  • In this video, I explore the beautiful town of Homer, Alaska with my trusty Mamiya RB67 and Fuji Instax instant film. Despite the unusual warmth and lack of snow, I take advantage of the unique landscape and capture stunning shots of the town and surrounding nature. I shoot Instax film in a Mamiya RB67, a technique that creates a distinct, artistic look. Additionally, I share my thoughts on the versatility of Instax film as a photographic medium and offer tips and tricks to fellow photographers who want to experiment with it. Along the way, I also take a few snaps with an Olympus Infinite Hi-Lite AF, just for fun. This video is a perfect watch for anyone who wants to see the beauty of Alaska through the lens of an Instax camera and learn how to create unique and creative images with this popular instant film.

      @@NunoAlmeidaPhotography I'm such a sucker for the film borders. So many people say they don't add to the image, but I think the viewing experience is much different with them left on. And once again THANK YOU so much! I'm about to binge your channel and check out your work! How long have you been shooting?

      @@mediamfilm Indeed! I've been shooting for almost 12 years now, but only gave film a try about a year ago! Although I home scan everything, I never leave the borders on and I think I've been missing out! Ahh thanks! I've actually watched a few of your videos already, they've been popping up on my feed lately! How long have you been shooting film for?

      @@NunoAlmeidaPhotography Ive been shooting for 12 years as well. I learned everything I know on film but after about 7 years I picked up a digital camera [the one I used to film this video]. I also gave up on photography because I really didn't enjoy it anymore, but then I got the RB67 and started shooting film again. I realized that its not photography in general I love, but film photography. I love the process. I love dev'ing and scanning and getting to play with exposure and filters and the look of vintage lenses. I've never really been a fan of the L Series or the Sigma Art Series. New stuff is so clinical. There's just something beautiful about the old stuff. Even the lenses I filmed the video with are a full prime set from the early 70's. I never stopped shooting film, but I've been going full steam into film for the last 4 years now and I'm loving it. But I do shoot digital 5 days a week at work...

    Stunning photos, with really good exposure in general, which is tricky with Instax. I don't know how many backs you have, but do you just keep reloading the backs in the field using your changing bag? Do you usually pack away the exposed sheets and then roll them all consecutively in the Instax camera, rather then doing it after each shot? If so, have you encountered any problems from the delay between shooting and developing?

    • @mediamfilm
      @mediamfilm  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much. Yes I keep reloading in the field. I have 3 backs. I shoot all three then I go back to the car. And no I have not had any problems with the delay. Theoretically, there shouldn't be any adverse effects from waiting since the emulsion has been chemically altered by light exposure. I'm unlikely to believe any time delay would change the chemical composition of the exposed film as to render the dev step irregular.
      Thinking about giving it a try yourself?

    • @FerlandViolinStudio
      @FerlandViolinStudio 3 года назад +1

      @@mediamfilm Thanks for the answer. Yes, I am indeed thinking of trying this. I was mainly thinking of using it for studio work with strobes, but implementing it in the field would be great too. Right now, I only have a Yashica A TLR, so I will try it with that first. I have a potential opportunity to get an RB67 in the near future, so we will see how that goes.

    • @FerlandViolinStudio
      @FerlandViolinStudio 3 года назад

      @@mediamfilm I only have the Yashica A, which is the very basic model. It works well. The focusing screen isn't very clear, but the lens seems good. Earlier today, I made a spacer so I could line up Instax Mini inside. I tried a few shots, with great results. I am able to sync with studio strobes using my PC sync cable. Since this is a 6x6 camera, there are some black bars at the top and bottom of the Instax frame. Altogether, a successful experiment. Thank you for this video, and for the other one showing your loading/developing process!

      @@FerlandViolinStudio LOVE TO HEAR IT. I have a Rolleicord with the Rolleikin kit. The focusing screen is super dim and you can only see in the middle...but I love it. It's by far my favorite camera for going out of strolls and what not. It's sharper than any glass I've got for my RB67 and it's 30 years older haha. Plus the older stuff has the most interesting character.

    Im gonna buy a large format camera 4x5

    • @mediamfilm
      @mediamfilm  Год назад +1

      I got one for the best deal you could ever hope for, knowing I would never come across such a steal... it's still the camera that collects the most dust and I imagine that will never change. Regardless, I'm glad I have it. It's only the photos you really care about that make you want to shoot 'em on 4x5. Truth be told though...medium format can give you just as good results until you start making printed enlargements over 24 inches. Don't waste your time shooting 4x5 for social media or just to shoot it. It's way too expensive and cumbersome, plus, you can't just bring a 4x5 with you anywhere like a 35mm.

    Why bova? Try Gold 200 & say, Ilford Pan F 50.

    • @mediamfilm
      @mediamfilm  11 месяцев назад

      Because instant film? Also because of the same reason you might shoot Pro400 instead of Portra or Ektachrome instead of Provia. Every film stock has character and creates a worldly different image. And for fun, doing something different. I mean, why shoot film when digital is cheaper? There is never an answer as to 'why' in the world of art and creativity.
