- This video is the first of a series in which I will show you how to create a crocheted cardigan (with or without a hood) that you can customize. That being said this is not a tutorial in the strict sense of the word but more of a formula, therefore there is no exact pattern to follow! I hope you enjoy it! 😊
Another fabulous, clear and friendly tutorial.. You are like my personal little crotchet guru in my phone.. Thankyou so much x
🌞🌺🙌🏾
i did the campfire cardigan version and used a 8.0mm hook and a size 3 yarn and mine came out amazing and fit my plus size body perfectly
Sunshine Jennifer Cook how many skeins. Did you use? Size3.
I have learned more from your tutorials than any class or book! Thank you so much for being awesome!
You are so very welcome! I have been stitching for the better part of 20 years and am always learning new things! Believe it or not, this is my first cardigan ever! I hope you give this project a try, and keep growing as a fellow stitcher! 😊
Fiber Spider I plan on it! Currently finishing a cal king granny square blanket but this is the next on my list. Thank you again! You're fabulous!!!
Thank you once again. I’m sat crocheting my latest project so, decided to listen/watch this as I love listening to you and it’s on my to do list. Yesterday I saw someone wearing one of these and the colour way was beautiful, so, naturally we chatted, as you do. Anyway I definitely don’t have mistakes, I have 'non-deliberate errors!' 😂🤣 It sounds so much better.
Wow!!! You read my mind Spider. I have been searching for a jacket/cardigan like this for months to keep me warm through the cold British winter. You are awesome. Going to put down my current project and start this immediately. Sending you love from England. Xxx
I’m almost done with your circle vest “tutorial”” and the top down pullover!! Again! Thank you so much!!
I made this cardigan for my spouse who wears it everywhere. I put buttons on it, too. Am now making another one for myself. Love your design and teaching. You are great!
I’ve started my cardigan with Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in Blush. It looks rose gold in the daylight. I am thrilled with this easy peasy formula and I thank you, Fiber Spider. I think it is a wonderful gift that you provide to those of us who are not in a position to purchase patterns. I love your title as I was born on Halloween. Thank you for your time and patience!
I really like how you started the video! it really helped me to "see" how the finished project would look when I (or someone else) would wear it. thank you lots for the video, can't wait for rest of this series💘🙌🏻
I’ve been looking for a good cardigan tutorial for about a month now, but to be honest none of them were easy enough to follow. I love what you’ve done here. You have made this so easy to follow and I’m excited to try it. Thank you for all of your videos, if it wasn’t for you I would have given up on crochet.
Met a lady in WM today while I was wearing what I call my Hippie Sweater, which she loved BTW! Of course I told her about The Fiber Spider (and how fabulous he is) on RUclips and since she was a crocheter, she could make her very own! Almost forgot, we had to search out somebody with a pen, she didn't want to forget The Fiber Spiders name! Of course I told her about Big Cakes as well! Sooo, curiosity is now killing me (meow) as to weather or not she found the tutorial! Are you out there lady from WM?
I absolutely can't wait to make this !!! I have a feeling that I won't be the only one getting one !!! Thanks for all you do !!!
Heard about this pattern for a while now. Thank you so much for making it a reality for me. Just love that green. Thanks for all you do for us. You are much loved.
I know this is an "older" pattern BUT as we are under "shelter in place, quarantine, stay at home order" whatever u want to call it...due to the virus...i am BEYOND bored and after organizing and re-organizing my closet...i noticed i need a new sweater! 🤣 thanks fiber spider for another awesome tutorial! I hope u have enough tutorials to keep us "yarnivors and spiderettes" busy busy busy! 🕷 stay healthy my friend!
Well arent you just a wealth of information. I absolutly love you. Im 70 and have been crocheting for years but i still learn from you. Love your personality. Your very clear in the way you explain things. I listened to your video about your charity crocheting and i could tell it was dear to your heart. I just love your videos and i really like your diversity. You reading club i really enjoy. Keep up the good work please.
I love no pattern projects, to be completely honest that's how I got really good at crocheting as a kid. Thank you for sharing this!
Need to make this....TU for custom sizing....I'll be back to listen and follow along🥰 will definitely be liberating...
With the hood!!!! ❤❤❤❤
You're awesome.
I made one like this earlier this year using another tutorial. I love the ability to play with the size, yarn and hook. You're right, anyone can make this. And you explained it very well. (I love the Bob Ross reference.) 😊 Thanks for sharing. ♡
You are my absolute favorite instructor! I love your attention to detail. We have the same methods of brain processing and being thorough with our stitch counts. I adore you. Very highly recommended!
Since I'm in a time crunch for winter projects and Ive completed the one I made for myself. I thought I would try this w a k hook and a chunky yarn for my sisters gift.
I just made this last week.. in a suitcase 2T with lion brand sunset nights color zanzibar.. with a pointed elf hood.. made my grand baby look like Cindy Lue Who
Last weekend I watched umpteen videos for this cardigan and probably started umpteen swatches. I got frustrated and put it aside. Today I stumbled across your tutorial and it "clicked."
I followed your tutorial and I am happy to say that I am officially starting my cardigan today !
Thank you 😊🦋🌺🌷🥰🌼🌸🌹❤️So much. Blessings on more inspiring creations.👍🏾
hi there. this is going to be my cardigan. i have been searching for just the right one and i finally found it! xoxo
Sent for some Big Cakes today! Michael's had a sale, got enough for 2 cardigans because I couldn't decide on one! Can't wait to get started, looks like such fun!
I'm so happy that you made this sweater! I just love it! I was really struggling with the other sweater and mainly because of the sleeves. Thank you so much Fiber Spider!
This is so cute! I know you do requests sometimes and I was wondering if you ever have time could you please please please please please do a granny square cocoon cardigan with really tailored tight sleeves and then going into a really big oversized cocoon shape in the back. I’ve seen other tutorials for it before but I would really like to see one from you because you are one of the best teachers! Thank you so much
I started a hexagon sweater from another site before I found you...& I didn't want the bell sleeves.. so I put it down for awhile so I could think about when to start decreasing...now I can do my decrease along with you!! Hope you don't mind that I'm starting with someone else and finishing with you..... I hadnt discovered you yet..😀but I'm glad I did..when I finish I'm gonna do yours..I love the sleeves & lapels.
Finished one for a three year old in one night... . Thank you, Mr Spider .. for the tutorial ...
Just wanted to share that the hexagon can be worked like this: magic ring+ ch 3+ 2dc, ch 2 + 3dc ... repeat until 6 dc clusters, join+ ch 3 & turn + 2 dc in same 2-chain space, ch2 + 3dc in same 2-ch sp (creates corner)... repeat to end: each 2-ch sp gets 3dc cluster+ch2+3dc cluster, jn + ch3, turn+ 2dc in same join space, jump over previous row’s cluster & make corner... repeat till desired width.
This method eliminates the slip stitching at start of each round, and chaining only 2 at corners is sufficient, also, no ch1 is required between clusters, saving you a little time and a little yarn, plus a perfectly neat hexagon especially at the joining points, comes out flawlessly. Happy crochet!
Yet another great pattern...and in granny style, no less! So, in keeping with the granny theme, how about a tutorial for a rectangular granny afghan; size adjustable according to the number of starting chains...food for thought, perchance? I'd also like to see more shawl patterns on the order of the "Cloister Shell Shawl", and the "Arbor Shawl". Keep up the good work. I'm always so pleased when I see another one of your tutorials (both knit and crochet) appear. Be well.
Using a random color yarn and it's looking fabulous. Thanks for the tutorial and all the ideas.
I am so GRATEFUL that I found your site. You have such a beautiful personality and spirit. Thank you for sharing your gift of crochet.
Wow! Literally the best granny cardigan I've ever seen!
Thank you very much! I'm quite pleased with the results although think I would be happier if I add buttons, lol. You too can do this, just be patient, remeber to breathe, and that this is a formula where the finished product will be as unique as you are 😊
Love love love! Fabulous project. I hate complicated patterns! Can't wait for the next instalment 🙂
Can't wait for the rest of series. your very good at explain things and I am looking forward to making this cardigan.
I LOVE YOU AND YOUR VIDEOS AND YOUR PROJECTS. Made skull queen afghan for my on. He loves it! Made several triangle shawls with are holes! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. THANK YOU. YOU ARE JUST ADORABLE,
Thanks so much for making video I will be making this for sure and I'm thinking I might add a ribbed band down the front for some buttons ! Love it !! 👍🏼❤️👍🏼
I LOVE this tutorial! I hate following patterns exactly because I have kids and ultimately get lost in the pattern!! Thank you!!!!
Started my first hex last night, on my second now. Using Icelandic, thinking of doing decreasing part of sleeves in charcoal.
Love this...
Finished my first today ! I loved doing it and it turned out great, thanks to you Fiber Spider! Hook in hand. starting on another, totally different colors and no hood on this one!
Wow ur spidy senses must have been tingling i was just thinking of making this but totally hate patterns! I love ur videos and i prefer charts. Best video yet!

Love this, and you! Am making one for my spouse for Christmas.
Pound of love is a weight 4, be it a light 4, but nonetheless a 4.😉
hello fiber spider another brilliant tutorial really excited and ready to start. i have finished the poncho and the kaleidoscope blanket now this is my very next big project. hello from an Australian pupil sending my greetings to you.
I LOVE THIS Cardigan Super job
I love this ❣️ Ready for my first sweater 😅
Just had to make a start on a baby cardigan first, couldn't resist, then one for myself in Lion Brand 'Rio' Chunky.Thank you so much for your inspiration and philosophy xxxc 😘🤓
Hey there Fiber Spider! I've watched many of your tutorials and crocheted along with several. I love the way you chat with "us" as you go along! Been crocheting a lot for others but I'm going to make this cardigan for me! You see, I LOVE the granny too! I think the way you described figuring the correct size was very clear. Thank you so very much for sharing your creativity!
So excited about this!!! This will be my first clothing piece and I'm so thrilled your pattern is the one I chose 💗 see ya in the next video 😍
I do, too, love it. I will be following
Thank you for this l have made these for babies but never for an adult, thanks so much for sharing you are a joy to watch, happy crocheting from lreland😊😊
Great explanation! Only thing I say is you do know the point of the cakes is so you don’t have to roll them into a ball. It’s to have a cake that sits flat with a center pull start.
I have made several of these before but a lot of the other tutorials are not as clear as you are. I also love that you have a method for tapering the arms. That’s especially useful for someone like me who would drag those wide sleeves into everything. Thanks love this tutorial.
Thank you very much! 😊 I know about cakes vs. balls, but I still like to ball up my yarn first because that way I can deal with splicing knots, defects, etc on my own terms prior to working the piece. Call me paranoid, but I like to think of it as erring on the side of caution 😉
This is sooo good. Looks just like one I bought. Needed to know how to make a cardy with a decent shape. ❤️
I really like it 💕just bought a Caron big cake our micheals store had a sale buy one get one 50percent off my color was Blueberry Tart now can watch your videos because you are very good and make this and customize it. I've made one cardigan sweater coat off a ten min video not yours of coarse but it turned out good I improvised most of it and shaped the arms to fit me although it could still fit a bigger person I like roomy.
I can't wait to try this I understand the two granny hexagon but an actual tutorial with your own ideas and expectations will be fabulous. Oh by the way the Astranria Cowl tutorial was great I've made six for people and the width gives them a lovely drape.
Cheers to you from one of you yarnettes 👍
I just recently found your channel.. I just love the things you make .. you explain everything so clearly and precisely.. thank you so for sharing .. you always give me great ideas 😁
Love this ,just started the hood ,you are brilliant ,and so very patient ,love your tutorials ...sending love from the UK x x
I have never made any clothing before but you've inspired me to try. You are awesome sauce
First of all, this is the first time I have ever made a cardigan {let alone without a pattern, lol). Secondly, I thought I was the only one who said 'awesome sauce', lmao! 😄
Bonjour, il est magnifique.
Votre tuto est explicite.
Dommage qu'il ne soit pas en tricot.
Merci d'avance.
Continuez. Cordialement.

You are so good! I hope you are passing your skills n to some kids or nieces or nephews. I was taught by my Mom and I have taught my nephew how to crochet plus other kids and you ng people.
Love the looks of this cardigan. In fact you have quite few patterns I would like to make. Thank you
Perfect,I'm sorry what's the name of that scrumptious green yarn, it looks anti peel, and yes I'll spread my wings with ya my friend 😂🧶🙌🏾🌞🌺
I like hoodies because in Toronto it is windy.
i just start doing this tonite and excited to make one for myself as my early birthday present.
Love this tutorial!! Thank you for doing a sweater!! 😻I'm very excited to try this 😍
I love your videos! It is just like you are reading my mind, I saw the Fireside pattern and thought pretty but looks hard to do. Thanks to you I l know I can do it. This will be a birthday gift for my niece Thank you so very much!
Wow ! I love this one ...!!!
Love the idea, already looking at my yarn selection to see what I can use. Thank you for sharing.
Be sure to have a LOT! The grey example shown took the better part of two skeins of 'pound of love'! I'm sorry I can't give you the exact yardage you will need, but then again this is more of a formula than an exact pattern.
I love it! I made one for my mom and she lives it and gets questioned about everywhere she goes!
Love your chatter makes me feel like I’m there with you. Like a crochet circle lol x
thank u my friend from Athens!
Great tutorial ❤ Thanks so much 😊
Great tutorial!
I have been thinking about making a cardigan for myself and I am going to try this soon.thank you
Thank-you FS, awhile ago I started the "CampfireCardigan" (Caron Cake Mixed Berries) knowing I'd need to make size adjustments, I'm short. I'm noting your suggestions on the pattern to make it my own. Thank-you for all you do, Best ^..^ ^..^
You have inspired me to try this! I'm super excited and can't wait to show you what I come up with!
The best way to customize or size something is: lay it on the person, it's called draping. All I'm trying to say is you're straining at gnats and that's what's frustrating. Just eyeball it, if you're not very good at that and you know your size you know how wide it needs to be just do the math, who cares how many rows it's got? Is it big enough to cover your @$$, is the question - just crochet til it does!
Oh I see now you've laid down your shirt to see if it's the right size... Dang good idea. brilliant!
I just made a long fall jacket/coat where I didn't use a pattern. But I will be trying this one next.
Great pattern, I might try with all my leftovers.
I love the idea of using this project as a stash-buster, just keep in mind that if you want some uniformity to use the same weight of yarn throughout.
I have a lot of worsted weight from sweater scraps. Thanks again for the pattern
Denise Hogarth
I've got several of these planned here but am finishing up what I have going first for a change LOL. One will be a size 3 weight, in a lovely coral I found, and the other will be done in a size 4 Bernat Pop color hot chocolate. Thinking even a 3rd one... sort of in between... in greens. I've found, I love projects like this! I positively LOVE the way you customized the sleeves. So here I am, sitting and watching, and debating... do I finish up what I have going, or do I start one of these today LOL. Thank you for doing this! You rock!
Thank you! Just be aware that you will need a lot of yardage - no joke! Also I totally understand the dilema of too many works in progress. Do what feels right for you, follow your instinct and your fiber bliss lol.
Thank you so much your so talented and calm and nice teacher I hope you will show the hook how you crocheted on to the cardigan..
Thank you so much for this. Has given me an idea for another project. Will let you know if it works. I love your tutorials.

Have liked and subscribed. Thank you for making such a wonderful, detailed video, your's is the first that has described the details so precise that I can understand it! This will be on my next list of crochet projects! THANK YOU so much...
Love it!!!! Need to make for this storm!!! And now!!!
Lady Duchess by
Thank you for pattern just starting mine now first side. Looks great.
I dont know your name but you are a great teacher.
\Ove this design. Will be a future project. Really impressed. Reminds me of Zimmermann method of knitting.
Zimmermann was revolutionary to knitting! She helped to break moulds away from yarn manufacturers and pattern makers that said 'in order to do this project you must use this yarn'. I have always rebelled in my own little way and through tons of trial and error have learned a thing or two about tweaking patterns over the years. That is why I really wanted to try this formula style series in the hopes that you too can break free, try something you may have been afraid of trying, learn more, and grow to new heights of potential one stitch at a time 😊 Thank you!
Can you do one in 2 large granny squares with multiple colors and pockets please please please
Absolutely love the look of this! You just gained a subscriber. Now to start making this for my mom. :)
