After a couple decades -- about twenty years, no less -- buying guitars and amps and other pieces of gear, I decided to jump on the pedalboard renaissance bandwagon after spending quite some time with mainly rack-mount units and a controller. I thought I'd treat myself to the ultimate board. After all I'm 54 and you only live once. But I had a money constraint, so the idea was to buy everything second hand, looking for the best deals on the greatest possible units. I ended up with a Catalinbread Belle Epoch and a GFI Specular Tempus. I couldn't be happier. I totally respect Dave Friedmans picks, they're all great, but the Belle Epoch is as good as the MXR Echoplex (the MXR looks a lot cooler), and the GFI, I think, outdoes the DD500 and the Timeline and the Flight Time IMHO. It does everything they do and more. Just saying. It's an amazing superpedal.
I love my Catalinbread Belle Epoch, but I have never tried the Dunlop Echoplex. I also love my Moog MF Analog Delay, which I use for my Slap Back Delay, but they don’t make it anymore.
In reference to the first question about whether to go in front or in the loop; memory man’s invert/flip the phase so unless you have a series loop, it’s gonna be out of phase. I run a Komet AmbiKab andI tried mucking with a phase flipper (Gig Rig Humdinger) and it worked but it sounded so much better in the front anyway.. Your gf/wife will agree.. 😅

HIGH GAIN PEDAL ,WITH A MID CUT . 3 BAND EQ, THINK BOSS METAL CORE BUT WHAT I'M THINKING IS WE CAN HAVE A MIDDLE CONTROL . COULD BE A REAL COOL PEDAL. IM ALL ABOUT THE HIGH GAIN STUFF LOL.
I did an extensive delay-pedal search & comparison. I love my Boss DD-500. I play in 2 bands, that cover alot of-territory. I can tweak it ( on the fly ) or to infinity. Boss has always done Fantastic Delays. It actually ended my Delay-pedal search. oNe LovE from NYC
Funny that Tim Pierce recommends the H9 as unit to put in front of your amp, clean or dirty, as a tone enhancer.
The main problem with the H9 is headroom, or lack thereof. It only takes instrument level, anything too hot and it’ll clip. Very weird coming from Eventide, especially since their Factor pedals had a line level switch,
@@Sperzel I am using mine after a OX box or Neve mic pre, at line level and no clipping ever, loads of head room.

That’s from an Eventide employee. You can google and see for yourself that people have issues with the H9 clipping. I’m not bashing it, it’s a great unit, just a weird hardware choice coming from Eventide.

Hey Marc and Dave, I'm really enjoying this, and the way you go off road about gear and players. I initially came in to see if/how you'd be reviewing the Strymon TimeLine. I recently threw down waaay more dough-ray-me than ever before for Strymon's TimeLine and a Mobius, and put em in my loop. Then I immediately added a Keeley Compression Pro in front of my Blackstar HT20RH Head . . . manuals all around me since Friday: sleep-deprived and low blood sugar by now. But hey, I'm sounding fabulous; especially cranked. Sorry to rattle on. I'm just sayin, I popped in for a bit, and I've been hanging out with you for almost two hours already. Don't stop visiting like this, about anything and gear at all Dave, I'm glad I watched you with Pete, Jennifer and Steve for Eddie on the 7th{?}; y'all honored and celebrated him really well. The boss 500 sucks because the time knob is dual function!!!!????? That's the most important knob on a delay!!! How'd they fuck that up??? You can't do accelerations or decelerations! It glitches! They solved it with use 200 series. 200 all the way, I took the 500 back! I love the DOD rubberneck! I bought two! Best for sound, price and features. It does everything and more! I also really love my T Rex tap tape delay. So good! You'll never go back. It's touchy though. I wouldn't tour with it! The small one doesn't sound as good which is sad. I also really like the walrus ARP-87.the timeline is a classic. Love it. H9 is awesome. But the DOD turned sideways next to the walrus so the tap buttons are side by side covers all my bases! Awesome show. Keep it up guys!! Again Dave, I love the dirty Shirley! JTM-45 knarl for my ears all night!!!think ac/dc down payment blues intro!!!

Dan Hawkins from The Darkness swears by his Mad Professor Deep Blue delay, for putting in front of a distorted Marshall.
"One of the same amp". I have a Trinity sIIIv6. It's basically a Marshall 18 watt 1974 circuit. But it has a pair of EL84 and a pair of 6V6, with a switch to alternate between them. The switch also changes one resistor (for matching volume/gain). The sound is surprisingly similar. Made the whole thing almost pointless.

All of the pedals are probably fantastic, but $449.00, it would cost you 5K to put a board together for your bedroom. You guy's should do a show on all the cheapo pedals that are out there, which is the best of the $50 and under pedals. A little more realistic for most people. Not that this was a bad show, this was a super killer show as always!

I would say that "budget" delay pedals would be pedals under $200, not under $50,..... everything under $100-150 is going to be complete and total junk.
@@YourCaliBos Yeah, personally I don't care for the channels that focus solely on cheap gear,... buy the best you can afford and you will find yourself actually spending less in the long run because you will not constantly be upgrading crap gear.
The best value is usually in the middle, between the most expensive and the cheapest stuff.

Dave how do you feel about the tc flashback 2? That’s what I’m using with my be 50 it works great for me. Love it for the tone print app. I honestly don’t care for many of their standard delays on that pedal but you can find some sweet stuff in the tone print library.
Plus the TC handles line level loops without any trouble

Flashback 2 is a great multi delay that doesn't get enough credit. It uses the same/similar Sharc processor as Strymon. Add the external tap tempo and your set. My favorite delays are 2290 and Toneprint EP-3 New Tape by TC Electronic. I also have the Dunlop Echoplex delay and prefer the Flashback 2. I use it in the Loop of my Marshall.

Major respect for Dave’s opinions, but on the Dunlop you cannot completely turn the modulation off and that’s a dealbreaker for me. Once I heard that, I could not unhear it. I played a Maestro EP-3, the Dunlop, and a Belle Epoch Deluxe for hours through a true bypass looper strip. Maybe I just had a fantastic EP-3, but switching between that and the Dunlop made the Dunlop sound like a chorus pedal. LOL. The Catalinbread BED is the one to get, although NOTHING I’ve heard quite captures the magic of the real deal. Anybody reading this that hasn’t played a real EP-3 needs to go out of their way to play through one.

The celestion vintage 30s in the mesa boogie cabs 2x12 from the early 90s sounds great.the new ones sounds crap.
I added a stage of gain to a Marshall amp preamp and it caused the amp to be out of phase with my other amps in stereo or other Marshalls. When I bypass that gain stage it is in phase. I can correct this with my floor switcher phase button. Should I change that gain stage to a cathode follower gain stage to correct the phase problem in the amp?
Ah racks include Kemper, Fractal Audio Axe Fx, Line 6 and pedals also Headrush. Boards can be more expensive than these guys, altho I know you do not like modellers as amp manufacturers. I also use Devin Townsend Moer Ocean reverb/delay.
So does the dd200 have the same analog dry through path like the dd500? The dd200 seems more appealing to me for ease of controls and use and also like the drum delay so now I’m just trying to decide between these 2

My favorite Speaker is the Fame A60 Alnico. Have you ever tried it? But maybe it is not good for high Gain?!

I’m in the market for a new delay upgrading from a tc flashback 2. I was set on the boss dd200 but decided to go with the source audio nemesis. It sounds amazing on the clean channel but just doesn’t seem to gel so good with the dirty channels it just seems to be to rich and gets in the way to much or you can dial it back and it’s not there enough. I just can’t find a good balance for the dirty channels so I’m sending it back and going with the boss. Anything specific you recommend dave that works particularly well in the be 50s loop?
I should’ve went with the boss I missed the part where you recommended delays for the be 100s loop. I just got some option paralysis when I was choosing and like I said I’m not trying to trash the nemesis by any means it sounds good it just does not work the way I want it to with my dirt sounds I like to use delays as always on pretty much in everything I play besides AC/DC and certain things where you just can’t get away with it. But I like to go crazy with it to at times and the nemesis does work for that stuff but just really wasn’t doing it for me for the always on stuff

Should you run the boss delay dd500 in the effects loop or the front of the amp? I always ran my delays in the effects loop. I’m thinking about putting my carbon copy in the loop and the boss in the front of the amp. Not sure how it would sound in the front
