make sense considering the teleport failed.
@@GIJew Marc Laidlaw stated in another post he made (titled Epistle 3, check it out) that Breen's host body was a giant miserable slug with kind of a human face, to have been encountered as the leader of a rogue faction of Combine in Episode 3.
I also get a weird feeling that Mossman is referencing the G-man when she says, “Don’t struggle; until he has you where he wants you, there’s nothing you can do.” Lore wise I don’t know if she’d even be aware of him... it just feels like her phrasing is weirdly ambiguous and profound.
It also proves that the G-Man is against the Combine and not with them. This is why the G-Man brought the Xen crystal to initiate the resonance cascade, he wanted to force a confrontation between humanity and Xen and then later humanity and the Combine (whilst helping humanity a bit since the Combine greatly outmatch them, he wants as much damage done to both rivals as possible).
"Oh, its hardly the worst. Though, you might find that hard to believe once you get there." That line always gives me chills. The best books, movies, and games are not the ones that explain everything, but rather leave the the viewer to fill in the blanks with their own imagination. What indescribable and terrible landscape await them on the other side - yet somehow, is not the worst place Breen could send them to - we can only imagine.
Considering what the Combine have already shown they can do on earth, what with Combine Stalkers as an example, we can definitely get a small idea as for the worst the Combine could do to them...

My thoughts exactly. That line got me thinking. And to also answer @gcHK47, we indeed were shown that some people in the series do know about the G-man. But here we see that Dr. Breen knows about Freeman's "contract". We know that the G-Man and Dr. Breen made some negotiations which involved the sample GG-3883 that originated the Resonance Cascade. But who's to say that's the only thing they negotiated? Makes you think that maybe all series events prior to HL2 were previously orchestrated. Maybe they both knew that Gordon was the perfect man to trigger all the events that would lead to the Combine conquering of planet Earth. The Combine's regime fits well within Breen's ideals. People usually say that Breen isn't evil, he was just trying to survive. But think about it. He's a scientist. He believes in progress of humanity above everything else. And, considering our own history, humanity prospects of evolution weren't that great to the eyes of a man like Breen. He even dedicates a whole Breencast talking about how Instinct is the worst enemy of humanity. But if you could previously orchestrate everything so that, in the end, you just "pretended" to negotiate Earth surrendering to the Combine... That would put Breen at the top of the food chain so to speak. He can practically conduct humanity's evolution from where he stands. For a lunatic scientist, it's a wet dream come true. For Breen, the Combine are indeed Benefactors. They are indeed helping the species evolving. From his point of view. Also that's another thing. It was never fully explained how exactly Earth surrendered. Quoting from the Half-Life wiki here: "The Combine launches an assault on Earth. Earth governments and the United Nations enter into war against them. The Seven Hour War occurs. Finally, Earth surrenders to the Combine and Wallace Breen, former Black Mesa Administrator, is appointed Earth Administrator." So, from all leaders, from all people on Earth, The Combine will appoint Breen practically out of nowhere? Very convenient if you ask me. Everything was already set. How it actually happened, we don't know. Finally, and I apologize for the long comment, we have reasons to believe that Breen and the G-Man may have planned things this far ahead. But I think that's where their business relationship ended. The G-Man used Breen, leading the latter to believe that their agendas were the same. We don't know if they met after the Black Mesa incident. But judging from Breen's reaction in the second chapter of HL2 when he sees Gordon... he wasn't expecting it. Breen thought Gordon had fulfilled his purpose. That's where G-Man's true agenda starts I think. One which isn't clear. And probably never will be.
“You are man... he is not... he waits for you” “We are all slaves” -Nihilanth Seriously though, how scary is that, you fight through a literal alien army, Make it into their homeworld, seeing their tehnological advantage, the capability of making interstellar portals and shit, then you find out most of the grunts you’ve been fighting are actually slaves, so you continue exploring this “world” and in the end you find the mastermind behind it all, a god-like being. And what he tells you... that he is a slave... that is fucking terrifying. And the fact that he knew about G-man means he probably DID make a deal with him. My theory is that G-man’s purpose was to bring the Combine to Earth. His plan was simple. Make Earth seem like it’s technologically advanced enough so it could be considered a threat to the Combine. But Nihilanth is already a slave to the Combine. He wouldn’t want to help the Combine though, since he considers himself a slave, not an ally. So G-man has a plan. Make Nihilanth think that his forces will crush Earth’s forces and destroy all Black Mesa research. that way Earth will be of no interest to the Combine. However, he relies on one Free man to do the darker part of his plan... to kill Nihilanth. That way Earth and it’s population is seen as a massive fucking problem to the Combine. Throughout the bossfight with Nihilanth, he tries to communicate with Freeman, to make him realize that he is the biggest, dumbest pawn in this entire mess. But he doesn’t listen, and Nihilanth isn’t strong enough to survive, to save Earth. Choosing to stay in the tram in the end is probably the good ending. Since after that, G-man is probably only after one thing. Sending more combine to earth... and killing Eli, one of the most respected resistance leaders, one of the only remaining people that worked at Black Mesa... and one of the other two men, that know about the G-man.
You got some things wrong, for starters Xen is not Nihilanth homeworld, It where he ran to escape from the combine. Nihilanth was a slave and you can see he was victim of enhancement with the same kind of metal/style the combine use plus some scaring tissue and stiches in his body. Nihilanth says in one of his lines that he is the last of his kind (so the combine killed all of his species). All the Vaurtigauns are slaves to Nihilanth as well as every other being, Vortigauns even mention in HL2 something like never ever experiencing freedom they just changed masters (to now the combine). This is even scarrier that what you just described, because all these tecno-organic tecnology and grunts and weapons far superior to earth were still no match to the combine so what hopes do we have? The only thing the combine Don't have: Intra Universe teleportation, this is literally the tecnology that allows to conquer stars and the combine don't have it, this alone boosts humans to a level that can rival with them. If in Hl3 Alyx didn't destroy the borealis we would have the perfect intra Universe teleportation system wich would mean that if anything we could at least escape from Earth, BUT also means that we could build a few spaceships and a few weapons and machines based on this tecnology and we would be literaly unstopable to the combine. This is exactly why instead of using our genes/bodies to create synths like they do to every other being they enslave they want to exterminate us this alone says a lot about what is happening in the Combine Empire regarding Earth
G-man manipulated them out of the room the moment Breen mentioned him, just like he killed Ellie when he mentioned him to Freeman, or how he put Shepperd into stasis so he doesn't talk. It is not a coinsidence, it's meant to keep everyone on a short leash regarding his employers.
No, I think he is describing a planet like Jupiter in wich a storm (meteriological event) is satient somehow. A dyson shpere is a really big aparatus and the combine being limited to the region near the Dimetional portal opening means they only have a few planets/asteroids of material at a time with each conquering to have materials to build a dyson shpere. They most likely only have 1 in their homeworld or 2 : 1 in their homeworld and the 2nd on an combine colony wich could be used like a barrier making sure nothing but that place connects to their homeworld and this could be the place Gordon sees in the Epislte story, a place where they store all the military and process all the resources from the empire
He was talking about vast worlds inhabited by sentient fungi. As the guy said above meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membrane where the dimensions intersect
Eli: "Go ahead, Breen! If that's the worst you can do send us both through your portal!" Alyx: "Uhhhh whoah dad haha hold on a second... you know I kinda like this dimension, you know..."
I always wonder what Eli would have said had Gordon not been carted in the room at that moment. Would love to hear how the rest of that conversation went cuz the concepts Breen was talking about were fascinating
@@large-turkeybut it could be Breen seizing power with the Combine's help and and manipulating human race into beliving that he seved them, no one knows
I like how in the breencasts he always calls combine "our benefactors" or "universal union" and calls "small minded" those who call it "combine", yet here at 1:48 he casually says combine
That's because universal union is a descriptor of the Combine rather than a substitute name for it. Our Benefactors is just a formal way of referring to them and isn't their name either
All this years I never noticed the detail in Judith first words "Until you are where he wants to,there is nothing you can do", I always thought this was asociated with Breen ,however maybe not? It is all big manipulation game ,it seems
Why you say shit as facts? We dont know If that Is true and Is probably that Breen host will be part of a third game, as was always hinted by the creators before.
Breen is... an interesting character. I realize that the game does it's best to depict him as the villain, not *a* villain but *the* Villain. But... faced with the annihilation of the human species... how much choice did he really have? In the end of the day he did what he thought was right. Not Good or Evil, but right. He knows what the Universal Union is capable of and I'm sure it's still but a fraction of the true scope. Eli, Alyx, all the Rebels, all the Scientist, every remaining human and even Gordon do not. It's easy to speak of "freedom" and "liberation" and "fighting the good fight", when you are not aware of the alternatives. Or their consequences.
Well I suppose it'd be convenient if we disregarded any and all loyalty and connection to a resistance, which is percisely what Breen did. He saved humanity by surrendering planet earth, but he also betrayed humanity itself and became ruler of Earth, sidetracked and amazed by the Combine's power and wanting to be a part of it. He could've stayed loyal to humanity and would've kept a normal position and kept himself away from power, but instead seeing the great chances he had with the Combine and ruling fucking Earth itself, of course he chose to rule his very planet.
@@Pengd That is what I was thinking. He saved the earth by surrendering. Similar happened in Portal 2, at Glados's last test chamber, she would deactivate the bridge, but Wheatley did cut off the power, saving you.

That's where G-Man's true agenda starts I think. One which isn't clear. And probably never will be.
“You are man... he is not... he waits for you”
“We are all slaves”
-Nihilanth
Seriously though, how scary is that, you fight through a literal alien army,
Make it into their homeworld, seeing their tehnological advantage, the capability of making interstellar portals and shit, then you find out most of the grunts you’ve been fighting are actually slaves, so you continue exploring this “world” and in the end you find the mastermind behind it all, a god-like being.
After HL:Alyx, we can now say that Breen definitely knew about G-Man.
Just now have I realized that he’s wearing a Steve Jobs collar
G-man manipulated them out of the room the moment Breen mentioned him, just like he killed Ellie when he mentioned him to Freeman, or how he put Shepperd into stasis so he doesn't talk. It is not a coinsidence, it's meant to keep everyone on a short leash regarding his employers.
You mean a turtle neck?
@@limitess9539what? No the clothes are just modeled after the irl model, they js put his clothes as the clothes that his model regularly wears.

“It’s safer here” my ass. Lmao
Considering the state of the world outside the city, it is indeed safer lmao
The shock of breen's face when he realizes that Gordon doesn't talk.
What breen is telling in the start about gas giants and dimensions..
@@ryshed4365 He also said he couldn't describe it fully using our limited vocabulary
I'm pretty sure he's talking about xen
@@twistedkarma9574 probably combine's homeworld
As far as cutscenes go, this ages very well.
Eli: "Go ahead, Breen! If that's the worst you can do send us both through your portal!"
Alyx: "Uhhhh whoah dad haha hold on a second... you know I kinda like this dimension, you know..."
I'm watching this side by side with the scene in Bioshock Infinite where Elizabeth and Comstock finally meet.

It’s crazy how expressive these faces are still to this day.
I just like how Dr Breen says "You fool! No!"
I just love his laugh. 1:51
I just love so much the way Mossman confronts Dr Breen xD
I'm expecting Freeman's Mind to take the offer seriously
And then alyx and eli got brutaly melded to a cold metal wall or some shit
I love how she can't believe Gordon was captured
He sounds too happy when he sees the gravity gun thingamajig
I always wonder what Eli would have said had Gordon not been carted in the room at that moment. Would love to hear how the rest of that conversation went cuz the concepts Breen was talking about were fascinating
I can't believe Dr. Breen is the administrator of Black Mesa and he's forcefully rush the science team to make resonance cascade.
3:14 Absolutely awesome line
I wish it gave a choice to work with the combine I sure know what I would choose
For a villain, has the most soothing voice I have ever heard
Nah, he ain't no Villain. He was able to convince the Combine not to wipe out humanity, he's the true unsung hero of HL2

Yeah , je does look like 'em
I'll miss this series.

jokes on you, It's back now
hearing breen go "oh shit" actually made me laugh
What I’ve seen is also beyond words, Breen: Genocide, indescribable evil
I like how in the breencasts he always calls combine "our benefactors" or "universal union" and calls "small minded" those who call it "combine", yet here at 1:48 he casually says combine
That's because universal union is a descriptor of the Combine rather than a substitute name for it. Our Benefactors is just a formal way of referring to them and isn't their name either
”You fool!!! Watch out! Hes gonna- NO”
kid: half life??? hahahha!!! this is garrys mod!!!
It is Half Life kid. If you want play Gmod. You need Half Life to install.
hes joking
Meathead615 1st off he was joking, second of all no you don’t you can play gmod without half-life 2 mounted.
@@frazza5503 you need HL2 for like 60 percent of the maps tho. ( the good maps )

my gordon was literally smiling ear to ear when he saw breen cuz he knew what was gonna happen to him
this fool is awesome
All this years I never noticed the detail in Judith first words
"Until you are where he wants to,there is nothing you can do", I always thought this was asociated with Breen ,however maybe not?
It is all big manipulation game ,it seems
The animations are so fucking good for a 2004 game. HL2 truly was a game changer.
it feels so weird seeing someone running half life 2 of all things at an FPS lower than 25-30, but then again this video came out like 10 years ago
Has anyone ever noticed that the prisoner pod that Gordon Freeman is in is not attached to anything until it gets picked up by the breen arm?
after breen death, he was added to that host body when the advisor say it to him, and now he is that advisor who killed eli
Why you say shit as facts? We dont know If that Is true and Is probably that Breen host will be part of a third game, as was always hinted by the creators before.
Gordon freeman is talking you can’t hear him
Damn you Valve, damn you!
1:22 Wassiz? Uhpudditovrthe.
I like how he wasn’t really mean to Judith, sure he made some faces, but he wasn’t insulting her or anything.
Рекомендации ютуба очень загадочная вещь
Breen is... an interesting character.
Eli: Breayn
Alyx: Buh-reen
Gordon: Breen
Gordon: ...
This would've been a good joke if you made Gordon silent, but you didn't for some reason
I love the facial animations
Well well
Holy shit you respawn

4:30 NO
So he really does know about G-man
this scene makes me goosebumps..
i find this dude's voice really funny.
i would have betrayed the resistance and join forces with this smart man
Well I suppose it'd be convenient if we disregarded any and all loyalty and connection to a resistance, which is percisely what Breen did.
Similar happened in Portal 2, at Glados's last test chamber, she would deactivate the bridge, but Wheatley did cut off the power, saving you.
and get turned into a stalker, it's a terrific idea!

weirdly enough everyone talks about g-man as if he is the bad guy, like on example the nihilanth did, and or dr breen is talking smack about him in this video, maybe that has something to do with the fact that gman might send an apocalypse onto freeman?
1:23 lol

Take that back right now
“Thought you were dead!”
Half-life: “My death was greatly exaggerated.”
I never understood the bargain they were supposed to make with the combine
keep eli alive so he can continue to research intra-universal portal technology at the cost of disbanding the resistance
