MEDIAM is an ongoing project bringing light to the real ideas and feelings within art and the artist during a meta-modern age. These difficult to sort out truths, unanswerable questions, serious dilemmas, and mind turning concepts fuel the artist and remind the artist.

hope you are fine
I'm doing well. The little mini lab I started just as a side hustle has grown very fast. I just had to hire 4 people and I'm still backed up with orders. Good problems. I'd love to get back to making videos but I'm still trying not to drown in film dev's. I've got a really good video that I filmed back in February or March that I never got around to editing because that's when the lab exploded. I feel like it's a REALLY wonderful piece so I hope I'm able to share it some day. I've now hosted 2 big photo walks and started some R&D on a family of experimental film stocks called Alt+Dev by MEDIAM. I'm in preliminary testing right now and had over 70 rolls produced for large-group testing. So far so good. My goal is still to be on youtube but I'm going to work on getting the lab up and running to where I can enjoy youtube in my free time and not have the pressure of monetization.
@@mediamfilm wow, some very good news. I dont put pressure on you for a video, I was just wondering because it's been a little while without news from you. Stay focus on what is making you living. Im very happy for you.

Why bova? Try Gold 200 & say, Ilford Pan F 50.
Because instant film? Also because of the same reason you might shoot Pro400 instead of Portra or Ektachrome instead of Provia. Every film stock has character and creates a worldly different image. And for fun, doing something different. I mean, why shoot film when digital is cheaper? There is never an answer as to 'why' in the world of art and creativity.
I love this. I hope you get a million views

This is such a great video containing amazing shots. Made me so happy to find this. Thank you for sharing sir 🙌
Most certainly 🙏🏼❤️
Love the video and subbed. I have tried something similar and the results are fun. Also RIP the GOAT Superia :(
If you’re gonna shoot film, play around with it. It’s so much fun and is very much part of the joy of this old format man. Thanks for the sub, I’ll make sure it’s worth your time 🙏🏼 DUDE, superia was the goat😔. I run a film lab and every time I get a roll of it through the scanners, I cry.
@@mediamfilm I know you'll do some cool stuff so I'm looking forward to it. I do some scans for friends and friends of friends So I know the feeling lol. I have a few 3packs in the back of my fridge I don't want to shoot because I don't want it to be gone!
I wish Fuji would contract Kodak to make that instead of Fuji color 400. Although I don’t think their production line can handle that cyan layer. Fuji probably had special production lines for their 4 layer films 😔
i wish I had some 3packs...@@craynotcreigh
@@mediamfilm Yea I don't think Kodak can make it. I have bought 3 packs of Superia Premium from Japan, prices aren't terrible and it looks nice too. It is a way to still get some kind of the good stuff.
I just found you and I'm already enthralled by your work. Don't be too hard on yourself, we all miss shots, we all make mistakes, but we learn and we try again. You're awesome :)
Couldn’t agree more. Honestly, the bad rolls and the sad moments are the parts that make film as great as it is. There are actually stakes with highs and lows. Now, every time I get a bad roll I just think “well, I get to do it again.” It lets you go back and shoot something and have fun knowing you’re not even repeating yourself. And man, I’m so glad you enjoy the work. It’s a big thing to commit to a style and share it with people. It’s certainly a bit slower paced than most but I like to relax in the “stop and smell the roses” nature of life and capturing it on film. I hope you’ll stick around to see more of what I’ve got. There’s PLENTY more in store. ❤️
This was such a chill watch. Super interesting topic that I have never really thought about! (Also, the Videos Colour grade and texture; SO GOOD!! A VIBE!)
Hell Yeah! Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you, I'm really getting this grade to a solid place it seems. Once I get it to the point where it's copy/pastable for the most part, I'm hoping to offer it as a powergrade for resolve and a LUT for other applications. I'm stoked you dig the format. These vibes will continue 👌
Great, video !! I’ve seen it completely to the end. That’s a lot work taking all the pictures and then develop it, so therefore I thank you for that. Could you make a video going through the development of the film with X46,that will be very interesting . Thanks in advance.
First of all...THANK YOU. That was a super long video. I certainly didn't intend on it being over an hour. And as much work as it might be, it's fun work and it's what I'd be doing on my weekends anyhow so I figure, might as well share my results. As far as the X-46 goes...I do have the dev notes in the description if you wanna give X-46 a shot! Unfortunately, I probably won't make a video about X-46 as all the steps in the process are just 'pour chemical in, pour chemical out' so there's not really anything to show. I mean, it's basically the exact same as standard color development, you just pull the film out after the first dev and then start over as if it never happened. Doing it LOOKS the same as any film development, so as far as a visual representation of the process [a video about it] there's not much creative liberty I can take. At the end of the day, I really want my videos to be visually stunning and I don't think 8 minutes of me standing in my kitchen would check that box 😂💀 You're always welcome to shoot me a DM on IG if you want a bit more help with developing it yourself. My social info is also in the description.

YOOO, THANK YOU. To be put in a category with him. Honestly, I was developing the style of MEDIAM and I saw a GxACE video and thought...I've got more work to do. He was a big inspiration to commit to a cohesive style and move further from channels like Garinydays, Thomas Heaton, and Nick Carver. No shade to them, they're all in my top 5. But having something that is stylized and has a very clear ✨A E S T H E T I C✨ is what I wanted. Dude. You made my week!
I was also heavily inspired by Barney Arther from NegativeFeedback. Right before he left the space, the last like 10 videos he uploaded when he bought the S1H, showed a massive maturing into a more 'directed' or ✨cinematic✨ style and it just tickled all my fancies. Same with Van Neistat.

"What do we as artists possess?" For myself it's the joy of exploring and finding that extraordinary thing where some look past or may not have had the chance to look at until I was able to show them and more often than not surprise myself in the process. Your photo at 26:56 is amazing.
Dude that shot and the one right at 22:00 are my favorite from the roll. I really like that fact that I show every picture I take. It makes it clear how there’s normally only 3-5 decent images on a roll of 36. And I agree, I think your gift is your curiosity. You have the urge to seek out something when others walk past. You ask the questions when other people just accept the truth. I’m interested to see how that changes over the next 5 years. Like, you can continue to explore, but undoubtedly, you’ll find something that grips you. Stuck focused on one thing rather than general exploration. What will that thing be? What will you find in it?
Emily Dickinson's quest was truth. Poetry is truth. So maybe we look for truth and fairness. Something genuine, innocent, naive with soul and heart like a melting snow.
But is truth not subjective? I guess maybe the only real truths are universal? And those are the ones we're searching for huh? What if the goal is to inspire thought? Maybe not to decide universal truths, but instead to help others discover their own subjective truths? Sometimes both sides of a contradiction can, in turn, be true? Like the answers illustrated here, the artist must believe in themselves, but this belief may only ever be arrogant. While arrogance is a negative objectively, it may be something important or required for the artist, subjectively positive? I think poetry is not simply truth, but the ability to paint truth, no matter how ugly, beautifully. To convey thoughts or ideas in a way that can take what the artist, the original thinker, felt and transmit that to an observer. Text may transmit thoughts or ideas, but poetry can transmit feeling. I think that's what makes it art, not information. At least by Tolstoy's definition. I think our life has the potential to belong to us, but I think that requires that we spend it in service of ourselves. If you work for your own wishes, building the life you so desperately desire, then you've spent that life in service to yourself, gifting yourself with what it is you desire. I think life is not guaranteed to you, but it is gifted. An alienable right that only you can control, in a privileged sense of course. It makes me so happy to see that you spent the time to think and share your thoughts, I hope my comment sections become a regular place to do so.
@@mediamfilm truth is to be honest with ourself, I think. In photography, I dont have any answer why Im taking photographs. I like to make something beautiful from common or uglyness, even though I dont know what beauty means. I think Im trying to make trees speaking to each others, or reveals what we dont see or we forget to see. And contradiction is always more interesting than coherence. You are young and you have a mature graze, speech, or simply you are fresh but what you say in your videos are simply the heart of everything, you have that skill. And it's always very deep and you bring me inspiration and I wanna take new photographs, and never give up. Some people give up, I dont know why, it's a collective fail. Sorry for my french-english
English isn’t your first language?!? I wouldn’t have known if you didn’t say so. You come across perfectly understandable. Man, that’s such a big compliment. This channel is a combination of the things I’ve found people respond to well. Ideas and thoughts communicated in ways that help us all see things from a slightly new, yet comfortable perspective. To some degree I did feel like I could communicate well, but again, you never know if you just think you are when in reality you aren’t. So I’m glad, even in your second language, I’m communicating decent thoughts. ❤️ And I’m glad you’re not giving up. I think that I’m order to make great work, you have to spend a lifetime pursuing something. It’s a slowly but sure condition for sure.
Thanks for putting this together and sharing. Gifted myself a Mamiya RZ 67 Pro ii and figured there had to be a way to shoot Instax film without spending another $400 for an Instax back. I’ve taken 6 test shots, nothing really exciting, but I’m getting the hang of it. Big difference with the overall sharpness and quality of the images compared to the Instax camera. I have 3 film backs, so looking forward to doing multiple shots without having load each time. Anyways, thanks for sharing. Also, dig your work.
So happy to help. It's so discouraging when 99% of film photography instagram is Mamiya 7II's and all the fancy attachments. The ability to do simple 'mods' and get more a less the same results with just a bit of elbow grease, makes me wish I was around for all the 2008 photrio days hahah. My RB is what brought back my love for film. I spent years shooting film and saving for a digital camera, got a digital camera, and slowly started shooting less and less. Then I was gifted the RB and got back into film. Making the jump to MF was really fun, especially cause it was the first time I could get good scans at home. Started developing and scanning myself and the rest is history! Thank god for that camera.
My favorite part is you and Blix at the beginning! But it's all wonderful. I tried the photography path long ago. But I ended up at Petco. Cheers!

I watched up to and including most of the self-sponsor spot. I'd like to commend the sheer amount of effort that's gone into this video. Production quality is insane from such a channel of this, reaching what im guessing most content creators would be aiming for 10-20 years into their careers. That said, I just can't get along with the format. The extended pauses between the actual content I'm here to see are just way too long. They're okay as a quick moment to digest a thought, or to set a tone- as long as that's all they are. The pauses here extend beyond that and overstay their welcome. To view it from a different angle, it takes just over 10 full minutes (an entire third of the video) before you finish the intro and start discussing the headline topic which is what many people will be here for. It feels a little indulgent, sort of like the audience's time isn't being respected. As you said, give the people what they want. You don't just have to take my word for it. Try the same video but with the narration dubbed over the footage used in the pauses, or with the filler sections relegated to the end, and see how that impacts engagement and viewership. Best of luck!
Man, I appreciate your feedback but I do have to say that you’ve highlighted the point perfectly. Not all good work is easily digestible. The overcompensated RUclips persona and quick scrolling content has forced creators to act fast and work tightly in ways that cinema never does. The Hateful 8 is an 8 hour film that takes place in one room. So for you to say a 10-15 second pause doesn’t respect the viewers time is to say that the viewers are unwilling to experience down time and that the intent of the artist is not respected. You want it how you want it, your way now…you will not be made to wait or be asked to sit calmly and relaxed. I don’t want to contribute to the brash over abundance that is “content”. I’d like to see the same respect given to a RUclips as any great director. You will sit happily for 2 hours in a theater to finally understand what they director wanted you to see, but you watched half of my video and decided to tell me how I’d be better off making my work in ways that suit your desires. In no way am I upset, I think your opinion is common and valid. I don’t think I will ever be a mainstream creator because my goal is to make what I believe to be good and not what the algorithm and the trained public expects. I also want to note that my statement of giving the people what they want was a critique of artists forgoing their intention for popularity. It’s a disrespect to the artist themselves to care more about being well received than to make work they truly believe in and that the world needs. I think you’ve watched half the video and missed entirely what was being communicated. And I hope that’s not seen as disrespectful to say, I just want to clarify that you’re asking me to do what I explicitly speak out against in this video. I doubt you will, but finishing that sponsor spot, I make it clear that I’m not my own sponsor, and that it’s the patrons who supported me through my lab that made my dream of creating RUclips videos possible, so although the lab is what supports me, it’s the people who’s opportunity the lab. While I appreciate your feedback, I find it odd that you would take the time to write all this but refuse to watch the second half of the video? Especially when your goal was not to offer any honest advice but to criticize a piece of work you neither understood, nor completely consumed. Appreciated, but very misguided I feel. Like I said, I’m not upset, not even in the slightest. I genuinely enjoy this type of discourse because I don’t feel that I’m “right”..there’s always various view points and often everyone has several valid points and short comings. I would never expect to be seen as any definitive spokesperson and am very acceptant of my own possible misguided ideas or opinions. I hope I haven’t rubbed you the wrong way or discouraged you from replying further.
Also, thank you for the quality comment..I am 10 years into my career, it’s been my goal to produce RUclips pieces but I just wasn’t ever good enough to upload until now. I think what I have to say and the work I want to produce requires the appearance of authority or at least good quality, especially if I wanna make such slow content. Have you watched The Phantom Thread? It’s like that. Slow, but bold.
Fixed ya moms car today. What a wonderful woman it was a pleasure meeting her. We got on talking bout Alaska and she showed me your channel it is so beautiful there. Awesome stuff.

Awesome vid! Quick question....Let's say for instance you have a Nikon F6 & Nikon F3 (opposite ends of the spectrum) with the same glass. If you were to take a shot of the same thing, at the same settings and on the same film stock the pictures should be identical no? Basically do film cameras bodies contribute to the image or is it all about the lens & film stock? Thx in advance
GREAT QUESTION!! Nope, the camera bodies wouldn't change a thing and are purely for shutter mechanisms. Of course, once you start adding the ability to do multi-exposures, built-in light meters, and autofocus, that's when the real value comes in with film bodies. Of course with digital, it's all in the body. But in film, a 100-year-old camera and 30-year-old camera will look the same with the same lens, settings, and film stock. The camera just serves as the film transport and shutter mechanism. It's a mind-blow when you start to look at vintage camera bodies, realizing it's really just the variety in shutter speeds and compatible lenses that defines them.
@@mediamfilm Which is essentially why film cameras are never really obsolete regardless how old they are...sometimes the older the better depending on what your looking for. The same can't be said for digital. Thanks for your detailed response !
Im gonna buy a large format camera 4x5
I got one for the best deal you could ever hope for, knowing I would never come across such a steal... it's still the camera that collects the most dust and I imagine that will never change. Regardless, I'm glad I have it. It's only the photos you really care about that make you want to shoot 'em on 4x5. Truth be told though...medium format can give you just as good results until you start making printed enlargements over 24 inches. Don't waste your time shooting 4x5 for social media or just to shoot it. It's way too expensive and cumbersome, plus, you can't just bring a 4x5 with you anywhere like a 35mm.
@@mediamfilm yes medium format is the balance between 135 and 4x5. I have an Isolette III it is awesome, small size. I can afford film photography so budget is not my concern

awesome. the content but also the audio with piano. Film photography is about 'in between worlds' it does exist and it doesnt exist. My opinion. And your short movie is really a great work about it.
DUDE THE IN BETWEEN WORLDS! It’s not about capturing the world as it exists, it’s about creating a window into one that doesn’t. My goal is never to show you the world you live in, but the one in which I wish I did.
Is this an xpan-camera?
It is not!👀 it’s a Mamiya RB67, a medium format camera that shoots a 6cm x 7cm image on 120 film, that I loaded 35mm film into.
@@mediamfilm ahh, interesting.
This is my first time watching your videos, YT just sent it to my timeline.. I thought you was "William Sheepskin" at first until I listened a little more, but those cuts (j/k) are dope and your color grade is surreal.. My take away from this video is not necessarily the fact that film is better but that take advantage of the unique nature of film and let it stand out from digital..and most of all the organic elemental feel to it.. I really love your channel.. just watched a couple of your other videos.. BTW, what film back are you using to get that panorama.. Are those panoramic shots in camera or you stitched them in post?
Ahhh maannn, thank you!! Dude learning to color grade has been quite the game. Getting realistic grain is sooo difficult. And yes, that is the exact takeaway I'd hope people get. PLAY WITH FILM, do stuff only film can do. I'm glad you like more than the one video 😂. And I'm just using the regular 120 film back for the pano's. I just load a roll of 35mm in there instead of 120. I'm sure, eventually, I'll make a video about it. Everything you see on screen was captured in camera exactly as it appears on screen. No stitching.👍
@@mediamfilm Amazing... this line keeps ringing in my head everyday.. ruclips.net/video/AnG3cmh6wII/видео.html.. you've got to patent it or make it your quote.. tis really deep..
What's the line? and the ringing in your head is exactly what I hope to do. Ask questions and say things that keep our minds turning. Imagination is our greatest gift and I hope I get yours going!@@joshmcdzz6925
"A lack of understanding and subsequent exploitation keeps many photographers from capitalizing on film's greatest asset...." I have always shot at box speed and developed as instructed and I have always wondered what I stand to gain shooting film when I can replicate same in post with my digital shots but you said it.. push/pull, experiment and don't follow the cliche...
Sir, I've nothing left to teach you.@@joshmcdzz6925
Love the video so much! Thank you! Can i ask... What color grade are you using for the video? :)
Certainly! It’s all done in DaVinci. It’s all from scratch. No LUTs, no plug-ins. 90% of it was done using just the primary wheels.
What camera do you use to shoot your videos?
I’ve got a canon c300 MKII. However I will say, the look of my videos has more to do with my lenses. I’ve got a prime kit from the 60’s.
The c300 is overkill but I’m a sucker for built-in ND’s. I have a few videos I shot on my 5DMkIV back in 2020-21. Take a look at the older videos on my channel that I shot in Whittier, Homer, and Eklutna. And those were colorgraded in premiere before they added a lot of extra features.
Great job mate! Just subbed!
Thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼
You can make digital look exactly like film...color grading techniques are virtually indistinguishable with side by side comparison's. I have seen many older DP's duped and convinced they were watching classic 16mm film shots and then when told they were actually looking at digitally shot media that was tricked to look like film their minds were blown. Reasons why digital is better is the cost efficiencies to the post-workflow, ease of editing, less time taken on set reloading film mags when you can keep going take after take with digital. Film was the precursor to digital and I will always respect film...but digital is the new crowned victor in cinema/photography art.
I mean yeah sure, but once again, perfectly exposed film and perfectly exposed digital will look the same and one can be easily turned into the other. But once you start stepping outside that perfect exposure triangle, that’s where film comes to life and digital falls apart. Of course you can always expose digital perfectly in order to emulate the experimentally exposed film through post production, but that’s where digital becomes more work than film. Film is better than digital because you can simple decide to “do it wrong” to create really interesting work. With digital, there’s no changing it in camera the way you do with film. It’s all post production, and recreating redscale, crossprocess, or souping in a digital workflow is quite the task. It’s EASY with film. Also, you’re talking about industry leading colorists and seasoned DP’s…as if to say because an F1 driver can do it then who’s to say the gas car is better than electric. Using the high level industry pros as basis for discussion is to say, “the best of the best can so why can’t you?” Any average Joe can redscale their film or cross-process it, only a handful of highly skilled individuals can recreate that look in a digital post production. And to say that film is better than digital is merely in this regard. This video doesn’t talk about cost, timeline, or equipment, just creative effect. It’s a RUclips video telling people to stop shooting film at box speed, not a digital vs film comparison. I even say that If you’re going to shoot and box speed and develop as normal, digital will give you that look, and obviously at a much lower cost in the long run.
I think if anyone truly thinks film is better than digital….I want what their having. Economy and ease of access will always beat what film has going for it. I shoot my videos on a digital camera…you’d be out of your mind to try to be a RUclips who shoots on motion picture 😂 bro could you imagine?!? Kinda wanna see that.😂
Watching from Texas while sippin a Husky IPA.
Twas meant to be.
Kahleal! You're my sprocket shot hero. I absolutely love that you're making these long format, philosophical videos. This is very reminiscent of the 80s and 90s educational publications that I grew up with, and it was such a treat to watch. Looking forward to what you choose to make next. I'm definitely going to be sharing your channel to everyone I know.
DUUDDEE, that’s exactly what I’m going for. Somewhere between Mr.Rogers and Bob Ross meets RUclipsr video essay. ❤️ I had a bit in the video talking about you and the masks, but I cut for time and decided to make an entire video dedicated to sprocket shots and the process. I’m so happy to be making these videos. It feels like for the first time I’m expressing something genuine and authentic.
Will there be a video in the future of you doing the developing process?
Probably not, only because there’s so many of those videos already and I don’t have much to add. I’ll probably do one for Patreon members in the future tho.
This is fire, framing is dope, the film grade.. Can you do a video with heely's on next? Just scootin' around.
Bro, say less. This summer, it’s coming.
That's a lot of snow you must live in Alaska
Hahaha I certainly do! We got like 3 feet in a matter of 4 days. It was total chaos, that’s why I wanted to photograph it.
I just realized who this was 💀 You sarcastic SOB
Absolutely enjoyed this video as much as the others!!! Keep up the good work!
Hahah that makes one of you 💀 Visually, this video is great. The color grading is just getting better and better, but there’s something in the pacing and the inability to drift off into an alternate world I create. This video feels to much like real life and I don’t enjoy that. I like getting to craft a more dreamlike state of blissful wandering.
QUALITY ALERT! Amazing videos, i subscribed last time and now im gonna share you with my videomaking friends, keep it up i swear you'll get big fast! -tips for next video -find some movie that used some strange film teq, or strange lenses etc -shorter videos, do some details and brolls cuts -try to recreate film scenes, the one doable so work with light and comp i swear i dont know what you could do to exactly blow up, but i know you will and i want you to!
Yooo thank you soooo much!!! And I think my next video will be shorter?? But who knows. I really just let them be as long as they end up being. This video is way too long though 💀. Ideally I’d like to be at like 15-20 minutes. And thanks for the sharing!! Y’know, about the Broll, I’m not certain I’ll add it. I think that’s a big difference between how I see the world and what most RUclips videos look like. [not so much in this video, but going forward] I feel like the photos I take are the details I want people to see, the Broll, the video serves as something else that I don’t want to dilute with footage of things that don’t need to be seen. I may suffer for that, the algorithm wants what the algorithm wants, but I enjoy defying “the RUclips look”. I’ll just have to sit with fingers crossed and see how it pans out 🤷♂️
@@mediamfilm absolutely! Wish you the best going farward!
