- When it comes to buying and selling electric cars, there’s China and then there’s everyone else.
Quartz News heads to Shenzhen, home to the world’s second-largest electric vehicle maker (after Tesla), to see how the push for EVs could be a model for the future.
BYD, which stands for Build Your Dream is a Shenzhen-based car company.
The Chinese company, CATL, just became BMW's official battery supplier.

The problem with cheap EV is range. These are fine as a city car. But usually average commuting distance in the US is much higher than other countries. Only a few brands like Tesla makes their capacity over 300km per charge.
NO, demand is low here because there is no infrastructure to support them. There are gas stations on every corner, but good luck finding a place to charge an EV. Even if we had more infrastructure, I can pull into a gas station, fill up, and be on my way in less than 10 minutes, not the hours it takes to get a full electric charge. And I can drive hundreds of miles on that one fill up, not have to find another EV charging station in the next 50 miles. Faster to cross the county in a Conestoga wagon than cross one state in an EV.

The thing is chinese car brands are not popular anywhere but china. China might dominate that sector when the time comes, but Americans and few other countries will go through generations before getting into chinese car makes. Koren and Japanese car makes have been sold worldwide and known for as long as European brands. But Chinese car Brands? there's only a few in some european countries. Kia and hyundai have barely made a dent in the U.S and elsewhere, plus they've been known and around for far longer. Why ?
It might. I won't be surprised if they don't have a full staffed research team and a huge marketing team ready for the punch.
Anybody that actually understands technology knows EV's are a bad idea. They require costly batteries and charging stations everywhere. What are you going to do when your EV is dying and all the charging spots are taken and you have to sit there for HOURS waiting for a spot to open up so you can sit there for MORE HOURS waiting for it to charge? And these giant EV batteries lose capacity over time. That means if your new EV did 300 miles when you bought it, it could only be doing 100 in a few short years requiring you to do more frequent charging and eventually forced to pay a ton of cash to get that giant battery replaced.
Also, a lot more power plants need to be built to provide the power needed to charge a city full of EV's. And that's not even mentioning the massive negative environmental impact of all those giant discarded EV batteries. China should look into Hydrogen Cars. They require ZERO charging times, no diminished capacity over time, and no need for users to have to replace batteries.

It's atleast better than aggressively pushing for EV. Batteries are more dangerous for environment, Battery Recycling is a major problem and battery manufacturing requires use of precious metals which are very scarce compared to fossil fuels. Secondly, the battery technology Tesla and most Chinese companies uses are not safe for high temperatures. Batteries which are safe in high temps are very expensive even for a person even in USA which makes it impossible to market for low per capita countries. Thirdly, Indian Financial System would be in crisis due to this. Currently, India is on brink of energy crisis due to increasing energy consumption and lesser investment in energy sector. No one is willing to build new thermal power plants due to their zero profitability and zero sale of their bonds because of bleak future of thermal power plants. Even Banks are facing billions of dollars of bad debt which no one is willing to buy. It would seriously affect economy which could result in financial crisis. India doesn't have required infrastructure for EV so it's better to stay out of it for the time being.
Also, Cycles are more promoted than EVs in every country but only in India, Riding Cycles is considered degrading. People should change their mentality to make any progress.

They constantly talk about China subsidies his companies but the USA does the same in the form of huge tax cuts, so both do the same in different ways or I'm wrong.

China puts money that works as investing seed thus favor the creation and nurture of companies, tax cuts on the other hand work by forgiving money expense but the company has to already turn out good profits, so China's approach helps create new companies while USA's approach just make big companies get unequal advantage over new and smaller companies thus cementing oligopoly
Well, that’s until they get a 0/5 euro NCAP rating.
The German government also only partially banned certain diesel cars in heavily polluted areas. Euro 5d temp and petrol cars can still drive everywhere.
You mean Euro 6d temp.
nope some of the chinese ev brand are already sold in europe like X-peng,BYD and NIO. That's mean they're passes europe NCAP rating
as long as the car doesnt have an annoying chinese start up msg im happy
Tesla thumbnail just for click bait!
4:55 talking about electic cars and showing an Evo lmao
I saw that. Like WTF
Not likely. It was actually a 2001 TT quatro that I plant to convert to electric by myself. Nothing I have ever bought made in China exists outside a landfill currently.
Where are you going to get the batteries from? Does Tesla sell battery cells direct?
In the US the Government makes it harder for EV owners...
@Dacia Sandero guys why so?
Liberal Socialist 😂😂😂😂😂 “liberal socialist”
You mean by the federal tax cut of 7500 bucks and other state and local incentives?
I am in awe of China's incredible resolve in combating climate change.
May be part of the reason but cementing itself as manufacturer of the future with EVs is more important to their economy.
Also to add, the pollution in these cities are making it be unsustainable from all the manufacturing factories, etc.
China must do this or it's bye bye city.
LMAO
It comes at the expensive of a very totalitarian government tho. If they can make humans rights more important focus I think they'll be set
electric cars suck
When it comes to change for EV and construction the US loses big time.
Its the 800 million Chinese living in rural regions that are alienated.earning less than the worlds poverty line. No western country would forget about that large of a population .the citys are so different in china.
See what people don't realize is that had they just waited like 5 more years technology for EV would have advanced lowering the cost and provideing a much better product than what's out currently. Now if that tech does come and let's say and needs a different charger it will be very costly for China to replace the infrastructure.
Why does everyone forget about Norway!!
Norway is too small. :-)
BarronVonSchnitzel to small to be inportant onely 5 million peaple
@@tomsvenkesen2476 that may be so but as of 3 years ago they buy 40% of the world's Tesla's alone and it's up to 51% now and they are investing in hydrogen you see more electric cars and charging stations in Oslo than combustion engine cars and gas stations
@@tomsvenkesen2476 They should be important. The only country in the world to sell off their fossil fuels and run domestically on renewables. Nowhere else is even close to doing that, but they have it as their target with electric vehicle use.
D Carbs El cars is the future but with hydrogen not the car with Only batteri like today.
Can you please add links to the music in the background?
Yes, do that, please.
Bro, use google assistant
I see people complaining about charging times and saying hydrogen is better. There is a new type of "refillable" battery that uses hydrogen to help condition the battery and give it a longer range, current gas stations can be revamped to "fill" that battery. Otherwise breakthroughs in fast charging have been happening since last year. By this year or next new electric cars will be able to offer 5 minute charging (BMW,TESLA,AUDI,VW) and I personally think we will be seeing electric cars with 1000 mile range and 10 minute charge times. Electric cars will only be able to go faster, further and charge quicker with the breakthroughs in technology there has been so far. Let's also remember that in 1909 electric cars were the big thing that people wanted (Henry Ford had one) and that the first police car in Akron Ohio in 1899 was electric... That seated 12.
EVs are only stop gap measure cars until hydrogen cars make it's debut !
Hydrogen on offer is just stripped natural gas with the stripped part dumped to the air no thx
I think this is so important, when I think about what china alone can do with this for the climate change and also for the health of people in their big cities! Maybe there is still hope for this planet, let's hope that all people will stay strong together to stop the destruction of it.
That is the hope!
Invest in BYD now! Stocks will soar in about 5 years from now!
Casey Sales same as Rivian Tesla etc
I will buy Chinese EV if available in Chicago
well you want to check crash test before you even thinking about buying it.
Gus Glue, tRUMPster wil say it spies on you . . .
Annually if 16,000,000 cars are imported, it would have cost the country about $0.5-0.7 trillions.
The only way I would find myself in a Chinese car, was if somebody put my dead body into one as a joke.
Still doubting "made in China" in 2019 would be stupid
Exactly. They used to say the same things about "made in Japan".
Said the chinese dude
3:52 要辛苦一点点: Slightly more work is needed. But Quartz use 'harder work'
Unless the car runs solely on solar, there are power plants somewhere spewing pollution to power EVs.
Chinese EVs will sell for US$3,000 per car. US Unions will sue them.
I mean here in America, specifically California, the Electric Car is already so common, and there are charging stations everywhere. If you take transit or the metro, even moreso. Most trains and buses specifically in Los Angeles run on electric. And if you own a Tesla, You can take cross country trips with no worry as the infrastructure has been built for the electric car and there is still much more being built. Now for where that Electricity is being powered from in any country is anyone's question... China may be going electric, but how that electricity is being processed can be just as bad as owning a gas car anyways.. Same with USA or even the EU. (EU may be better off to both China and US in the better outcome, but still...)
I welcome this change to the world, 'wholeheartedly'. China, you're doing it right. Well...far better at least than any of our countries are doing right now.
Well, Germany "is trying" to ban these Cars, but there are no real Solutions for the Time being...
Germany isn't trying anything, they HAVE to ban these cars because of EU law. It's absolutely involuntary, German local governments would love to allow all German cars on the roads, no matter how dirty they are, but modern EU law regards people's health as more important, so finally, after decades of neglecting the environment, lazy German politics has to act.
@@olli2591 They do indeed, however they have not yet brought upon any long-term Solutions for the permanent Exclusion of these Types of Vehicles.
Unless Germany embrace nuclear power, EV won't take off !
@@olli2591 They banned coal fired plants in one of Canada's largest cities and now they rely on two old 60's era nuclear reactor and people now are paying a 240% increase in their electrical bills which is an average of $2500/month to heat their homes in the winter ! Some people now don't even have enough money for food or medicine because of this increase ...people are very stupid here ! ...LoL
No doubt! Trump's sanctions say I can't have one either! Sad
It's not a question of 'maybe', it 'will be'. The variable is 'when'.
I see BYD is Hawaii its popping up everywhere!!!
Oh, for real?! That's super interesting to know.
It is one time use disposable car.
Ford stands for fix or repair daily
Buy GM. They're disposable.
Yes, because Chinese cars now are quality with super high tech and value for money! ❤️🇨🇳🚘
NEVER !!!!!!! NOT AS LONG AS THERE IS A BMW!!!!! PROUD Z 4 Owner
Ugh how much have you spent on repairs?
@@cameronmcalister5310 BMW's, while overpriced, are actually nice to work on, I was told. Not that I would ever buy one.
No one gets cars from the US, not even Americans themselves. LOL
Sun Wu there are tons of Ford in China
@Ultra Megathe Ford's sold there made in China. except f150 raptor
Buick sells like Hotcakes in China.
as an American, i would never be that much of a fool of buying a new American car, that's just stupid unless you plan on junking the car in 6 years.
I would not buy one from china, but I admire them for trying to solve their own problems
Few things missing. Where does the electricity for Chinas EV fleet come from? Coal power plants, so no win there. Where do we get the cobalt and other rare minerals from to replace all vehicles with electric vehicles? The world does not have enough for that.
probably in the near future they will have a car size replaceable/portable batteries that you simply just swap the fully charged battery in the charging station instead of waiting hours to charge.......
