I had the extreme privilege of meeting the great Pearl Bailey. It was 1968 and I was ten years-old. My grandfather who was in show business introduced me to her and I was just thrilled! I knew who she was and imagine my joy in meeting this legendary actress and singer. She was so sweet and couldn’t have been nicer. Great memories. ❤
I enjoyed the narration of Ms. Pearl Bailey's Life!! I did not hear anything scandalous ....I only heard the story of another African American woman who lived the life she chose with courage, enthusiasm and LOVE with a message you can do anything you put your mind to and never give in or give up!!👍🏾👍🏾😊💯. "A Phenomenal Woman!"
My partner saw Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway on Broadway in Hello Dolly. We’re both theater snobs and have seen a lot of plays. He still says this is the best show he’s ever seen.
I’m heartbroken and sorry that this great, talented lovely lady and the loves of her life ended more or less when she did. A legend never dies but continues with each new generation that are lucky enough to find her star.
A true legend with the most beautiful smile and countenance. Her inner light brightened the lives of many including many military personnel when she was part of the USO.. Her eyes even twinkled when she smiled.
I met Pearl Bailey in a May Company department store when I worked there in the 1970s. She was talking to a girlfriend on their way out of the beauty shop on the second floor. Not wishing to interrupt her, I just gave her a small wave, and she did the same, still talking with her friend. So glad I didn't act the pushy guy.
I worked in a Russian gift shop at the 1967 World’s Fair in Montreal. Pear Bailey came into the shop and created quite the stir! She was flamboyant and larger than life, at least to my teenage eyes. Couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family about it.
I just loved her. She had the most beautiful smile and she didn’t let anyone walk over her. I loved that about her so much. She spoked her mind and you all ways knew what she stood for. She was so full of love. What a great lady with so much talent that God gave her. She used that talent so well. Your a angel now Pearl 🙏🏼🙏🏼😇😇😇
A beautiful voice her, Etta James, and Ella Fitzgerald really put such feeling and emotion into what they sing and they always sound just as good live as they do recorded.
WAS THAT ELLA FITZGERALD OR PEAL BAILEY WHO DID THAT "IS IT LIVE, OR IS IT 🙄🙄MEMOREX COMMERICAL. WAY BACK IN THE DAY? DO U REMEMBER WHICH ONE IT WAS?🤔🤔
Hard start to her life that didn't discourage her , cause her to stumble in reaching her goals or make her embittered. Good also to hear that she didn't succumb to drug or alcohol addiction like so many entertainers and movie stars do. Had a happier and better life once she found the right partner. She was an icon and a good example of a well-grounded, healthy outlook personality.

We are so proud of our Newport News native Mrs Pearl Bailey we have a wonderful Library in her name and we also have the pleasure of being the birth place of Mrs Ella Fitzgerald and Allen Iverson and Aaron Brooks and Michael Vick.
Pearl Bailey, her first name says, she was definitely a black pearl very unique and precious. She definitely had one hell of a life and I am so happy that things worked out well for her and she found happiness in the end. She was a very strong black woman the circumstances she had gone through would be enough to crush anyone's dreams and spirit. God bless you Pearl may you rest in peace, when I die I will be happy to be in heaven in your presence to hear you sing again.
I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME TO GIVE US ALL, A LOOK INT PEARL BAILEY'S LIFE, HER BEAUTY, HER INTELLECT, HER CHALLENGES, HER MARRIAGES, LOOKING FOR TRUE LOVE AND NEVER GIVING UP....HER NAME SUITES HER "PEARL" THAT'S HOW PRECIOUS SHE WAS. I AM ALSO PROUD OF HER, THAT SHE WAS WISE ENOUGH TO IGNORE, IGNORANT STATEMENTS MADE ABOUT HER, WHEN IT CAME TO THE MARCH. YOU GIVE YOUR GIFTS TO LIFE ONE STEP AND ONE DAY AT A TIME. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL QUOTATION ..I WONDER IF SHE WOULDN'T MIND SOMEONE BORROWS THIS STATEMENT FILLED WITH WISDOM AND TRUE LOVE. WHO CAN RESIST SUCH A GIFT TO US ALL...THANK YOU
I saw this amazing beautiful singer on TV and fell in love. I had such a crush on Pearl Bailey that anything she was in I watched. I loved and adore her smile. She was gorgeous and I was thrown by her voice. May she continue to rest in peace.
Although the title is very misleading and some of the pronunciations are incorrect (i.e. Porgy)😊, I found this video very interesting and informative. When I was a little girl, I and my parents saw Pearl Bailey at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Va. She did a stage revival of Hello Dolly! I enjoyed her as an entertainer and can appreciate the sacrifices and accomplishments that she made. 🕊
OMG I recall her coming to TV and I wondered where this dynamic talent was hidden. She was magnetic and dynamic. I thought she was dynamite. . She was something special.
Excellent presentation...I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Bailey at the Shubert where she starred in Hello Dolly, and performed in Atlantic City, NJ...she was larger than life. RIP.
Back in the 1970s on a beautiful spring evening, I saw Pearl and Louie Bellson strolling down the street in New York City arm in arm . It was obvious that they were deeply in love from the way they looked into each others eyes, and as they held on to one another. That night, they were the most gorgeous couple on the Upper Eastside.
I had the good fortune to see her perform "Hello Dolly" live on stage in Boston. She was phenomenal. During her performance, she spotted a Jewish family sitting in a box off to the side of the stage. Because of the age of the young boy with them, she correctly guessed he was celebrating his bar mitzvah. She asked him if he wanted to come onstage and do a number with "Ol' Pearl." Grinning from ear to ear, he nodded Yes. He was escorted down onto the stage with her, and they did a soft shoe routine, while his family members had their cameras clicking away. Then he got to make a bow to the audience which was cheering and clapping madly. There was a baseball game going on in Boston that Saturday, and there were men in the audience who had their transistor radios up to their ears, but kept their eyes on Pearl's performance. The impression was that their wives had probably dragged them to the performance and they were trying to comply while keeping their attention on the game simultaneously. Pearl was at the top of a stage staircase and descended singing the show's title song. But when she got to the bottom of the staircase, she signaled to the orchestra in the pit below to stop playing. She turned to the audience and said, "I might as well put you out of your misery. The score is (whatever it was between the Boston Red Sox and whomever they were playing)... All bases are loaded. Let's bring the Sox onto home plate." The audience SCREAMED with delight, stamping their feet and clapping. She showed them that she was aware of the importance of the game to the men, and they LOVED her giving them her attention. Then she said, "Now I am going to go back up the staircase and start all over again." She walked back up the long staircase and re-started singing "Hello Dolly" song, descending the staircase with their FULL attention this time. The audience was still screaming with delight and clapping. This was a genius move on her part. There she had been standing at the top of the stars making her grand entrance, and men were leaning forward in their seats with radios up against their ears. Their attention was OBVIOUSLY divided. She wasn't going to have a PARTIALLY-attentive audience, so she took the time to acknowledge their dilemma and gain an even MORE rousing response to her singing the title song. She was using the song as a way to pay tribute to the Red Sox, so the audience's fervor was their way of cheering for BOTH their home team and PEARL. Brilliant move. I don't remember who won the ball game though, and I didn't care. Pearl was pure magic, though.
She was my mom's favorite singer. Mom said she sang from the heart. She took my grandmother and me to see Pearl perform at some fancy club in Los Angeles. Wish I would have asked mom where it was when I got older but didn't think of it. She died a long time ago. It had to have been a dinner and then the show because I remember all the people sat at tables with white tablecloths. I was a little girl and was fascinated with her fancy cocktail dress that changed colors to pinks and oranges from the stage lights. Then, my mom managed to take us backstage to meet her. Pearl was in a pretty robe. Was in the early/mid 60's. Have any of you seen the movie 'That Certain Feeling' with Bob Hope and Eva Marie Saint? Well, the real stars of the movie are Pearl Bailey and Jerry Mathers from Leave It To Beaver. Pearl plays a maid but is actually an operations manager. She wears THE most glamorous maid dress that's more like a cocktail dress, and she wears high heels to go with her beautiful dress. She is sexy, sophisticated and sings the song 'Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart' which is a very special part of the movie. It's a fun movie and it's Miss Bailey at her very finest. It's a must-see.
I purchased Tony Bellson's house. Tony was Louie's brother. They were both drummers. Pearl and Louie came here many times and the brothers would jam in the living room.
I had the honor and privilege to meet Ms. Bailey face to face. Talked and received great words of wisdom from Ms. Bailey. She loved the Lord and raised her children in the Lord as well. I have in my possession her signature in my pocket Bible. She wrote to seal the Godly wisdom she took to share with me that day. Your opening title is a dishonor to such a great sweet woman of God that even in her later years of life carried herself with class. Stop trying to tint her character. Its not always how you start its how you end. She loved her family and her God.
Thank you for this video! I hadnt her name mentioned in years. She was an icon and should remembered for many talents, her strength, tenacity and "go for it" attitude! What an inspiration for all people!!!
Pearl Bailey was special. She attacked life head on and accomplished her goals as a result of it. She gave us fantastic entertainment and in essence, took the world by storm. As Frank Sinatra song........SHE DID IT HER WAY AS WELL.❤❤❤❤PEARL WAS PURELY LOVED!
Hey man that was mind blowing. I'd like to thank you from the very bottom of my heart for being so damn passionate about All these great stars of the past. You really bring them to life for me. And for that you are greatly appreciated thank you so much. God bless you. And keep 'em coming.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
What a beautiful brightly lovely star 🌟 I'm so happy to know her story now. It's very unfortunate that she died after a common surgery, in today's world she would have recovered at a rehab where her vitals would have been monitored. It sounds like she had heart and possibly blood pressure issues. The passing of her entire family is very sad, and surprising especially her children who would be young enough to be alive today.
Very Informative and eye opening in depth look at Pearl Bailey life. Im from Philly and growing up I heard she lived just a few blacks away from my family. We learned about her in school and how famous she was. But nothing prepared me for this piece of her life. Thanks for enlightening me.
I can no longer find it on RUclips, but she and Johnny Carson did a number together on The Tonight Show, probably in the 60s, and she was absolutely hilarious! I believe it was, "Our Love Is Here to Stay". His reactions were funny, too. She acted like she was going to run and jump into his arms at one point. 😂 What a dame!!! ❤
Whenever pearl baily was on a show I would be in front of the tv with my mother, I loved watching her sing, dance , and her humorous attitude, along with her beauty. It was sad too hear of her passing.
Pearl, born 1918, was a Republican, which was not unusual for African Americans before FDR was President. Her early experience working for wealthy Philadelphians, allowed a personal exposure to appreciate their lives. Republican politicians respected her. She was on the Board of Directors of major international corporations, like Manufacturers Hanover Bank. She was known to question the need for more African Americans to gain promotion within the corporate structure successfully. I saw her perform on New Years Eve at the Riverboat night club, in New York City around 1980. A great opportunity I enjoyed. That was her skill. She knew how to communicate with the wealthy and powerful, never intimidated. That was developed from her youth. ❤❤❤
I am thankful that this woman was such a trailblazer for women of color in the show business industry. I salute her courage and strength of character, as well as, the love that she radiated from generous spirit.
@@masonherb2008Black just happens to be the presence of ALL color. Pearl Bailey was a woman of color who opened doors for many other women of color. There’s no confusion here.
I met both Pearl Bailey, and Louie Bellson in either 1980 or 81, Louie was very approachable Bailey not so much, but now that I have learned about her struggles in life, I can't blame her.
Except that the narrator called the famous musical "PORJEE and Bess" instead of "PORGHEE"! This narrator and others often mispronounce common or well-known words. I can't understand why they don't look up or ask about words they aren't sure about. Or why they don't have someone who oversees the recordings being made and has them correct their mispronunciations. 😑
She's so easy to identify with in so many ways, as a person', - no color, but just a sister to all of us...May God Bless her precious heart and journey...We will see you again one day, dear one!!!
Pearl Bailey was born in Newport News, Virginia, not Newport, Virginia. I am from West Virginia, but I lived in Newport News for a while and worked for Denbigh Animal Hospital.
This story is so interesting. I am a white man married to a black woman for the past 35 years. And I heard the Ellington band with Louis Bellson perform his sacre suite at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s
Pearl recorded a gospel music album with her father's church choir. A friend had a copy of it in Ohio. Since her original father was not around after her childhood, I'm not sure which father had a church choir. I have been looking for this LP but there is no mention of it anywhere. It may have been a private pressing or on a small regional label. She used to live in Orlando, Florida and she was on a book tour in Atlanta, but I talked with her about other things. She was also promoting her three cookbooks and lived in Arizona. At one time she did some work with the United Nations. Everyone that knew her spoke highly of her. When she was in Chicago she would attend First Church of Deliverance and also a Christian Science church. Articles in Ebony magazine confirm this. Sad her two kids died young. There'll never be another Pearlie Mae! (:
Always love Pearl Bailey. She was such a wonderful singer actress and always enjoyed her so much. Did a great job talking about her and Sharon everything
Queen latifa should play her in a biopic they’re both beautiful and talented that I’d watch.
Great idea!
Perfect casting!
I've been saying that for years.
They resemble one another closely. Good call!
I was also thinking about this ❤
I had the extreme privilege of meeting the great Pearl Bailey. It was 1968 and I was ten years-old. My grandfather who was in show business introduced me to her and I was just thrilled! Clickbait
Yes.stop the clickbait. The truth is more important
Can't think of any other performer who radiated such a feeling of sweetness and warmth.
It's amazing how whites, even in those days, could put aside their racism to get MONEY BACK INTO THEIR COMMUNITY
She wasn’t scandalous at all. She was a true gem - a real Diva. Really enjoyed learning about her. May she rest in peace
My partner saw Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway on Broadway in Hello Dolly. We’re both theater snobs and have seen a lot of plays. He still says this is the best show he’s ever seen.
Me, too. It was also interesting to see an all black cast. She was a great entertainer!
My parents felt the same way. ❤
Me too. Saw them.
I saw the Broadway show as well on a school trip. Wonderful cast all around, and a marvelous show.
I saw her in Hello Dolly on Easter Sunday.
It's too bad Queen Latifah never bought the Right's too Her Bio Story because they look so much alike.
Both STUNNING Women ❤🎉
The Queen would definitely do the Pearl justice!!
I've been saying that for years ❤
SO TRUE!
Yes they do. Who knows...they could be related.
I’m heartbroken and sorry that this great, talented lovely lady and the loves of her life ended more or less when she did. A legend never dies but continues with each new generation that are lucky enough to find her star.
Great idea!
Thank you for covering this lovely lady.
Thanks for listening!
Which May Company was this here in Los Angeles on Wilshire Blvd????
I worked in a Russian gift shop at the 1967 World’s Fair in Montreal. Pear Bailey came into the shop and created quite the stir! She was flamboyant and larger than life, at least to my teenage eyes. Couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family about it.
I just loved her. She had the most beautiful smile and she didn’t let anyone walk over her. I loved that about her so much. She spoked her mind and you all ways knew what she stood for.
Mrs. Bailey was gorgeous throughout her life and immensely talented. May she continue to rest in peace 🙏🏿🤍
Why do you call her life scandalous? Very misleading.
I was thinking the same thing. Title should be changed.
Agree, what’s the scandal, for clicks?
It was scandalous in those days. Nowadays, people just don't have the high morals from the past.😂
NOT "HIGH MORALS", IT WAS THE RACISM OF THAT ERA, A WHITE MAN MARRIED TO A BLACK WOMEN. LIVED THROUGH IT AND REMEMBER IT WELL.🤦🏾♀🤦🏾♀🤦🏾♂🤦🏾♂@@natrlchallenge
This would more than likely encourage people to view “click bait”
👍👍👍👍. ...Pearl Baily was a real Lady...😄... Thank you for you research and delivery... of a great Performer an Artist, humanitarian and Example of faith love and persistence and the generation that embraced her as an Great American Treasured human being, ...that....just by happenstance... lol. Miss Bailey would not let Maya Angelou be her Hello Dolly understudy and reportedly did not want that “big old ugly gal” playing her.
We are so proud of our Newport News native Mrs Pearl Bailey we have a wonderful Library in her name and we also have the pleasure of being the birth place of Mrs Ella Fitzgerald and Allen Iverson and Aaron Brooks and Michael Vick.
I will always remember her saying “honey”. Great video.
Pearl Bailey, her first name says, she was definitely a black pearl very unique and precious.

She was a very strong black woman the circumstances she had gone through would be enough to crush anyone's dreams and spirit.
God bless you Pearl may you rest in peace, when I die I will be happy to be in heaven in your presence to hear you sing again.
Queen Latifa and Pearl Bailey have very similar hand and body gestures so alike i could see her playing Pearl
Ms Pearl Bailey was one of my favorite entertainers. May she RIP.
Pearl was absolutely BEAUTIFUL --- especially during her 'youth'. Absolute STUNNER of a woman.
She was really a special lady, i hope they make a movie about her, they should, she deserves it!🌟🌟🌟
I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME TO GIVE US ALL, A LOOK INT PEARL BAILEY'S LIFE, HER BEAUTY, HER INTELLECT, HER CHALLENGES,

I AM ALSO PROUD OF HER, THAT SHE WAS WISE ENOUGH TO IGNORE, IGNORANT STATEMENTS MADE ABOUT HER, WHEN IT CAME TO THE
MARCH. YOU GIVE YOUR GIFTS TO LIFE ONE STEP AND ONE DAY AT A TIME. AND GOD IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WE ALL HAS TO ANSWER TO.
PLEASING PEOPLE AND WORRIED ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, OR DON'T DO FOR THEM. WILL DRAIN YOU OF YOUR OWN SELF WORTH, AND DIGNITY.

I’m related to Pearl Bailey on my Fathers side. She was a beautiful lady! I can see the resemblance ❤
Story of survival. Ms. Bailey found love at the end and it looks like her family join her. Incredible life and talent. RIP
A unique song stylist, great sense of humour and a strong sense of self. A roll model for up and coming future black female preformers. One of a kind.
This was so good and I learned much about this wonderful Lady!🎙
Thank you❤
Excellent presentation...I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Bailey at the Shubert where she starred in Hello Dolly, and performed in Atlantic City, NJ...she was larger than life. RIP.
As a young person I used to see her at the Apollo theatre she always brought the house down with her talent and that vibrant personality of hers

Thank you for this fabulous, blessed story. :)
You drew me in with your wonderful story. I felt like I was in that audience. Brilliant storytelling.
That's very clever, a move from a real pro, and all star in the entertainment game, she knew just how to handle them.
I love her music. She sounds like a beautiful and resilient soul.

I really enjoyed this video about Pearl Bailey. This was very informative and entertaining!
I purchased Tony Bellson's house. Tony was Louie's brother. They were both drummers. Pearl and Louie came here many times and the brothers would jam in the living room.
Thank you. This was well done and done with much respect.
She just put all the everybody to shame. She has me exhausted just by listening but as a black woman she is an inspiration to all of us
👋🏾👋🏾👍🏾
She lived as white in a white world..... Had nothing to do with the civil rights movement!
Facts
💯💯💯
Love her great storytelling too😊

How lovely to be named the ambassador of love ❤️
Thank you for this video! I hadnt her name mentioned in years. She was an icon and should remembered for many talents, her strength, tenacity and "go for it" attitude! What an inspiration for all people!!!

I agree beautiful strong black women and so much talent queen Latifah would be a perfect Pearl Bailey
What a dame!!! ❤
Thank you for presenting her story with grace and decency. ✨🙏🏽💜✨
Not a scandalous life, more of an interesting life. R.I.P. Empress Pearl🕊️
Whenever pearl baily was on a show I would be in front of the tv with my mother, I loved watching her sing, dance , and her humorous attitude, along with her beauty. It was sad too hear of her passing.
My mother, born in 1909, knew Pearl Bailey! I got to meet her when I was a child, on a few occasions, and even sat at the piano with her!
As a black lady. Not to be confused with a woman of color. She was freaking awesome..she was way before her time.
@@masonherb2008Black just happens to be the presence of ALL color. Pearl Bailey was a woman of color who opened doors for many other women of color. There’s no confusion here.
Facts
I'm so glad she was able to find the love of her life!
I met both Pearl Bailey, and Louie Bellson in either 1980 or 81, Louie was very approachable Bailey not so much, but now that I have learned about her struggles in life, I can't blame her.
Thank you! For this awesome story. You did a beautiful job.
I didn't know Pearl Baily and Louis Belson were married. What an incredible woman she was.
I grew up with Tony & Deedee. Louie would take us to school functions (elementary) and to fairs. Tony & I were best friends thru high school.
How wonderful. You were around greatness.
Great bio. Thanks for the inspiration!
Another great storytelling!!! from a subscriber and fan!
I loved her. She was so entertaining. Look forward to a biopic.
Claro me encantó tu video. Honor a esta exitosa artista Pearl Bailey y su legado.
Great video. The movie is pronounced “Poor-gee” and Bess ❤
That’s AI for you.
This is a great overview of Pearl Bailey’s life but I wished we could have heard her sing.
This story is so interesting. I am a white man married to a black woman for the past 35 years. And I heard the Ellington band with Louis Bellson perform his sacre suite at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s
Same for me! 23 years. 😊
I remember how heartbroken Mr. Bellson was.
I have a special place in my heart for pearl
I'm surprised that they didn't know she had congestive heart failure in 1990 before she had her knee surgery.
Beautiful tribute. Horribly named.
I totally enjoyed this documentary. Thank you.
Excellent video. However, using the term "scandalous" as click bait hindered the reach of this piece.
I learned so much about her thru this video. She was an awesome inspiration.
She was beautiful and so talented. Loved her !
Awesome talented, authentic and beautiful spirit. Her story is well told, and I forgive the mispronounciation ... thanks for this.
From the beginning to the end, I love everything about the video you had loved all the positive things you shared
Always love Pearl Bailey. She was such a wonderful singer actress and always enjoyed her so much. Did a great job talking about her and Sharon everything
She did the song bill bailey, and had a brother by that name as well
A trailblazer, icon, legend and inspiration. R.I.P. to Pearl Bailey a strong black woman
Great video!!!!
Pearlie Mae is gorgeous. Queen Latifah would be perfect to play her. Love them both.
Definitely a role Queen Latifa could play😊
Her story needs to be told on the big screen.
That was very informative.
Very interesting! Oh, btw the 'G' in Porgy and Bess is has a hard 'G' sound as in 'goat or gum'. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Lovely biography! What a lady!
