The fact that you weren’t blown away by this song is simple proof of how listening to ABBA has raised your standards and given you a more critical ear. In all actuality this song is a candy covered gem and shows absolute mastery of the songwriting craft. Look at it, we’ve got the time weathered and chart proven formula going on....Intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, then chorus with a key change. We were able to interweave a violin quartet, funky bass, hand claps, and layered vocals. The lyrics, although not inspired, are aspirational. Agnetha sounds bright and self assured which is a refreshing break from her typical angst and gloom. The argument can be made that well programmed computer could have written this song but I for one would take that as a compliment.

Thanks for the ABBA reaction. Bet this was meant for the girls at Disco. After they had come back from powdering their nose. Except for the girls voices I really don't know what sounds like ABBA means. They put out so many different genres. Uptempo/Ballad, Rock/Disco, Techno/Showtune and then on top of that most done in multiple languages. They still amaze me and they'll another band like them.

I love this song the swedish group alcazar does a live version for an abba tribute concert. Their version is very close to the original so maybe check that out sometime thanks Jay😊

It’s all a matter of taste. For instance, you really like Lover’s live a little longer and that is actually my least favorite song on the album. I really like this song . I love the intro and the bass beat and Agnetha’s vocals. I also like the key change at the end. I don’t recall you reacting to I have a dream. There is a children’s choir on that one. Not my favorite either but great vocals by Frida.
This is a very produced record I suppose, it's nice pop disco but there's maybe more emotion to the Lovers song. The part where the vocal seems to get stuck is kind of unusual, some might not like that so much.

I agree with you Gina. Lovers is one of my least favorite songs also, while AGAN is one of my favorite ABBA songs.

I like how it goes from a Mozart sonata style intro (it has always reminded me of Mozart sonata #16) to disco then incorporates the disco beat of the song into a Mozart sonata.
Exactly this showing nothing else just Benny's deep addiction with Master Amadeus....

Take a chance on me, Mamma Mia cannot be same as we know without this huge Mozart impact...🙂
But my favourite is the Day before you came, when Benny catching the hardest from Mozart - pushing the Requiem's Confutatis closing chords into his final song's outro, almost as copying there those dark harmonies...
With that he giving an extra meaning of that very deep song, I call that "Abba's Requiem"....
@@kevhynaleks2631 Plus, you can definitely hear Vulfie's' influence in Intermezzo #1. That song is so very underrated. Benny also seems to take (darker) notes from Tchaikovsky, more notable in My Momma Said, Watch Out, Summer Night City, Lovers (live a little longer), and That's Me.
And that group that did As Good As New should have more recognition.
You give an honest reaction and I like that. This was never my favourite song from the VV album but it has grown on me recently. The live version is worth a listen.
I don't know... I think it's very strong and clever song. By the way, singing it is just hell. It looks like very easy, no way. For me it's hidden masterpiece.
The opening of this (before it goes into disco) is actually a folk style, to hear them do that in another song, look at Dum Dum Diddle from the Arrival album. A song that some like a lot and it incorporates folk dance into pop very well. The studio performance is great, and there's also a fully live performance which is great too.
There's really a lot of interesting stuff in this song production wise. They always find ways to make the chorus sound different on the repeat. It's such a driving tempo too and the song does not lose energy.

@@eduardooscar309 this is true @Eric16395. I first heard Summer Night City when it was released on the Greatest Hits 2 in 1980. I didn't have the single. Only single I ever had was Knowing me Knowing you with Happy Hawaii on the B Side. Summer night city, along with Lovelight and Gimme Gimme were released on a later CD of Voulez Vous.

Have a listen to some of the post-ABBA A&U stuff..."Story Of A Heart" by the Benny Andersson Orchestra, for instance, or some of the stuff by Steps...

Every song is good on the album. Some are great, this late 70's song isn't the best, but they're all good.
It's a decent album track but it's no great Abba masterpiece or anything as some want to claim.
