- In Episode 2 of Made In South Africa, filmmaker Jason Hearn heads from Cape Town up the coast to Durban, to Cave Rock. Lifelong local and former World Championship Tour competitor Ricky Basnett gives us an insider's look at the rough-around-the-edges. tight-knit crew of surfers whose lives have been shaped around, and defined by, Cave Rock. From true OG Rudy Palmboom to world-renowned photographer Chris Van Lennep to World Champion Shaun Tomson, the wave that ties their lives together is Cave Rock. Next week, Hearn spends some time with one of the first - and still the best - free surfers on the planet, Frankie Oberholzer, and his ultra-stylish son, Koby.

I'm from South Africa and my uncle is Shane thorn can't wait to hit waves like this again
No ways I feel bad he has someone in his family with that pfp he ripped and was a big druggie a while ago
This was great!!
It’s classic how Shaun was talking about that dude getting barrelled and coming out with dry hair.
It was something my friends and I aimed at growing up was to get barrelled and coming out with dry hair as it’s the ultimate.
Although I still haven’t managed it
Ah bru the memories...I used to live in Pinetown and could either go the main highway to Durbs or the back highway to the Bluff...being a firefighter at that time also meant 4 days on 4 days off so no end to having time to surf. I love seeing Shaun Thompson as well cos he once gave me a klap at Bay after he dropped in on me and i swore at him, I have never disrespected a bally ever again so in essence he gave me a life lesson that day and I love him for it. Congrats on a brilliant production Mr Hearn , we've had good times in France and Morocco with Sloppy and the boys , I hope you are well Doctor B...Shaun G
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my password. I love any help you can give me
@Casen Brixton Instablaster =)
@Beau Ahmir i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Beau Ahmir It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
@Casen Brixton you are welcome xD
lapping up the SA episodes thanks Red Bull
This brought up a bunch of wonderful Zigzag memories. Jason Hearn you're tops man. Dan Redman is also still scary good.
Ricky Basnett channeling his inner Kid Rock Zef
Rough and tough and from a dream house on a hill overlooking one of the best waves in the planet. Rough gig.
lol yep should change it to "lucky and privileged"
Ja boet, that is some larney house he was living in.
I was expecting some dog town type dudes in South Africa lol
Thanks for the memories. Paddling skiing at the Bluff in the late 70's when the easterly wind was blowing, Larmont Hotdog ski. Would not risk bigger than about 8 foot waves. Wipeouts were painful!!!
"it's been known as a superfood"... lol... yeah Ricky
If u have a babalas maybe 😂
@@skellator4848 That's Ricky every day.
Okes are chowing it before the Olympics bru
Superfood. Whatevs Ricky. I use a fork and one hand by the way.
Isn’t it actually Brighten Beach and not Ancties? The Rock just 100m north from the tidal pool has a little cave in the front of it where I used to make a fire and braai bread and bake potatoes in tinfoil.
And in the late 70’s, the local saying was “ I’m rough n tuff because I come from the Bluff and smoke that stuff” 🤣
Heaviest wave that I surfed whilst living in Umhlanga Rocks/Natal area.
Shaun and the bush behind became one.
Best surfing mentor Rudy Palmboom, he motivated me to catch awesome waves at Cave, in front of the tidal pool. Best barrels of my life. Awesome video. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you for this series!
Epic stuff thank you Red Bull!
What a great documentation!
12:06 I need that music pls.
Find the music?
Blake Rudkin Shazam won‘t help.
Noice! I love the mix of newer and older footage. A key part of any surf story is the transition to the next generation. 🤙🤙
Great documentary .... i remember my first crunching barrel at the rock ...awesome break ....lekka my bru !!
dang everyones just gonna act like that dudes not rocking a floral print shirt in front of those damn bushes...haha how did noone shooting this not notice that...
drew pickles freaked me out too
Bluff camos... 👍👌😊
😂😂
Got the Tatts to prove it! Rough and tough and from the mansion with a breakfast deck overlooking the surf with a personal path from the mansion to the beach... hehe .. don't look like that nose blocked to many punches .. nice style in barrel but. Epic wave!
SA is tough in general. First settlers constantly fought for survival. The boer wars. Apartheid. They fought the border war well into the nighties. Basically young boys straight from school went and died in that damn desert. Lashing at school was also common well into the nighties. In Europe you would have gone to jail as a teacher for that. Survival is hard in SA. Today white farmers are frequently murdered out of racism.
Unfortunately, the video does not really elaborate on this, but the Bluff is in the vicinity of the Harbor and a working class area. Not too long ago there were a lot of drugs and violence in the area, it was not considered as a good neighbourhood. Just as virtually all of SA, it cannot be considered as safe in a European sense. Life changing crime happens frequently. White South Africans are being discriminated against work wise and struggle to make a living.
In a nutshell, don’t judge a book from its cover.
hahah !
I'm from Durban and you're absolutely right. Dude grew up quote privileged it seems and they going on about being rough and tough. Too many owes from the bluff think just because they come from the bluff it means something
You want rough and tough go to joburg south. Now that's rough and tough
Dudley Landsberg: Wow, that’s a standard. What place in a first or second world country could compete with SOWETO?
Used to body board and spearfish cave rock back in the 80's
60 years old and still charging those waves
Very nice good memories of my home
Loving these SA vids!
Yoh, so so seeeek! Well done mense.
Cave Rock doco without a mention of the bodyboarders that charge the place? Come on now. How about a mention for Andre Botha etc.
Yep, and before Andre Botha, there were some other BBers who used to local at Cave... I remember many days with just my friends and I and Rudy, in the 80s. And 10ft sets with Shaun stoked like a grom out there with us, and all the other surfers lining the road, too freaked to come out.
And the first time I saw Alistair Taylor paddle out, Nigel Tarboton, Per Lofstrand, Mike van Huysteen. Watch their eyes get as big as saucers when they saw the barrels up close. :D
It's been a long time since then :)
@@fuddam haha saw mike van huyssteen get punched in the face at brighton beach backline for disrespecting a local surfer for dropping in on his wave
@simon Mathews Too funny! He tried to drop in on me at a big day at Cave, when Rudy was out with some of his friends. Next thing I heard was a bellow from a huge muscle-bound guy, telling Mike to get off my wave, threatening all sorts of violence. It seems we must have served our time enough to warrant that 'protection', lol. I was literally lmao 😁👍👍
Surfed the rock from 1967 and always called it SA's pipeline. Used to live in Woodlands 10min's away
So epic @redbullsurfing this was my go to spot when I was studying back in 2000, such a fun wave and got to surf a lot with Andre Botha. Funny story, I burned my mate on a solid 8' set (he was never going to make it out) then he took like 8 waves on the head and he still hasn't forgiven me to this day ha aha ha. (He really was never gonna make it out) Thanks for the nostalgia trip guys and gals, so epic Bru!
Dick! Move!! Dick EXCUSS!
I used to spend Christmas on the bluff as a kid. Best memories. RIP SA.
To be honest they started portraying the one guy from the bluff like he was from hard times then they show him in his mansion on the hill. A product from his environment they said. Lol. But that meat bun we need them over here
Wow , this video makes me so proud to be a Durban surfer !!
How many of those Van Lennep photos were passed up by magazines to show California surfers doing chop-hops in blown out 2 ft. surf? I'm sure the guys surfing couldn't care less.
I was always a little intimidated by the place as a goofy, however, the Rock would sometimes throw you into a backhand barrel even if you did not intend it. Also, got hurt and worked over a few times!
I’ve been looking forward to this!
never heard of bunny chow . now i want bunny chow .
Tears of Joy Boys.
Ohhhw roti boys boss. Wasn't expecting to see them here😂😂
I remember one early glassy afternoon in ' 84 I was stationed at hotel command and for sports parade, instead of my usual pier or snake park, I ventured over to the rock a nd got a snotklap in localism. Not from the locals but from the wave haha. Never went back. These days I have donkey bay on my " doorstep" but sadly I quit surfing a long time ago
Awesome series!
Shaun steals the show!
I miss my hometown bluff ! Had great times body boarding sunset ,and pipe.
awesome clip! what`s the song starting at 12:00?
Shazam doesn't match =(
@@alexandreouya9072 i didnt get a match either :/
Alright Redbull, you got me with this channel
Please do East London!
Who else had that edition of ZigZag?
Respect for people like Mark Mathews in the 80's and even the kneeboarder Lyton Alcock who would go out when no others would and get these freight train barrels and classic wipeouts.
loving this series....brilliant!
finally all this modern media is finding a home! epic
Absolutely awesome video. Did any of the bluff guys know my dad - Frikkie Gouws
Like if Red Bull is awesome!
Thanks Red Bull. This brought back great memories of the Bronzed Aussies v S. A crew back in the 70's Tomsons ,Knutsen ,Rudolph etc . Classic break!
I love these episodes thanks Red Bull
Eugene Heere - Colin Wiggle - Allan Wiggle - Percy Lane - Bobby (forgot surname) Terry Coulle - Kevin Coulle - we all used to surf the Bluff from Garvies to the Rock and a little further south to Treasure beach - wow what really good times - thanks for the video
🙌🏽 @Daniel Prinsloo
Unfortunately the “no localism” didn’t last long. In my generation it became heavily localised. Like you pretty much couldn’t surf there unless you had “connections “ from there
RICKY THE KING NO LAKKA BRU I ALSO GREW UP ON THE BLUFF FOR A BIT WHEN I WAS A LIGHTIE NO 6 BEACH ROAD SURFED THE ROCK AND ANSTIES BUT THEN HAD TO VAAI EXE ST FRANCIS JAY BAY VAABS , UNFORTCH BUT YA LINK ME UP IM A 85 BOY WOULD BE LAKKA TO SPIN SOME OLD STORIES
The Bluff and Maroubra in Sydney could be compared similarly. Although I think the Bra boys take the cake for being absolute nut cases….
Cool man, some guys certainly have Cave Rock wired, especially Rudy Palmboom and Ricky Basnett.
Rough n Tough n from the Bluff. From wealthy family with massive mansion on the hill 😅
Please boycott Red Bull until they hand over the murderer to face Thai justice. Thank you!
What's a freesurfer? Great episode!
@Louis Nel A freesurfer is a pro surfer who gets paid to travel and surf, not compete.
@@RedBullSurfing Amazing!
Aswome work
That board with the black rails Ricky B is riding looks like it goes sooo frikkin good
@Redbull Surfing. Where the sound track creds?
@Pienaar: The songs are mostly Sounds of Red Bull production. If there's a particular one you like from this ep, let us know and we'll get you the title and a link!
@@RedBullSurfing that would be awesome, please! Song at 12min 10 sec. Thanks!
@@RedBullSurfing the song that starts at the 12 Min mark, can you guys send the link for it? please!!! its a banger!
@@RedBullSurfing ? link? or title?
@@RedBullSurfing Still nothing here red bull?
LOVE this series Jason !
Awsome vid guys. Thanks to red bull to provide such quality videos with great and documented content. However, you won't make me buy a single red bull. cause it's bullshit. hahaha
Thanks jay 🇿🇦 kzn uk

Ha! ha! I remember that saying back in the 80's

Trev,if you seeing this in 2024,hope u good bru.Tim, am still in plett
epic! we allow to know the song at 12:00?
I grew up on the Bluff, surfing with Gavin Spowart and my brother and others. So cool to have a reminder of the best days. Thanks for sharing Ricky.
Cave Rock ate my beloved Larmont board in the late 70s. Learned my limitations painfully!
What is the name of the movie from the 70's that has Black Rock in it? Anyone knows? this is great!
Rough and tough come from the bluff lol.....
When I see things like this it just makes me want to say "I LOVE MY HOME" ☀️🌊
One lukka bunny chow there
Geez not sure wich is more impressive the surfing or that Mutton Bunny!
Home grown 💛
If I were these guys I would not bring this much attention to my uncrowned home break
Epic interview.
After this . . . . . .prepare for influx . . . your fault... : ) Did you spot the chameleon? :P
Capetonian here. Pitty that Durban is so crime ridden - I'd actually dig to live there if it wasn't' for the insane crime rate.
It's always awesome catching a glimpse of Shaun.
Beautiful
Learning the origins of the Bunny Chow just gave me the goosebumps, Ricky is a legend!

Epic Scrapes!
I nearly drowned there
Grew up on the Bluff, learned to surf Brighton beach in the 80s. Cave became my local spot in the late 80 and 90s. Best days of my life
A bunny what??
Loving this series! Would be cool to show some of the female surf legends in the mix too!
At Cave Rock back in the day... bwahahaha!
Make out. No mention of how shallow the reef is and how badly it bites? Or the 12ft sets breaking over the tidal pool? Am disappoint! Town clowns go home! Haha
Sheeeeesh, good work. Epic episode.
Cant wait to get back into the water!
Shaun and Ricky are class acts
Looks like Backdoor...
Bunny Chow = HEARTBURN FROM HELL!!!!!!!
no pain no gain :)
How is that not a worldwide food? McD's, KFC's and numerous other crap travel why not the Bunny? It looks delish!
fkin epic, well done boys
Wtf is a muttin bunny
