This sonata is so ingenious, powerful, and harmonious-reminds me of the Philipp Scharwenka uploading spree in late 2020! And a hint of Reubke, too. By the way, this is the most curious, harmonically rich, diverting and absorbing funeral marches I have heard; easily tops the one from Scriabin’s Sonata 1 (incidentally, also Op. 6). Making the funeral march part of the first movement is one of the bravest innovations in the XIXth century music.

Well said! Did you listened to the historic radio performance of Werner Genuit here on RUclips, too? I think it is the best performance of this sonata recorded so far.

it suddenly occurs to me that this sonata could be modelled after Beethoven's Moonlight in structure, even shares the title quasi fantasia. So making a funeral march the first movement, or making the slow movement the first movement of a three-part work is not unprecedented

The 2nd Movement is clearly inspired by the Trio section of Beethoven's 31st Scherzo
