The only reason I keep waiting for the perfect fine-tuned controller to come out is because they handle multiple instances. If I could find a generic midi controller that worked well across multiple channels I would definitely prefer that. The closest I ever got was the Novation Nocturn, but even that was a bit of a slog with the wrapper plugins and what not.

@@GaragebandandBeyond the experience of making it actually doesn't count in regard to the music unless it changes it. For someone who never used physical faders they never had to make an adjustment like those who used them in the past. If you're a good engineer having physical faders should make no difference on your end product. It may not be how you ideally would like to work but your ears are the ones doing the job.

    • @GaragebandandBeyond

@@matmurk8536 If you produce as much music as I do, the experience of making it most definitely can affect the end results. When creating recordings is uncomfortable after hours and hours of work, engineers end up taking liberties which a lot of us would call lazy instead of proper. The toll it can take on your body after decades is not to be taken lightly.
If you've never had the privilege of turning knobs or moving faders, I'd say "don't knock it until you've tried it".

I've used all kinds of gear and have spent tens of thousands of dollars on it. You got used to using faders and knobs to mix and produce your music so you believe it to be a downgrade or disservice to work without them, but for those whom never have or dare I say it prefer to work without them it is not a downgrade. Especially when you consider they have Slate Ravens and touchscreen setups nowadays. To each their own of course. Remember that due to the nature of compression and limiting without level matching/makeup gain the original will be louder. Due to the way our ears work 90% of the time we will like what ever is louder, interesting when looking at marketing for almost every plugin/hardware unit. Tricks us into thinking it is better than it is.

@@KarlClarkeMusic but layering effects over a mastered track isn't much help. And that's the key word, "mastered". The song was done, adding things to it will definitely make it worse. I don't like the release settings in the first song, that doesn't have to be gain matched to tell. I know that this was just supposed to be a demonstration of the thing and not to be judged by the songs we hear but by it's usefulness and for us to hear how it stretch it's legs. So good stuff.

I've been looking at generic midi controllers on Amazon. It's kinda amazing how cheap some controllers are (surely not the best quality, just like these). $20usd for a 64 pad controller with rgb lights in each pad. Similar price for generic controllers with faders, knobs, and keys. If we wanted to make our homemade controller super fancy, tiny 1080p color screens can be had for $30 or $40usd. Coming up with a way to mount the screen in a way that resembles an actual product would be the hardest part. And using something like autohotkey as a way to configure the "software", one could easily make remappable and hotswappable midi templates for it. If only I had some free time to do this. It'd be a fraction of the cost and a lot of fun to make.

I would only use their reverb (DVR250-DT) and delay unit (TC2290-DT.)
It makes sense for it to be hardware especially for live tracking. Bit like how the Lexicons are on virtually every console.
The way these compressors and EQ's are done seems more annoying to use than just your mouse in a plugin.
Also when you buy both compressors, you are on the price of the Softube Console 1 which is worth it way more for probably most people since you get the entire channelstrip on hardware.

    Honesty appreciation... you rock!
I have always wondered why companies don't make dedicated controllers... I'm thinking with this myself is that the price is a bit silly.
Lookatthefetureset of controllers and included software to get an idea that this seems like a badly thrown ball.
At that price range if you look at an AVID Artist control, where you're controlling whatever plugin and multiple other things at the original sell price of £1000 (Now around £500 secondhand) you're not really getting much with these in comparison.
I doubt they would be a buy for a budget studio and they don't seem to be offering enough for a professional studio.
Broadcast maybe, not some much with the control because any controller could do that but the metering is good.
In a studio, you're already going to have metering on your screen, probably in the broadcast also... if it's radio that is.
It would make sense if these plugins had become staples in studios first, but they're not... so I'm confused, who are they for?
Someone who only swears by their plugins?

If I can have a better featured and quality limiter than the Pro-L2 with even minor hardware control to help with that process, that's definitely significant enough to make a purchase.

This was an interesting concept but a definite no for me. The first company who really nails a plugin controller with great feeling high quality pots with take all my money. I'm talking shadow hills / overstayer pots standard. But until then...

The controllers look pretty nice but sadly they require their own plugin. I would prefer a universal control device that uses the generic mackie remote protocol. I don’t know how feasible that would be now I come to to think of it.

    • @shayneoneill1506
      @shayneoneill1506 2 года назад

As someone who's built my own controllers and had to learn the Mackie protocol (It is *very* poorly documented, so this involved spending a lot of time with a midi monitor reverse engineering how the trusty old Mackie worked) , it probably wont work. There is SOME accomodation in the protocol for plugins, but its really more of a case of it hijacking the pan knobs and sending messages to the display strip. But theres no standardization beyond that. Some daws do useful stuff with it, most don't. Honestly, Softube has this market cornered. But yeah we absolutely need a standard for this kinda stuff. The problem is it seems music industry suck at protocols. OSC should have been the all dominating godzilla standard, but it left so much to implementation its far less useful than old fashion midi. Unfortunately its main alternative Midi-RTP is horrible, encapsulating Midi inside a protocol designed for video conferencing which makes it insanely complicated and so nobody except apple uses it.
I honestly think its something the open source community should do. Put together a community of tinkerers and something like the devs from ardour, and maybe the reaper guys (not open source, but very community oriented) and just work out what needs to go on top of Midi 2 to get all these things together so plugin makers know how to standardise and hardware manufacturers know what to do to support that standard.

Just to add some background information... I STILL use a TC Electronic G-System in my guitar rig simply because it sounds good enough, the switching capabilities are great, and to build something similar around a Boss ES-8 or whatever that has the same functionality would be VERY expensive.
      That said...
I have NO idea why they insist on making their controls with every product so obtuse!! They have the multi-band compressor in this vid, why limit the functionality by imposing the weird band interaction scheme rather than making them independent like everyone else?!
And in the case of my G-System, why am I setting parameters like Shape and Colour for the reverbs, instead of adjusting parameters that tell me what they're actually doing?!
TC needs to STOP trying to be unique, and START being more user friendly with their parameters.
Just make good sounding products that don't require me to know what blue tastes like to make them do what I want them to do!!

      That’s not a fair statement.
There’a hell of a lot that goes into inventing, patenting, development, creating the product and packaging.... all that and then the “crap shoot” of actually making money from it !!!?!???!? Crazy
So sending out samples for peer and pro reviews is a great way to:
      1. Spread the word with free advertising
      2. Find flaws and suggestions for your product (hey Pro Tools are you listening?🤪)
3 And again, increase sales by increased awareness.
It’s always easy to be an outside observer/ critic. But once you get in that game you start to realize how deep the waters are. 😊❤️🎶

do we need everything you run the sound through? we did not need all this in the 70's and 80's. the focus should be on the best possible sound quality! much of today's mussik has poor sound quality!
loudness war and dynamic compression ruin the sound!
I do not think the sound quality of studio equipment needs to be any better than much else.
if you have 10 sound modules, you run through 10 preamplifiers!
