My Tesla Using A CCS Adapter Challenges 10-80% V3 Supercharger Times!

  • Dave just received his CCS to Tesla adapter from Tesla. He is super excited to see if the charging speeds are good enough to rival actual Tesla Superchargers themselves. While he is pretty confident this new method of charging a Tesla will blow away a V2; especially units that are force split, the question is how does this new method of charging a Tesla compare to a V3? Note that on the graph I present at the end of the video, the red line labeled 10/23 60F is actually the 11/5 charging session using the CCS Adaptor…Apologies!

now we need tesla to create the adapter and software modifications to open up their network to CCS vehicle owners ! tesla owners might be worried about CCS vehicles clogging up their superchargers, but teslas clogging up the CCS stations is a bigger risk, as there are far more teslas on the road.

I'm not totally disagreeing with you, but Tesla pays for their network to make sure that drivers of their vehicles have a great experience and can road trip worry free. CCS is a public network. Why is Tesla the only EV manufacturer that aggressively spends the money needed to ensure charging is available? That's the real question.

    • @CraigMatsuura
      @CraigMatsuura Год назад

I don't totally disagree either, however my understanding is that Tesla has built their network by selling CO2 credits to the other manufacturers. So in an indirect way those companies are paying for part of the super charger network. The end Tesla customer is no way paying for the super charger network. I do agree with the first comment the risk can be higher Tesla is clogging CCS. Fortunately it requires a newer Tesla ECU to use the adapter.

@@TheAdventureAuto two things I will say that will answer your question 1 is that EA is owned by VW the reason why they created EA was because they were forced to as a punishment for dieselgate these EA stations are them just fulfilling a contract they were forced into as a punishment VW could care less about EA they are going to do the bare minimum to fulfill thier requirements that's it and the 2nd reason is that the power grid cannot support all these level 3 chargers and level 2 chargers basically whenever you install a level 2 charger at your home it's like installing a 2nd hvac system on to your home it pulls that many kw the power grid in the United states has not been updated in the last 50 years all you have to look at is California they told people to stop charging thier electric cars at night because it is overloading the power grid the companies like ea evgo know this so they are basically at the edge as far as they can go right now

@@CraigMatsuura my understanding (and i could be wrong) is that in order for TSLA to qualify for IRA money, they needed to open up their charging network to everyone....so i think it's all about the subsidies....just like in europe....

I have a 2018 Model S 100D and I just had Tesla retrofit my Model S with the CCS retrofit. They came out to my house, installed the ECU and wiring and installed the software and it works awesome! It did cost $490 but also included the Tesla CCS adapter.

I'm batting 50/50 with my CCS adapter. The last few times I now get an error message informing me the adapter isn't seated properly. I think it's all the weight hanging on the charge port. If I prop it up then the connection is made.

I just went 1900 miles from Arizona to Ohio in an EV6 that maxes out at 175 kW and wherever I could I used EA stations. Honestly my failure rate to get that 170 kW rate on first plug in was pretty low, around 10-15%. And the slow charging instances were including the cold mornings where my Kia didn’t precondition the battery. In order to achieve that 85% reliability I had to scan PlugShare and look at which stations were good and opt for those if possible. And as a bit of a cheat code, I’d gone through all those same stations from Ohio to Arizona just 3 weeks earlier, so I had my own recollections and PlugShare notes to build off of too. Still all in all a very decent experience and honestly I was stressing out way more to find healthy food choices that I actually wanted to munch on from the Walmarts more than charging struggles. That and a lack of bathrooms at some early morning stops.

It looks like those signet chargers can deliver max 400A. As they can run up to 1000V, they can deliver the announced 350kW even at that lower current. If you have a lower voltage car, you can’t go as high.

Hard to understand why Tesla owners would be concerned about making Telsa Super Chargers available to non-Teslas given how often they use J1772 and CCS chargers.

    Great points Dave...
it's all inclusive. If one has more choices for charging? One can optimize a trip better. Why route to a SC when incan charge at EA at 350 kW and continue on a trip faster? Get to one with low "state of charge" and leave early? Better route planning for everyone.

I’m not sure if everyone in the US is aware, but all of us outside (I’m commenting from Australia) have a CCS2 receptacle on our Tesla’s, not the Tesla receptacle, so we don’t need an adaptor, we can just charge anywhere so we’ve already experienced those speeds.

Another comment. I am pissed that my local Tesla SC rate is 42 cents when FPL and EA (member plus) is only 30/31 cents. These are “for profit” chargers vs Teslas claim to just break even. I can put up with slightly less convenience to save $. Also, the EA chargers typically are more congested. BTW, I purchased a third party CCS1 Tesla adapter that appears to be identical to the Tesla adapter (even weight is the same) for $180 from EVBase.

Wow, a really long preamble, over half the video, before we get to the meat. However, now that Tesla is speaking to all the charger manufacturers to accept the neat Tesla plug and socket as standard, this adapter may become a thing of the past. I noticed in the video that the "STOP" signs were just suggestions in your state. Cops up here get wet over people making a "rolling stop". Demerit points AND fine!

I used two EA chargers and the rate was disappointing. I used a 350w ea charger on a road trip and the Tesla supercharger was faster. The lack of consistency is the most disappointing. I thought it was a fluke but a local one 150kw only delivered 30kw. Even the local Volta delivered 43-45kw.
Edit-I can’t remember the the soc at the 350kw but at the 150kw the soc was 50 percent. At the Volta fast dc charger I can get 45kw even at 80 percent soc. I remember driving about 100 miles when I was 100 percent soc and I was pulling only 63kw in auburn ca. No one else was using the chargers next to me. The weather was around 65 degrees.

Not a fan of seeing Tesla vehicles clogging EA stations like they do their own SuperChargers at all but, having said that, if this pushes EA to improve their hardware and double the number of installations we all win. Now, Tesla should either open up their SuperCharger network or provide a Tesla to CCS adapter. Great video Dave!

Hmmm. So if the industry creates great CCS adapters for Tesla to allow using non-Tesla Charging Stations, and they can also create an Adaptor for Tesla Charging Stations for non-Tesla vehicles, we may not need to have a single, standard protocol for EVs. Hmmm.

Dave . . . enjoy your videos, but all Tesla owners should be denied charging at Electrify America stations until the Tesla Supercharger network is open to all EV's. We do not want our burgeoning network clogged up by the Tesla fan boys without equity. Oh, well . . . the Biden Network of basement chargers should be up and running by 2035.
