The older Hobbit animated film that you mentioned is short, and very weird. You actually find it on RUclips. It's worth finding cause it's so bad and strange.
This was so much fun! The Rankin-Bass movies were how I first came across Tolkien (I also had the LP from ROTK, if I remember right) so they hold a special place in my heart even if there are some... questionable... choices in both of them.
in Fellowship of the Ring the Balrog is described as having the appearance of wings twice. I misremembered that they sang "the road goes ever on" (it's not the same lyrics as in the book). the Hobbit animated movie (and the Return of the King) are far, far superior to the theatrical "Lord of the Rings" animated film (though it influenced Peter Jackson's version in several places). also, other than the hilarious dinner party in the first movie, the Peter Jackson treatments of the Hobbit were inferior to this animated treatment!
