- Grady Martin provided the great guitar work on Marty Robbins masterpiece 'El Paso' and this is one version of two that Grady recorded. One of the all time great American guitarists, he preferred to stay in the background personally, but professionally he was right to the fore playing on many, many great records such as 'Oh Pretty Woman', 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' and 'Don't Worry.' He recorded with legends like Bing Crosby, Elvis, Patsy Cline, Johnny Horton, Brenda Lee and many more. His best work, he said himself was probably when he played on Marty Robbins recording sessions. A true guitar legend who embellished many records throughout his career.

Mr. Martin has always been my favorite guitar man. Always.
Everyone, this is my grandfather. My name is Leand Martin, and this man, this superb musician, was one of my many inspirations to get into music. Unfortunately, I didn't know that he or my father, Joe Martin, were musicians until after they'd passed on from this world, but they both motivated me to pursue music, even if it wasn't in country. I'm currently working on my first album with hopes of recording, producing and publishing it sometime this summer, and there will be many more to come, all because of Dad and Grandpa instilling that mindset into me.
Your grandfather has been my favorite guitarist since I was 5, I am now approaching sixty.
Your granddad played on one of my sessions. Keep in mind that he was also a great rocker. He played lead on the greatest rock and roll ever made, "The Train Kept a Rolling" by Johnny Burnette. Listen to it! That song influenced every rock guitarist in the UK, namely Jeff Beck and Jimmy Paige, and hundreds of others. He could played ANY kind of music. Marty Robbins told me that Grady Martin was the BEST in the world. And he meant it.
Your dad has influenced more guitar players than you could count.
Leand, this is SO interesting as just this morning, a friend and I drove out to Hopper Cemetery to visit your Papaw's grave. We took each other's picture standing beside his headstone. Each 2 or 3 weeks, I try to plan something that my guitar teacher and I can enjoy together, always a guitar-themed outing. That's what we did this morning. BTW, I'm 69 years old and just took up guitar about 18 months ago. All the best to you, My Friend.
SkarekroThaJuggalo so sorry you could not have experienced part of that life. What a great story.
Grady Martin is one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. Period.
Though I loved Marty Robbins and his voice, I've long believed that without Grady Martin's back-up, El Paso would not have been the hit that it was.
Grady was THE guitar player back in the 50s and 60s!
Along with the other cats in the "A Team", we've heard them on countless records... Many hits, many favorites!
He'll always be my musical Hero.
Marty's El Paso was one of the all time masterpieces and in no small part due to Grady's superlative taste.
Often it is the background studio musician that adds that certain ingredient that seasons the vocals of the performer making a song unforgettable!
Thanks Grady for wonderful performances and the humility to stand in the background.
Beautiful..... Simply beautiful.
It's just lovely !
Grady Martin has brought the best in this instrumental of "El Paso".
Grady Martin's playing on El Paso is exquisite.
Hello Queen, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the Virus??
@@user-px4iu1gx8c what virus?
@@QueenVelveeta I mean the COVID-19 virus. I hope you’re safe from it?
I have played guitars for some sixty years now and am only now beginning to be able to approach some of the songs of Grady Martin---after 60 years!!! He is one of those artists who quickly become national treasures, and yet, he was always quite pleased to remain humbly in the background Grady, you were, and are, a legendary musical GIANT! Wish you were still with us!
My all time guitarist. I am 76.
Grady Martin was in Willie Nelson's band for several years. I saw them in 1981 at Floores' Country Store near San Antonio. (Grady released a scarce 10" Decca Lp record in the 1950's that is hotter than his usual 12" stuff. He could pick it all.)
I saw them at NY's Radio City Music Hall - where, unfortunately, the sound system was terrible. During one song, the lead guitarist stepped forward and delivered a stunning solo that was easily the high point of the show. I had no idea who he was, looked into it and...it was Grady. I was thrilled. I said to my friend, "A genius is a genius is a genius."
Who could possibly dislike this.....Grady Martin was a bad ass on the guitar.
i think i carry the torch of my father very well
My good friend Henry Jerome hired Grady Martin to play guitar an on may of the productions done at Owen Bradley Studios when Henry managed Johnny Burnette and the Rock'n Rill Trio. Grady will always the best and no one can take his place at his musicianship.
This Song Remains Me Of Me And My Love Ben Cooper, Ben Cooper Is The Most Handsomest Cowboy In The World ❤
... and with Marty a perfect compliment ... both ways.
Those high notes get me every time! Very nice.
My all time guitarist with Jerry Kennedy, Jimmy Capps, Harold Bradley, Chet Atkins...Frettedresophonic68
One of the best 🥂👍👍
legend..period.
grady kills it on Big Iron
ahead of his time
subtle but amazing . the fills are absolutely delicious. Most folks don't listen to the guitar work but is about as perfect as can be.
Thanks for sharing. Amazing sound
Thanks chkjns for sharing. Great!
thats a great list of the greats . Jimmy still on the CFR Bill Anderson vids. Awesome guitartist
Thanks for the share, my friend chkjns. I appreciate this kind of music.
Awesome!!!
To hear this version if it was the isolate track just so good .
Very nice, Dave - cheers, Les.
Love Grady's playing!!! I use do not know who backed up Marty Robbins for a while. But, when I found out who it was I have always been a fan of Grady. Did he play many falmico stuff for Marty? I know he also played for Elvis Presley, and Johnny Horton. Two other big people I love.
TAkridge Grady was on many hit records by top artists during his career, but he preferred to stay in the background unlike Chet Atkins who he was probably equal to. Sadly, as far as I know there's not a single CD of Grady's available which is sad.
+Mark Sherer BOOOO !!! you show your lack of knowledge !!!
Grady's Best guitar playing wasn't even on big records. Hear him on Wayne walkers all I can do is cry, johnny brunette trio or buddy hollys rock around with ollie vee.
dear mosrite60 :many thanks for your friendly words. I possess the totally collection of all dvd's from CFR & Larry country dinners. I play (very bad) in exactly the same style -and same tunes as Jimmy since...1960. I hear all studio aces but it's only since CFR i has to opportunity to "see" Jimmy play.Happy New Year. JO "short hand & fingers"LUTTRINGER (the nickname is from Grady Martin; it's the reason he found me one DelVecchio "short scale" bei G. gruhn in NASHVILLE september 1991.
Jo,
nice info about the DelVecchio. Grady was a fantastic player. Also Jimmy, Leon and "Spider" were a superb trio on the Opry. They knew how to support the musicians. Not sure where Leon is now. Jimmy doing well with CFR. That's one guitar player who doesn't waste notes. Just sooooooo smooth with the fill-ins!
Mosrite60
great
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys off to my left ride a dozen or more
Shouting and shooting I can’t let them catch me I have to make it to Rosa’s back door
I didn't know that!!
I bought an old Red Foley songbook and found Grady's signature in it, Of course I knew what a great guitarist he was. I'l treasure this
Does anyone know why he left session work in 1978 and started touring again. The references I read made it seem as if he was fired from the studios.
Great*****
Very good guitarist
nice
Hello Charlotte, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the Virus??
Fantastic guitar work by someone who is not well known.
Hello Casey, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the Virus??
@@user-px4iu1gx8c doing great thanks. Same for you I hope.
then be proud
Please could somebody tell me who the band is backing Grady Martin? Wonderful 'Tex-Mex' sounding band, but I can't find out what the band's name is! :-( First time I've heard Grady Martin - can't believe I've missed him all these years!
+nickthebottlewasher Nashville studio musicians can rise to any occasions. Some are Nashville symphony musicians and some are at the other end of the spectrum.
He's the most tasteful guitar player that ever sit in a recording studio: a master genius.
did he also play on the Alamo by Marty?
what a feel grady had..prefer the rockabilly though 5*****
