Kahleal! You're my sprocket shot hero. I absolutely love that you're making these long format, philosophical videos. This is very reminiscent of the 80s and 90s educational publications that I grew up with, and it was such a treat to watch. Looking forward to what you choose to make next. I'm definitely going to be sharing your channel to everyone I know.
DUUDDEE, that’s exactly what I’m going for. Somewhere between Mr.Rogers and Bob Ross meets RUclipsr video essay. ❤️ I had a bit in the video talking about you and the masks, but I cut for time and decided to make an entire video dedicated to sprocket shots and the process. I’m so happy to be making these videos. It feels like for the first time I’m expressing something genuine and authentic.
Hey Kahleal, loving the work that you're doing and your approach to these videos man! I think that you're definitely doing something unique here and I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into these video essays. Well done!
QUALITY ALERT! Amazing videos, i subscribed last time and now im gonna share you with my videomaking friends, keep it up i swear you'll get big fast! -tips for next video -find some movie that used some strange film teq, or strange lenses etc -shorter videos, do some details and brolls cuts -try to recreate film scenes, the one doable so work with light and comp i swear i dont know what you could do to exactly blow up, but i know you will and i want you to!
Yooo thank you soooo much!!! And I think my next video will be shorter?? But who knows. I really just let them be as long as they end up being. This video is way too long though 💀. Ideally I’d like to be at like 15-20 minutes. And thanks for the sharing!! Y’know, about the Broll, I’m not certain I’ll add it. I think that’s a big difference between how I see the world and what most RUclips videos look like. [not so much in this video, but going forward] I feel like the photos I take are the details I want people to see, the Broll, the video serves as something else that I don’t want to dilute with footage of things that don’t need to be seen. I may suffer for that, the algorithm wants what the algorithm wants, but I enjoy defying “the RUclips look”. I’ll just have to sit with fingers crossed and see how it pans out 🤷♂️
Hahah that makes one of you 💀 Visually, this video is great. The color grading is just getting better and better, but there’s something in the pacing and the inability to drift off into an alternate world I create. This video feels to much like real life and I don’t enjoy that. I like getting to craft a more dreamlike state of blissful wandering.
This is my first time watching your videos, YT just sent it to my timeline.. I thought you was "William Sheepskin" at first until I listened a little more, but those cuts (j/k) are dope and your color grade is surreal.. My take away from this video is not necessarily the fact that film is better but that take advantage of the unique nature of film and let it stand out from digital..and most of all the organic elemental feel to it.. I really love your channel.. just watched a couple of your other videos.. BTW, what film back are you using to get that panorama.. Are those panoramic shots in camera or you stitched them in post?
Ahhh maannn, thank you!! Dude learning to color grade has been quite the game. Getting realistic grain is sooo difficult. And yes, that is the exact takeaway I'd hope people get. PLAY WITH FILM, do stuff only film can do. I'm glad you like more than the one video 😂. And I'm just using the regular 120 film back for the pano's. I just load a roll of 35mm in there instead of 120. I'm sure, eventually, I'll make a video about it. Everything you see on screen was captured in camera exactly as it appears on screen. No stitching.👍

"A lack of understanding and subsequent exploitation keeps many photographers from capitalizing on film's greatest asset...." I have always shot at box speed and developed as instructed and I have always wondered what I stand to gain shooting film when I can replicate same in post with my digital shots but you said it.. push/pull, experiment and don't follow the cliche...
Awesome vid! Quick question....Let's say for instance you have a Nikon F6 & Nikon F3 (opposite ends of the spectrum) with the same glass. If you were to take a shot of the same thing, at the same settings and on the same film stock the pictures should be identical no? Basically do film cameras bodies contribute to the image or is it all about the lens & film stock? Thx in advance
GREAT QUESTION!! Nope, the camera bodies wouldn't change a thing and are purely for shutter mechanisms. Of course, once you start adding the ability to do multi-exposures, built-in light meters, and autofocus, that's when the real value comes in with film bodies. Of course with digital, it's all in the body. But in film, a 100-year-old camera and 30-year-old camera will look the same with the same lens, settings, and film stock. The camera just serves as the film transport and shutter mechanism. It's a mind-blow when you start to look at vintage camera bodies, realizing it's really just the variety in shutter speeds and compatible lenses that defines them.
@@mediamfilm Which is essentially why film cameras are never really obsolete regardless how old they are...sometimes the older the better depending on what your looking for. The same can't be said for digital. Thanks for your detailed response !
Probably not, only because there’s so many of those videos already and I don’t have much to add. I’ll probably do one for Patreon members in the future tho.
The c300 is overkill but I’m a sucker for built-in ND’s. I have a few videos I shot on my 5DMkIV back in 2020-21. Take a look at the older videos on my channel that I shot in Whittier, Homer, and Eklutna. And those were colorgraded in premiere before they added a lot of extra features.
awesome. the content but also the audio with piano. Film photography is about 'in between worlds' it does exist and it doesnt exist. My opinion. And your short movie is really a great work about it.
DUDE THE IN BETWEEN WORLDS! It’s not about capturing the world as it exists, it’s about creating a window into one that doesn’t. My goal is never to show you the world you live in, but the one in which I wish I did.
You can make digital look exactly like film...color grading techniques are virtually indistinguishable with side by side comparison's. I have seen many older DP's duped and convinced they were watching classic 16mm film shots and then when told they were actually looking at digitally shot media that was tricked to look like film their minds were blown. Reasons why digital is better is the cost efficiencies to the post-workflow, ease of editing, less time taken on set reloading film mags when you can keep going take after take with digital. Film was the precursor to digital and I will always respect film...but digital is the new crowned victor in cinema/photography art.
I mean yeah sure, but once again, perfectly exposed film and perfectly exposed digital will look the same and one can be easily turned into the other. But once you start stepping outside that perfect exposure triangle, that’s where film comes to life and digital falls apart. Of course you can always expose digital perfectly in order to emulate the experimentally exposed film through post production, but that’s where digital becomes more work than film. Film is better than digital because you can simple decide to “do it wrong” to create really interesting work. With digital, there’s no changing it in camera the way you do with film. It’s all post production, and recreating redscale, crossprocess, or souping in a digital workflow is quite the task. It’s EASY with film. Also, you’re talking about industry leading colorists and seasoned DP’s…as if to say because an F1 driver can do it then who’s to say the gas car is better than electric. Using the high level industry pros as basis for discussion is to say, “the best of the best can so why can’t you?” Any average Joe can redscale their film or cross-process it, only a handful of highly skilled individuals can recreate that look in a digital post production. And to say that film is better than digital is merely in this regard. This video doesn’t talk about cost, timeline, or equipment, just creative effect. It’s a RUclips video telling people to stop shooting film at box speed, not a digital vs film comparison. I even say that If you’re going to shoot and box speed and develop as normal, digital will give you that look, and obviously at a much lower cost in the long run.
I think if anyone truly thinks film is better than digital….I want what their having. Economy and ease of access will always beat what film has going for it. I shoot my videos on a digital camera…you’d be out of your mind to try to be a RUclips who shoots on motion picture 😂 bro could you imagine?!? Kinda wanna see that.😂

Love the video so much! Thank you! Can i ask... What color grade are you using for the video? :)
Certainly! It’s all done in DaVinci. It’s all from scratch. No LUTs, no plug-ins. 90% of it was done using just the primary wheels.
You keep Changing your pants! Great video btw!

Great job mate! Just subbed!

What camera do you use to shoot your videos?
I’ve got a canon c300 MKII.
However I will say, the look of my videos has more to do with my lenses. I’ve got a prime kit from the 60’s.

It is not!👀 it’s a Mamiya RB67, a medium format camera that shoots a 6cm x 7cm image on 120 film, that I loaded 35mm film into.
