- Often called the Beyoncé of the 1920s, Josephine Baker lived a dozen lives in her time on earth. The African American singer made France her home, rising to stardom for her legendary dance moves, sultry voice, and vaudeville humor. But why doesn’t history talk more about the “Black Pearl” of Paris? From her maneater reputation to her time as a secret agent, it's high time to revisit the jaw-dropping life of Josephine Baker.

She's astounding! She did all this in a backdrop of some of the worst times and as a black woman . Nothing short of a miracle ❤Amazing woman
So true. Beonce is nothing near Ms. Baker .
There is no comparison between Josephine Baker and Beyoncé, they are both entertainers of their own particular time. Miss Baker had to fight harder because of the time she lived in
Miss Baker deeply cared about children, civil rights, peace and inclusion. Beyonce Knowles spends her life looking in a mirror and loving what she sees.

@@valeriew4833 Versus Josephine of *all time* . Although, to be fair, the comparison was probably made for a younger audience. But for those of us who've experienced decades of great artists since Josephine, Beyonce doesn't measure up.
Beyonce wore a banana skirt and at 1st she DENIED it was in homage to Josephine.. either way she didn't do it justice. Also, these 1920s (hundred years ago) clips of Josephine are still really compelling whereas, Beyonce is boring now. Her silver horse can't change that.

Exactly. Sounds like she was a great mother.
She was bi Sexual as well.
Clickbait
so it was clickbaits??? I cant.
What separates Josephine from women entertainers of this era is she never had a father or talent agency guiding her career and opening doors for her. She was a black woman that relied on her talent and determination to succeed. We will never really know all the guttural struggles and sacrifices that she made

"The day I no longer go on stage will be the day I die."
~ Josephine Baker (1906-1975), American-born French singer, dancer, activist, and French Resistance agent.
She died one or two days after her last performance at the, I believe, Olympia music hall in Paris.
At what age?
"I had to succeed. I would never stop trying, never. A violinist 🎻 had his violin, a painter, his palette. All I had was myself. I was the instrument that I must play."

Beautiful tribute to Josephine Baker. Also, I never knew what Princess Grace of Monaco did for Mrs. Josephine Baker. RIP Both Ladies.
It's veey sad that she had married as a child at 13, that she was homeless as a child, that her mother was never impressed, and that she faced so much racism while all she wanted to do was entertain. It's amazing how she helped in political efforts in such a tumultuous time. She forged a new life overseas as well. It's unimaginable to think about some 😢 of the things she lived through as a woman of color in a segregated entertainment world at the time.
I had no idea her and Grace Kelly were friends! What a beautiful thing. Both were ahead of their time.

*sigh*. I'm starting to pass on any video using click bait messaging, but still and despite that, this was a good doc. and I fell in love with that smile 😇! Please reconsider the titles in future docs. Really.
I don't really see how there was anything concealed about the song "J'ai Deux Amours" (I Have Two Loves.) In the next verse she tells, quite clearly what her 2 loves are : My Country and Paris, (Mon Pays et Paris.) Call me unimaginative but I do not detect any other *wink wink* subtext.
Beyoncé isn't an icon. She's a performer. Show me anything she's done for the world in ANY way outside of making money off entertaining. Anything. Even one act of humanity.

Lol, talk about it, but you can’t tell the black community anything, they will not see it.
In 1972, whilst in a theatre in Munich, German, Baker,66 descended the steps "please help me down" Baker asked Donna Summer, 21 (book "Ordinary Girl The Journey" Ch. 4 pp 69-70)
Diana Ross Met Josephine Baker.
Madame Diana Ross:
"Josephine came stood in front of me, put her fingers into my hair and pulled hard, I guess she wanted to see if i was wearing a wig".❤
I see her in her uniform with outstanding French medals and a British medal for aiding in the rescue of British flyers but not so much as one little American medal to wear.
She's black. Enough said
I love where she said the rights of humanity
Did I miss the twisted family secret? Title not quite accurate.

Beyonce doesn't compare to Josephine Baker. What BS!
Exactly ❤
WELL SAID!
Hollywood elite helping the Resistance and risking her life? Not likely . JB was certainly not a narcissist. Almost child like in her joy and the way she stood up for what she believed, a true fighter ! Hardly fair to compare her with someone who , well, only cares about herself. BS indeed !
What is so great about Josephine Baker? She couldn't sing.
Agree
France should have helped Josephine convert her chateau into an orphanage since Josephine loved children. That would have been a great way for France to repay her for her service during WWII.
I read a book about her role in the french resistance during world war 2....she was brave
She made way for the rest of us she was a brave soul

She had to leave the US to become successful, she's was very brave to to that, especially back then.

Beyonce is nothing but trite, garbage sprinkled with hints of witchcraft to attract the cokehead and tweaker crowd.
She walked so that Whitney Houston could make that first album.

She was fearless. Born in 1950, I was oblivious to the whole segregation thing. I think children are like that. It is deplorable to me that black performers could not stay in the same hotel in which they performed. Absolutely, outrageous.
What a woman!
Beyonce's confidence is derivative - but Josephine is most definitely an original - amazing style, elegance, humour and a terrific smile - so sorry - no comparison Queen Bey!
She's not a Queen to each their own I guess

I was looking for this comment . They need to change the title " Twisted secrets " ? smh
Wow what a legend thanks for sharing her story
I love her. I didn't know how unacceptable she had been treated. What a beautiful woman and soul. So ahead of her time. Sad that she wasn't appreciated and adored as she deserved during her time.
The reason why she went to Paris because of discrimination, she couldn’t be a star in the us
In those days, if one was darker than the color of a brown paper bag, one did not work!
Unreal!
Comparing Josephine Baker with Beyonce is an insult to Josephine Baker. 100 years from now the World will still remember Josephine Baker . They will not remember who Beyonce were .
Man, the 1920's were such a wild and free time period, where one could get up to about anything they desired. It can be seen in the dance moves of The Charleston, and other dances as well. Women were finally equal to men and they let them know it. That is partly what spawned The Charleston, after all. Booze and 'substances' could be had very easily, and were, by most. Everyone was having a ball and "kicking the gong around", if you know what that means. I certainly do. My grandmother told me about her life as young flapper in the early to mid 1920's. That woman had some stories, and she definitely sowed her wild oats and got up to all kinds of adventures. I am incredibly proud of her, for being such a rebel long before it was fashionable, if it ever was. I certainly know where I get it from. I always thought that it was Josephine Baker, who personified the 1920's, totally. Even though she chose to live in France, she was well loved here in the states too. Her little spit-curls and those beautiful, jewel like, kohl lined eyes! Like the jewels of Ethiopia, or something just as stunning and gorgeous. And, she had a great sense of humour. I may be a gay male, but I can appreciate a gorgeous and beautiful woman like Josephine Baker! Indeed, she was more than amazing. She was also ahead of her time, and I personally love that.
Well that was a really nice tribute to her

Something about the way she raised her kids. One said she "wanted not a child but a doll." Another, kinder perhaps, said "She was a great artist and she was our mother. Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect." She had a difficult childhood herself.
