banette reminds me of a story i loved as a kid, the velvetene rabbit. a young boy contracts scarlet fever and has to throw out all his old toys, including his favorite stuffed rabbit. a fairy comes along and makes him a real rabbit as a reward for having “become real” to his boy. the next spring he returns to watch over the boy, and the boy recognizes him. i can see having your toys come to life being frightening, especially when theres ghostly energy involved. but maybe its like you said-banette just wanted to return to its old friend, just like the velveteen rabbit, but because of our fear we misinterpreted its intentions
You just brought back a childhood memory. I think I watched a movie based on the story as a kid. I loved stuffed animals as a kid, and seeing the pokedex entries about it scared it, but I like this take on it.
Banette has always been a personal favorite of mine, even before Mega Evolution was a thing. I've always loved the idea of Pokemon that's a doll possessed by a ghost, and it pulls it off so we'll. Plus, with good stars and moves, this little doll can be one powerful nightmare of a Pokemon in my opinion! 👻
Banette has been my favorite Pokemon for a long time. Its honestly a bit sad to see it seemingly be "forgotten" by being so over looked, even by recent games. It's also ironic, as yeah, abandonment was the catalyst for Banette's sentience. I actually hadn't seen that last Pokedex entry as I haven't played Ultra Sun/Moon, but thats a neat and honestly cute way for Banette to be interpreted, as simply lonely and looking for acceptance. Very nice to see a discussion on this Pokemon.
Honestly, I think Banette was only kinda forgotten in the anime but every ghost type masters have been spamming this Pokemon whenever they get a chance😭
During my countless (and I do mean countless) playthroughs of Emerald, I've always raised either this guy or Dusclops for the Mossdeep City gym. So I've grown to appreciate this guy quite a bit. Sucks that it's Mega didn't get more Special Attack. Tons of special moves to use, but an okay at best 93 base to fuel them. Also, some pokedex entries point out how it sticks pins into itself to place curses on others, so we got some light Voodoo powers as well.
I REALLY love that Shuppet-Banette theory! I wondered the same, and I like the fusing-with-a-toy thing so much! Makes a lot of sense! I haven't heard of it becoming a toy with some affection, that's rather sweet!
Would love to see a regional evolution (only way to circumvent a mega, really) of Banette where it can turn into a Ghost/Fairy type with high friendship/affection.
I love that suggestion/theory you made, I think itd be so cool if it could be incorporated in the game. Like instead of evolving your Shuppet based on its level, you need to give it a Pokedoll.

I think you have misread your source for the Tsukumogami claim. 1. Tsukumogami can be VERY dangerous, just like any old yokai, it’s rare for any yokai to be flat out safe. Ittan Momen for example flies around and smothers people to death and are known for being very dangerous, even in your source on screen it says that some are dangerous to humans and to not confuse them with the more playful umbrella tsukumogami 2. You could argue that Banette is loosely based on the Hinnagami. I say loosely because Hinnagami are more known for their wish granting ability, but the similarities come in when you look at how they treat their owners. Hinnagami are obsessive and refuse to leave their owners side, even haunting them in death still tormenting them with their powers. You can argue Banettes obsession with hunting down their previous owners are more closely related to Hinnagami rather than using Karakasa Kozo as an example I know this video is like 2 months old now and nobody will care, but hopefully whoever cared to read this learned something new
My first play through of Emerald last year was a Nuzlocke and I had a Banette. That thing was monstrous, being able to shred nearly everything with it’s, in that gen, physical shadow ball. Sadly it died during the Phoebe battle, it tore through all of her other Pokémon but Sableye took the hit and KOed it in return. I later lost the Wallace battle (when I got to it I had also lost my Flygon to Drake), so I now sometimes think back and wonder how differently that fight could have gone if my Banette had lived.

Recent episode of pokemon aim to be a pokemon master had this confirmed where a doll left behind became banette. Gave me slight Toy Story 3 vibes with the Teddy bear guy who got left behind by accident then was replaced.
Mega banette was a bit of an unfortunate one tbh. Extremely good attack stat, but with an awful movepool, prankster, it feels like they had no idea what it should do.
