Most people have a voice. Some people have an excellent voice. Whitney had a divine INSTRUMENT. When she opened her mouth to sing, magic happened and she was able to channel something down from the realm of the divine to all us humans on this earthly existence. Her voice was truly a brige between heaven and earth. Sadly this gift did not make her immune to all the pain and pitfalls of human existence, but she certainly enriched the world for being here. She mastered all technicalities in singing melisma or inflections, transitions, chest, head, mixed voice and falsetto, scales you name it she mastered it and could do it better than anyone else.
Aretha was light years ahead in all departments, she had a much more beautiful tone and sound and instinctively beautiful use of riffs and runs, and didn't bore people senseless with long-winded Broadway shit.
That's what you call 'park n bark'. No gimmicks needed. Send the dancers home. Give the background singers the day off. Turn down the lights. All she needed was that voice.

Despite her upper register being a bit compromised already at this point, Whitney's performance here still remains magical mostly because her voice itself sounds magical. This song perfectly demonstrates Whitney's unparalleled vocal beauty - my favorite bit being "move a mountain, light the SKY, make a wish COME true" and how it shows off that glorious, buttery midbelt.

No one can beat her when she sings with an orchestra she gives you stage presence, beauty, vocals that soars above the music but can caress it's magnificent a talent many wish they had including myself.
Whitney was well out of her prime and likely smoked before she interviewed, but still superior to all. Her voice is a full orchestra, background singers, and dancers, with lighting and costume all on its own. Fully clothed, just a beautiful face, and a charismatic aura.

This woman had an undeniable gift that God only gives to a small few. Hearing her sing, as she did here, makes that simply undeniable. Of course, there will be some who will focus on the downfalls Whitney suffered during her life. The ones we all suffer, but have the comfort of not having televised the world-over. Some have to do what they can to be feel better than someone, but none of them will touch millions with a voice like this! Amazing Whitney!

In her prime and even after no one could touch this woman! Look she didnt need a stage full of props and dancers all she needed was a microphone and it was BOOM welcome to the Whitney show! She was one a kind and there will never be another person with a voice like that! I truly believe she was a once in a lifetime gift from god!
