One good thing for gas mileage is puting an electric fan kit on. It reduces engine stress on pump because no bolted fan on pulley, it frees some horsepower too. I installed a Flexalite kit because the shroud looks very Jeep genuine and it is really well constructed. But I did not used the temperature module that comes with it ( a sensor to stick in the radiator grill ) instead I installed a thermal switch set to 95°c on 90°c off that is thread on a CNC machined hose male/male union. I cut the lower radiator hose in the middle to install it and the running is optimum I do not have those big temperature drops I used to have when thermostat was opening it stays still and engine warms faster on winter !
Thank you for this video. I was getting raw fuel coming out of my exhaust. I actually took my thermostat out 8 months ago and and we'll have been getting overwhelmed with fumes.. Did not know that the engine had to be warm
My 2004 BMW 325i only got 15 MPG since I bought it 5 years ago. I cleaned the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR and I'm getting around 30+ now!!! (It never threw a fault code for anything. Including Oxygen Sensors.)
I knew from the beginning before I bought my Jeep it was a gas gutter , that's why I have a secondary Toyota Prius hybrid that's why I never complain about how much my Jeep drinks fuel. That's how see it ...
JEEP Just empty every pocket Klondike mine easy to work on. Lotta fun 15 mpg, temp 190 212 normal operatic temp with functioning cooling system under pressure not a bad thing to run a lil under that. You don't want it running that hot in summer f u can help it. Increases oil temp, thin oil out
That makes since , i just fixed my ac , it got hot in sw florida , started pulling my little landscape trailer w/ scag mower , and i got a check engine light come on , i was at 22.8 mpg average , i dropped to 15.6 on my intrument cluster , i'll look into that thermostat .. thanx
Just swapped my 160 stat to a 195, it's November in MD now, need some cabin heat in my 1990 4.2 Wrangler, my temp gauge is right where yours is and still chilly in the cab, funny,a 195 in my 4.0 2001 Cherokee is right at 210.....hmm?
I get 10 mpg on my wj that is an all time 4 with 30s 4 inch lift with a roof rack that has a tire on it so 10mg for ur jeep is fine especially on how old it is
No reason to not want to maximize milage especially if it's an issue like a stuck open thermo. Even if it's 1 or 2 mpg, that's still better than nothing
A 180 stat, or even better a 160 stat, makes more power AND better gas mileage BUT the computer must be tuned so it doesn't think the motor is cold. Jay Greene racing try him if you want to keep your 160 or 180 stat and get more power and better gas mileage.
Question: have you looked at your spark plugs? I did the same thing with the water pump and thermostat. My spark plugs are running rich because there is black carbon on them right away. I'll need to put a higher thermostat in mine as well.
It has been a while but I did not look at the spark plugs when I did the change. Probably should have but it was running smooth so did not think of it.
@@FidesLaborFuturum read the resistence of the coolant temp sensor with a multimeter and get a resistor of the same value, put it in parallel between the temp sensor wires, that will raise the temp reading by half, i dont know where you live but this trick only works if the ambient temp is above 15-20 degree celsious, if you live in a cold area is best to leave it alone

I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler that has a really bad heat soak problem. She keeps shutting off when I’m idle. I was wondering if the throttle needed cleaning (I’ve had the car for almost a year) and if so , can i clean the throttle by putting premium gas ?
No fuel goes through the throttle body, just air. If you want to clean it then pull it off and clean it. Very easy. I doubt that is your problem though. You need to be looking at your cooling system. Check your fan clutch and your radiator for cold spots. Those are common cooling issues that are easy to solve.
Not likely, heat soak in essence is vapor lock, the fuel in the fuel rail has turned to vapor due to the high temps on that side of the engine compartment, there are excellent videos here on RUclips that have solutions, check them out but hurry, small content contributers are likely to be deleted in early December
There are so many factors that go into gas mileage it is hard to say but if you have inline 6 cylinder it will run a long time and it is inexpensive to maintain. It does not get great the mileage modern cars do but it is an engine that was designed in the 70's and technology has come a long way.
@@brad300ZXS16 I’ve come to the conclusion. That so many people buy a Jeep for the looks & the name! If you want an off-road vehicle with reasonable fuel mileage. Then buy four-cylinder Ford Ranger & add 4x4 & a locker! Perhaps you need on a Ford ranger is a mild lift kit, a good locker, a good winch & some good beefy off-road tires! Also an electric tire pump is a good idea!
Wow. You have AC. And heat. And a working gas gauge. Super fancy compared to mine!
Practically a luxury vehicle for a YJ with those features working, isn't it.
Front dash blowers have never worked in mine
I'm on my 5th 1 and it finally has all 3 as well. I'm still sometimes lime holy shit

i guess it is pretty off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream new movies online?

I have an 05 grand Cherokee and I get like 8-10 city and at best 12 highway. It’s HORRIBLE esp now with gas prices where they’re at 😩
Did you find a solution ?
JEEP

Thanks for this vid, will do this myself as I'm having huge fuel economy issues like you were. Running the same temp stat as well lol
HamishW96 So glad this helped you out. Hopefully it is the ticket like it was for me.

i have a 97 xj lifted 5.5 inch on 35s and i still pull 17-20 mpg
Also use higher grade of fuel u will get even.better milage
Number 2 is just right not high test not regular medium grade
All these changes adds up

I get 9.7 MPG on my 06 Jeep commander V8 :(. Mostly city driving.

A good job 👍💯🐬😎
Yes all mopars have to run hot to produce grate milage if it's not hot enough it will.give u shiity milage especially whe it's below 30 degrees
That will teach you thinking you have a better idea
We have a lot of hot days here in the SW. I will keep a look at my gas usage but I dont think this will be a problem 9 months out of the year.

I had this same problem, replaced thermostat as well as the housing and did not improve MPG. I am at operating temperatures now.
Parallel resistance across the coolant temp sensor to raise the temp reading to the ecu is much easier.
my thoughts excatly, you can fine tune it from the driver seat at anytime...
@@omegarugal9283 newbie here, how would that be done? my 2011 jeep has insanely bad mpg so i have to try something lol

The Wrangler is such a brick it will never get good mileage but you are right the 15 is a good target.
It’s ridiculous! A six cylinder getting worse miles per gallon then the 5.3 L Chevy 1500 long bed I used to have!

Some factory info for some early model Jeeps 4.0 210 on the thermostat. I've had them at 195 right now mine is the 210 thermostat I live in Michigan
Manifold temperature sensor.
My 88yj with a carb gets 15 mpg, so you doing well.
went from 17mpg to 9mpg no bad idle no misfire, found a disconnected vaccume hose, plugged it back in.. no change. should I reset the pcm?
You can always reset the pcm and it might help. Are you pulling any codes? That would be the first place to start looking.
StarkReality no codes, stuck injector
mine was a fuel pump going out the fuel pressure is too low made the gas mileage dropped dramatically
Did you ever find the fix?
I've been getting 6.1 miles 💀
Ouch. With upgraded injectors I am now getting a solid 15 and I am on 33's with 4:10 gears.
StarkReality the Jeep Liberty sucks 😖
I just checked my mpg and it's 7.9.

Mine is a 96 jeep cherokee having same issue could the MAP sensor be doing the same problem.
Symptoms of a bad MAP would be a little different but a bad coolant temperature sensor would be similar.
StarkReality what mpg on a 1987 grand wagonner
I get 6.9 mpg in my 2000 xj
My 98 Grand Cherokee is only averaging 14 mpg. Figure the motor probably needs a tune up or is just worn out. I will probably never buy another Jeep.

So true.
People don’t buy Jeeps to be economic, or to drive “green”, it’s an experience of pure pleasure.

Cry babies, just fix it or better yet sell it to someone cheap they will fix it and love it
